Q: Accidentally deleted libGLEW

user3180I accidentally deleted libGLEW.so.2.0.0 from /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu The problem is, reinstalling libglew-dev does not bring this file back. apt get install libglew-dev just brings back an alias libGLEW.so -> libGLEW.so.2.0.0 But the target of the alias does not exist so its no good

@TheWanderer I was responding to this:

I got not deserved reputation answering a very simple questions, I think. Any one want a bonus on their question?

8:47 AM
@dessert Thanks for comment

@LeonidMew you’re welcome! I don’t really get the question, I just had these things to crab about OP’s code. ;)

nitpicking is mandatory when it is about coding @dessert :+

@Rinzwind I’m the nitpicker king, but still nobody wants to hire me :(
on second thought, maybe it’s not the best idea to point out flaws in the software to the devs when working on a trial basis :D

@dessert As I guess the question he able to run command in shell, but not working in script

@LeonidMew sound reasonable – oh btw, also highly relevant: askubuntu.com/q/425754/507051
er, no it isn’t, sorry

hmmm does /etc/init.d/ not always start a service as root?

Q: service GLASSFISH

Taleh Haciyevthis worked in ubuntu server 12.04 /etc/init.d/glassfish export AS_JAVA=/usr/lib/jvm/java-7-openjdk-adm64 GLASSFISHPATH=/home/opis/glassfish4/bin case "$1" in start) echo "starting glassfish $GLASSFISHPATH/asadmin start-domain domain1" sudo -u root $GLASSFISHPATH/asadmin start-domain domain1 ;...

That sudo in there smells fishy

@LeonidMew but you could use su instead of sudo to change the user, this would allow you to get rid of the <<EOF redirection

@dessert Nothing bad in redirection

@Rinzwind sigh, why can’t people just format code properly…
@LeonidMew no, just saying :)

A: How to corrupt the EXT4 filesystem

RinzwindIf you don't care about recovering dd is a tool to do a block transfer utility but is comminly know as "disk destroyer". dd if=/dev/urandom of=/dev/{blockdevice} count={blockstowrite} bs={sizeofblocks} seek={wheretostart} This bypasses the filesystem so will mess up the journaling. Q: How to copy and paste from Windows to ubuntu 18.04 on VMware

Zilore MumbaWhen I was running Ubuntu 16.04 as a guest of Windows 10 in VMware PlayreI was able to copy text or files from Windows to Ubuntu and vice versa. After upgrading Ubuntu 18.04, copying and pasting from one to another no longer works. Moreover any usb or external drive is not seen by Ubuntu. On the ...

@Rinzwind +1; Nevertheless you could mention that dd has as well usefull purposes as only corrupting a disk :)
As it is written now it leaves the impression that dd is really only useful for destroying disks.

A: Ubuntu replacement

Rinzwind how to uninstall an older os You don't. How can I replace one linux os with another? The same way you installed it the 1st time: you format the partition during installation of the new operating system Computer says, "failed to claim resource file1" and "platform device creation fa...

I beat the close votes >:-D

close votes are there so you don't answer
not so you can race against the 5

@TheWanderer Agreed. Downvote him.

@TheWanderer they are if the close votes are wrong >:) even with this amount of info I can create a good answer :+

Although, on second thought, that might be a valid answer. I thought the question was too broad, but if the error is indeed a Windows thing, maybe Rinz was right to answer.

12:02 PM
I don't like the answer

Damn you! Fine. I upvoted instead. Grrr

LOL

and if the error is a Windows thing, then shouldn't we not be answering it because it's OT?
I'm coming from SO standards here though

@TheWanderer The question isn't off topic, the OP is off topic!
5

wat

12:03 PM
The question is actually about Ubuntu but the OP seems to think they can install from Window.

@TheWanderer it is a microsoft licence thing that that added to the bios. we got drivers for tpm to get around it but disabling in bios is the better method

I don't see that
so it's still unclear
and shouldn't be answered imo

@TheWanderer Then you should indeed downvote.

"How can I replace one linux os with another?" assumes he is using linux :+
@terdon the 3 upvotes win anyways >:)

Turtle and elephants <3 @Videonauth

:) Love Terry Pratchet, may he rest in peace.

Netflix should make series and movies out of all his books.
and not with z-rated actors.

Oh please no the current existing movies while still funny never reached his particular style of humour

1:17 PM
done :)
Same with Wheel of Time. That would be a series more massive than Game of Thrones. So many different story lines each of the 15 books could be a full 52 episode series and not just a measly 13 a year.

1:37 PM
@Rinzwind Oh no, please no. Wheel of Time should never have been more than 3 books in the first place.
If I could afford it, I would hire someone to take that horrible mess and edit it into a trilogy.

