Q: Does my isolated neon need a companion

SAM A1 of my neon tetras has fin injuries... Until they heal s/he is struggling to get to the surface to feed so I've put it in a breeder tank 3" by 5" & 3" deep (it floats in my main tank) My question is: should I add a "friend" or 2, as Neons are a schooling fish? My tank consists of 13 Neon tetra...

5:31 AM
@trondhansen Bhutu is so curious, whenevr I do something she brings her eyes within 3 inches closely monitoring whatever I am doing...

6:06 AM
@YvetteColomb beautiful horses and it looks like they have a large area where they can run.
@Sonevol cats do come a little too close at times.

yesterday I was having some omlet which Bhutu doesn't eat, she climbed on sofa, used her paws to drag my hand towards her, put her head down the plate to sniff what I am eating, got disaapointed and let me know of her disappointment by making a particular sound and jumped down............@trondhansen

6:37 AM
@YvetteColomb horses are really beautiful.......what is like average cost of maintaining a horse, including medicines?

i guess she had to see for herself if it was food for her,i think all cats do this.

@trondhansen and horse hooves needs to be trimmed? And how horses survive in wild wwithout all these care? And how mediaval armies could then afford thousands of horses?

6:52 AM
@Sonevol the cost have not changed a lot but back then the horses did work so they sort of did pay for them selves(the work they did had a higher value than the cost of having them).

@trondhansen and wild horse? how do they survive?

lots of them did not

are there wild horses now also anywhere?

yes in australia and in the us,i am not sure about europe and asia.

So why not people are just capturing and selling them......they will become billionares overnight??

7:03 AM
wild horses are exactly that wild,wild horses can and will kill you.

7:42 AM
@trondhansen they do, that's a ten acre paddock.
@Sonevol they're expensive and it varies wildly. Depends on emergency vet bills really. It easily runs into the tens of thousands per year. Feeding, agistment, equipment, worming, dental, feet, and so on
@trondhansen I have bought 3 "wild" horses. They are quite trainable. I have one now. She's a lamb :)

JAD
7:56 AM
well, given that horses were eventually domesticated, it doesn't sound impossible to do :P

@YvetteColomb if your horse is a lamb, be grateful your puppy isn't actually a bear.

JAD
@JourneymanGeek Or your cat a hippo

8:23 AM
@YvetteColomb i was answering @Sonevol about the trapping and selling wild horses and this does not sound like a good ides,they needs to be tamed before selling them :)

@trondhansen Well I have seen many hollywood movies where warriors can tame wild horses in minutes
@trondhansen And if it can be done, it is like diamond mine in the grasses of Australia and US

JAD
Hollywood of course being famed for its realism
I think you are grossly underestimating the time and skill it takes to catch, tame and train a horse and overestimating how much those horses would then sell for. There is a lot of selective breeding going on in the expensive horse business.
@Sonevol ask yourself, why is there not a gold rush of people doing that right now?

Q: cat has been acting strange for a couple of days (very worried)

joanna SpringerI have had my cat for a very long time, her behaviour towards people is antisocial but to me she is very lovable and is always sleeping by me and cuddling. for the past few days she has been eating and drinking a lot less, I have tried to give her treats ( which she loves) and she won't even touc...

Q: My nine weeks old kitten does not miaow or has silent miaow is the something wrong.?

InaHi I just bought an 9 weeks old kitten 2 days ago but I just notice that her miaow is silent no noice comes out, is this normal or is there something wrong?

9:09 AM
I learned a new word today. "agistment" (eɪd͡ʒɪstmənt) Which refers to the cost, income, or act of letting out a piece of land for the purpose of grazing. Thanks, @YvetteColomb :)

9:43 AM
@YvetteColomb Are they yours too? :o

10:13 AM
@Henders ^^^ isn't it like science fiction?
@YvetteColomb are all those horses yours?

i marked the cat acting strange question as a duplicate,it is important for me that people seek veterinary help but we have many similar questions about cats.

