12:11 AM
Huh
That sounds a bit like the planning sessions we had for June's game

12:29 AM
I had it in mind when making contributions to that setting, yes.

Ah ok

2 hours later…
2:12 AM
@BESW I seem to recall that Zelazny's Amber stories were more or less a Pantheon (family) in conflict with each other. Been years since I read them.

The most interested I ever got in Zelazny was Lord of Light, and (aside from the Kirby art and associated real-world history) that was mostly wondering what it could've been in the hands of someone who wasn't just a tourist of the cultures being used.

1 hour later…
Ben
3:36 AM
Afternoon all

3:59 AM
Noonafter you
XD

1 hour later…
Ben
5:20 AM

...I should re-watch that show.

I should pre-watch that show

It was weird. I wouldn't necessary recommend it to everyone, I'm not exactly sure why I liked it.

That's how I describe myself.

Ben
@MikeQ "I don't knw why I'm likeable, but people tell me that I am, so hopefully you'll have the same outlook"
I get that

5:32 AM
@kviiri haloo

@MikeQ Halojata halloo

@BESW what show?

@trogdor The source of that gif is Danger 5.

Delightful morning to all

Ben

5:39 AM
I had a really productive last night, still feeling the vibes of achievement

Ben
It would appear I'm in meme-mode. I'll try to reign it in haha

Memetastic morning to all

@BESW ah,.. I had never heard of it, or I had forgotten about it

Ben
@trogdor [jim-carrey.gif]

@trogdor It's like if you tried to make a live-action Archer with the aesthetic of Kung Fury on the budget of old-school Doctor Who.

Ben
5:42 AM
Everything has a meme... a meme for everything
@BESW You have my attention

@BESW how,.... Odd

Ben
@BESW I can see your hesitation to recommend it.

Archer definitely isn't my style

In other words, it's a low-budget 2010s TV show that's trying to do an 80s-style parody of spy TV shows from the 60s.

I saw a few episodes and it just,.. tried way too hard to hit the absurdly uncomfortable humor

5:45 AM
If you're thinking "that sounds like a glorious mess," you're right.
But YMMV whether it's more "glorious" or more "mess."

I realize some people like that kind of thing but I can't stand it
Really no one element causes the particular problem but Archer had enough of them in combination to make me too uncomfortable to enjoy it

You'll notice I haven't tried to get you to watch Danger 5.

Yes
Like, I actually like irrelevant humor in small enough doses for example

user15026
@BESW I feel like that would either be awesome or I would hate it

I think Archer has its upsides but I think I would like it more if it was a more straight espionage parody in the style of Get Smart instead of audacious shock value stuff

Ben
5:50 AM
Along those lines, I saw "Wet Hot American Summer" on Netflix, and the voice actor for Archer was on it (H. Jon Benjamin). It was uncomfortable until he got turned into a sentient can of beans, since I'd only ever known him from Archer

I've only seen a half of the first season though, so I dunno what it later grew to be like. (Except I know they changed from espionage to drugs later on)

But combined with say,... Sex jokes, or jokes at the expense of people who are already looked down on by society
Or mixing it with messed up family Dynamics
All those things were in the couple episodes of Archer I saw,... At Least as I remember it

@Ash As Troggy has picked up, it's rather mean-spirited.

user15026
Ah. then I'm out

@BESW I figured
When you mentioned Archer
And just to clear it up,... No I don't mind other people liking Archer or shows like it
I just can't wring enjoyment out of it myself

5:52 AM
Man, I should re-watch Get Smart. They used to air them in the early 2000's as a part of some "old goodies" lineup on our public broadcasting channels

My loss really,... I guess XD

@kviiri Those were great.

@Ash yeah,... That's my exact idea on the subject

Also the original Mission: Impossible, especially the first couple seasons when they were still getting plots from the books.

