Would it be unwise to give an artificer access to 'Heat Metal'?. 5E

1:26 AM
@Youjay Artificer spells are almost entirely non-combat. It probably wouldn't affect balance too much since Artificer's don't get access to 2nd level spells until 7th level, but it does adjust the flavor of the artificer a bit

okay fair enough

Ben
2:20 AM
Ok, So I think I've narrowed it down to Animal Soul, or Combat Caster, simply because I can't take Natural Spell yet (only level 3).
I looked at the Skinwalker, since there were no feats that had that racial requirement, and it does have two racial feats... are they different to normal feats?
...Do we get a feat at level 1? The question @DavidCoffron linked suggested one to be taken at first level, even though they started at level 3..?

2:58 AM
hey there @Viishnahn

3:14 AM
@Shalvenay Hey, what's up?

@Viishnahn not a whole lot, watching some stuff on Chinese home-grown (domestic) locks (of the mechanical flavor)

sounds neat

what's up on your end?

discussing campaigns with a friend
Got anything interesting brewing in any campaigns you're running or a part of?

@Viishnahn not yet so far....

3:26 AM
@Ben "that doesn't help me now as they're starting at level 3"

Ben
Ah
Misread

But everyone does get 1 feat at level 1

Q: Where is the table for determining how many feats a character has based on level in the Pathfinder Core Rulebook?

SandwichI've paged through my entire book, looked in the index, checked the sections on feats and ability scores, and I've not been able to find the table that breaks down when you get ability score increases, and feats. I already know that you get an ability score increase every 4th level so that's no...

8 hours later…
11:13 AM
I rise from the dead again!
Fear my neverending boredom as I am getting explained what I already know about photoshop hence I want to conversate with people over the internet!

Sup

Not much, very bored, what about you?
doing decent xP

At work, feeling a bit down on energy

Oof

I am tired approximately 150% of the time
ADULTHOOD amirite

11:26 AM
I've started associating afternoon coma with carb intake and I'm not sure whether it's just psychosomatic or real

Being an adult is pretty easy, you just feel tired all the time and tell people about how tired you are and they tell you how tired they are

11:47 AM
Tonight's dinner is onions and carrots sauteed with ginger and garlic, and kang kong fried with cornmeal.

@doppelspooker >doppelspooker
doot doot

12:06 PM
doot!
@BESW that sounds superb and I love that there's something called Kang Kong.

Actually I think it's usually all one word? But yeah.

@DavidCoffron Oooh, I like that one. Pact of the Radiant (Or Pact of the Radiating? Or pact of the Radiator?)
Is Kang Kong King Kong's cousin?
@Carcer I just looked at the Urban dictionary and found an entry for doot, Irish slang, that I am pretty sure nobody means when it is used here. But I am now, after having read through all of those entries, unsure what the heck a doot is.

12:32 PM
@KorvinStarmast if you're locally mystified "doot" is the sound that a skeleton makes when it plays a trumpet
like the one in doppelspooker's profile pic

OK, so a skeleton playing a trumpet makes a doot sound. onomatopoeia. Got it. I have already seen "up doot" for up vote from some others, but that didn't seem to fit what was going on up there. Also Rolling Stones, Heartbreaker-doodoodoodoodoodoo

@KorvinStarmast also then became a DOOM parody thing:
(you might recognise the doot skeleton in the middle)

@doppelspooker I never played Doom, so the reference is lost on me. (Image not found?)

oh wait that's the one Carcer linked! Ok, he's got the meme covered.
@KorvinStarmast oh, it's just, the title logo
DOOM -> DOOT
and a random skeleton that was on its cover art was photoshopped by somebody to have a trumpet
that's it :D

@doppelspooker Well, that's a jaunty little tune, to be sure. (From Carcer's link). Reminds me of that earworm "beep beep little satellite" from a few years back.

12:43 PM
knee deep in the doot is great
(the song's original non-doot version is titled Knee-Deep in the Dead)

I am pretty sure that without Autotune, that song isn't possible (beep beep ... and there's a German version by Blümchen

oh yeah, entirely synthesised

12:58 PM
"doot" is just a very popular memetic word now, both originally for the spoopy skeleton trumpet stuff and then because it got closely associated with new DOOM

1:15 PM
Nike: Just Doot.