10:31 AM
@JourneymanGeek lol yeh true!!
@Sonevol chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/49260098#49260098 these one got in from another paddock, they're not mine. cc @Henders interlopers
@RichieACC lol yep! and it costs a fortune to pay for it

JAD
to pay for grazing land?

@trondhansen they sell them unhandled, but only people who have the experience to handle them will usually buy them. It takes an effort to train a horse. That's part of the fun for many horse lovers. That's how you get to know them :)
@JAD yep I pay $400 a week. But I no longer have to pay for feed, the pasture is fantastic

@YvetteColomb u must be rich

I own 8 horses - one may be in foal (pregnant). That's the wild one cc @trondhansen
@Sonevol most horse people will run themselves into the ground for their horses. There's a lot of memes about it.
I'm lucky, I'm financially comfortable. I live in a nice area. But the horses are a constant financial drain. But I wouldn't live without them

JAD
@YvetteColomb damn

10:37 AM
there's some people with far less and they still cope. They pay rent or mortgages and still manage the horses
I'll get you some pics hang on

JAD
compared to that, snakes are cheap :)

lol
horses are notorious for being expensive to keep

JAD
they take up a bit more space I imagine

cats are poor people's pet........logical conclusion :)

JAD
hmm, not sure how much catfood is. Probably a bit less than dogfood, just because of quantity

10:39 AM
@Sonevol we have three cats and one dog
@JAD yep def. It costs me the same to feed three cats as one dog

JAD
But in terms of food costs per unit of time, I'm not sure if there are many vertebrates that beat snakes

well, scorpions are damn cheap the..........one more reason everybody should go for scorpion

@Sonevol lmao that's funny
@JAD unit cost - expensive or cheap?
now that pic is Paddy and Tuppy ^^ smallest abd biggest

JAD
@YvetteColomb One rat (< $2) every two weeks

@YvetteColomb why funny? what is problem in taking scorpion pet seriously? :|

10:41 AM
oops
@Sonevol It made me smile.. It is funny. It's cute. Not in a mean way. I love spiders. There was a spider in my shower - up high - with his/her web for nearly a year. I went away for two weeks and she was gone. I cried. I think she died

@YvetteColomb Yeah, I guess you learn to read them. Like @JAD with snakes. I remember we chatted about how you can detect their behaviour or mood because you know them so well.

the same pair as above
@Henders yep exactomundo

once I was small there was a daddy long leg by the side of my bed...and I loved it....one day I returned from school........mom said there's surprise for me.......but first I have to quickly finish my lunch........then she showed the grasshoper in that web

This is Paddy and Banjo - both brumbies. My only boys. - y'all better be paying attention there will be a spot test later :D
@Sonevol how did you feel about the grass hopper? were you ok cos it was spider food or a bit sad?

I was elated...........I love to watch that daddy long leg feeding

10:47 AM
that is Cleo left and Tuppy right. Both on the big side. Cleo has been through a lot - a lot of questions posted about her - some on Tuppy too

@YvetteColomb are there like different breeds of horse, some run faster, some not that fast?

Brumby on left (Ava), an Arabian in the middle (Ruby) and my foal Dyani on the right
@Sonevol definitely. Cleo is a thoroughbred, Tuppy is a standardbred (they use them for trotting).

which breed is most popular as race horse?

@Sonevol thoroughbreds - referred to as TB. They are used in racing - so are Arabians and Quarterhorses
That's Dyani and Penny ^^ youngest and oldest.

@YvetteColomb These are a lovely colour

10:52 AM

JAD
I don't know much about horse breeds, except for that there is a very expensive Dutch breed of big horses

This is Ruby, the Arabian.

JAD
Frysians I think

@Henders really vibrant hey?
@JAD Friesians. Beautiful horses. Never owned one.
oh wow just saw this - in my fb feed

and there is a game of playing hockey while riding horses

10:55 AM
polo

JAD
isn't that really dangerous for the horses?

@YvetteColomb lol.............wish the eagle doesn't get electric shock while trying to eat it

@JAD polo? there's a lot of controversial issues around how horses are treated in sports
@Sonevol ikr!