@trogdor Naa, there's plenty of good TV out there. You're not really missing out :)

5:53 AM
@kviiri true

Ben
Bob's Burgers

I'm also watching Adventure Time now. It's quickly grown to one of my favorites

More than I could watch in at least a couple lifetimes I'm sure
@kviiri I tried the first episode and it didn't really grab me
I certainly didn't hate it but
It wasn't "I need to see more" territory

@trogdor the same happened to me, but I watched a couple of more episodes over the following months whenever I needed to pass 12 minutes on something and it's slowly getting better

user15026
I have been so stuck with TV lately, nothing seems to hold my attention

user15026
5:56 AM
But I have been reading books instead, so now I am up to 342 books read this year

user15026
so I guess that is something

Ben
Brooklyn Nine Nine

user15026
@Ben ooooh yes that was good

@Ash That's at least 1 book per day. How?

I'm not sure where the quality ramps up, or whether it's just character building making the series more appealing

5:57 AM
@Ash godang that is a lot of books

Ben
Don't Trust the B in apartment 23

user15026
@MikeQ 1,1 books per day, yeah

More than one a day is far higher than I can manage without very specific types of books

user15026
I read fast, I read a lot.

And also, new Ducktales. We just watched the Sky Pirate episode, it was hilarious

5:57 AM
@MikeQ Ash is a superfast reader, and not all the books are Digger-size potential murder weapons.

Spoiler, I couldn't get that many of those books XD

Ben
Audiobooks help too

user15026
@kviiri I need to find a spot to catch that

I read maybe slightly faster than average but I retain what I read really well

user15026
@BESW Digger was last year at some point, I think! (I always read it lying on my bed because that was the ONLY way I could, too heavy.)

5:59 AM
The problem with Adventure Time is, it makes 11 minutes feel like normal animated show length. The usual 22 minutes feels long after that :D

user15026
@BESW yeah some of it is like middle grade stuff or novellas or whatever but I figure it all counts

user15026
I'

user15026
I read something silly like 800-1k wpm

I need like, a weekend to read one or two books, and I have to be motivated by just how much I like the material

user15026
(I also don't lie when I say I read a lot, I walk and read, I ride the bus and read)

6:00 AM
Ah yeah I used to do that
But it was not exactly safe so my parents took pains to train me out of that

user15026
that makes sense!

I would read crossing the street

user15026
(sorry, didn't mean to derail, I honestly forget not everyone reads like me)

Same honestly
When people said in highschool that they forgot the reading material I would ask them why they didn't just read it all once the day before

user15026
@BESW Funny thing I think you will appreciate - when I was still working on the GIANT PILE of immigration papers, I wanted to see how much it would cost to mail. I have no scale, so I couldn't weigh the papers. So I just stacked them beside Digger, because I know it's 4lbs of book. So when I was done, I knew I had between 1-1.5 lb of papers. (It was something like 1.2 lb or something)

6:03 AM
Nice!

Anything where I actually bothered to read a textbook and all the answers to tests were in there I didn't really need to work at a class

Ben
I have the issue where my brain shuts down when I'm reading, then I realise I'm thinking about the physics of trains, and I missed the last three paragraphs of what Harry was doing in the Chamber of Secrets

@Ben Spoiler: it's not a euphemism.

Lol

@BESW Although the entrance is in the Chamber of Secretions

6:04 AM
I get really focused when I read

I could read fast (but not Ash-fast) if I could get invested in the book. But if I get annoyed with the characters or story or writing style, I have trouble continuing.
So outside of work and academics I don't leisure read too much anymore

Ben
@MikeQ I had that issues with The Bartimaeus Trilogy, where the book was split into two perspectives: third person perspective of the wizard Nathaniel, and the First Peron perspective of Bartimaeus the Djin

I think I could read Ash fast but I wouldn't enjoy it
And my retention would be shot

Ben
I didn't enjoy reading Nathaniel's perspective - it was mysterious and disconnected, but I had to in order to get back to what Bartimaeus was dealing with - fun, fast paced and witty

user15026
6:08 AM
my retention is in the 80% range I think

Or it could be that Ash is some kinda time wizard
XP

Ben
@trogdor I was going to tell a time travel joke, but you guys didn't like it

user15026
@trogdor don't reveal my secrets ;)

Lol

@Ben I had this issue with Kingkiller chronicles. Book 1 sets a pace and book 2 maintains that pace until around halfway through. The story changes, the tone changes. Really had to force myself to get through the rest.

