5:00 PM
@kviiri Probability doesn't "kick in", do I have to teach you college-level statistics?

@Yuuki I'm not sure what you mean

I am at work and can't be bothered to dig up my headphones
...not that there's anyone here at this late hour anymore.
@Himitsu_no_Yami Those assumptions are that one of the chests the player doesn't pick at first is destroyed, and that chest is always a mimic. Somewhat counter-intuitively, the probabilities are different if the destruction could have destroyed the real chest but still happened to destroy a mimic.

5:17 PM
Whew, had to catch a bus

What if the real mimic was the decision paralysis we had along the way?
2

@Himitsu_no_Yami If they don't switch chests, they are guaranteed to win a goat.

I know the math of the monty hall problem, but I can't make my brain believe it.

The beef I have with the Monty Hall problem is that why is switching considered making a new choice whereas not switching isn't?
The way Monty Hall has often been explained to me is that there's two rounds of decision-making. The first time around, you choose between three doors so you have a 1/3 chance of winning.
If you switch the second time around, you have a 1/2 chance of picking the right door.

That's not the explanation I've heard

5:28 PM
But aren't you also making a choice by not switching? So it's still 1/2?

Yes, the choice is reduced to 2 options. Option 1 is stay with your closed door, option 2 is switch to the other closed door.
(Technically there are 3 options, if you opt to switch to the now-revealed door, thereby guaranteeing a goat)

I've always had it explained:

You make a choice for one door (having a 1/3 chance).

Switching allows you to choose both other doors, having a 2/3 chance

Most simple explanations only work for the canonical version though

@Yuuki Just because there is two options doesn't mean they have equal probability. The door being opened introduces more information about the system

One of my favorite pastimes at the university was reverse nerd-tripping math freshmen who quizzed people about the Monty Hall with poor problem specification :-)

5:31 PM

What if goats became an endangered species and you could make more money by selling goat cheese than from having a car?

@Yuuki Then, as I said earlier, you are guaranteed to win a goat. Assuming the two goats are of equal value.

@kviiri will do! and thanks for the chocolate tips :P
@goodguy5 Wait, why just +2? A cleric is going to have the higher WIS then that, right?

the max from Mage armor is 18
The max from Unarmored Defense is 20

assuming score max is 20

@Yuuki I think the most robust explanation I know is that the door you get by switching is closed for one of two reasons: either it is the winning door so the host couldn't have opened it (2/3 of the time), or both doors were losing and this one was just not picked (1/3 of the time)

5:38 PM
@goodguy5 ah, gotcha! I forgot Mage was 13+ Dex.

The reason I think it's more robust than most explanations is that it kinda works for the case where the host opened a non-selected door completely at random and just happened upon a losing door, too. (With different outcomes following the same logic)
Sorry for slow typing, I'm on my phone

Is there a way for a level 20 monk to get tenser's transformation in D&D 3.5e or 5e? (I'm asking about D&D because I'm biased although I guess it could also be Neverwinter Nights)

@DavidCoffron Do they ahve to do it all themselves? THinking of Glyph of Warding with it.

@NautArch Ah. glyph makes sense
Nevermind. I just couldn't figure anything out xD
I think it is stronger in 3.5e than it is in 5e, since it changes your ability scores too
Although you don't get the extra damage in 3.5e so nevermind
Oh my:
> You lose your spellcasting ability, including your ability to use spell trigger or spell completion magic items, just as if the spells were no longer on your class list.
It was much worse in 3.5e
Not to mention you need a 300 gp potion to cast it in 3.5e
(although its duration scales an extra round every level in 3.5e)
You know what is interesting, tiefling had -2 Charisma in 3.5e, but they have +2 Charisma in 4e and 5e

6:01 PM
@DavidCoffron I think we just hae to go with they have it. An answer could address that they shouldn't, though.
but DMs gonna DM.

@NautArch Yeah, probably
There are other ways to get wish anyway
So the question is valid if the spell is acquired through wish

Clearly, they shouldn't have been able to cast wish. And even if they did, I think most DMs would have done something negative with the wish result.
Like yes, you have single spell slot to cast tenser's transformation. BUt once you've used it, there is no mechanic to refresh it.

