It's a nice theoretical question, but SO is not for theoretical questions, or tutorials, but to help with specific programming problems, you can see what is on topic in the help center. The world is full of interesting yearly traditions.  Take for example the tomato and orange throwing events, the buffet for monkeys,  and the cheese rolling festivities.  With such examples of human creativity, we at Stack Overflow could not pass on this opportunity.  We have created and maintained our own yearly tradition – Winter Bash!

Depends on the: business, project, knowledge, qualities of new hires. "Is it worth ... having someone focus on documenting ... ?" In my own observations, maintaining past knowledge pays off.