@BESW perfection

@Carcer ohhhhhhhhhhh
@nitsua60 For some reason that whole question really bothers me (in reaction to the player's behavior). I am surprised nobody mentioned to watch out for this customized class.

1:44 PM
Got like a foot of snow last night :(

howdy howdy

ahoy

Sadly, I think my attempt to let my players help drive and develop and story is failing :(

How so?

1:56 PM
They aren't communicating with each other in-between sessions (with 1 out of 3 players trying to). They can still drive direction in-game, but I was asking for, but not receiving, feedback in between to help me write the next session.

@NautArch It is always kind of hard to arrange this among working adults even if the interest is there. Are you sure that they understood this was the expectation?

@Rubiksmoose Yeah, we had talked about it and they were excited for it. We also have (at least) 3 weeks between sessions - so there's definitely time.
But excited about the idea of it and actually doing it are two different things :)
I'm trying to tell them it's not a bad thing if they don't want to do it. I can put more of the story on rails - it's just a different play style.

@NautArch Hmmm yeah sounds like you did/are doing everything you can at least
I guess all you can do is talk with them and tell them how it is affecting you.

Yeah, i'll talk more at our next session about it and get everyone on the same page.

I've never tried to run D&D improvosationally and I don't think it would really work well lol
(though I was surprised at how well it worked in Masks. Both because I didn't think I would be good at all at it and because I had no idea it would be that fun/easy to do. I suspect me thinking that it is fun/easy/good at it is more a result of the system being well-designed for it and not personal skill.)

2:04 PM
@Rubiksmoose I do better with improvisation generally :) Before going into a session, I'll have 3-4 encounters that could happen - either in roleplay or combat, but I try and adjust things by what they characters do.

Though I'm not sure what part wouldn't work with D&D now that I think about it...

Good news, though: reached back out to the group and another player says he's going to get his stuff together and communicate more :)

@NautArch Yay! Communication for the win.

@NautArch That must be a relief. When all of the players are uncommunicative, GMing starts to become unfun, especially if you prep in between games

It can also begin to feel like people don't care (Even if that isn't the case)

2:07 PM
@MikeQ Yeah, that's been the hardest. I'm trying to have a world that reacts to the players and moves forward without them as well.

@Rubiksmoose My players have given me enough mixed signals that I think they just don't care, and so I've basically put my game on indefinite hiatus

@MikeQ :-/ that is unfortunate. But I guess better to kill off something that isn't working then to pump a bunch of effort and time into it that doesn't come to fruition.

@Rubiksmoose I mean, I spent at least 8 months (probably more) of work, including pulling many all-nighters, preparing material for this campaign

:'(

Yeah. It's a huge disappointment.

2:12 PM
That is really sad.
You can always keep it in you backpocket though and it is always possible to use some or all of the material in the future potentially.

Maybe. I don't know if I ever want to GM a pathfinder campaign again.

@MikeQ I know that feeling well...
Though depending on the nature of the story, some of that could be transferred to another system. But this is just me being optimistic here.

Some of it, perhaps. I know that my #1 mistake was overcomplicating the plot and using a setting with too many NPCs and locations.

yeah, 8 months of prep sounds like possibly overkill. Maybe you could write a fantasy epic instead

@Carcer 8 months is a low estimate. I had most of the campaign ready around this time last year, although I scrapped large chunks of it a few times.
Also I've apparently hijacked @NautArch 's conversation, sorry about that

2:24 PM
Does anyone remember that question/discussion we had a few months ago about a feature that seemed to only be granted to a character at 1st level (making multiclassed characters unable to gain it)

@MikeQ ha, no worries! 2/3 players just started communicating. Maybe I just needed to give them a little shove.

@NautArch You could try a compromise approach, where in between sessions you ask them to pick from some options, rather than a broad "what do yall want next session"

@NautArch Shoving is one of the DM's primary roles! XD

@MikeQ that's what I did. Presented the currently known storylines.

@DavidCoffron Hmmm nothing ringing a bell currently for me. Only about one feature?

2:26 PM
@Rubiksmoose yeah. It was worded weirdly IIRC

hmmm I'll take a poke at it.