@YvetteColomb and the race horses I think, they put obtacles on the sides of eyes so that the horses are forced to look straight

@YvetteColomb Hmm, I'm surprised this doesn't cut their legs.

10:59 AM
anyway - sorry if I just flooded you all and interrupted things :/

I've got one and the blades are like razors and that's before they are spinning.

@Henders me too...........hope the blades don't start rotating suddenly

there's so many issue around horses in sport I don't know where to begin. It's a long and emotional issue
Yeh I wondered the same re the blades.
It looks like it caught it mid flight

You have to be really careful not to get too near because it will give you a really nasty cut

is it like amazon delivery mission?
then the point all those delivery drones people are coming up with...........one should give a thought to the predatory birds and not make the blades sharp

JAD
11:34 AM
@Sonevol That's probably not as much of an issue as reaching in there while they are already spinning
Hi @Magisch

@Magisch I'm busy handling your flags lol

11:49 AM
@JAD How's your snakes JAD?
snor specifically

@trondhansen Bhutu just caught an ant and the ant bit Bhutu....she is now having pain...

@Magisch and where have you been? Why aren't you in here? Is it cos an Aussie woman confronts you with many questions when you are here? :D :D

@YvetteColomb I'm in the tavern
Somewhat less active as of late, although I got a taste of causing a bunch of people to lose thousands of rep again so I may be around that more :D

sorry @Henders

JAD
@Magisch doing good. Would guess she's around 130cm now :)

@JAD :3

JAD
she's starting to spend more and more time looking for food

is that because she's growing or the climate?

JAD
12:11 PM
growing
and she's a glutton

nice
how often do you let her out?

@JAD asnorable!

JAD
@YvetteColomb depends a bit. If she's active like that, I take her out almost daily. If she's just lying there, after a meal for example, I might leave her alone for a week

ofc, let her digest
makes sense

make a boot into a hide for her
then you can unironically say "there's a snake in my boot"

JAD
12:20 PM
heh

@Magisch Groan

@Henders you miss my legendary punnery?

It's almost as bad as mine, so yes ;)

@RebeccaRVT today we were having a discussion about cost of maintaining a pet. What about a bearded dragon?

Eugh, I'm tempted by a lizard

JAD
12:32 PM
IIRC they eat more frequently than snakes. But the crickets and stuff is pretty inexpensive

usually gut fed cricket are used...I guess......but that's for like geckos........the bearded dragons are large ones......once in you tube I had seen them in home being fed by owner...........some eggs stangely the eggs can be squezed with no shells
@JAD today I learnt two new terms IKR and IIRC :)

1:30 PM
I've seen the tiny pinkies my roommate feeds her new snake, it's amazing watching it eat something that's still bigger than its head.

@AllisonC That's what always surprises me about snakes. I always think 'There's no chance it can eat that' but slowly and surely it does.

@Henders I was honestly surprised, the pinky was small but her snake is absolutely tiny (unlike the last snake she had here, who lives at the pet food store where she works now)
With that snake, I'm impressed how well she completely disappears into her tank, considering I've seen her outside it and it doesn't seem like she should be able to vanish so well.

1:49 PM
@AllisonC does take anything other than food and dry aquarium set up to keep a snake...........I mean daily expense for food only?
any vet bill for snake?

@Sonevol I haven't kept a snake, but my roommate feeds Holiday I think once every two weeks, and I'm fairly sure Tiamat is on a similar schedule, just with larger mice. They both have tanks with heating lamps, water, places to hide, and a loose substrate to burrow into.
Tiamat's one of two "store pets" at my preferred pet food store, the other one is Ocho, a rose hair tarantula.

any photo of Ocho I bet Ocho must be beautiful

2:11 PM
I'm arachnophobic so I don't have any. :) I think they have photos of her on their facebook page.

That was the view this morning when I was putting fuel in my car

JAD
@Sonevol daily expense for food is rather weekly. Otherwise, you need heating, either through lamps or mats or whatever, which costs money. And the bedding isn't cheap, but isn't needed all that often.
@AllisonC I remember when I started my Boa on fuzzies. Was kinda scared on whether they were small enough

and vet bill any?

