Are questions like this allowed here?

8:11 AM
@pomsky I strongly oppose banning questions on the mere assumption that OP tries to do something one may or may not find condemnable or that may or may not be illegal. What about penetration testing?

1 hour later…
9:20 AM
@dessert If the OP doesn't even have the basic common sense to present the question as testing their own security and instead openly states they're trying to circumvent the security of a pubic network they do not own, I see absolutely no reason to help them. They're clearly trying to do something that isn't allowed by the network's admins. I say that makes it off topic.
And it's off topic anyway since it's a general question about networks.

9:36 AM
@terdon true that

10:08 AM
@terdon eh I have been asked to test networks that I do not own. Perfecty legal what I did.

@Rinzwind Read the question :)
> My school has a network called "[school]_BYOD" that only allows devices such as printers and gaming systems use the network. Computers that attempt get a message that only devices without enterprise authentication are allowed to join. Is there anyway to bypass this?

I agree that’s not probable, but it could be the school’s IT guy asking

@terdon "t only of your own network where you're not bothering anyone or doing anything illegal. We won't help people get around restrictions of public network they do not own." ;-)

too broad nevertheless

not true ^

10:11 AM
no?

@dessert naa. I would have given it a "No you can't" D:

@dessert Not really. The question is clearly asked from the perspective of someone who wants to break it.

Q: WSL Ubuntu 18.04 shows wrong Cpu_allowed mask

Ole TangeUbuntu 18.04 running under WSL detects my CPU wrong: $ cat /proc/self/status | grep Cpus_allowed Cpus_allowed: 00000001 The CPU is an i7-4510U (2 cores/4 threads) so I expected: Cpus_allowed: f or similar (ffffffff, 0000000f). The peculiar thing is that when I run 4 processes, each pro...

19.04 budgie cant add new icons to panel :P

@Rinzwind Huh? What happens?
On Budgie 10.5, it is calles "Favorite" in the right-click menu

naaah. you made it too confusing with only a star :D

@Rinzwind design by Solus :)

shortcuts in the panel WINS! :)
i REALLY hate how icons are handled on the desktop.
hmm how do I reverse touchpad scroll? it goes up when I want it to go down. I remember it took me hours to find how to do that :X

@Rinzwind Look at the gorgeous desktop clock :)
The icons on desktop are a nemo workaround, (not using nautilus anymore for indexing without the option to switch off) since nautilus stopped with desktop icons. There is another option on the way for showing icons on the desktop.

9:47 PM
I want a LIST >:-DDD go make me that option
icon on the left and then the text as wide as possible :X

A list?

yes a list!
small icon on the left and then the name right side of the icon >:)

of what?

desktop icons :+

Never saw that,
What desktop has that?

9:49 PM
I know! I WANT that :P icons are useless info. I want to see the text
look at the tekst on my desktop: most are from 1 series and the most important part is not there: episode number
I always hated how desktop icons work; not just linux but windows too

Aha, just like in a filebrowser window?

yeah.
like this
and then icon+ name (and not the other columns) :D

I do believe btw you can set the ellipsize. Need to look it up...

hmm. not that I remember :X

...so the full name shows

9:54 PM
aha

Let me see...

cant find it except for xfce

Found it, will post from my 19.04 laptop, wait...

:D

/org/nemo/desktop/text-ellipsis-limit
It sets the max n-lines to show. I set it to 20, full name shows

10:02 PM
that's better :D

Awesome! could be the default.

@jacob is budgie as well having a whole lot of DE stuff put into snaps like the vanilla ubuntu?