@Rubiksmoose Do you know where else I can find play samples of Masks?
The system seems promising, although I don't understand it enough yet to run it

@MikeQ this is a good idea, broad questions are too tough :)

@kviiri "I'm voting to close this email as too broad"

@MikeQ Definitely. There are a surprising number of podcasts/real plays that use the system. I'll give you my top reccommendations.

2:35 PM
Keep flip flopping on my monk asi. Get 20 Dex or stay at 18 and bump Wis to 16 for a better stunning strike.
Leaning latter

Increasing DEX: +1 initiative, +1 attack/damage
Increasing WIS: +1 ki point, +1 ability DC
That's basically the tradeoff, right?

@MikeQ This is a short 4 episode mini-campaign based on the show Young Justice. It is actually run by the RPG's designer and he does a great job with it. However, Young Justice knowledge is recommended to understand some of the character interactions. There are a couple behind the scenes episodes (pre and post play) with the creator that also shed light on how the game is designed.

@MikeQ you get ki for wisdom? I thought it was just monk level

@DavidCoffron Whoops, wrong system. You are correct.

And skills are also a small factor. Better steal and acrobatics vs better perception and medicine

2:44 PM
@MikeQ This is a longer still-running podcast that is very good and starts pretty well (I've found all such podcasts usually have a bit of a rough start as people get into/figure out their characters). Funny and dramatic and they don't shy away from talking about the rules. They go over their character creation process pretty thoroughly in episode 0-1 and 0-2 and I think they cover some rules introductions. If you aren't interested in that, you can skip to episode1.

(Survival and sleight of hand too bit they come up less often in my experience)

@MikeQ Just the +1 ability DC. Ki points are determined by level, not WIS.

@NautArch what level? There are a couple breakpoints at some levels for save DCs (can't remember where I saw the analysis)

@DavidCoffron 5th level - but we use proficiency die.

@NautArch Yep, DavidCoffron pointed that out

2:46 PM
@NautArch oh then it might be different. Does prof die apply to save DCs too?

@DavidCoffron Yeah, so my DC is 8+WIS+D6

@MikeQ The third is worth a mention because it is complete, but covers the sme mechanical ground as my 2nd rec but IIRC starts off a bit clunkier (though it gets very good).Those are my top 2 really. They should give you a good feel for how the game plays.

@NautArch is probably value the +1 WIS more then. Guarantee at least a 10 DC so a 10 wis character (fairly common) has a 50% shot
(On a minimum d6 roll)
Makes using your ki to stun less risky

@DavidCoffron That's where i'm leaning as well. The STunning Strike is fun - i'd rather increase the odds of that working than the straight damage increase.

@NautArch such a great ability.

2:53 PM
Am back
How's it going bois?

@Rubiksmoose Yeah, and I'll probably do WIS against next ASI.

TIL the mutual exclusivity on the Monk/Barbarian Unarmored Defense feature extends entirely to the mere ability to gain the feature in the first place, not just to the ability to benefit from either.
Need to reconsider my Barbarian/Monk multiclass concept. =O

@Xirema Yeah I was not aware of this either. Or I think I had known it at one point and forgotten it completely.

@MikeQ wish people could do this
Also, meetings

@Xirema I don't know why WotC thought that was necessary bc usually you only have 1 high secondary ability so you will mostly use 1 or the other anyway.

2:59 PM
What are we talking about?

just an interruption, to whoever talked me about Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup... I've been doing the tutorials and I'm hooked with the silly thing, have it hidden in a tab in Chrome and do a few movements here and there while I work... Whoever you are, you are gonna cost me my job! /s

@DavidCoffron \shrug

@Helwar That was me. Have you seen the French psychological thriller film, Le Couperet?

@Ghiojo I mean... 2 5e convos rn. One's about how you only can have 1 unarmored defnlense featurw and one's about NautArch's character

Ooooo, speaking about the char

3:02 PM
@Ghiojo yup!

what's the situation? I tend to be horrible at min-maxing yet people think i'm actually good at it
So yeh

@Ghiojo Building a Kensei Monk for an upcoming campaign. Starting at 5th level, and debating about taking the ASI for 20 DEX or using it for 16 WIS (to increase chance of a successful stunning strike). Leaning the latter.