If this is 3.5 then there's several billion different ways they couldve gotten that spell

@NautArch Meh, that seems needlessly punitive. I'd do something more interesting. You gain the spell slot and can cast tenser's transformation, but you are stealing the vigor from Valhalla warriors who come to track you down to end the theft. (or something like that)
That's neither here nor their though

They're a level 20 monk with an AC of 15. This seems like a table/player with some leeway on power

6:07 PM
@Someone_Evil I think they mean they are targeting an AC of 15
Their beating up on some lowly chainmail clad guards at level 20 though...

@DavidCoffron You might be right

@DavidCoffron Not really. It's providing what wish normally does - the ability to replicate a spell.

Shame we can't close comments as unclear

@Someone_Evil I don't understand the AC of 15. Gonna be interesting to see the Ability scores/feats.

@NautArch There's always the traditional method of getting a powerful supernatural being to cast it for you.

6:09 PM
@MarkWells Does a powerful supernatural being need to? :D
Doesn't seem like they're so powerful now.

@NautArch The DM who hands out a wish scroll isn't going to stop someone from using it

@Someone_Evil Unless they go by the spellcasting rules /shrug.
but i'd be even more inclined to do something tricky to someone that couldnt ordinarily cast it anyway.
and what would the spell save be against for a monk? Wis?

@NautArch What save?

@Someone_Evil Sorry, not save, ability check.
THey can't normally cast a 9th level spell scroll, so I assume they'd need to make an ability check of DC 19, no?

@NautArch To cast it? They may have made the same mistake I made and looked at the rules for scrolls, not spell scrolls

6:13 PM
@Someone_Evil Am I making the same mistake?
I mean, technically, if the spell isn't on their list (and they're not a Thief?), they couldn't cast it at all. But let's say we go with they can, then there should still be an ability check.

No, I don't htink you do, scrolls in general can be activated by anyone, however spell scrolls have a limitation to class and ability checks to cast higher level spells. That's very missable if you think you know how a spell scroll works and just look up the rules for scrolls

@Someone_Evil hol up. WHat's the difference between a scroll and a spell scroll?

@NautArch Scroll is an item type, spell scroll is a magic item (of type scrolls)

@Someone_Evil Can you have a spell on a 'scroll' and not have it be a spell scroll?

15
Q: Is there a difference between “spell scrolls” and “spells on a scroll” for copying purposes?

LudoWizards can copy spells to her spellbook as per the PHB and basic rules: "You could discover a spell recorded on a scroll in an evil wizard’s chest, for example, or in a dusty tome in an ancient library." The process describes a cost of time and gold: "For each level of the spell, the ...

6:19 PM
@Someone_Evil yeah, i found that. Still unclear how it pertains to this issue. Are we in agreement that you always need to make an ability check to cast a spell on a scroll?
If it's above your current possible spell level?

Question is starting to look like a math one rather than an optimization one. I.e. how much damage does this monk deal in 9 attacks.

Copying a spell onto a scroll for the means of a spellbook inherently means no one else but that wizard can cast it.

@NautArch Yes. I'm suggesting a reason their DM might not know that

@Someone_Evil oh!
I think there's quite a few things that are unclear as to DM decisions here.

So what rarity is this two attack actions for free ring do you think?

6:21 PM
I'm also very interested as to what they used their ASIs on. Because it seems like their Dex is 16 and WIS is 14. Which seems awfully low for level 20.

Hm? I still think AC 15 was for the target (since that was the question he was answering fmpov)

@DavidCoffron I'd put it at legendary, but I feel like this is beside the point

@DavidCoffron That makes somewhat more sense. But if you're fighting creatures with AC 15 at level 20....

@Someone_Evil true :)

6:24 PM
Maybe it's a social/intrigue campaign and this is their first combat. Or they're starting at 20th level.

but that repsresents an interesting issue regarding resistances/immunities.
and how important that may be

@NautArch Monk overcome resistance to non-magical attacks at 6th level
Resistance to the force damage from the spell is negligible

@Someone_Evil which applies to this particular monster. I'm not sure if there are others that do matter.

@NautArch What kind of resistances are you thinking of?

@Someone_Evil Resistance to all bludgeoning.

6:27 PM
@NautArch Only one monster has that

Those are some low stats for a level 20 char are they not? Or, very flat I guess

@DavidCoffron that ain't true.
Swarms have resistance to all bludgeoning.

