@GodEmperorDune MDSGA

@GodEmperorDune Do you know what the reason is for people wanting to make it permanent versus getting rid of it?

@TimStone i guess whether to stay on summer time or winter time
with trump it's probably to not have to deal with losing an hour next fall

Right, there just seems to be a preference for summer time and I'm not sure if there's some special consideration

springing forward seems to be more of a pain in the ass for humans than falling back
but it is easier to set the clocks up an hour

I agree, which is why I feel like we should wait for fall, get the hour back, then call it quits :P

12:12 AM
It would be cool if Trump could do one thing good before he becomes a bad memory.

normal congressing would be to have the law take effect after a certain time to give everyone a chance to adjust things

can you imagine all the scheduling code that would have to be updated to deal with this

We could finally agree that putting computers in appliances serves no useful purpose though
I will not be entertaining arguments about power outages at this time

ehh resetting microwave and oven clocks aren't so bad these days

12:16 AM
I think I still haven't moved mine forward yet

i do it morning of or i leave it for 6 months

Fox News host Tucker Carlson uses racist, homophobic language in second wave of damaging audio https://wapo.st/2ESvnqN
Just so there's no confusion, there was actually so many comments we had to do this across multiple days and also every night when Tucker's show is on

@GodEmperorDune on some devices I just leave it until a power outage or until the time goes back to normal
last year, the clock in the bedroom stayed an hour behind until the daylight savings ended (started? Idk) and I just did mental math without even thinking about it
it was confusing for a few days though when the time it showed was actually correct...

2:25 AM
Trump says he intentionally called Apple's Tim Cook "Tim Apple" as a way "to save time & words" http://hill.cm/srbJKX2
> Trump wrote on Twitter that he just tried “to save time & words” by referring to the tech industry titan by the wrong name last week at a White House meeting with business leaders.
> Axios reported Sunday that Trump told a group of Republican donors over the weekend he actually said “Tim Cook, Apple” very quickly but that the “Cook” was said quietly.
funny how "saving time and word" is said on twitter, the platform which has a strict character count on posts

2:50 AM
I CAN FINALLY SHARE THE BIG NEWS!!!! I’M RELEASING MY OWN QUIZ BOOK!!! I AM SO EXCITED FOR THIS AND THANKFUL FOR THE OPPORTUNITY!!

Trump suggests free health care is like promising to put “Rolls-Royce in everyone’s pocket” http://hill.cm/Ah3q6uD
> He cited a single-payer health care system as an example of a "seductive" idea that would be unaffordable for the country.

"But the truth is when you’re up on the debate stage, and they say we’re giving you free education, we’re giving you free health care, we’re giving you everything you want and a Rolls-Royce in everyone’s pocket, it’s not an easy situation," Trump said. "But what happens is ten years later the country is gone. Okay, whether it’s this country or any other country."
not if you finance it properly. a single-payer health care system is funded by taxes so you get that right and cure the rich's allergy to it you can make it work

Came across this amazing article; turns out its from last year, but absolutely worth the read:
Blacks were enslaved well into the 1960s. http://bit.ly/2GN6lsv
> Six months after that meeting, I was giving a lecture on genealogy and reparations in Amite, Louisiana, when I met Mae Louise Walls Miller. Mae walked in after the lecture was over, demanding to speak with me. She walked up, looked me in the eye, and stated, “I didn’t get my freedom until 1963.”

JUST IN: British Civil Aviation Authority bans Boeing 737 MAX commercial flights from UK airspace as a precautionary measure
lol, and of course
Airplanes are becoming far too complex to fly. Pilots are no longer needed, but rather computer scientists from MIT. I see it all the time in many products. Always seeking to go one unnecessary step further, when often old and simpler is far better. Split second decisions are....
BREAKING / NBC News: The FBI and U.S. Attorney in Boston has charged 12 people in a massive college entrance exam cheating scandal that facilitated students being admitted high-profile D-1 schools, court documents show. More details to come.
@TimStone Romney and Blumenthal also now calling for the grounding of the 737 MAX 8 fleet
....needed, and the complexity creates danger. All of this for great cost yet very little gain. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want Albert Einstein to be my pilot. I want great flying professionals that are allowed to easily and quickly take control of a plane!
Mr President,,,I agree
I too do not want the corpse of Albert Einstein, noted non-pilot, to be flying my plane

2:17 PM
@TimStone lol, yep. "Darn kids these days, with their new fangled gadgets. Get off my lawn!"