Nearly nothing, only our welcome, because we want to be able to update stuff from e.g. backports etc.
@Rinzwind you did an upgrade, right? I see the old 18.xx wallpaper

10:05 PM
nope
full reinstall

Huh??

that last screen has another background than the 1st one above
I did a full install with format :P

this is putting me off really :/

I have those + discord and vlc ;-)

(this was a screenshot from about 6 weeks ago)

10:11 PM
current :+

seems my days with ubuntu are counted if im not able to have a complete snapd free environment
well lets see if i get the same snaps installed with my own installation method

...Only Budgie-Welcome here
@Rinzwind wonder how you get the old wallpaper on 19.04

I picked it from the list. Well the 2nd one. 1st one was from install

Ah, ok, you did get the new ones, right?

what are the new ones? >:=D
oh damn
the CLOCK is messed up now

10:18 PM
I love having 6 cores :)

The desktop clock?
What happens?

went small too
->
hmm it was working after I set /org/nemo/desktop/text-ellipsis-limit though.

Ah, you messed with the font size :)
Budgie Settings -> ShowTime
...Font settings
in dconf, you must have messed with the wrong key

no I did not. I changed it but never saved it >:)
rebooted and now it is fine

Weirdweird

10:22 PM
oh the "don't show this notifcation" on wireless does not accept input.

Noob Q, but how does one add an image here?
2

on au?
click "upload" ->>>>

Oh, crap, of course
^on of the three new ones

scroll up ;=) my 1st screenshot was diff. than the last one :D
org. was with dots a bit more to the left than yours.

Ah, ok, yeah, yours is the default

10:27 PM
well I think my system is configured to my liking now.
I hope. scrolling works. desktop icons cool. planck is gone. icons in panel :)

Coolcool. I can see if I can find the scrolling. Not really my area.

found it
wording on the tool tip always gets me

Greatgreat

jrh
Hi there, I typed up a complete guide for how to take a video in mp4 format and write it to a DVD in Linux, there's a couple tutorials out there on forums but I found them to be out of date / non-functional these days but I was able to fill in all the blanks. I was thinking of making a selfie QA on that, is that alright? Is there anything I should be aware of before I post something like that?

this is stupid -> @JacobVlijm
The 2nd line I would assume that it disables moving the content. But it does not. It reverses the scrolling.

10:30 PM
@jrh Post the Question and the answer simultaneously.

Where is that?

settings :+

Budgie Settings or Gnbome?

@jrh yes. make a q and make an a.

jrh
there's some kinda dupes like this but it might be worth mentioning my method is 100% command line

10:31 PM
gnome settings :)
@jrh you already got my upvote :+

Yeah, Gnome... Not much we can do.

@jrh Then put that in the question title.

ah 1 more to test. if wifi keeps active when I close lid :D
test succes :-)

@Rinzwind +1

jrh
10:35 PM
also this is commonly recommended but it just didn't work; it worked one time but due to a bug it fails to delete some file and it never works again; I should probably report that...

@JacobVlijm How customizable is budgie? Can you do stuff like multiple workspaces, lamp minimize, ...

jrh
if it was reliable it would be awesome though, my method doesn't have any menus...

(I'm still on 16.04 because I like Unity)
@jrh Just do it... (=stop talking about it and go write it)

Workspaces? Sure! Lamp minimize? Not familiar with lamp...

;-)

jrh
10:38 PM
okay; I'll probably do it over the next few days, have to clean up my notes

@JacobVlijm shaky animated minimize

@Fabby wsp: sure. what is lamp minimize? >:)

Ah, ok, Hah, never saw that on Budgie, probably not a priority :)

@Fabby go away >:) tsk.

@Rinzwind I like stuff like that!!!

10:39 PM
Budgie now has "quick notes" in the panel

You can shake the monitor however while minimizing
3

@JacobVlijm shaking a notebook is bad

I have ssd

noob! ssd+hdd :+)

@Rinzwind Steampunk customized desktop, remember?

10:41 PM
@Fabby What are you trying to say :) multiple backgrounds? Of course we have a wallpaper-per-workspace

Full Metal Alchemist <3 @Fabby

@Rinzwind :D :D :D
@JacobVlijm OK, so I should have a look at budgie...

YOU DIDN'T?

