And now, thanks tho Animal Crossing and their brilliant idea of putting these inside the game, a quick reminder that D&D Giant Crabs really exist.

Yeah, but those things can only live in the deep ocean.
These climb trees:

@BESW to be fair... Wikipedia claims that
> Adults can be found at depths between 50 and 600 m (160 and 1,970 ft)
but I see your point

That's deeper than recreational scuba divers are rated for.

3:15 PM
@BESW coconut crabs, they eat mammals!

did anyone see that image of a tarantula wasp dragging away a huntsman spider on reddit?

user15026
YES it was TERRIFYING

3:30 PM
Yeah, no offense to @doppelgreener or any other Aussies..but that country's fauna scares the bejeezus out of me.

3:48 PM
I've never seen one myself

user15026
I just don't like how big it all is.

user15026
Too much bug, that.

7:20 PM
@NautArch If it's the one I think it was, I was surprised this was a vespid at all. My first thought was a cricket.

fun fact, there are wasp-esque creatures in monster hunter called vespoids

@vicky_molokh my first thought was "AAAAAAAAAAHHHH"

@BESW XD
@NautArch oh god not interested, keep it away :/

10:34 PM
@BESW Nooooooooooooooooope. Those look like the bouncers of the crab world. I'm pretty sure one of them could beat me up.

lol
I'd pay for a picture of a crab beating up a moose
:P

@Rubiksmoose they are,... pretty tough
but they don't like, look for a fight
you generally have to screw with them first (or at least stick your face at them)
if you avoid them they aren't going to like, chase you down and pummel you XD

@V2Blast hahaha
@trogdor At least I'm pretty sure I could outrun one lol
Out of curiosity are these things used as food?

11:09 PM
@Rubiksmoose Yup, they subsist on a diet of only coconut if they can manage it, so the flesh is extremely sweet.

@BESW Oooo! I guess that also explains why they climb trees doesn't it?

They're not an everyday meal, they aren't farmed. People catch them in the jungle. You can pop 'em straight into the pot, or keep them for a week on a strict coconut diet.
(Yuuki's not wrong, coconut crabs are opportunistic and will eat any carrion they find, if coconuts aren't immediately available. Hence enforcing their pure coconut diet before eating them.)
@Rubiksmoose [grin] It doooes.

The coconut crab (Birgus latro) is a species of terrestrial hermit crab, also known as the robber crab or palm thief. It is the largest land-living arthropod in the world, and is probably at the upper size limit for terrestrial animals with exoskeletons at current conditions during the Holocene, with a weight up to 4.1 kg (9.0 lb). It can grow to up to 1 m (3 ft 3 in) in length from leg to leg. It is found on islands across the Indian Ocean, and parts of the Pacific Ocean as far east as the Gambier Islands and Pitcairn Islands, mirroring the distribution of the coconut palm; it has been extirpated...
Fascinating
> The pincers of the coconut crab are powerful enough to cause noticeable pain to a human; furthermore, the coconut crab often keeps its hold for extended periods of time. Thomas Hale Streets reports a trick used by Micronesians of the Line Islands to get a coconut crab to loosen its grip: "It may be interesting to know that in such a dilemma a gentle titillation of the under soft parts of the body with any light material will cause the crab to loosen its hold."
Oh no! Moose can't tickle titillate.
The only way we can titillate is with our amazing stories.

Yeah, I mean. They can open coconuts. Those claws aren't messing around.

Apparently they can only survive in sea water for "less than a day"
@BESW No kidding