Apropos of nothing,
Here's video of a Trump Shuttle airplane crash-landing with its front end scraping the ground in 1989. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nVHnWe1oxaQ
This keeps coming up in many conversations I’ve had in the last 48 hours: If it was Southwest and American and not Lion Air and Ethiopian five months apart, the 737 Max fleet would’ve been grounded by Sunday evening.
Hrmmm that's probably true but I don't know if we can take for granted that the situations are 100% comparable? Like it's not to say Lion Air or Ethiopian are somehow less reputable airlines but I am curious given Boeing's hedging on highlighting the MCAS in the first place if the playing field is level for everyone involved in the process?
Like presumably Boeing publishes materials in all native languages of their clientele? But I'd still be interested in whether any shortcuts have been taken in making sure everyone has an appropriate understanding
(i.e. maybe the problem is corporate malfeasance rather than a specific problem with the plane's design itself)

@TimStone Or even Air Canada and WestJet.
@TimStone All pilots of international flights are required to speak (and presumably read) English.

I actually think domestic-only airport traffic control still communicates solely in English.
Trying to find an ATC stream of a non-English domestic airport to verify.

2:35 PM
@Yuuki For the most part, but a lot of ATC is centralized, which means they're handling international flights anyway, and therefore speaking predominantly English.

Side note, listening to ATC streams is incredibly calming.

You'd have to find a tower ATC that doesn't handle any international traffic, and good luck with that.

I thought ATC still uses visual confirmation in some cases, so you'd still need a tower in a domestic airport.
Oh hey, Italy's banned unvaccinated children from schools.

@Yuuki Cameras are a wonderful thing. I think Gatwick is an example, but there's at least a few airports where the tower is run out of an office building downtown.

IAH still uses a tower although it's possible that they also direct traffic for Hobby.

2:47 PM
@MBraedley Right, though there is a maintenance aspect to this too. But given that Boeing wormed its way out of retraining for this plane it'd be good to confirm that they made the best attempt possible to get this information understood by flight crews after the first incident
BREAKING / NBC NEWS: Hollywood actresses Felicity Huffman and Lori Loughlin are two of over 40 people charged in the college exam scheme, according to court documents. They are charged with conspiracy to commit mail fraud and honest services mail fraud. https://twitter.com/Tom_Winter/status/1105473054686236672
Weird side gig tbh

@TimStone If their kids aren't involved in this, that'd be pretty unexpected.

Ah, they are, that makes sense
Huffman did it for her eldest daughter then was going to do it again for her younger daughter but apparently was like "Meh" the second time around lol
When your plan to get your kid in as a fake USC lacrosse recruit has but one fatal flaw.
lol

@TimStone Without saying anything about the airlines as businesses, it's my understanding from James Fallows that an African or East Asian airline is going to have less pilot experience on average than places that have been flying for longer.

3:04 PM
That's possible, though I also don't have a sufficient perspective for how much experience helps in this particular scenario given that the issue seems to largely center around Boeing changing the expectations
It'll be interesting to see in this case if the pilots had/took the opportunity to manually adjust the trim using the wheel thingy, which didn't happen in the Lion Air incident

Good point.

For background for those not up on this, the 737 MAX 8 added bigger and repositioned engines for better fuel efficiency & thus range, but this causes the plane to nose up, so they added a system to autocorrect for this that was originally based on input from a single sensor that can easily not sense correctly. It does this by adjusting the trim of the tail elevators.
Previously pulling back on the stick would kick the plane out of auto-trim mode, but since the plane needs to be auto-trimmed for stability now it no longer does this. You have to use the cranky handle to force it instead
(a simulator cockpit, but the pacman wheel has I think a handle that you can pull out and crank)
If I've remembered correctly, I am not a pilot and have not done simulation in a while 🤔

Whoa, very impressive detail @TimStone, thank you

But yeah, if the plane is telling you to nose down because the AoA sensor is borked and the plane is trying to automatically nose down and you also nose down and then realise you should not in fact be nosing down bad things happen :/

