hmm, when did we lose the G+ and twitter icons underneath the voting numbers?
I only just now realized they're missing

hi DM

hi ya ... all quiet around here?

hmm... yup. donno why..

damn - you guys have been busy ... lots of flags !

6:26 PM
clean them all!!!

Hi!
Can anybody help me with my app?
I have problems related with spin buttons
I try to make a spin button, which I set up correctly, but doesn't works

Q: Problems related with spin buttons

espectalll123So, I have an important problem related with spin buttons in Python/GTK3. I'm trying to create a spin button in my project, Virtuam, and it seems to work... but with a bug which blocks the +/- toogles. Also, strangely, I can manually change the spin box value... :/ I've installed it in a ...

Hello... is anybody there?

@espectalll123 - hi ya ... not my speciality I'm afraid - not much help from me on this :(

@fossfreedom OK... thanks anyway

@izx - quick one - looks like you have been cleaning. If you have anything in your answers that the OP has tried, it would be useful just to drop that answer into the question - that way, someone else wont answer the same way. Thanks.

@JorgeCastro, @MarcoCeppi: Do either of you have a rough estimate of how long it takes to get an app reviewed that was submitted to myapps.developer.ubuntu.com ?

6:39 PM
nope

Just curious mostly.
:(

it hasn't been good though
but they're fixing it for the contest

I was about to ask that :)
So I guess we'll find out - I submitted it two hours ago.

how do i look at partitions from commandline?
I learnt a lesson: Do not venture to repair museum-worthy machines. And do not promise to make them usable. EVER

I have an app pending of review since one month ago :(
@GeorgeEdison So... I think that you may need to wait two weeks... guess why! :P

7:22 PM
how do i set system-wide proxy in lubuntu?

1
Q: How do I set a system wide proxy?

armando ArmandianoI'm trying to set a system wide proxy, and I'm specifically having difficulties with apt-get for installing applications on my Ubuntu. I'm in a university using a proxy server with username/password. I'm aware of setting a proxy with username and password in the following manner: http://username...

hmmm, that question eneds some love
aha!

@JorgeCastro thanks, but in lubuntu, theres no GUI tool. and also no way to set system-wide proxy. from what i figured from google-fu. Those questions dont help. :(

this is insane!!!

ask a new question!

7:27 PM
no system wide proxy??

looks like we need one on the site

jrg
ask, i'll bounty.

ok. This single reason is enough for me to go against lubuntu.
thanks. Asking
jorge asked one..
but in Ubuntu, its very straight forward.
you search for proxy in dash, even then it shows up.

looks like we only have one for stock ubuntu and xubuntu

lubuntu, no way found.

7:29 PM
why?

:(

we didn't have a question for ubuntu and xubuntu either until we made one

BBT. LAN off. :(

jrg
@Mahesh go make one when you get the chance.

OK... no people helping me... D:
Bye!

7:43 PM
Bounty offered: Where do I set system wide proxy settings? http://askubuntu.com/questions/15719/where-do-i-set-system-wide-proxy-settings?atw=1 #proxy

@JorgeCastro that was quick ... you've got your screenshot answer :)

Hello!
Got a gravatar!

7:58 PM
@fossfreedom heh yeah, all I need to do now is wait the 24 hours

Q: Is it permissible to ask a question in both Super User and Ask Ubuntu?

WindowsEscapistIs it bad Stack Exchange etiquette to ask a duplicate of an Ask Ubuntu question on Super User and vice versa? (Assuming of course that said question is relevant on both sites.)

2 hours later…
9:33 PM
@GeorgeEdison I have an idea for the app challenge!
hmmm
a few months away from quickly and I don't remember the commands

What is it?

9:49 PM
Mutiny!
:D

What's that?

It's an application for switching to Unity 2D, or optionally Gnome-Panel + Metacity, without logging out and in again.

That sounds like a really neat idea.

I haven't done anything useful yet, just simply did quickly ubuntu-application mutiny.
I might create some other applications too ^_^
(not for the app challenge though)

The name is awesome.

