I just don't believe that you can't have a heuristic that can't automatically block valuable users I see on the front page now like Cum, Ur Nightmare and LUKE "MY CAPS LOCK KEY IS STUCK" STER that somehow seem to cause the majority of bumps on slow days without causing problems for real new users
I know there are a lot of restrictions on new users but the current ones suck, and don't seem to prevent people from actually doing stupid things
This is the reason we have /review and /tools. Any automatic system will block some potentially good content, manual moderation is the only way, and it's really not that bad at the moment
@QAdley Yes but that's the original solution, which is to ban these questions. The suggestion to turn them to all lower case was proposed as an alternative in an answer
I've rarely hit a captcha, usually on meta when I cut and paste something large. what annoys me more is the between-line delay on chat. makes it hard to post a onebox + a line of context.
That's the goal. Sometimes still happens, but it's rare, and if you know you're going to be taking time off in advance, you can usually make sure you spread that knowledge around before you leave

I tried WoW, I liked the night elf starting area, within 20 minutes of "trying" WoW I ended up owning a copy of the game, the first expansion, paid for the first month, <loud noises in the back of mind getting quieter and quieter as subconscious is disabled>
the interface sucked (where's my objective? why do I have a minimap but no objective dot on the fucking minimap!?!??). the attacking sucked (do I really have to treat basic attacking as a 'skill' to activate from the bottom bar?!??!). the objectives sucked (fetch me this, and that, and that, and that, and that). the MMO bit sucked (yeah, you see other people on your same menial tasks but there's 0 coop).
@FAE I used to play MUDs back in the day with a lot of people who pretended to be female IRL who weren't. It became safest to just assume everyone was male. :)

@Sterno That's what I mean. The "fear" of some other person potentially being "not a 'real' female" (whatever that is supposed to be defined as) is kind of homophobic, and that is what rubs me the wrong way.
@FAE I guess. But as someone who is not homosexual, I wouldn't want to build what seemed to be that sort of relationship with someone pretending to be a woman who later turned out not to be. And it's got very little to do with sex. You really just don't want to build a relationship with anyone who has been lying to you from the start.
I wasn't playing WOW to meet women, so assuming everyone was a man was also "safe" in that I'm just ignoring any flirtations or relationships of that sort.
Obviously it didn't end up working out that way though.
I can understand that not wanting to flirt with a man may make me a bit homophobic, but that one's kind of hard-wired into me, and hopefully that's as far as any homophobia I have goes.
@Sterno Oh, I definitely understand the lying thing. It's just that I run into a lot of that kind of homophobia and also transphobia and it's... sucky. For example, you listed the mic thing as a "classic excuse", whereas for many people I know, the mic thing is often "I'm female and don't want to be harassed" or "I'm MtF or FtM trans and am self-conscious about my voice and passing" and stuff like that.
@FAE I think I understand. to be clear, it was never a "Oh, I bet this is really a dude, let's all point and laugh at the pretender!" thing. It was just "I'm going to ignore any flirtations by this person" thing. Otherwise, I'd treat them just like anyone else. In my wife's case, we still chatted about comic books and sci-fi and stuff. I just sort of ignored her early flirtations. Which is something we joke about now

If so, can you access faction-exclusive cutscenes for content you've missed? (The only real compelling reason to change factions short of PvP, I suppose).
@IanPugsley oh man, you have much better luck than I do then. MW2 was the worst, since I don't think they allowed party chat in most of the lobbies. I still have scars. I got called all manner of racist things that didn't even apply to my race. I think I overheard a conversation once about a couple of guys who wanted to beat up some people because they were lesbians and wanted to go to prom.

@IanPugsley blackops was interesting too, since they allowed you to use these stencil/icon things to make your own "player logo." @EBongo and I had our own little meta-game of finding and reporting the most offensive ones every day. Sometimes that was more fun than playing the game. I'd say we averaged probably a dozen reports an hour.