@TimStone you have to switch of the auto-stabilizer first as far as I understand, and then you can turn the crank
the weird thing is that it only uses one of the AoA sensors at a time

3:17 PM
Yeah, I think after the first incident they were supposed to be finding a way to correct that since it's just...very bad?
Presumably the thought process is that "Oh you can always just disable the MCAS" but then they didn't tell pilots about the MCAS
So counting on people being able to go through the entire emergency checklist in an emergency is not a gamble I'd want to take with people's lives but 🤷‍♂️

the other thing as far as I understand, which could certainly be wrong, is that the stabilizers have more control authority than the pilot flying manually. So if they don't fix this, they can't overpower it manually either

Ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
I regret to inform you that America's Uncle is running
I'm sorry
I tried to set up a bribery ring with ice cream to keep him in the state but I did not succeed

@TimStone Wait like literally for exercise?

ALAS no, Biden is running for President

@TimStone Oh darn.

3:24 PM
French DGAC closes French airspace for 737 Max as well
As an aside somebody should probably check who in the administration dumped a lot of Boeing stock right before Trump tweeted
It could have not been anyone, but, you know

@TimStone Germany as well just now

This case is fascinating--the founder of a Newport Beach, CA-based college counseling business Edge College and Career Network, LLC, also known as "The Key," flipped on his rich and famous clients. So did a private school college admissions counselor out of Florida.
lmao, calling your pay-for-admission scheme front The Key is some next level crimesing, excellent work my dude

@puzzlepiece87 Lion air, sure, but Ethiopian Airlines dates back to right after WW2

@TimStone He hasn't formally announced, but here's the Hill article sourced to a member of Congress who was told that he will:
EXCLUSIVE: Dem lawmaker says Biden to run for White House http://hill.cm/2wzvlNZ

Like, Ethiopian Airlines is only about 20 years younger than AA, Hawaiian, Delta and United, only 10 years younger than Alaska Airlines, and older than pretty much any other airline in the USA

3:38 PM
.@SenJoniErnst & @SenMikeLee are unveiling a new proposal for paid family leave. The "Cradle Act" would allow new parents to use Social Security savings to pay for time off after birth/adoption. Users would then delay their retirement to pay the money back. 📺 Only @CBS Wed. https://t.co/2r5hsSF6a8
this is in fact not a paid family leave proposal

Yeah but dying early to own the feds is the American Dream
Actually bonus points though if they pass on the debt in the estate given the whining over the estate tax

3:56 PM
Hmmm... interesting if true, but if so, why would this be the first we're hearing about it?
Mueller may drop a second report that can’t be buried, writes @therealNWC https://trib.al/PvTcFLS

@Unionhawk It's technically paid family leave in the sense that you pay for your family leave.

4:30 PM
@Yuuki @Unionhawk How much would you pay to insert Yuuki into a dumpster? :P

4:43 PM
@puzzlepiece87 Would that be considered paid leave?

@Unionhawk UK? Not clear without further context.

@MBraedley Yeah, I think it translates to "there are currently no plans for re-voting on Brexit"

@MBraedley Yeah, 10 Downing Street is the White House equivalent

4:51 PM
@TimStone Well if he had said Downing Street, that would have been enough context.

It's colloquially known as "Number 10" in the UK, though that's obviously context you would have had to have previously

As an aside, nobody here says messages from the government originate at 24 Sussex Dr., they say the PMO (Prime Minister's Office).

Different cultures are different and therefore weird
Especially any culture derived from @TimStone
Which reminds me

5:09 PM
@MBraedley While "The White House" is far more common, some people will occasionally use "1600 Pennsylvania".

tbf notices come from "The Office of the President of the United States" but we just say the White House

Yeah, I'm talking common vernacular.

Just Bizarro Bad Place

Actually, that's probably a better way of looking at it.

Oh, Clark Brewster represented one of those Bixby kids that assaulted another by forcing a pool stick up his ass

@GodEmperorDune I'm talking about the side that accepts climate change here, they're still mostly talking bullshit about this specific part online

I assume that the format is no different from past Presidents but it seems kind of dumbly meta to have your signature on the pen
Also those are sharpies

@TimStone aren't bills usually signed with the real kind of pen, with ink and stuff?