9:50 PM
Yeah :D
BTW, I will install NitroShare on my other laptop soon from now.
I didn't get to it last night unfortunately.

No problem.
I actually just released v0.1 this morning.

cool
Any new features? Or just fixes?
(P.S. I love quickly and I want to hug it, but it told me it would slap me if I tried).

The release was basically just so I could upload it to myapps.developer.ubuntu.com :)
(Which I did.)

oh cool ^_^
I think I am in love with application development again

It's always fun to start a new project - it's like a fresh canvas on which you paint pretty lines of code, strokes of logic, and a spattering of hacks here and there for artistic touch :P

10:00 PM
hehe
good way to put it :D

One nice thing about Qt - it is super easy to apply fancy gradients and patterns to widgets.
In other words, making your app look nice is easy in Qt.

I plan to return to learning Qt after this actually
I had started and then stopped because I got distracted (as usual)
Hmm

Trust me - you won't write programs in anything else after.

How do I run an application that I created with quickly?
I tried running from /bin and from the python files but they all give errors

I'm honestly not sure.
I've actually never used Quickly before :(

10:08 PM
(I feel like a noob because I haven't been up to this long enough :()
Gtk-Message: Failed to load module "rgba"

D:
All I did was edit some files in glade O_o
Oh wait nvm
was in the wrong directory :D
Hmmm
even in the correct directory it won't work :(
Okay...

yay for there being an object loader class already built in to three.js...change in approach means just generating the obj file right out of the gate, then loading it that way. always looking for a simpler approach. also, i've eliminated most of the controls.

It works... after recreating the project. I just need to figure out how to keep my python files in sync with changes in glade (this will be interesting :/)

@RolandTaylor I struggled with that too. It's one of the reasons I prefer manually generating UI components. It's why I have a wishlist bug for quickly sketch
here's the relevant question
2
Q: Working with quickly, are there any gtk.Builder code sketching tools that integrate?

aking1012Example: quickly create ubuntu-application testing quickly design #makes changes #insert some other command here that would be roughly equivalent to 'quickly sketch' quickly edit #to populate the sketched functions Willing to accept other gtk.Builder solutions that work if they're demonstrated...

Oh I see..
So essentially I'm stuck with frustration :(
asighspghipsg. Sihoshg, aoihf aoahsoiah oasoigo aousgougo souigdouia saosgoai d. Oaohoa oahoaiho dhaougfua, ausu gaougsougao saiouiodu aliugdiufg oagf osgo.

Mostly yes

10:20 PM
Right................................................................
D:
I think I will stick with creating content. I'm a good coder, but I cannot focus for so long :(

Hints that Qt is easier to use... :)

I can focus for near infinite amounts of time, but I have to find the problem I'm working on interesting...which sometimes isn't the case

I have problems not focusing. If I'm not careful I'll miss three meals in a row and almost get physically stuck in my chair.
The house could burn down around me and I wouldn't notice :)

Same when I hit the focus zone

lol
I can focus, but not when I'm coding.

10:23 PM
@RolandTaylor here's how i handle the issue, i just generate things as classes instead of using UI files:

I guess it's held over anxiety issues from some years ago when I first tried to learn how to program at all.
@aking1012 Interesting
I need to return to my old C++ ways.

I wonder if my coding style screams control freak to other people as much as it does to me when I read it...

C++ trumps everything... even if someone created a JavaScript-meets-Python-meets-PHP language.
(I'm getting carried away here...)

@GeorgeEdison No argument there, with the possible exception that C trumps C++ since it's really an extension of C (C++ stuff was possible with C if you used specific design patterns). It's basically a design pattern enforced as a language type

True, very true.
(But hey - I gotta have my classes, templates, and heap operators.)

10:28 PM
Qt it is, for the future, for most things. I think I will stay out of the app challenge for now, because honestly this quickly thing is a bit too much trouble.