@Ghiojo Monk needs to decide between Wisdom or Dexterity for ASI. Using proficiency dice.

@Helwar Le Couperet is about a skilled paper engineer who gets laid off on favorable terms from his old plant. He thinks he'll find a new job with ease but doesn't. Eventually he snoops every applicant to one paper mill job he wants and resolves to make sure he gets the job by killing every other applicant.
@Helwar My ways of securing vacancies for myself are... a bit gentler ;)

I still want to one day do the Halfling WMS sorcerer that multiclasses into divination Wizard, gets the lucky feat and multiclasses into Rogue to get the bountiful luck.

3:04 PM
@trogdor this hnq might be to your interest:

Q: What does the Venom symbiote subsist on?

BroklyniteThe comics always seemed handwavey about this in my memory, saying that the symbiote was absorbing the life energy of its host or some such twaddle. Fine. But when Spider-Man (and then eventually Eddie Brock) bond with the symbiote, the symbiote does one interesting thing: it replicates the web...

@Ghiojo just to be lucky? I don't see much actual synergy

Ooof, if they were odd i'd definetly suggest a feat

@kviiri hahahahahha

Yeah, just because of all the lucky stuff

@doppelspooker Merchandise, probably.

3:05 PM
@BESW hah!

@Ghiojo Yeah, I'd consider SHarpshooter, but I'd rather get my scores up to increase my AC.

@NautArch you rolled stats right?

I own the dice

@NautArch Be bold, spend your ASI on charisma

@DavidCoffron Yeah, this is my character

3:06 PM
@Ghiojo one could say you're on a roll

@kviiri that was a dicey pun to make

@NautArch huh, do you use D&D beyond regularly?

I once made a character who is a Kenku called Darius Crowly, who is a plague doctors (Which the mask is called a Crow's beak Mask), has a crowbar and a crow's beak (Bec de corbin, a weapon, basically a warhammer). And has a bag adorned with a crow's skull.
And he's also a servant of the Raven Queen (Cause in Spanish the word for Crow and Raven is the same)

@Ghiojo sounds like a murderhobo

@Ghiojo and he liked dogs

3:08 PM
@BESW I get it :D

Not really, he is an Apothecary, he actually wishes to heal people because his family died to the plague.
Well, i'll brb later, got abus to catch

@NautArch Dex also affects deflect missiles. Something to consider (one of my favorite parts of Monk)

@DavidCoffron All monks want to be shoot when they get that. Then you get them a platoon of archers to fight and they complain!

@Helwar I want to get a shield of missle attraction on a Barbarian/Monk. All your arrows come to me

@Ghiojo (The "Murderhobo" comment was a pun - note the italics on murder, as in a murder of crows)

3:10 PM
@DavidCoffron Yeah, if that 1hp is gonna make a difference, then i'm in a bigger problem, though :)

Question: I've seen a few homebrew races here over the last few months that try to make a +3ASI possible for a single stat, and invariably, someone (occasionally me) will point out that +3 to a single stat is a bit overpowered. So my question is, what would a race need to have as notable downsides to make a +3ASI balanced?

@NautArch it's not the 1 HP. It's the chance to throw back mistakes that do 1 more damage

(is a question I would have submitted if it weren't grossly opinion-based/subjective/too broad)

@Helwar starting to more and more. BUt yeah, i use it for my source books now. Just bring my hardcover PHB to games. Part of me wishes I just bought the books, but now that I bought into dndbeyond, I'm not doing that.

@Ghiojo I think crows and ravens were generally considered two races of the same species until fairly recently. I know this because one of my best friends ever is a really enthusiastic birdwatcher and reading on their "separation" was that one time I was more up to date than him :>

3:12 PM
@Xirema this character can't have a starting Ability Score above 14
Hitting 18 at level 1 is SO strong

@NautArch i'm feeling meh about it. I don't want to pay twice for my books and I like phisically having them

That a one of the main reasons rolled characters are better

@DavidCoffron or +1 to hit. But that's the tradeoff, Do I want to increase my chances on my attacks and damage, or increase the chance my limited feature works better?