Ben
6:12 AM
@MikeQ In that case I would definitely lose interest before that point, especially if I didn't know it was coming

Same thing with A Feast For Crows. Introduced a wave of new POV characters, few of whom were nearly as interesting as the established characters. Writing quality dropped too. Felt like I was reading a clunky fanfiction.
@Ash As the resident bibliophile and possibly bibliophage, do you have any advice for easily frustrated readers like moi

user15026
@MikeQ Short of "figure out what works, find more of that" no

user15026
Like if you know what you do like I can try to suggest but like...most of what I read is romance novels of all flavours, so

Like what kind of romance novels are we talking here

user15026
Anything!

user15026
6:20 AM
(Seriously. I can rec all sorts.)

I'm a bit tired of the recycled story elements of scifi and fantasy novels, so I'm open to try a different genre

@MikeQ Have you considered historical fiction? I've liked Edward Rutherfurd's novels a lot

user15026
Well, what do you like in books?

@Ash Hard to generalize, but I'd say the same thing I like to see in any narrative: A cast of distinct characters, and their interactions with each other
Something that spans TTRPGs, games, movies, books: Interesting things happen when diverse characters interact on-screen

(I'll vouch for Ash's ability to recommend romance novels, provided one is able to articulate one's preferences.)
(Took a few tries before I knew what I liked.)

user15026
6:24 AM
@MikeQ Okay, that's a little vague, what sort of genres do you like? Contemporary? Historical?

user15026
How okay are you with explicitness?

Mystery, intrigue, and satire, and I have no sense of decency

user15026
Okay, give me a bit to finish playing Hearthstone with my husband and I will see what I can come up with

@Ash By far the only author I consistently like is Pratchett

@Ash Does Clockaur Wars count as romance?

6:29 AM
@Ash I think Gaiman and Stephen King are generally fun, especially dark/horror stuff, but they have a few stinkers

user15026
@BESW Maybe? sorta? Vernon/Kingfisher is SO HARD to pigeonhole :P

@MikeQ oh just got one of his books in the mail
I've only read the first one but I have wanted to try more Discworld

@trogdor They're great. Colour of Magic is a fun satire of many fantasy tropes. The other books focus more on satirizing aspects of society, both modern and historical.

@Ash I have no idea what % to attach to my retention, i've been tested on it before but I feel like those tests were not very exhaustive

user15026
@trogdor Mine is just an aggregate of various testing I've done

6:33 AM
@MikeQ I have heard some of them are better than others too
@Ash short term I am tempted to say my retention is like, 90-100%, but I have no extensive basis for it

user15026
@MikeQ Tihs makes me wanna rec Kris Ripper's Scientific Method, but....they're VERY explicit and very kinky and VERY thinky in the like relationship processing sense.

hehe kinky thinky
sorry
couldn't help it

user15026
No worries :)

user15026
They're a series I love, but they're....a lot in like every aspect of everything?

user15026
But they have an interesting mix of characters over the series (especially if you read all the spinoff bits....it's complicated.)

6:36 AM
I am not so into romance stuff

user15026
Actually, Kith and Kin might work and it's not so much on the explicit kink end

also explicit isn't my cup of tea, at least most of the time

user15026
@trogdor I have read some sweet romance (aka fade to black, no sex on page) that has been quite good

that could work maybe?
I don't hate the romance stuff
like, Tales of the Otori has a romance plot tied into the main story

user15026
Okay, yeah, @MikeQ I take back the Scientific Method rec, but do recommend Kith and Kin: goodreads.com/book/show/35126537-kith-and-kin

6:38 AM
but it didn't get explicit

user15026
Molly Harper's Half Moon Hollow is fun if you like a bit of murder sort of intigue, and paranormal stuff. They're also quite funny.

and I felt it tied in well to,... well literally all the other obligations the main character had that pulled him in a ridiculous number of directions

user15026
IF you want similar, but no paranormal, her Southern Eclectic books work.