I usually try to avoid actually criticizing a language or toolkit... but GTK is awful.

I think it's a split between something like Qt and something like HTML5 depending on the local processing power required.

I think people that prefer one or the other just think a little differently about how to do things

In C, it's a really ugly SET_OF_MACROS, really_really_long_function_names_that_are_hard_to_type(), etc...

True that.

It's a little bit better in Python, but still...

10:30 PM
I like GTK applications for their look and feel, but not when it comes to writing them :(

It's definitely something that takes getting used to

Speaking of HTML5, I considered writing HTML5 apps, but I still haven't gotten the grasp of all that separates 4 and 5 lol

jrg
@RolandTaylor buzzword bingo!

@jrg lol
What does that mean :D?

Yeah, it's a blurred line because some browsers have been offering parts of HTML5 for years now.

10:32 PM
@GeorgeEdison and I can never seem to find a concrete "This is it" document.
Everything is always "WIP, Might work here but not there" etc

If you did, it would be from the W3C.

jrg
There was a good one that popped up a few weeks ago.

...and it would be unreadable.

Exactly!
@jrg where? O_O

agreed... let me see if i can find it, but there was a set of videos from i think intel that points out specific differences, a website that has a ton of tutorials, and a "just what you need to know" chunk. digging for teh links

jrg
10:33 PM
html5rocks.com talks about a lot of stuff.

the referenced intel video set: youtube.com/…

Saved in Panorama :)!

jrg
i'm trying to find my notes from "HTML5 and the living standard" by @mollydotcom, but I can't find them. :(

:S
Sometimes I feel like such a technology noob lol
(yes, I do)

jrg
Curse you conferences that don't record your sessions.

10:36 PM
the "just what you need" link: developers.whatwg.org

jrg
I WILL PAY YOU MORE MONEY TO MAKE IT POSSIBLE.
Well, i think Roland is looking for a "What is HTML5, in English"

the intel video set is the best "here you go" about changes that i could find

jrg
Ah, here is an O'Reilly Radar that is pretty good. - radar.oreilly.com/2011/07/what-is-html5.html

generally a fan of oreilly

Time for a pinned message...
I am looking for a Mac user willing to compile a Qt application (NitroShare). I have a Windows and Linux build but no Mac build.
4

jrg
10:38 PM
@GeorgeEdison what are the requirements?

Basically all you need is Qt Creator and a bit of time.
...and a basic understanding of Mac programming.

jrg
if it doesn't require me with root access to get the dependencies installed and stuff, i can probably hack it.

(Enough to know how to package an app in whatever format Mac apps get packaged in.)

jrg
Well, I don't have that latter, but I understand *NIX stuff enough
oh, that's a piece of cake.

@jrg That I'm not quite sure about.
I honestly know nothing about programming on a Mac.
I can count on one hand the number of times I've even used a Mac.

10:40 PM
How can I install Cinnamon on Ubuntu 12.04 and eliminate the following errors: http://askubuntu.com/questions/155146/how-can-i-install-cinnamon-on-ubuntu-12-04-and-eliminate-the-following-errors?atw=1 #installation

jrg
qt.nokia.com/downloads - download from here?

I have a lot of a "clue" of what HTML5 is, and I've even seen some HTML5 code...

jrg
I won't be able to do it until Monday, but I think I can do it.

@jrg Yes, that's the right one.

My problem is, what really qualifies as a HTML5 application/site as such?

jrg
10:41 PM
@RolandTaylor Subjective.

(Bad wording I think)

(P.S. I really appreciate this.)

@jrg hmm
not good

jrg
This site (chat.SE) could theoretically be called HTML5.

jrg
10:42 PM
because it has those popup notifications in Chrome.

isn't this using AJAX or something similar?
oh
well that isn't standard so...

jrg
Yes, but that one feature makes it 'qualify'

I don't consider that to be HTML5

jrg
It was part of the standard, but they axed it (temporarily, from what I understand)

ohhhh

10:43 PM
It uses web sockets now on some browsers.

jrg
Also true.

and Google still pretends it's something "only we have, cause no one else is this advanced"

jrg
If your browser supports websockets, which is webkit only right now, right?