@Helwar I use it fairly regularly despite not really being the DnD type :> since I switched cellphones I have been too lazy to copy the pdfs

I see how it can be very useful though, but the price is too steep

3:13 PM
@Xirema I mean, as mentioned before downsides are not how 5e balances characters.

@DavidCoffron I feel like that's cheating a bit, but yeah, that would probably do it.

And arguably few downsides are ever really going to work

@NautArch put it in strength to bench 15 more lbs

I can't afford all the paper books right now, much less buying them twice T_T

@Helwar Did you sign up for access to my dndbeyond?

3:14 PM
@Xirema If they have a -1 to all the statistics that stat boosts it'd become underpowered, but technically closer to "balanced" :P (e.g. Dex +3 -> -1 AC, -1 attack and damage with finesse weapons, -1 Dex saves)

@DavidCoffron In my games is not that rare that someone rolls an 18, +2 per race, 20 starting stat

@Xirema the real answer is you put it as a racial feat. Elvish Accuracy can results in +3 DEX for elves for example

@NautArch I was in the beta, but haven't done much else

@Helwar which is ludicrously unbalanced compared to point buy

@Helwar @NautArch is talking about his personal account which can be shared with other people.

3:15 PM
@Helwar You want access to the chatizen 'campaign' i created? Lots of slots left. All current rulebooks are in.
no modules

@NautArch Oh, if you don't mind, it would be great. I would still need to buy everything if I wanted to share with my own party, I guess, but this is better than nothing

@Xirema fwiw, this question would not be POB

@NautArch have to create a character right now? can I just use one I had from the beta and change it later ? (i'm at work :P)

There's a lot of reasons to dislike copyright law but at least ours is remarkably permissive in that it permits making a few private copies of DnD books (or other works) for non-commercial use. "Private" includes family and limited circle of friends. It's pretty convenient when starting a DnD game since I can legally pass around a pdf based on a book I have.

3:19 PM
@Helwar I'm...not sure :)
I think you can assign a characgter you have to the campaign

I've assigned one that was in the account since the beta, I'll check it up later
thank you very much

@Helwar no worries. Might as well use the system to it's fullest :)

So has everyone been keeping up-to-date with Pathfinder 2nd edition? Some decent changes dropped last week, including all the multiclass templates

@Rubiksmoose Eh. I personally feel like it brushes up against being an Idea Generating topic. Maybe structured the right way it could constitute a good question.

@Delioth I have an intense irrational hate towards PF so, nope... Is there anything good though?

3:27 PM
@Helwar Oh yeah - Pathfinder 2 is way less crunchy than the first one

@Helwar is it really irrational?

Wait, are we going to lose a reason to throw "Mathfinder" jokes now? :(

@kviiri The feat tree charop task still involves graph theory, which is part of math

@kviiri Maybe "Pathfeater" can be the new joke

@MikeQ Incidentally it's my favorite part of math :3
Hamiltonian Pathfinder

3:29 PM
as I understand everything is feats now

@kviiri That is my favorite Broadway musical.

It seems to play a lot more like 5e, but with vastly more customization and choice. But it still removes a lot of the technical crunch that pathfinder 1e had (instead of dozens of types of bonuses and deep feat trees, there's exactly 3 types of bonuses and 2 types of penalties, and feat trees aren't deep)

@Carcer Yep. Because that's what PF needed. More feats.

@Helwar answer is yes
I did that

@Rubiksmoose You fooled me for a moment!

3:30 PM
@kviiri hahaha :)

"Featfinder" could still be a thing since you get at least 1 feat every level (ish)

@Carcer well, it is. While I enjoyed D&D4e for what it was, my group of friends kept groaning and saying it was terrible and we should jump to PF. PF was just D&D 3.75 to me, and I usually tend to end up hating things when I'm told that what I do like is bad and that other thing is what I should enjoy

There are general feats, racial feats, and class feats. Which means like... 14+ different lists?

despite its virtues or flaws. So, irrational. But not less real :P

@Helwar Hey! Pathfinder 2e is actually a decent middle-ground between 4e and pathfinder, your group might like it (if you're still with that group). Pathfinder nor 4e are actually bad, but pathfinder 2e might be worth looking at

3:32 PM
@Helwar Irrational, but not complex --- hence real.