user15026
Ana Mardoll's Earthside books are also good: goodreads.com/book/show/27999067-poison-kiss

user15026
Mary Robinette Kowal's Lady Astronaut of Mars stuff is good too

user15026
6:41 AM
Okay, I'm done for now :P

show off :P

user15026
giggles I just like sharing books!

nothing wrong with that at all
I just got An Unkindness of Ghosts in the mail
loving the heck out of it right now as I read it
I havn't multi tasked and read at the same time in a while

user15026
@trogdor Wendy Sparrow's books might work for you. :)

I forgot how freaking fun it is XD

6:45 AM
@Ash Ooh, I've only read the short story but it was great.

user15026
@BESW I haven't read teh second one because i am saving it like a good candy or something but Calculating Stars is seriously one of the best things I read this year

@Ash something I can't do,... if I have a book I want to read it is the current one on the block, even if I had something I was already in the middle of reading

user15026
@trogdor I am often like that!

I used to not read multiple books at once but that was when I didn't,... realize I could just stop reading something XD
and move on to something I am more interested in

user15026
@trogdor The biggest gift I have given myself is going "It is OKAY to give up on books"

6:49 AM
yeah
there was a time when I literally couldn't do that

Ben
...Does the name "John Weekes" mean anything to anyone?

I don't know what it was
but one day I realized I didn't have to keep reading,... whatever it was at the time and I could move on to,... whatever it was at the time
it was probably whatever was after that,... really graphic book
Disgrace I think?
yep that was the one
well, the one before,... probably
there were so many,... horrible people in that book, especially the main character
it might be one of the reasons I don't like explicit sex (or at least not very much most of the time)

Ben
7:12 AM
Me: I was going to tell you a time travel joke, but you didn't like it
Them: Do you want to die? This is how you die.
Me: …
Them: …
Me: See?

sorry, I made that very serious

user15026
It's all good :) I was just opening a bunch of Hearthstone packs and giggling over random cards (I am still like learning the game but opening stuff is fun. Kinda like how I am very much a new baby at Magic, but I like opening up cards and reading them. I suck at deckbuilding though

user15026
My husband is trying to help me learn Hearthstone, it's pretty fun so far

Ben
@Ash I feel like Blizzard games generally have acute followings. You only like one of their games, and none of the others. Lol

user15026
@Ben I loooooove WoW. Hearthstone is reasonably fun. I am super bad at Hearthstone but I am bad at most strategy that TCG stuff requires

user15026
7:24 AM
Anything else of theirs I don't really follow at all. Like I know some about Starcraft because World played a LOOOT of it so I learned some by osmosis, but it won't be anything I play, Anything else they've done I've not touched at all other than, well, I am a Arqade mod so I get a lot of random tidbits by breathing in the site all teh tiime

Ben
7:43 AM
Indeed. I'm a Diablo follower, and just through osmosis I know about the other games, but as you said, not anything I'll be playing any time soon lol

I'd place myself in a separate category of "liking almost everything they did a long time ago and almost nothing they do now".

@Miniman same here
although I might get back into Heros of the Storm and Starcraft 2 some of the time, maybe, at some point
depends if I miss the two types of games and don't have anything else at the time I guess

8:04 AM
It's ok, though. Diablo Immortal will bring all Blizzard fans back into the fold, because it's so clearly what all of us wanted.

8:16 AM
what exactly is Diablo Immortal?

The long-awaited Diablo sequel! ...which, in Blizzard's wisdom, they decided to make an outsourced mobile game.

8:29 AM
lololololol
yes, Blizzard, has their ear right on the pulse,... of the fanbase
yessir

slight misrepresentation

Ben
8:50 AM
I watched the reveal with the live chat feed. You could see the moment where it died
Personally, I'm invested, but only from a lore perspective
That being said... the lore was not something they really focussed on to be gin with, and it's only become something important later
@Miniman Also it's a pre-sequel. Diablo 2.5

@Ben Oh, I hadn't heard that bit.