I thought Firefox supported web sockets?

jrg
Actually, @RolandTaylor - this is the best example of "what is HTML5" that I've seen. - html5test.com

jrg
Oh yes, it does.

Weird - Firefox had web sockets before Chrome :P

@GeorgeEdison yes it does
lol
@jrg oh yeah that site...

jrg
Now, right now only Chrome supports the bottom and Opera (development release) supports the top.
but it's still (at least for right now) part of the spec.

Opera 12 was released recently, wasn't it?

10:47 PM
Still unfair to Mozilla in some ways
@GeorgeEdison yep

jrg
@RolandTaylor unfair? Show me where web notifications are enabled in Firefox 14 out of the box.
I'm on a stock browser - the feature doesn't exist unless it is there without me tweaking settings.

What's unfair to me isn't the notifications thing, it's the media formats and such.
Why include formats that are encumbered by patents in a test for HTML5 support?

jrg
> The following tests go beyond the requirements of the HTML5 specification and are not counted towards the total score. If browser support for one or more audio codecs is detected, one bonus point is awarded for each codec.

Oh I didn't note that...
Sorry :S
Now I must finish my novel quickly...
and drown out this... madness D:

jrg
wat. finish your novel quickly before you get accused of plagiarism.

10:52 PM
yeah :S
Life hates my @$blingbling

11:07 PM
@jrg Chrome supports webcam access, it's just in experimental features. There's a webrtc demo that uses it
re-read and saw the barring of experimental :/

jrg
@aking1012 oh?

there should def be a button for "give me all the cool stuff"

jrg
i hadn't seen that.
oh, yeah. i guess it's nice to know it's on the way though. :)

jrg
Can't wait for G+ hangouts to move to that instead of flash. ;P

11:11 PM
it would be nice

jrg
but thats only in my dreams unfortunately.
HTML5 SIP client?!
Dude, that's almost worth going back to Chrome for.

i've been saying chrome is beating the pants off the competition on new features/html5-experimental stuffs, but i do meet with some resistance
Is it out of line to dislike questions which contain "I have an important problem" in the question body? Wouldn't all OPs think their problem is important?

jrg
It is true, however what happens is that they end up with a bunch of half-brained implementations.
and then like, none of them ever get fixed. :P
@aking1012 out of line? I don't hate them, i downright despise them.
Right until I edit that.

I suppose. I think with the chrome app-store these will get finished. It's motivation to move developers to a platform...*thinks about the goals of quickly*
My built-in snark level has me living for 4chan, but my built-in things should just work level has me built for AU. Oh my genetic situation

@jrg oops, flagged wrong
that "doesn't belong here" isn't hate speech or anything

A: Raid destroyed after upgrading ubuntu to 12.04 from disk

LMaaStop wasting your time with Ubuntu if they can't get the basic things right. This won't get fixed. rm -rf / is your answer

jrg
11:18 PM
@JorgeCastro whats the correct one?
@JorgeCastro you know you can do spam flags for things like that, right?

yeah I just misclicked
and wasn't thinking
and I'm out of downvotes. :-/

jrg
gotcha, well its taken care of.

the fact that someone even thought of posting that is...upsetting

jrg
Yeah.

for future reference what flag is "doesn't conform to ubuntu code of conduct from the faq". it would have been a logically justifiable flag if that one went sideways

jrg
11:22 PM
for answers?

yes

jrg
it is not welcome in our community.

or answers, either way

jrg
> This answer contains content that a reasonable person would consider offensive, abusive, or hate speech.

okay. got it. if i flag it, i want the right flag.

jrg
11:24 PM
abusive = potentially irreparable harm to your system.
not to mention that since the title is "it is not welcome in our community", and part of our community rules is the CoC...
(we should probably put that up on meta sometime.)

okay that second one is more the line of reasoning i was looking for

jrg
Just wondering.. would telling all users to run rm -rf / be grounds for permanent suspension? DO NOT ACTUALLY RUN THAT COMMAND!!!ObsessiveFOSS 24 hours ago
It's a case by case thing, but it's a serious offense and the user will be notified if not suspended. — Marco Ceppi 8 hours ago

A: What does each flag reason mean, and when should I use them?