@goodguy5 I feel like the "hotness" comment you just put on should probably wait. Until we know the system and information put up in the comments is going to be confusing more than helpful.

@MikeQ I mean, on the one hand I'm down for a more flexible system where you choose a bunch of qualities rather than just "you're a level 10 Whiffbanger so you've got the Supreme Bangwhiff ability"

@Rubiksmoose I mean.... it's related regardless

@Helwar I really hated 4e for the longest time, until I got some important things about gaming in general :>

@MikeQ Yeah - smaller lists is a good thing, and it means you don't have to take the pf 1e approach of using all your general feats on combat power or falling behind

3:33 PM
but then I don't see why you wouldn't take that to the logical conclusion and abandon level-based nonsense entirely

@goodguy5 kind of? I mean if this is a PbtA question 2e would not have anything to do with it.

pbta?

But it isn't the hugest deal.

@goodguy5 Powered by the Apocalypse

ah

3:34 PM
Powered by the Apocalypse, a category that a lot of systems fgall into.

Since there are nice delimitations, you get flavor and combat utility. Skill feats give you new uses for skills, general feats give you some nice flavor and character development, class feats give you more crunchy power, ancestry feats are somewhere between flavor and power but they're at least distinct.

In common parlance, the rough "engine" of Apocalypse World and similar games (although strictly speaking it's more of a "Inspired by Apocalypse World" license)

And the concept of a game having a hotness (comeliness) score has a precedent. Hence, the "loosely related", rather than "try this" or some other direct correlation

@goodguy5 The only thing is I worry since this person is clearly not aware of how tagging works would realize that the Q&A is for a different system even.

@kviiri I have played both, the rational part of me doesn't hate pathfinder, it's just D&D 3.75, and I like D&D 3.5 (as tired as I am of it). But I reaaaaaaaaally hate when I have to do things for peer pressure, and it's an everlasting hate. Can't get into The Witcher games for the same reason

3:35 PM
And Class feats can be exchanged for progressing a multiclass, archetype, or prestige dedication, which is probably one of the cooler parts of the system (being able to graft other classes or prestiges and such onto your own kit)

Then delete it

@goodguy5 I can't? Only mods or the poster can delete it.

well, I'm not doing it. if someone wants it deleted, they can

(One can flag it then it will auto delete after a certain amount of flags though)

I forgot that I'm not supposed to use comments or stars or most features because I don't understand them well enough here

3:37 PM
@goodguy5 Ok that's fine. It was just a friendly suggestion. Was not trying to force you to do anything.

also most of the reason I stopped hanging around

@goodguy5 I was wondering if that was why we hadn't seen you in a while :(

@goodguy5 Commenting is a sin! Repent!

@goodguy5 fwiw I don't think you did anything close to wrong here.
@Delioth This does sound pretty cool customization-wise.

It definitely is - multiclassing is mostly taking class feats and abilities from other classes using your own class feat slots, while continuing to gain your basic class abilities.

3:48 PM
@Delioth that is very cool

And similarly for archetypes of characters (the two given were Cavaliers and Pirates), or prestige classes (there's just one given, which is an extreme armor expert)

Reminds me a bit of hybrid classes from 4e

Included in the abilities you can gain from multiclassing is up to 8th level spells
For an investment of 4 class feats to get 1 per level (5 if you want 2 spells per level of up to 6th level spells)

@Delioth Does PF go up to 9th level like D&D?

PF2E now goes up to 10th level, with the "big ones" (Wish, Time Stop, Miracle) now being 10th level spells
And you have to use your 20th level class feat to gain access to 1 10th level slot and 1 10th level spell known/in spellbook

3:50 PM
@Delioth interesting

Which competes with stuff like "once per minute, add an action to a spell-cast of 5th level or lower to just not expend the slot"
Or "you don't have to add actions when using metamagic" (which is the only cost of using most metamagics)

Now those are capstone
Most 5e capstones disappoint me

@DavidCoffron I'm excited to hit my Vengeance pally capstone.

@NautArch paladin caps are ones that don't disappoint
They're flavorful, tactical, and powerful

@DavidCoffron Barbarian has ap retty nice one, too

3:55 PM
But 4 ki points per fight is lame

Though "add actions" makes my 5e head hurt.