Can I easily upgrade from 16.04 Unity to 18.04 Budgie or just reinstall?
@JacobVlijm No, I never did: I like plain vanilla and then customize the shit out of it.

must see @Fabby ->
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (Japanese: 鋼の錬金術師 FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST, Hepburn: Hagane no Renkinjutsushi: Furumetaru Arukemisuto) is an anime series adapted from the Fullmetal Alchemist manga by Hiromu Arakawa. Produced by Bones, the series is directed by Yasuhiro Irie and written by Hiroshi Ōnogi. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is the second anime television series based on Fullmetal Alchemist, the first being 2003's Fullmetal Alchemist. Unlike the previous adaptation, Brotherhood is an almost 1:1 adaptation directly following the original events of the manga. It was first announced in the...

10:43 PM
I never did anything else in my life than reinstall, so I can't say.

@Fabby you don't have an ssd? >:)
reinstall takes me less than 12 minutes so I do no longer do upgrades

^^^ this

@Rinzwind E01 download started.

@Fabby one of the best series :)

Redecorating the house tomorrow, time to sleep... Night all!

10:45 PM
@JacobVlijm I was thinking about Manjaro and KDE Plasma because Manjaro is Arch-based so no more re-install ever!

oh that is the remake. the original anime had an ending made before the manga. the remake did it corectly

@JacobVlijm Good night!

@JacobVlijm wrong priorities :+

@Fabby no, but always busy finding out what is broken @Rinzwind I know, I know :)

@JacobVlijm Please vote on tag synonyms when you get some time. Thanks : askubuntu.com/tags/multiple-monitors/synonyms

10:47 PM
@SergiyKolodyazhnyy Upvoted.
@SergiyKolodyazhnyy P.S. Never heard back from the domestic Unix Manager.
I went through my mails and he never replied to me ever unless his boss replied to me.

@SergiyKolodyazhnyy done!

brown-noser, so no big loss for you...

time for a break. bbl :)

brb in 8 hours

@Videonauth Tell me it it works! I want some stuff changed to native apps too!
(actually, I want to get rid of all snaps! )

10:50 PM
@Fabby will do im half way through installing it my way

oh-ooooh...
:D :D :D

on 18.04 it works, i only disabled all snap services on my main machine
now trying if it works on 19.04 too

Copy binaries???

nope debootstrapping
and the install on top what it is needed for the DEs
in a chroot environment

Urgh! That's worse than snaps!
If I could just limit them to 1 that would already be better...
(I've got them down to 2)

10:53 PM
nope works like a breeze really and does not take longer than using the installer
on my 18.04 i have zero snaps :)
null nada none

Nice!
Smoke! AFK BRB

disabled all snapd services even

@Videonauth Everything though PPA then?

@Fabby yep

I haven't found a decent VLC PPA
nor Slack.
I should drop by again soon...

11:06 PM
I just have to ask: What is it about snaps you two dislike so much?

(Tomorrow I have to go to Paris again though... and Sunday to Uncle in NL...

Ho Lee Fuk

Yup.
I should probably do away with canonical livepatch, simple-scan

11:12 PM
discord has a deb file for download, works wonders, same with skype, simple scan should be in the repos as well pypy3 too, telegram and vlc too
would only need slack having a deb file installer or repo

and that’s all? I agree those are annoyances, but is it anything more than that?

gtk-common-themes is in the repo for sure
whats putting me off is gnome in that

@Videonauth Yeah... I'd rather have a PPA than a deb.
@Videonauth I don't even know where that came from...

ok let me finish my experiment here, have to write the fstab file

:-) I need to go to sleep anyway...
Long drive tomorrow...

11:17 PM
where you going?

@Videonauth Paris Data Center tomorrow morning, uncle tomorrow evening if I make it.

oof
well sleep well i keep you informed tho

11:31 PM
I replaced the one snap I had – pdftk on 18.04 – with the help of David Foerster (again) and removed snap and snapd, also stopping and disabling the services. I guess for just a single program you can get easily from elsewhere it is a bit much. :)
