@pullover123 have you tried just calling? That is synchronous communication while texting (and to a lesser extent IMing) is Asynchronous. Generally I find the idea of texting is that people can safely take as much time as they want to respond. — user19312 1 min ago

I disagree. Depending on the messenger of course, many archive messages in the thousands or practically infinitely. Some allow you to urgently @ someone. And if someone is busy, why would they even check their messages? A simple "I'm busy, contact me later" would suffice without being too distracting. If it's distracting, they shouldn't be accessing their IM apps in the first place. If they thought it was truly urgent, no one would GroupMe or FB an urgent message. They would call or text. IMs and emails are totally different with email not being seen as instant in terms of short communciation. — Greg 11 secs ago

Not an answer, but an important note: if what he's doing is illegal, and you know this, and you keep renting from him, you're complicit in his crimes and might face fines and/or prison if it ever comes out. — Erik 20 secs ago

Don't forget that if he is still holding out hope for a romantic relationship with you, it's the relationship between you and your friend that's not healthy for him (and the physical intimacy between the two of you only sends mixed signals as long as your intentions aren't aligned). In such a case, not talking to you may be an action meant to take some distance from you (whether or not the friend inspired such action). Now, I'm not saying this is how it is, but it is important to realize there are other perspectives... — Jasper 32 secs ago

Upvote for the "people may not have time to answer" part. It happens to me all the time : I see a message I want to elaborate an answer to, or I want to check something before answering, or simply when I'm driving, then I plan on answering later on and totally forget about the initial message... Anyway the point is you can't expect an immediate answer because many different reasons. — Laurent S. 1 min ago

A passage of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's book Americanah comes to mind : Ginika and Ifemelu buy some cloth. The manager ask them which seller has been helping them but they don't remember the name. After a few useless questions ("does she has ong hair ? - but they both have long hair!) the manager just renounces identifying the seller ("I'll just ask them later"). (...) — Evargalo 1 min ago

Not a full answer, but I think it is highly beneficial for both of us to live together, I just want to reach a better price is a very good mindset to lead with and, actually, a good opening gambit. — rath 25 secs ago

I agree with the answer and that you have to set boundaries. I advise being "friendly", but don't become best friends with your landlord. The man acts as your landlord and charges you rent. Friends don't charge friends excessive rent, especially if they change the conditions and don't proactively factor you into it for your benefit. In other words, friends are supposed to look out for the well-being of fellow friends. There is also the friend versus landlord relationship. Friends and money don't mix well, and finances and unpaid debts tend to ruin many friendships. — Zorkolot 30 secs ago

-1 for the 4th bullet point - a lie like that is a really bad idea, if he turns around and calls the bluff it would not work out well for the OP. — motosubatsu 27 secs ago

@gnasher729 I see one big issue with that though. At that point, she would want split use of the car, and if she argued that, I would agree with her. Money is nice but it's not a priority hence why I allowed this arrangement in the first place without compensation. It's the disrespect without monetary compensation that I can't stand. If she paid but was late, that's a whole other story. — Greg 24 secs ago

@OldPadawan You tottally got my situation and mindset. As how things to be in this town, even taking into account he is overcharging, the price is still somehow competitive in the market outside student accomodations. "Therefore, involving laws or anything above the level of a quiet discussion that could lead to a gentlemen agreement, with "equal" (if possible) benefits for both sides, is risky IMO." I think this is a fair point, Im not gonna push that much for a cheap price but I do think I have some arguments. — h3h325 1 min ago

@jmoreno - this is the right answer. Not every "how do I ...." deserves support, but rather, a "You don't". OP has no right to the view of empty seats in front of him. The theater manger might not even want to be bothered, once the lights dim. — JoeTaxpayer 38 secs ago