@TimStone narcissism is a helluva drug

Did his hand get less steady or something so he switched to sharpies so no one notices? Wikipedia seems to have a non-sharpie/more legible version of his signature

6:42 PM
even more fun that taxpayer money is going to make custom pens for trump's ego
@TimStone iirc it's an ergonomic thing and he's been signing things in sharpies since the 90s or 00s

So I assume like at some point he used normal pens like a normal person

maybe he likes that sharpies make his writing a bigger font

@GodEmperorDune Oh god it's not "My hands are so big so I need a big writing instrument" thing is it?

i don't think he has that kind of insight tbh

@MadScientist That's for normal presidents, not big boy ones, or something

6:45 PM
i worked at a place where the CEO was an old dude and swore off email so his secretary would print the emails in a memo form, he would write responses on them with red sharpies, then the secretary would reply accordingly

PM lost vote by 149 this time around. Was 230 last time. Theresa May now speaking but she has completely lost her voice. House is silent to hear her.

Sometimes I wish "no deal" meant "Brexit isn't actually happening", instead of "the worst possible outcome imaginable".

Another vote tomorrow will determine whether there's a no-deal #Brexit, announces @theresa_may and then possibly a Thursday vote on Article 50 extension.
Don't worry they're going to vote on that tomorrow even though as far as I know they don't actually have a choice in the matter!

I wonder why no.10 does not want a general election

The mistake here was not blaming this all entirely on Nigel Farage, throwing him in prison for uhh, I dunno, "conspiring with the Russians"? or something? and then saying they'll have to have a do over
Then promptly going "Hey look at the Americans!" and forget about the whole ordeal

@TimStone whatever happened to the guy that stole the thicc gold stick?

is there more context on this?

U.K. Parliament rejects May's Brexit plans despite last-ditch efforts to save deal
https://www.cbc.ca/news/world/brexit-vote-tuesday-1.5052554
> British Prime Minister Theresa May's plans to leave the European Union were defeated Tuesday as skeptical members of her own party readily defied her warning that Britain might not leave the EU at all if they voted against her.
Oh, no, that would be dreadful

@GodEmperorDune This is in the forced arbitration case, the appeals court judge issued a decision and the district court judge is saying that it was based on essentially willful misinterpretation by that judge

7:42 PM
@TimStone How likely do you think it is that the EU will allow the extension?

It's my understanding that they had said that they had no interest in doing so
But it's politics so tbh who knows
I wouldn't rule it out, hard to say what people think is the least destructive option at this point

@TimStone maybe ricohat will have an explainer
@TimStone not leaving would be least destructive imo
so they're probably going to do a no deal brexit for the worst of all worlds

Yeah, the tl;dr on the non-specifics of the case is that the appeals court judge misinterpreted aspects of the district court judge's case including stuff the judge said and the district court judge is officially calling the appeals court judge out on it
Before the case proceeds to the full appeals court, presumably

@MBraedley The bigger question is whether the UK manages to come up with a plan on what to do during the extension. There has to be a plausible way to come to a decision for an extension to make any sense

Which like, you rarely have lower court judges punching up for obvious reasons

7:55 PM
was the circuit judge one of the trump unqualified nominations?

@TimStone Ah, here's an article
Ellison's been on the bench for like 20 years, he was a Clinton appointee. Not sure about Smith
Reagan appointee

@Yuuki fair

@TimStone I declare bankruptcy non-material!

9:51 PM
@TimStone The most sane option right now, and I use "sane" loosely, is 1. vote "no no-deal Brexit" tomorrow"; 2. Vote "extend A50" the day after; 3. Get an extension for however long you need to organize a second referendum on whether the public wants "no deal or no brexit". 4. Go from there.

IIRC, the EU has stated that there's not going to be any more extensions.

@Yuuki Yeah, but European Court of Justice AFAIK also stated that the UK can unilaterally extend or revoke A50
And from what the news told me today, extending the A50 talks is not entirely off the table
From what I understand, some EU members are amenable to a deadline extension. Problem is the timeframe. with EU elections in several months, there is very little chance that the UK can organize a Referendum with enough time leftover to revoke A50 AND write out new elections for EU parliament in case no brexit wins

Is this going to end up like one of those "technically speaking, North and South Korea have been at war for 70 years" things?
