Q: Writing/Poetry technique - Requiring reader to have prior knowledge

Ben10In the poem "The Red Wheelbarrow" by William Carlos Williams, for the reader to infer the context of the poem - why so much depends on the red wheelbarrow, the reader has to know that William Carlos was a physician - which is pretty uncommon prior knowledge. What language/poetry technique is thi...

Q: Does a translation editor need to know the language of the source document?

theyuvIf an editor is editing a translated work, does he need to know the language of the original source document? The editor is in contact with the client and can therefore ask him questions if something isn’t clear. So does the editor really need any knowledge of the source language? What about fo...

Good going @heather. Three nice answers this week and you've managed to gain 200+ rep and jump 5 places in the rep leagues.

Q: What is the humour behind these lines in 'The Importance Of Being Earnest'?

Scarlett Evans Algernon: This is a great disappointment.I am obliged to go up by the first train on Monday morning.I have a business appointment that I am anxious...to miss? Cecily: Couldn't you miss it anywhere but in London? Algernon:No: the appointment is in London.

@Bookworm personal experience: yes
I recently had a case where the original translator had written down the exact opposite of what the original text meant. I only caught it because I was reading the original text as well.
I'm unsure that the question is on-topic here, though.

6:50 PM
@Randal'Thor thanks =) i kinda want to break the 3k barrier soon-ish, so hopefully there'll continue to be questions i can answer

@heather absolutely isn't a bounty coming your way

7:18 PM
@Mithrandir Precedent suggests it probably is. We've had a number of similarly broad/general questions about the process of translation.
(I'm also unsure of whether all those should be on-topic, but they've done well so far.)

@Randal'Thor Hmm. Might write an answer then.

@heather Any particular tags you're keen on? I may be willing to post questions aimed for specific on-site experts ;-)
Which reminds me, I should come up with another Thomas Hardy question while @Fabjaja is pingable.

@Randal'Thor I've got a copy of A Pair of Blue Eyes around that's on my to-read list.
So... maybe some new questions from me, as soon as I get around to that.

@Mithrandir Hmm, that's one I don't know anything about.

7:47 PM
@Bookworm Put an answer together. I probably need to rework it to flow better - it resembles a stream of consciousness at the moment - but it makes enough sense that I posted it.

@Randal'Thor Any lord of the rings or tolkien questions - I've read a lot of his books, including some more of his lesser-known stuff like The Fall of Arthur/The Legend of Sigurd and Gudrun/etc. I've been banging my head against the wall on your narnia question though =)
@Mithrandir your new avatar threw me off =) hello!

@heather Heh. Hi! :D

@Mithrandir huh...the avatar looks kinda like that one character from Muzzy, but not quite. who is it?

Me. Sorta.

oh, cool!
presumably slightly more blue though ;)

7:54 PM
It's an "artists conception" based on my previous avatar and what I've said in the past :P
It's a cropped version of this:

wow. kudos to the artist! who was it?

(Designed and drawn by avazula.)

@Mithrandir The drawing style looks to me a lot like those Usborne Puzzle Adventure books.
Specifically the face.

Doesn't... really look similar to me, but... :P

I might be thinking of a different book from the one in that question. Not sure if they were all illustrated by the same person.
Or I might just be going crazy ;-)

7:59 PM
for some reason (and now looking at it more closely i am aware that these aren't really similar at all) it reminded me of Princess Sylvie from Muzzy (third photo in link)

o_o

really no idea why I thought that.
in my defense, last time I saw anything from muzzy was when I was a little kid =P

This is getting to be a competition for who can find the drawing it looks least like :-P

heh

@Randal'Thor lol
ouch

8:01 PM
(that was directed at myself as well as you)

@Randal'Thor i think the pictures you linked do look kind of similar, for the record, though i'm aware that's not exactly a ringing endorsement =)
so how is life treating you all?

trying to convince myself to stop procrastinating... and to actually study

heh

(I'm being half-successful.)

i have some math and english homework i've been procrastinating a bit. nothing too bad though.

8:13 PM
One of my only complaints about homeschooling is that it's not really conductive to beating procrastination due to the lack of hard deadlines.

yeah, but then on the other hand homeschooling is probably really good preparation for college in that sense (much less prompting to get something done)

Whether or not I'm going to college is a bit of a question :P I'm kinda ambivalent about it. I have to see if I can get out of the army before thinking about it much....
or possibly getting out of the army and then volunteering, which guarantees me a better position, in exchange for a longer commitment

any particular reason you're ambivalent about college? (you don't have to answer - just curious.)

don't really see the point. i could study on my own, and the internet...
and i have the ability to do a job i like {translating / editing) already (and have been doing some already (see my answer for more details :P)), and i don't really see the point of heading to a more... formal, kind of, education

the whole idea of having a institution dedicated to learning just really appeals to me personally i suppose...like stepping into a library. i could probably spend my whole life studying all the things i'm interested in, though of course that isn't practical. but i can definitely see what you mean.

8:20 PM
I was considering taking Open University courses online.

one thing i've noticed that is kind of cool is smaller online-only universities that focus on some very specific topic - i noticed one focused on Tolkien, ancient languages/philology, and similar that was cool.
that was for a master's degree though, and it was as might be expected rather expensive to audit a course, if i remember right.

Yeah! You can become an expert in a tiny little field. That's harder (not impossible, though), in an IRL institution, I think.

10:20 PM
@Mithrandir Becoming an expert in a tiny little field is essentially what a PhD is (or should be) all about.