Ben
Yeah. It takes place after the destruction of the Worldstone, but before the events of Diablo 3, and they're focussing on "what was Deckard doing" and "why did Malthael leave heaven"
Etc etc.

@Miniman awaited? After Diablo 3 someone is awaiting a sequel?

@Derpy Nice.

Ben
I think that could be roughly translated from "the long awaited sequel" to "much needed reboot"

9:05 AM
@Miniman you mean the same Diablo 3 that had the staff call the fan base racist because of the "why is Tyrael black?" protest?

@Derpy I wasn't disagreeing with you - that "nice" was as in "nice burn".

(A little context on that protest: the fanbase wasn't mad because he was portrayed as such, just because he wasn't in D2. Ah, continuity...)

Ben
@Derpy There are two sides to the fan-base. The fans that drive halfway across the country to buy the Rick & Morty inspired Sezchuan sauce, and claim that "they're a Rick and anyone else that says otherwise is clearly a Morty", and then the rest of us.
In diablo's case, there are those that complain about the story, and come up with such pointless arguments, and those that point out the issues with the auction house, the requirement to always be online, and the immediate lack of difficulty with the game.

@Ben oh, well, lack of any internal story consistence I wouldn't call pointless, even if Diablo wasn't ever focused on story to begin with. But yep, the auction house thing was just the added frosting the game needed...
We require you to be online only to protect you from the evil evil hackers that could cheat.
In your offline games
For items not bought in our auction house
Totally not a money grab thing

Ben
9:51 AM
Best and worst multiclass Combination?

Ben
10:16 AM
Of your personal preference

10:33 AM
@Ben Best? Fighter 1/literally anything else. Worst? Sorlock, obviously.

Ben
10:51 AM
@Miniman Sorlock?

@Ben Sorcerer/warlock. The source of endless cheese, debate, controversy, and overration.

Ben
@Miniman That is a very... interesting combo

@Ben Fighter 1, on the other hand, gives anyone a starting AC of 21 as well as Con saving throw proficiency. Simple, straightforward, and awesome.

Ben
Fighter barb seems a bit redundant
just at a glance...

Not at all! Barb has no native access to fighting styles, so dual-wielding barb (for example) is impossible without a fighter level.
Which is especially sad, because dual-wielding sucks less for barbs than most people. (Caveat: it still sucks.)

11:01 AM
Back in 3.5 I toyed with fighter/barb/ranger multiclassing a few times, in order to get the exact right mix of features for the flavor I wanted.

Ben
@Miniman Well… That does open some avenues. I have a Barb that I want to actually use dual wielding... so that would likely prove very useful
Bard/Rogue
Which does immediately lead me to this
lol

@Ben You can make a strong argument that a fighter level doesn't do much for a Monk, but Mariner or Dueling are still nice.

Ben
I suppose that's still feasible since it's just one level, though
@Miniman unrelated - did I ever talk to you about the possibility of the "heroes" of Diablo 1 having had experienced demons before entering the cathedral?

11:22 AM
@Ben Yep!

Ben
Fair enough. I thought I might have - just couldn't quite remember

It's interesting - in D1 and D2, it's sort of suggested that demons crop up in the wake of the Prime Evils, but the journals and such in D3 suggest that demons are everywhere in Sanctuary. Although I guess that's in a post-Worldstone Sanctuary.

Ben
@Miniman Really?
Because if that's the case, that makes a big difference to my answer

@Miniman That's back in the beginning of Sanctuary, long before modern day. Current demons are there because of the prime evils.

Ben
Hang on... just going back over it, I think I see how it all worked. Sanctuary was meant to be off-limits from Heaven and Hell... They knew of its existence, they just couldn't find it, until The Vizjerei summoned the first demon. Thus placing the fisrt breadcrumb.
That's how the Prime Evils were banished there, (though how they were able to is still fuzzy).
But that ties in with Demons appearing in Sanctuary of their own accord. Once the Prime Evil's influences managed to grow, other demons could make their way in/be summoned in under their command

11:41 AM
Here's the timeline as I understand it:
- IN THE BEGINNING: Inarius creates Sanctuary using the Worldstone, which simultaneously also hides it from the Great Conflict. Sanctuary is explicitly created as a place for angels and demons to live together in harmony separate from the Great Conflict, so there must have been demons in the beginning.
- Angels and demons interbreed and create the Nephalem.
- Inarius partners with Lilith.
- Lilith wants to use the Nephalem for her personal army, so she murders every other angel and demon other than Inarius.