@Rubiksmoose heads have different editions? Where do I update

@DavidCoffron hahaha kindly just deposit some money in my PayPal account and I'll send an OTA update straight along.

4:10 PM
@Delioth How many types of AC are there now?

@MikeQ Air conditioning, animal crossing, assassins creed

Do we still need to remember all 500 types of conditions?
Dazed, dazzled, stunned, staggered, blinded, nauseated, sickened, shaken, stirred, grappled, pinned, confused, puzzled, perplexed, bamboozled, fatigued, exhausted, asleep, diseased, poisoned, bleeding, frightened, miffed, scrambled, and with a side of fries

@MikeQ ... That's what Bilbo Baggins hates?

Boiled, mashed, stuck in a stew...

@MikeQ I see the questions already. Ways to be immune to gaining a side of fries
It's hurting my figure

4:15 PM
So apparently the Japanese Lieutenant Hiroo Onoda lived in the shrub in Philippines for almost 30 years after WWII ended without recognizing the fact.
I can't really appreciate going all Rambo on the people who just wanted to move on, but seriously, that there is dedication.

@kviiri A shrubbery?!

@kviiri Chose not to recognize or was uninformed?

@MikeQ I love how only 6 of those are made up.

@MikeQ PF campaign?

@kviiri Was he actively engaged in hostilities, or just camping out?

4:18 PM
@GreySage And it's not even a complete list (flatfooted, flanked but not flatfooted, prone, entangled, and the various levels of cover and visibility, and then there are the magical conditions)

@GreySage It looks like he knew about the surrender and continued to fight

@GreySage just camping

@SirCinnamon It's... a bit complicated I guess. He was truthfully told that Japan had been defeated fairly early on during his time in hiding (through a leaflet drop) but of course he couldn't be sure it wasn't just propaganda or a ruse.
@GreySage Mostly camping by what I know, but he did engage in shoot-outs with the local authorities early on during his stay.

@KorvinStarmast Yep, the pirate one that I've been asking about in chat for a while

@DavidCoffron It says on the Wikipedia page he was involved in some shoot-outs and sabotage (burning crops)

4:20 PM
@NautArch Aha, so your DM is doing what my maritime game DM is doing. 1dx for proficiency, not a fixed number. Neat. How is it working out so far?

@kviiri he was pardoned tho

@DavidCoffron Yeah

@kviiri yeah i guess ur right

@KorvinStarmast We use the DMG proficiency. D4->d6->d8->d10->d12 increasing whenever the standard proficiency increases.

"I became an officer and I received an order. If I could not carry it out, I would feel shame. I am very competitive,"

4:21 PM
We absolutely love it.

@KorvinStarmast I'm curious how that goes 75% of the time it's as good or better than flat prof

competetive
My guy, it's been 30 years

But that 1/4 probably sucks. Do monsters get the prof dice too?
(My percentages are based on the d4)

29 years is a fricken' long time to live in the jungle. I think I've been out in the woods for two weeks, tops? And even that felt like a lifetime despite having many civilized amenities like the radio and the sauna

I thought that in Finland, saunas grew on trees

4:24 PM
@MikeQ Planks and logs grow on trees and you have to build the sauna from them :(
I'm a no good builder too. My ancestors would be ashamed

@Helwar Only seen it twice in four years. Happened a few weeks ago in our maritime game; the player chose a Aracokra and bumped dex to 20. (His Cha is 6, tee hee)

@kviiri So literally the plot of Archer's season 6 first episode was real.

@Xirema Pretty much

@DavidCoffron We don't use the dice for mosnters becaus their to hit bonus is baked in
don't want to parse it apart

@NautArch then it probably makes the game a hair easier on average.

4:28 PM
@DavidCoffron not if you fight harder/more monsters :)

@DavidCoffron If my math is right, it effectively increases the players' proficiency by +0.5 , or a +2.5% success rate

@NautArch true. GM can definitely adjust

@Xirema The craziest part is that he wasn't the last soldier to surrender. Another soldier was found doing the same thing (but growing a farm) later that same year.