JAD
nop
well, I haven't needed it

so what when they get sick?

JAD
2:22 PM
then I would need it
I've had snakes for ~8 years now. No need yet
@AllisonC also the first time she ate medium rats, because my Ball python didn't eat. She was so round afterwards :o

@JAD I bet that was really something to see!
I don't think snakes are the pets for me, but I'm fascinated with them and like observing them.

@AllisonC This is exactly how I feel too. I'm fascinated by them but I don't think I'd want to keep one myself :P

JAD
:O

Sorry, @JAD :P
Unless I get a tiny one to live in a tank where there's fish and stuff. I can't remember what they're called

@Henders I would like one pet of each species......but for horses I guess huge money I need

2:30 PM
You can buy some very expensive fish too :P

I currently spend enough on my cats, any pet can be expensive. :)

@Henders really like how much?

@Sonevol There's one in my local pet store for £1,700
but that's not a great example of the fish. You could pay well over £5,000 for one :O

@AllisonC cats can't be xpensive at all.....yearly vaccine, litter, food and toys
@Henders and who buys them?

@Sonevol I spend $150/month just on food for them, probably $40-60 on litter, about $70-ish on their vet plans, $20 right now on supplements, plus incidental toy and vet costs. Cats can be very expensive.

2:35 PM
^ this is the fish (the one he's talking to at the start of the video not the ones he collects)

I spend Rs. 4000 on food, 1000 on litter, 2000 per year for vaccine and 500 for each vet check up. Even a lower end house hold can easily afford 3 4 cats

I'm doing 3 cats on premium food and litter, and I don't actually pay per vet visit, I pay a monthly fee per cat that covers vet visits and all vaccines.

@Sonevol How do I convert that to GBP?
@AllisonC Like an insurance thing? That's smart

80 rs = 1 GBP
and my food, litter are all premium

@Henders very similar, it covers routine care but not emergency care, so I'll probably add emergency plans onto them as they get older.

2:40 PM
@AllisonC here we have two vet treatments...........free at govt. hospitals ......and paid at private hospitals

@Sonevol So it costs you ~£87 a year to run 4 cats?
@AllisonC Yeah, that's smart. I would do that too because I never want it to be a decision between money and my pet.

No that's the cost I said for Bhutu, so it will be multiplied by 4

Shame most vets don't really know much about Fish in my experience :/

@Sonevol We have only private vet clinics here

@Sonevol Ah, sorry I misunderstood. So that's £348 for 4 cats.

2:42 PM
@AllisonC I go to private..but many go to govt.....and govt. ones are not bad

@Henders It's been a big help, not long after I got her Artemis got a very bad upper respiratory infection, so I had to take her in daily for just a checkup and didn't have to pay for a single visit.

@Henders don't know whether it is high or low in Britain

We have some free services to low-income households at the SPCA here, and even then, they will ask for a donation. The rest is all private clinics.

My costs are a little high compared to what some people pay, my parents use a more standard food and litter for their cats, and only do routine vaccinations. Most of theirs are barn cats, too, so they use much less litter since they're doing much of their business outdoors.

@AllisonC yeah, pays for itself there

2:44 PM
@Henders Very quickly, since the fee is about $30-ish per month, and one visit is $60.

@RichieACC here at govt. facilities it is totally free..bill is paid by state govt.

@Sonevol how does the quality of care compare?

In private there is pet luxury...in govt. there is no pet luxury............but I higly doubt that pets have any understanding of what constitutes luxury............treatment wise both are same
@Henders so 87 GBP is high or low?

I don't own a cat so I don't know if that is much for cats

Nobody owns a cat...

2:48 PM
Heh
True

They're just graced with the cat's presence in their life.