Ben
The Triune... yes. Forgot about that bit

Ben
11:55 AM
All said and done though, the period of time between the Prime Evils being sealed, and the events of Diablo 1 was still ~200 years

That bit I always lose sight of - everything in Sanctuary's past is presented as ancient history.

Ben
Yeah

Everything from the saga of Inarius and Lilith and the creation and decline of the Nephalem and Sanctuary is "ancient history" to the extent we don't have dates for it, I think.

Ben
12:15 PM
The earliest "Date" is -2300
Which is apparently the earliest appearance of "civilisation"

[wanders in, is confused] I know Dr. Magnus is nigh-immortal, but I didn't think she was that old.

Ben
Discussing Diablo Lore

lol

12:31 PM
@trogdor oh my gosh your avatar
it's beautiful

Ben
1:15 PM
Annoyingly, it's in reverse, but this playlist covers the whole of the Lore in Diablo, which is pretty decent. cc @Miniman @doppelgreener youtu.be/1Y8KCb9a2XM?list=PLynOeXfVv8P6WVzoMp0ArUXgIeY76MIa9

@Ben shiny!
@BESW quick question, under the assumption you're four people, would it make sense that each one corresponds to a cardinal direction, i.e. West, South, East, and Borth?
4

Ben
...
No.…….
:P

1:33 PM
@doppelgreener I've been parsing BESW like that for ages too. Probably helps that I label directions by NESW in my thesis a lot :D

Ben
Ben East South West?

@Ben ....... :O

2 hours later…
3:18 PM
Anyone around and want to chat about pathfinder 2e? The last of the biweekly updates is out (1.6) and it seems really solid. Barbarians get more randomness in their rage (rather than static 2 rounds on, 1 round off), Somatic Casting doesn't require a free hand, and a bunch of other interesting changes

I'm not really a PF guy but what's the somatic casting about if it doesn't require hands?

Well, it requires that you not be bound or otherwise restrained so you can still stop wizards from casting, and Somatic Casting still has the Manipulate trait and can thus provoke Attacks of Opportunity
But it doesn't require you to have a free hand - you can make the motions even if your hands are full or somesuch. You can also deliver touches (like for Heal or Shocking Grasp) while your hands are full, so long as there's a reasonable way to do so (fist bump of Healing!)
So greatsword clerics and halberd wizards don't need to have the terrible action economy of Free action drop hand off weapon; 1-3 action casting; 1 action re-grasp weapon.

Ah
Yeah, bad component-equipment interactions are one of my main grievances about DnD 5e (in addition to it being DnD :D)

Yeah, pf2e seems to be trying to get rid of a lot of that headache by opening up more flexibility, as well as using traits to try and make interactions much more well-defined
Like, there's never any question on whether something is a "Move action" - if it is, it has the Move trait (or it causes you to take an action with the Move trait)

2 hours later…
5:39 PM
Slow Thursday, I guess?

Guess so!
I love how in this question before it was edited people thought it was unclear bu could have been one of two or three different situations. It ended up being none of them lol. Just goes to show: always ask for clarification from OP if you have any doubts.

@Rubiksmoose Yup - i was NOT expecting that turn in the question.

So the original interpretations were generally on getting extra advantages (TWF with a two-hander and a longsword or somesuch), but the real question was "can I attack, switch grips to hold my greatsword in one hand (unused for now), and draw my longsword to attack next round"?

@NautArch Me neither! What a twist!
@Delioth The other interpretations were: the character was using TWF / using Extra Attack

Ah, those interpretations are definitely sensible; I could see that\
They weren't my first interpretation when I read it before edits, but I know they were the initial answers' interpretations (so I held off on voting or commenting until clarification came through)
