With recent changes to the system, we can have separate messages in close reasons for 1) close flaggers, voters, and reviewers 2) the author and 3) experienced users. I am currently working on use this to provide better guidance to everybody. I will ask for feedback on Meta once it’s done (because then it’s easier to get what it looks like), but here is a sneak peek (on which you are invited to provide feedback):
The first text (above Show post notices) is what flaggers, close voters, and reviewers get to see. The first box is what the owner of a closed question gets to see. The second box is what 3k users get to see when viewing a closed question. All other users see the boxes as well, but only the part above the horizontal line.
Our government is having covid-19 info for children. Where ministers officially ansver kids. Id love to see other countries leaders answer kids questions. Imagine trump answering covid questions of 12 year olds.
ist friday... yay we will have a all hands zoom meeting soon. Everybody will bring their own coffe. Sorta feels a bit flat but i could do with some talking
@Vincent Yes, kind of. I often share my office work here for feedback and help.
@Vincent So people who know me maybe some day can enter this chatroom and see it. There's very rare chance for it, but why wouldn't they come here? There's still chance.
@Vikas I think about this myself. It's very unlikely for clients to come here, but what if one of them ask a question I've answered here, i send them a link to the answer and they snoop a little around?
So I mostly camouflage stories from work a bit. Change unimportant facts a little bit so the story is still true, but harder to recognize for the ones involved.
But don't ask me. I'm not even on Facebook (80% of Danes are). People share all sorts of intimate matter on the same profile they use to get in contact with their colleagues. I'm much more private. Don't like to mix family, friends and work.
@Vikas Don't be offended, but I think you take it too personally. You often ask questions about a specific design problem you have with a project. The good thing about that is that your questions are often more about design than many other questions on this site. (Danielillo was good at answering your design questions.)
@Vikas, The downside is that it is hard to ask that kind of questions in a general way so they can be relevant to others. But I like that you keep doing it because this site has too many "why don't you just read the manual" questions.
@Vikas Any many others... He does have a temper and was cheeky sometimes, but I never had any problems with him. I liked chatting with him. And sure knows a lot about design so it's a loss for the quality of the site.
My newest web dev hack research... I frequently screenshot pages where I want to nicely highlight the text being displayed. I use the ::selection pseudo-class to change the background color to something more subtle than that flashy blue. This works in most cases...
The issue is, I want to be able to select + highlight multiple non contiguous portions of text.
I assume there's a way to do it using javascript; some userscript which when activated would allow you to select (highlight) multiple portions of text.
My thought is that it would basically be js on highlight apply a class to the selected text and that class would contain a background-color or whatever and like this I can do it to multiple selections.
This would be on any site I'm looking at. Example, I'm reading an article and I want to highlight some portions of text and screenshot them to send to someone.
I know I can easily use PS or any basic screenshot tool to very quickly highlight the text, but my ocd won't allow me to make it not look nice and I end up wasting so much time.... so I started with the CSS pseudo-class for highlighting but this only works for contiguous selections.
I don't think browser support multiple selections, so you have to somehow add a <span> around whatever you select which doesn't disappear when you make the next selection?
@Wolff that actually seems like a good idea, I would probably only have it deselect that portion though - to deselect all I guess click outside of a already highlighted area.
Is it possible (using js) to insert the selection into it's own element (in this case, a span) without breaking any other text on the page (assuming they don't have a css rule applying to all spans)
@WELZ I guess so. You could make sure not to let the span change anything else than the background color. But who knows what kind of crazy code runs in the background?
@WELZ Sure. I'm just a hobby javascripter, but i did play around with manipulating selections once. Can't really remember it now... Maybe it was just selections inside text inputs.
When someone says (or messages) something quotable, if I have time I quickly turn it into a nice quote image (like the ones that the news agencies post on their Instagram) and send it back. @Vikas I really wanted to do it with the parrot quote 😂
@Vikas It is strange. Nature's own tape recorder. I once was forced to sleep at a very bad hotel where they had a bald parrot in the foyer barking at the dog which was running around the hotel. Every time the dog made a round the parrot verbally attacked it.
@Vikas Oh, the story of my life. Sometimes when I've been tired of my job and just want to get home and have a good time with my gf and my hobbies I tend to stay up too late to "live a little longer".
@Wolff But it took me around 2.5 hours to finish everything + eating. Chapatti and then curry. But hopefully I'll be efficient soon with this induction.
@Wolff As soon as I get more space and resources. I have a small room with a tiny kitchen space in it. It's little difficult to manage. Lot of things here and there. I never thought I will have to cook regularly here. If you don't mind eating in that environment, feel free to join.
@Vikas What? Definitely worse back then! Evil soldiers trying to kill you. Millions of deaths.
@Vikas People here have compared it to when we was occupied by the germans 1940-45. But I think there is no comparison. Imagine seeing enemy tanks driving around in the streets. People getting send off to concentration camps. Bombers in the sky. At least people are united now against the virus.
@Vikas You still only have 0.6 deaths per million. We have 70.
But the curve has flattened here already. People are relaxing and starting to bend the rules. I'm a little bit worried they are celebrating way too soon.
@Wolff Think it in this way. There are many areas which are unaffected and will remain unaffected in India. Especially small towns, villages. So you should exclude those numbers of population and then calculate deaths per million.
Why is curious not here these days? Is she maintaining social distancing?
And we still have "stay 2 meters apart", "no groups larger than 10 people", "stay home as much as possible" strategy. But people decide for themselves.
@Wolff I thought people in Western countries like UK US etc. are more disciplined.
But guess what, here's it has become religious thing. People fighting over religion. Some groups deliberately cough and spit over others face. Hope this doesn't happen in your country.
@Vikas We were the first 4 weeks. Then the prime minister said that it's going so well that we can afford to open up a little bit if we keep practicing social distancing. People heard it as "party!".
@Vikas There has been some stupid young people coughing at old people to show how little they care. But it's not a widespread trend.
@Vikas, we've had 3 different strategies. First "We can isolate and eliminate the virus", then "We can't affect the number of infected, but we can spread it out over time" and now we have "We might be able to keep the virus down until we get a vaccine next year".
@Vikas Because that temperature is only in a small area? In the middle of the flame maybe. Probably quickly gets cooled down to much lower degrees.
@Vikas But temperature is not the same as the energy released (I don't know the correct terms). An ordinary candle can be 1400 ºC! But you can run your finger through it.
@Vikas That is bad! We have some problems with electricity. We need a larger renovation of the whole thing, but I don't think it's possible right now.
@Vikas Also I see wasps flying around now. Last year we had a problem with a wasp nest on our roof right above our balcony. I'm afraid a new nest is being build right now and the wasp guy can't come and nuke them.
@Vikas I can see that. But the homes here are very closed from nature with all sorts of membranes. We have some insect problems inside sometimes like moth or tiny bugs but anything as large as a lizard or a mouse would be seen as something you have to deal with right away.
@Vikas It's kinda cute but i wouldn't want it inside my room.
@Vikas you like to provoke a little? If there has been some controversy I don't think anyone wants to gossip about him behind his back. Wouldn't be polite. You can just invite him to a chat room and ask him.
@Vikas OK, good night. Say good night to the lizards from me. 😉