Yeah, swarms; forgot

Unless it's a swarm of skeletons. Those are weak to bludgeoning.

and treants
and more

6:28 PM
@NautArch Treants were what I was thinking of. Then I checked and looks like a lot of plants have it

Yes, if it's weak to bludgeoning, then it's probably weak to treants too

Treant are the highest though at CR9
I feel like resistances here are ignorable

@Someone_Evil Could just like feats

@DavidCoffron No feats. low scores.
i'm so confused.

Idk. Seems a little contrived, but I don't want to jump to conclusions Maybe not, some of these things would be a bit absurd in a contrived scenario

6:31 PM
I got a creepy feeling they rolled strict scores after choosing class or something. Why else would a monk put their strength at 16 over boosting dex

It seems like they've got a suboptimal build but asking for optimal damage.
@Someone_Evil Was thinking the same.

@MikeQ They couldn't join chat. needs 25 rep

I thought if the question has its own chat room, then the asker can access it. Am I mistaken?

Also, their AC is 15. I don't think they meant that as a target AC
@DavidCoffron It's 20, btw
@MikeQ I think they would have to be specially invited by a diamond

@Someone_Evil Really? What's 25? Oh... nothing. Idk why I thought 25 was something important

6:34 PM
We can flag it for a clean-up into a chat.

6:51 PM
Ah, @Rubiksmoose There's a bit of a comment thread on this question. Push it to a chat?

This is getting more and more convoluted. I don't think we can answer it.
At least we can't answer it accurately if we assume they're playing the same rules.
Because it doesn't seem like they are.
@Rubiksmoose I also think it may be good to use your mod powers to put this back on hold.

@NautArch Hmm I feel like I would need to dig into the chat and see why that was the case first and I'm not going to be able to do that at the moment.

@Rubiksmoose okay, there's just clearly an uncertain set of parameters, and answers may have to be changed once clarified (if clarified)

@NautArch OK I read through it. Seems reasonable to hold for now. Feel free to ping if it can be reopened and I'm around.

@Rubiksmoose will do! So far OP hasn't come into the chat :(

7:20 PM
How would the Great Weapon Master feat effect a Stout Halfling?
Would the halfling be able to use a great weapon? Or would the effect be worthless
?

@RandomPerson They'd use a heavy weapon with disadvantage.
But otherwise, the feat would do what it says.

They can still benefit from the first bullet. Second bullet, though is disadvantaged by their size.
(sniped)

Would this count for a HeavyCrossbow

@RandomPerson GWM doesn't work with a heavy crossbow.

GWM specifies melee weapons, IIRC.
(sniped)

7:23 PM
But they would also fire at disadvantage with a heavy crossbow (has heavy property)

Would I be better off using a Light crossbow and taking the crossbow master feet?

Q: Is there a guide/reference for character hairstyle possible in D&D Forgotten Realms universe?

OddrigueI was playing a D&D session as a female cleric and, at some point, the party encountered some kind of wind monster. As I tried to cast spells requiring concentration, the DM argued that I couldnt because my hairs kept getting in my face and made me unable to concentrate on my spells. Later on, I...

@RandomPerson for what?

I have a bot that automatically sends the message "(sniped)" any time I write a message under one second after anyone with the 5e gold tag badge =)

A Stout Halfling Cleric
(forge domain)
@nitsua60 why?

7:27 PM
Because I assume they know better than me and are just a bit quicker on the draw =)
(Also, I'm kidding.)

@RandomPerson Do you plan on using a shield?

no
but will use heavy armor

@RandomPerson okay, just asking because using a crossbow means you can't have a shield (need a free hand to reload)
@RandomPerson Do you also plan on using the crossbow instead of cantrips for standard attacks?

no, I will use the cleric cantrips as well as two cantrips and a first lvl spell from warlock
(Magic Initiate)

@RandomPerson If you want to use cantrips, why do you want to use an ASI for crossbow expert?
Is it so you can do ranged attack cantrips at 5'?

7:32 PM
Yes

Ah, well that's a different thing then :)
If that's the case, I'd definitely consider it and use a shield :)

is eldritch blast any good?

But then you really don't need a crossbow at all.
@RandomPerson It is, but better if you have the invocation to add your charisma modifier (if you have a high charisma modifier)

best warlock lvl 1 spell?

@RandomPerson Kinda depends. Do you plan on using BLess as your go-to concentration?

7:38 PM
???
anyways

my DM told me to make another 20th level

Did you miss putting in your ASIs?

yeah

looks like all feats.