2:08 PM
urgh, trying to set up a chroot-jailed scp docker container
hard to figure out which binaries are needed
when I try to scp to it from the outside, this happens:
$ scp -r . server@localhost:/
server@localhost's password:
unknown user 1000
lost connection
if I try to ssh into it, things are looking ok, but then this happens:
$ scp
unknown user 1000
ofc I added the scp and sh binaries, along with a couple more
but not sure what's causing that error
also happens if I copy the global /etc/passwd to the jailed /etc/passwd
I then tried to look into github.com/openssh/openssh-portable, but couldn't find what would start causing that error
any clues?
oh, I'm not sure how I didn't find this before: github.com/openssh/openssh-portable/blob/master/scp.c#L520

@terdon nope. only 1 bad part in the series: book 7. the others where marvelous

@Rinzwind Oh wow. I'm sorry, but I can't stand them. And I've read them all. Some more than once. The damn things are as addictive as they are badly written, full of plotholes and hopelessly sexist.

nothing wrong with the last part :+
and the plotholes are a good discussion on line

Pfft. It gets very tiring when across 12 books or however many there are, not a single female character is able to understand a single male character or vice versa.
I file those books under the same category as heroin: addictive as anything, but not good for you :P

@terdon the premiss is: male sorcerors need to die at birth :D :D not a lot of leeway

@Rinzwind meh, not really.

5:40 PM
good
I hate lines like that. I even consider it against the spirit of AU
@terdon what do you know about snaps? do they use the same url/port etc to update? or does each snap have its own?

@Rinzwind I just edited it out and deleted your comment. Simpler that way.

:D

@Rinzwind I know absolutely nothing about snaps. I know they're some sort of fancy packaging approach, somehow self contained, but that's about it.

all I know about snaps: sudo apt remove --purge snapd
:D

:D
I know they are here search.apps.ubuntu.com

Login loop disappeared!
@Videonauth Starred! (Because it's true!)

@Fabby check skype

Just came off duty...
Oprening...
@Rinzwind very clear answer so VTR on Q...

@Fabby you’d say a (unaccepted) clear answer to an unclear question makes it clear?

8:41 PM
@dessert No, because I would have answered the exact same thing too as to me, the question is very clear.

ok :)

us old farts are just very good at reading between the lines!

for me it was a "been there. seen it before" :)

@dessert See? Old fart ----^

been there, done that, got a t-shirt?

@Rinzwind Holy cow! I remember when you were less than 100K; you're double now.

@dessert thanks :)

@JacobVlijm YW.
@Videonauth Weekly rep gain.

@JacobVlijmI don't see you on the membership board anymore? Is your meeting not today after all?
Or did I fuck up the date? D:

@Fabby Ah

oh..

9:07 PM
yes well I not have much of that rep gain anymore

I see your message.
@JacobVlijm Well congrats!!! Sorry I wasn't there.. I must have messed the time conversion up somehow...

@JacobVlijm gratz! :)

@Fabby I used that..

@JacobVlijm now get us back on gnome 2 >:)

9:09 PM
I even checked to make sure I accounted for DTS.
idk how I got it wrong.

@Seth Stop drinking on the job!
;-)

@Fabby D:

@Seth well you mistyped the t and the s >:)

9:11 PM
I'm so confused though. It's 2100 UTC. They're running a meeting now. There aren't any scheduled for 2100. Just 2200.
2200 is in one hour, when I planned to show up..
Ah well. You didn't need me anyway @JacobVlijm. Congrats again! :)

oh had he been denied we'd be all over you :D

@Seth You in London?
(or Portugal?)

Holiday???

West coast US :P

9:14 PM
It's 17:00

@Seth, It wasn't your fault!

(luckily we're back to 6h difference!)
Opposite side of clock!

@Fabby where?
It's never 6 hours difference to west coast US. It's either 7 or 8.

EST is 17:15 now.

ohhh. Gotcha.

9:15 PM
Ah! WEST!

What are you doing on my side of the pond? :)
@JacobVlijm I still feel bad!

@Seth I always get confused because the East coast is west from me too!

@Fabby lol

@Fabby hahaha

In our (Budgie) team, I mentioned I miscalculated the time, my meeting was at midnight local time. Then I go pinged if I liked to start earlier, which we did
@Seth ^

9:16 PM
I only have one customer on the West coast...
And that's only because they insist.
And for the last time.

me too and it is a company opposite of google hq :+

@JacobVlijm ohh. That makes me feel a tad better. Glad it worked out for you in the end

Next time it's a US person...

hey now! The west coast is beautiful.

JP, EU, East coast are enough TZ for me.

9:17 PM
@Seth Thanks so much for the support though. It turned out to be a short one.
...meeting I mean

Too bad because I like the attitude of the West Coasters better than the East coasters...

Glad to hear it Jacob! The short ones are the best.

@Rinzwind Google map time...

Someone got turned down the meeting before mine, iirc. Was a little nerve racking haha

9:19 PM
Hehe, I thought today "Shouldn't I prepare in one way or the other"?

@Rinzwind ACII?

@Rinzwind 2.5 Km...
That's close, but not opposite...
