First

@Daminark you win

:D

8:02 PM
One isn't even prime

@Daminark Is this a youtube comments section?

"Local Fields Youtube comments section"

@AlessandroCodenotti who's reading Milne's notes in 2018?

ok so wat is a field

@ÍgjøgnumMeg Have you ever been to a farm?

8:03 PM
@Alessandro n0

room topic changed to Local Fields youtube comment section: (no tags)

lel
So
how do we wanna do this?
if I come back in a week and you guys are all experts I'll top myself

room mode changed to Gallery: anyone may enter, but only approved users can talk
This is probably unnecessary at this point since in recent times there haven't been people who just screw things up

room topic changed to Local Fields Reading Group: a reading group for chapter 7 of Milne's ANT notes, see jmilne.org/math/CourseNotes/ant.html [algebraic-number-theory] [number-theory]

But it makes you feel powerful

8:06 PM
Igj gets it

It's probably worth reading the paragraph "Discrete valuations" on page 54-55 as well before ch7 if you're not familiar with them (I'm not)

Also I don't think there's anything topological enough in this chapter to hinder me too much

as long as you know definitions?

hey @Pig

Pig
8:08 PM
hi @MatheinBoulomenos
just saw this in the Math room lol, am interested too :P

Yeah, there's not a lot to read, but I was pointing out where the definitions are

But yeah I guess we can just kinda read through and talk things out, maybe if Milne skips something or there's something unclear

@Pig I figured

@Daminark I was thinking more.. pick a page, read up to that page and convene periodically to discuss

Hmm, yeah that's probably a good plan

8:10 PM
That way, there's a goal to aim for each week (for example)

How does.. end of page 111 sound to start? Or is that not ambitious enough?

Pig
what's the timeframe?
one week from now?

@Pig I guess so, it's a democratic process though so it'd be cool to hear from others

Pig
cool - just wanted to clarify about that; that sounds good to me

8:15 PM
Of course, everyone has their own pace

That's not particularly ambitious, though given that I have the GRE on Saturday I won't complain too much about that fact
(Or at least I think it's not too ambitious, though maybe Milne takes a hint from Neukirch)

Fair, what about @Alessandro ?
We could also go to the middle of page 118 (just before the section on Newton's Lemma)
the section on completions is just first year analysis with a different metrics and fields I guess

I think we could go to the middle of page 113, so until page 111 as @ÍgjøgnumMeg suggested and then the short section on the "The weak approximation theorem", so that we can start with completions next time which seems to be a pretty important thing for local fields

A fine suggestion!

I'm travelling to Scotland on Wednesday and staying there for a week so I'm also fine with a non overly ambitious objective to begin with

8:21 PM
That's cool, so... do we wanna go up to the end of weak approximation theorem by next sunday?

Sounds good to me
And in the meantime we discuss doubts and questions here

@Pig @Daminark how's that sound?
Yeah cool

Yup

Cool :)

If you find stuff from previous chapters you don't know just ask here @Dami but I think it's self contained at least until page 113

8:28 PM
Awesome, and thanks, will do!

Pig
sounds good to me, thanks for organizing!

Cool!

Well now this looks familiar