Marco CeppiNot welcome in our community While some may derive this to mean posts about things that are Offtopic this flag is designed for posts that do not fit within one of two rules. I think that backs me up. ;P
@aking1012 it's a dupe of that answer. ;P

I agree on that case, I was looking for generally non-constructive/mean thing
got it

jrg
oh, you didn't need to delete it. i think it would have served as a nice signpost. :P

i can undelete..just a sec, then dupe it or whatever
oops. no i cant

jrg
11:29 PM
don't worry about it, it isn't that big of a deal.

Q: How can I disable automatic login on a LiveUSB?

NickI've just made myself a persistent LiveUSB, running Ubuntu 12.04, and I've immediately found a problem - It logs you in automatically as root, and I don't need this since I'm going to keep files and private stuff on it. My Question: How can I disable automatic login on a LiveUSB?

Something tells me that this is a dupe of something, but I'm not sure.

jrg
he's asking two questions there.
1. is the liveusb logged in as the root user? (answer is no)
2. how can i turn off autologin?

i think it's an OP that knows BT is going to get closed as OT and it calling BT5 12.04
I don't know of any other distro that auto-logins as root

izx
@JorgeCastro: I'll fIx that Dropbox Q to bifurcate tbe answers; looks like it messes up dPkg for some in addition to not installing dbox

@aking1012 I think it's more likely that he thinks he's root because you can use sudo without being prompted for a password, on a live CD.

jrg
11:32 PM
what Eliah said.

izx
How do you reply to messages using the mobile chat interface?

jrg
@izx you can't reply to a specific message, but you can do @username.

@EliahKagan oh. that is possible. maybe it needs more detail from the OP. the first answer asks "what do you mean logs in as root"

izx
@jrg: Thanks...any way to get the MSG ID in mobile view?

i got down in to the comments, and it seems you're right, it just wasn't fixed in the question

izx
11:35 PM
Message, not monosodium glutamate ;)

jrg
@izx you can look at the URL and pick the number ID out and then do :number my message.

izx
(hates iOS autocorrect often)

@izx glad you clarified. i was about to tell you to browse the internet for screenshots of lo-mein (my second favourite food category behind sushi)

jrg
(oh, on iOS it's a pain. It tries to think for me far to frequently)

izx
@aking1012: ROFL!

11:41 PM
new FF bug. open a ton of tabs. you can't scroll all the way to the left or right.

jrg
> Old Timey Web Ops guy. I think about cars and clouds, and how they could be faster, cheaper, and more resilient.
now thats a bio. :D

idk, mine is long-ish, but I shoveled in a bunch of data
brief aside, i put my stackexchange account on my resume

jrg
My resume is my stackexchange account.
well, not quite, but pretty close.

if you want to see mine, i can dump it on G+. it's erm...different.

jrg
well of course. you're one of those IT security people.
i mean, its like, your job to be different. ;P

11:49 PM
well i more meant formatting. i think being a person that understand what Mac is trying to do, you would get my resume

jrg
ah, gotcha.

izx
Oh I give up on the mobile chat if...bbl on a real browser

jrg
talk about 'clean'.

@GeorgeEdison i'm on a mac, I could give it a shot, installing qt sdk. don't know how far i'll get...

@jrg best interface i could find. i'm thinking about adding QR codes for some of the relevant bits in the white gap on the top right

jrg
11:54 PM
@aking1012 Hm. I normally don't like QR codes, but i think that could work for this.

it would fill the whitespace and be geometrically sound, but still provide some useful data and be outside the box