7:44 PM
and you get a legendary item?
are there too many feats?
this is really hard to parse

@RandomPerson If you have this in a more parseable form somewhere, we're ok with just linking to stuff in chat (do give context obvs)

@NautArch is "How you help a new player evaluate complex multiclassing options?" too broad?

@kent I actually don't think it is!
Understanding whether to multiclass or not is something the community has definitely considered.
and can provide good subjective answers to
And I"m sorry if I came off at all frustrating in your comments. My aim was purely to help get a Q&A that was useful to you and your player.
I do tend to like more detail so that we can dial in the best possible answer.
But understanding the various levers and decisions regarding multiclassing is a good question. And the related question on the downsides of multiclassing are applicable, but I don't think it'd be a duplicate (but in some ways, it could be.)

Q: Around and around we go. Hexadin vs. battle smith question closing

KRyanAnother question closed unnecessarily, another question we need to drag into meta to save it from the crusade. This time we have Can you compare and contrast a Battle Smith Artificer vs a Paladin with a single dip in Hexblade? “Too broad” is absurd; we have exactly two set-ups to consider, a 20...

@kent Nice! You should get some good feedback in there, but did you take a look at the question about downsides of multiclassing? That's going to cover the initial discussion with your players.

8:19 PM
@NautArch @Rubiksmoose I think its best to delete my answer until further clarification is reached, but I also want the user to be able to read my most recent comment. Is there a way to move that to the chat room.
What on Earth am I talking about, I can just retype it lol

@DavidCoffron hahaha :)

@DavidCoffron lol
Well if you meant the chatroom already in existence under the question, the answer is no, at least not at all easily.

@Rubiksmoose Fair enough. I just copy-pasted

Cool!

@NautArch Looks like 4 feats (Lucky is the halfling trait). Then 1 ASI in Dexterity

8:28 PM
@DavidCoffron Heavy armor master, crossbow expert, squat nimbleness, spell sniper, magic initiate, lucky, brave. That's 7...
Oh, i see about lucky. That's still 6.

@NautArch Lucky and Brave are halfling
That's still one too many unless he rolled stats though (CC: @RandomPerson )

I want to type up an answer to that multiclassing question, but work.....

@DavidCoffron ah

maybe later

@goodguy5 My guess is it's going to net a lot of answers.

8:29 PM
Everyone is so chatty today on mainsite ;)

@goodguy5 I honestly struggle with helping new players on that front too, so I look forward to an answer if you decide to write one

oh yea. that's why I want to get in on the ground floor

I"m glad we were able to help narrow down the question @kent had (even if others don't feel it was necessary)

@Rubiksmoose Lots of "No Longer Needed" flags?

@DavidCoffron That and lots of comments!
Nothing bad of course, just mildly interesting.

8:31 PM
It basically boils down to "don't".

Newbies Multiclassing is often due to some perceived optimization.

Just play the character you want and talk to me (the DM) about where you'd like this character to go.

@Rubiksmoose I'd say some aren't great :P

@goodguy5 lol
@NautArch Sure, but not really more than usual that I've seen.

@NautArch ah yes they already know the downsides and the rules. Its limiting options they are looking for.

@kent It really is more about character concept (as @goodguy5 mentioned.)
And depending on the primary class, if you're going to 20 then missing the capstone can be a bummer.
Bard...not so much.

@NautArch This is where I pull a line from your book and say why dont you submit an answer.

8:38 PM
@kent hehehe :) I'm currently putting myself back on hold from answering. Site agita has gotten back to me, and the comments under your question were the signal for me to step away again.
Happy to chat about in here, though!
And I have a feeling @goodguy5 is going to put up a pretty darn good answer that encompasses this stuff.

That reminds. Perhaps I should mention in the question that a lot of them are already set on multiclassing

@NautArch I've never appreciated the sorcerer capstone more than I do after reading the bard capstone

it isnt a matter between whether they do or dont. but which way they go

@kent That would definitely be good to mention.
do you know why they are set on MCing?

one sec
um what
i made the question bold?

8:41 PM
I may reconsider not wanting to answer. I'll likely put something up (maybe tomorrow.)
I've definitely thought a lot about this with my characters.

what on earth. a hyphen makes things bold?