@Sonevol 87 GBP for the year is pretty cheap - my insurance is ~174GP a year per cat
add in food etc and it adds up

I use Whiskas food, premium made in Canada litter @motosubatsu
no I mean @Henders the food price and litter price I gave is per month and vet price I gave is per year...............everything is so confusing
@Henders ^^^

What's your total then? :P

4000*12 + 1000*12 + 2000 + 500*4
64,000

2:56 PM
So £800 a year

google search gives GBP 679.68
So now this is high or low?
here we yet don't have any company providing pet insurance...........u have money go to private........u don't have money...go to govt.

I'm dividing by 80 like you said above

yeay rupee seems to have strengthened or pound weakened :)
so is it high or low?

@Sonevol I'm not sure if it's different where you are, Whiskas here is a basic brand. I'm curious now how the same brands might vary in different parts of the world.
I know some sodas here are higher quality from other countries

3:26 PM
in norway a vet visit cost about 65 euro this includes vaccsines and a simple examination.
this is for one cat and is the lowest cost i know of at any vet here.
sorry i forgot it did include a blood sample too.

this curreny conversion is so confusing.......nothing can be understood @trondhansen
@AllisonC Also here Whiskas wet is 5 times more expensive than Whiskas dry

Whiskas Wet would definitely be better than Whiskas dry. :)

@Sonevol Whiskas is decent value.. not the best quality but certainly not bad before I had to put Mycroft on his diet mine were on Whiskas for wet food

3:42 PM
I feed a brand called Wellness, it's reasonable for premium canned food and I don't know if it's available in other countries. My last cat ate Weruva, which is quite expensive. Thankfully, Wellness comes in big (soup-can or dog-food-can sized) cans; three cats eat a can and a half per day.

JAD
that's a lot

@AllisonC well here no can cat food is available at all..........only in packets..........even in amazon...............forget local store

We have some packet foods, but they'd be very expensive for me to feed 3 cats, and I don't think the pouches are recyclable so I'd feel wasteful. I have to go to a specialty store for food and litter (the national chain doesn't carry the large cans of Wellness but has small ones in an emergency, they're closer than the local chain).
For the supplements, I have to order them from Amazon once a month.
Because of the amount of food my roommates' dogs eat, they have to have it all shipped.

other brands available here --- drools, purepet,cataholic, sheba, me-o, maxi, meat up, farmina
but whiskas is the predominant giant followed by me-o
among dog's food the most selling brand is pedigree

We have Sheba here, the rest must be specific to your region of the world.
I think the most predominant ones here might be Purina for dry, and Friskies, 9 Lives, and Fancy Feast for wet, but I'm not really sure. I know my dad feeds Purina and 9 Lives, and thinks I spend too much on food. :)

3:56 PM
and on dog front? over here pedigree beats others by a long shot
@AllisonC no be honest Bhutu is now refusing dry food and wants only wet food, but we have still 7kg of dry food in stock....so we have to for the time being give Bhutu wet food every other day

Purina and Pedigree I think are pretty common. I'll be honest, I don't look much at dog food. I haven't had a dog since last century, and I didn't buy his food back then. :)

My cats just have iams
/me shrugs

My fish just have flakes.
(And sometimes king prawns or scallops) :P

my fish have pellets
my turtle has dry food and sometimes meal worms
and he loves strawberries

I forgot about Iams, Eukanuba, Science Diet, all those things. :) I've been shopping the premium stores for so long now...

4:03 PM
the guinea pigs have pellets, hay, fresh veg

Nice, I didn't know you had guinea pigs... or did I
Oh Boris
Yes, I remember now

I am dying for a photo of Ocho @AllisonC

all this talk of pet food reminds me..need to get some more ordered

well we got 3

I have to take a long lunch today, we're about to get hit with more snow after record total snowfall for February
And the cat food won't last through tomorrow.

4:13 PM
I just had diner, hand made roasted bread, fish soup, lentil soup and potato-opiumSeed curry

@Sonevol I found a creepy Halloween photo on my friend's facebook
@Sonevol I sent it to you directly, I felt it might be too much for the room. My apologies if it's too much for you!

Q: Need Parrot Care Tips

Maria Joseta RamirezI just bought myself a parrot as a pet. I'm following the care tips on this site. If someone has a parrot at home and can share their experience and knowledge it would be helpful. Thanks
