@BESW bounces

QUILTBAG +
Far be it from me to wonder why that is the name
Except I still kinda do

user15026
Cute acronym, I suppose?

Inclusive self-designation for minority sexual and gender identities, coined by Sadie Lee: Queer/Questioning, Undecided, Intersex, Lesbian, Trans (Transgender/Transsexual), Bisexual, Asexual, Gay/Genderqueer. And some people (like me) add + to it because... +.
It's easier to remember how to spell than any other inclusive designation I've found.

user15026
@BESW This is why I like it sometimes, my brain holds onto it

Fair enough I guess

user15026
12:52 AM
It gets a little twee when people ask what pocket I'm in in the QUILTBAG but that's more my itchiness with things in general than a dislike of having a thing

I have had issues with the LGBTQ wtv it is now
It keeps getting bigger and harder to remember with all those letters that don't make a word

user15026
This makes a word, so it's less slippery for me

@Ash [snerk]
@trogdor LGBTQ+ seems to be the standard now?

user15026
@BESW Everytime I can't help it the person who buys "female" pants in me goes "OOOOH IT HAS POCKETS"

@BESW except I don't hear mainstream media calling it that?
It always seems to be getting bigger

12:56 AM
@trogdor I prefer to look at what the community's using for itself, when possible?

I get that mainstream media isn't always the best place to get the info from though

And in my admittedly limited experience, LGBTQ+ seems to be getting the most traction as a self-identifier if a generic inclusive is needed.

@BESW that's fair then

(Where people are just talking about one identity, it's obviously preferable to just use that one because there's legit problems with lumping ALL THE NONSTANDARD STUFF together just because it's atypical.)

user15026
As a person who does the thing, yeah, LGBTQ+ is pretty shiny insofar as we gotta stick the stickers on, QUILTBAG is nice too because it includes Ace/Aro people who get forgot a lot but we important too and intersex humans and stuff

user15026
12:58 AM
Like it's the best attempt at "oh hey we are lumping all you weirdos together" I guess. :/

(Kind of like saying "person of color" to describe one Pakistani woman. Like, there are very few circumstances where that's the group it's important to note she's part of.)

user15026
(sorry, I'm tired and queer and very small today, I'm probably not my best me. I'm gonna go medicate my cat and do some faith-stuff and make tea.)

@Ash You're doing fine, you're being informative and not accusative. But yes, do the things!

@Ash you don't need to be sorry for anything

Ben
People often see me as unempathetic towards all that stuff, because my general stance on the whole thing is "are they still going with all that?"

1:01 AM

@BESW perfect

user15026
@BESW I'm telling you I think I need to tattoo this on me or something, it just keeps coming up ;)

Ben
My problem is that I find it all repetitive and frustrating not for the reasons of them supporting the cause, but because the people that don't are the ones causing the issues.

user15026
@trogdor I'm Canadian, it's reflexive ;)

user15026
@Ben I am not sure what you mean

1:02 AM
@Ash You should get a laminated card, like a medical alert. And maybe little business cards you can give people.

@Ash well move south then, problem solved eh?
Sorry that was a dumb one

user15026
@trogdor I think America and I might have some....irreconciable differnces :p

user15026
@BESW giggles my medic alert necklace does have a blank "add your own stuff" spot... :P

@Ash yeah
I already do and I technically live in America

@Ash I think it's like the person I told you about who gets distracted around singular they/them because they start thinking about how unfair it is that English has to go and make a non-gendered pronoun so awkward and exotifying.

1:03 AM
I kinda wish I didn't sometimes

user15026
@BESW I remember that conversation!

Ben
@Ash I don't, so I shall elaborate, if you wish haha

user15026
(It is unfair! It causes me much more heartache than it should but no other option stops the itchy feeling the way they/them does)

Like, an LGBTQ+ type identifier group is only necessary so long as "oh, your gender/sex is atypical" is a problem for people.

I personally wish we had all been taught from the start that non-binary genders existed

1:06 AM
If atypicality were normalized (and no, that's not a contradiction), grouping different ways of being together by virtue of their atypicality would be largely unnecessary.

As is it's pretty easy to screw up people's pronouns if I'm not concentrating on it

Ben
I have no issue with the whole LGBTLEGO thing. I don't identify with it, because I have no say in it. You know, you're gay, or Asexual, or whatever, and so long as it doesn't create a problem for me, I have zero issue with you being as open and flamboyant about it as you want to. You do you, and you do what makes you happy.

@BESW I don't technically mean It in that Context but yeah

@trogdor Yeah, I'm still teaching my brain new pathways for singular they/them, and I don't know anybody who uses constructs like xe/xir so I haven't had opportunities to practice those at all!

Ben
The problem I have with it is that the people that do have issues with the while thing, is that it is becoming my business. people are constantly trying to start debates with me about it, shoving me into support groups and so on. I understand the need for it, bit the fact that there is a need for it, is my issue with it.

1:08 AM
@BESW the series I was talking to you about that I just finished had a character that used vi vir

@trogdor I remember the first Thai student I knew decently (about a decade ago, this is) being astounded that Americans thought there were only two genders. They couldn't conceive of only two the same way many can't conceive of more than two.

@nitsua60 it's more than that though
I'm concerned personally with screwing up pronouns because I was never taught it

@trogdor Leckie's Provenance used it a bit, too. But I don't know anyone I talk about regularly who does. There's an author I read sometimes who uses it, but I don't talk about xer much.

Unlike a lot of the social skills I was taught because I couldn't learn them easily myself

user15026
@Ben Okay, can we do this without the mocking of the phrase please

1:11 AM
Should this discussion be shwooped over to the Not a Bar?

Ben
That also came across as a fair bit dismissive, which I realise in hindsight. I do apologise

@MikeQ As soon as someone asks.

user15026
@Ben That's a very pie in the sky view, honestly - I appreciate your point, but the world isn't that way and ignoring the need for the thing just means those of us who use the thing are gonna be feeling a lot of things and

user15026
okay yep, nope. Silent retreat and run away, sorry.

@Ash I need to start using that too.

1:14 AM
@Ash definitely don't apologise for that
:'(

Ben
@Ash Yes, I do understand the flaw of my point of view.
I do not want to say that I don't support it all. I really do.
Albeit with a bit of a obliviousness.
My issue is merely with those that are causing issue for LGTBQ+ community. They're the ones I dislike. They're the ones causing the conflict.