@kent Honestly, that's a bit harder. It very much depends on what they are trying to do with their build. I don't think there's a generic answer here.

markdown is so bizare. anyway back the chat.
yes that becomes part of the answer then
What questions to ask about their build.
Im comfortable with things like arcane trickster vs arcane trickster/BS vs arcane trickster/artillerist

@Someone_Evil Not sure what you needed a parseable format for, but I recreated it on D&D Beyond (although I'm not sure what spell was gained from Spell Sniper since it wasn't listed so I just chose magic stone as a filler): Perry. Let me know if I missed anything @RandomPerson (I assumed rolled stats, because it is otherwise impossible)

I'm not comfortable when someone wants to compare sorcadin, hexadin, and hexasorcadin

8:46 PM
@DavidCoffron More as a general hint. The differences between chat and main aren't always super clear

@NautArch well i know the trickster is deadset on multiclassing because of the extra utility.

@kent Coming from someone who has a played a paladin, I'd be very wary to delay any of my paladin abilities. I know a lot of folks like the more/refreshable spells lots for smiting, but Paladin gets a lot of really fun stuff. And the capstones are marvelous.
Delaying the class abilities and removing the capstone would not be something I personally wanted to do.
But if their build vision require it, then that's build over optimization. Totally reasonable.

@DavidCoffron I did the big goof. No need to roll stats. +1 Dexterity from Squat Nimbleness (although no skill selection from what I can tell)

But then they want your help optimizing for something you dont understand

@kent I think the big question to ask them is simply "why?"
Why do you want to multiclass?

8:48 PM
@kent That's honestly a problem we get fairly regularly here on the site lol

What's in that class that provides what you are looking for in your character?
My Bard multiclassed into Warlock because of an in-game event and I wanted a damage cantrip that used my charisma modifier for when I had a solid concentration spell going.
It also enabled me to go with my vision of him as someone who never wore armor or used weapons.

Really the big thing for the trickster at least was guidance
this was the easy one to understand
AT/artillerist can go 11/9, 14/6 or 17/3

@kent Why ddi they want guidance? I mean, they're already a rogue and have some pretty good skill abilities. Do yo uallow guidance to be cast at any time, or only when the situation allows for it (remember it has a pretty short time of 1 minute)

and it comes down to flash of genius

7th level is a pretty big dip :) Not sure how long it's going to take to get 7 levels.

8:52 PM
because everyone else went half casting or above
everyone is a god damn caster in my group
sorry. ao damn

@kent I'm sorry, did someone say antimagic field?
Or silence?

and then when you friend is going hexasorcadin your damage as a rogue feels bad.

or minions?
@kent Why? Their sneak attack progresses and they get all the other rogue goodness.
Is your table primarily combat focused?

not really
its just that the only role the rogue had left was skill stuff

@kent And single burst damage!

8:55 PM
face, healer, burst dps, tank, were all taken

Wait...how many encounters do you have per day?

a lot

okay, so then how are the paladin multiclasses constantly have resources for smiting?
The rogue can do their thing all day.

because I don't do the smart thing of having many enemies
but im working on that
i gear more towards several deadly encounters a day
which they magic their way through

@kent Action economy definitely means you need more bodies at the players. Focusing fire is too simple otherwise.
Mix it up with increased enemies, environment factors, and when they're high enough level, legendary actions.

8:58 PM
oh you mean like when wall of forced assassins and then sacred flamed them to death?
we are on to ethereal enemies and teleports now that I learned my lesson.

@kent why didn't they go around the wall?

it was built to entrap them

AH, and no fly option.
but yeah, remember your enemies can be intelligent (if they have the intelligence). Play those that are smart smart!
At this point, the adventurers may be better known and the BBEG can send specific baddies after them at times that are build to bypass what they're good at.
But still give them boot stomp encounters, too :P
'cause those are fun

No. Truly the best was before a player rolled out of WoFE monk and every combat was ice choke point and warlock damage over time spells

I gotta run, but i'll try and get a written answer to you tomorrow. Got some actionable thoughts to help you and your players.

9:03 PM
cool well dont waste that action by being too hasty for a minute

9:15 PM
But being too haste-y means you can take multiple actions.

9:29 PM
Greetings fellow boats and other seafaring vessels

@MikeQ I don't know about seafaring. As far as vessels go, I'm a little teapot.

I'm sure someone could use a teapot as a seaworthy vessel. Not me, but somebody else.

Should something be done when questions like the above ^ already have five tags but the [stacking] tag would apply well? This happens a lot with multi-classing questions that have tags for "system" "class 1" "class 2" "multiclassing" and then either "subclass X" or "class-features"