@MikeQ correct
@MikeQ it's kind of a 2.5% rate but proficiency does impact things other than d20 (albeit rarely)

The reason I was looking up Japanese stragglers was this hilarious Quora question: Are German U-Boats still trying to sink American merchant ships going to the UK or did that mostly end after WW2.

4:30 PM
@DavidCoffron I didn't notice anything different in our first battle when we were boarded by pirates. We hit some things, missed others.

Plus it allows for the chance to reach higher numbers on a high roll

@kviiri huh
hwah

@DavidCoffron Right, it translates to a +5% for anything with expertise, or +1.25% for jack of all trades

@DavidCoffron ...and lower numbers

@MikeQ The actual effect might be less straightforward though. In extreme cases, I think it can greatly increase the chance of "blundering" almost sure hits.

4:32 PM
@kviiri yes, yes it can. Bigger problem at higher levels when it's a 1d10 or 1d12

@kviiri I'm considering cases where you have d20+stuff versus d4/d6/d8/d10/d12 + stuff

@MikeQ or a +any% for hitting a 30 DC with a +4 ability at level 5

@MikeQ Ah, I thought the d4/d6/etc would replace the + stuff?

@kviiri e.g. NPC saving throw is d20+bonuses versus 8 + dX + player's casting ability modifier

It definitely changes my calculus a bit. I have a +3 glaive, so at this point I almost always take the -5 for GWM and deliver a LOT of damage regularly even with no smites that's about 30/hit (D10+d8+5+3+10) and I get 3-4 attacks/round.

4:36 PM
@NautArch who's going around hasting you?

@DavidCoffron 4-5 with haste. I get an attack, extra attack, bonus action attack with polearm master. Then I can try and pull a reaction from Sentinel/PolearmMaster/Vengeance Paladin.
But I have to haste myself. no other member has it.

@NautArch somehow I forgot about bonus action attack. I'm dumb

@DavidCoffron np - i've forgotten in game at times.
but being able to drop 100HP in one turn definitely makes life harder for the DM.

@Rubiksmoose very much so.

On the flipside, I've got "low" ac at 20 compared to my linemates and the DM has tailored monsters to hit their ac - so i have a problem with getting hurt if the fights drag on (which they do)

4:40 PM
@NautArch dungeons and drag on

@Delioth Oh Crud I didn't know that one

@SirCinnamon Supremely meme'd

@SirCinnamon I done joined the fight, but it seemed to drag on.

Why

There was this really cruddy and buggy Finnish top-down drag-racing game for Windows in the late 1990's or early 2000's, done by some hobbyist visual basic programmer

4:42 PM
Dungeons and Drag Races

feast your eyes on that interface

I remember a math based car racing game in grade school but the name escapes me

@SirCinnamon huh, math based racing does ring a bell

something akin to number munchers

I don't know about car racing, but I definitely remember one that involved piloting a space ship.
And shooting asteroids.
I think there was also a typing tutor version.

4:48 PM
Edugames! <3

Apparently I have a lot to thank the Minnesota Educational Computing Consortium for : en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MECC#Activities
Everyone always talks about oregon trail but The Yukon Trail was my jam (Maybe an age thing or a Canadian thing)

@SirCinnamon Oh man, I played so much Lemonade Stand on my graphing calculator.

@Yuuki Dinopark Tycoon! No wonder I love tycoon games to this day

@Yuuki What?? There were other graphing calculator games besides BlockDude?

@MikeQ Lemonade Stand was older than BlockDude.

4:54 PM
Hello @MaikoChikyu
how have ye been

There's a really odd jewel of old simulator games, Hidden Agenda. Mechanics-wise it's nothing really, basically "event chains" with some decisions. But it's a thought-out political game from the time where video games weren't really taken seriously even as toys.

@MikeQ @Ghiojo Sorry, I stepped out for a moment and have to again soon, I'll pop in again when I can actually answer questions

The player assumes the role of the Presidente of the Chimerican revolutionary tri-partisan junta which has overthrown the formerly US-backed dictator Farsante. Now they must start rebuilding the country and policy.

@kviiri reddit.com/r/gaming/comments/2hedvz/… this lead me to my answer: Turbo Math Facts
I dont know if thats the same one as you

I'm okay. What about you?
