BREAKING: President Trump is nominating federal appeals court Judge Brett Kavanaugh as next US Supreme Court justice - @PeteWilliamsNBC
http://NBCNews.com
Kethledge at least seemingly thought asset forfeiture was theft. Sigh
lol @ the "Aren't you happy now #NeverTrumpers?" takes as if Trump's unhinged sociooathy on top of the usual Republican agenda was somehow a necessity for beating Clinton and Kennedy deciding to retire
BREAKING: A judge has rejected the Trump administration's bid to change a 1997 settlement that limits how long kids can be held in immigration detention — getting that settlement changed was a central part of Trump's executive order last month https://www.buzzfeed.com/zoetillman/trump-immigration-family-separation-court-flores-reject?utm_term=.prO7oN6Rn#.qoxo1Jaey
.@NRA statement: "We will be activating our members and tens of millions of supporters throughout the country in support of Judge Kavanaugh."
Points to Kavanaugh's "strong dissenting opinion in opposition to Washington, D.C.’s ban on commonly owned semi-automatic firearms."
The nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to be the next Supreme Court justice is President Trump’s finest hour, his classiest move https://nyti.ms/2MZWxhU
> So I propose that the Democrats offer the following compromise: Each Senate Democrat will pledge either to vote yes for Judge Kavanaugh’s confirmation — or, if voting no, to first publicly name at least two clearly better candidates whom a Republican president might realistically have nominated instead (not an easy task). In exchange for this act of good will, Democrats will insist that Judge Kavanaugh answer all fair questions at his confirmation hearing.
The president is going to sign that shit on August 12 because we live in hell
Portland basically has monthly street brawls sponsored by Patriot prayer just actively attacking people but good forbid somebody yell while wearing a mask
Oh hey, amazon workers in Spain have called for a transnational strike today. They're asking people to avoid Amazon.com, .ca etc, Twitch.tv, and other Amazon subsidiaries today in solidarity
I thought he'd get too distracted to go through with that but no, here we are
Source familiar tells NBC that Justice Kennedy had been in negotiations with the Trump team for months over Kennedy’s replacement. Once Kennedy received assurances that it would be Kavanaugh (his former law clerk) Kennedy felt comfortable retiring - @LACaldwellDC & @frankthorp
@TimStone so all this rose bullshit for a thing already decided months ago? i really hope kavanaugh gets stomped in the senate from the bush era email trove
> "Who is accountable? I am," she said. "I am accountable as a mayor — for existing policies procedures training hiring practices and more. It’s on me."
It's just absurd that we're pretending the officer is too dumb to use good judgment unless the policy specifically requires it but also responsible enough to hold a weapon and be able to arrest people
Todd Tomko, Marine colonel who White House CoS John Kelly vouched for after he was charged with sexual harassment, plead guilty to 3 counts of assault and battery and was sentenced to 18 months in jail in child sexual abuse case.
@TimStone he agreed to work in this administration, so...
also why it is a good practice to believe victims
Some realities for Remainers, a thread.
First, UK will leave EU by automatic operation of law on 29 March 2019. Nothing more needs to be done. It does not need to be "delivered" (like a pizza). It will happen.
There are three possible exceptions to this. None seem likely.
1.
ICE said in a statement that Ovidio Batres Morales “requested to be returned to Guatemala without his family member.”
Ovidio said he doesn’t remember agreeing to leave without his daughter. But he also said he isn't sure what documents he signed. Because he can't read or write. https://twitter.com/mattdpearce/status/1016726763425095680
Pres. Trump says his meeting with Vladimir Putin may be the easiest meeting of his upcoming trip to Europe.
“I have NATO, I have the U.K., which is in somewhat turmoil, and I have Putin. Frankly, Putin may be the easiest of them all." https://abcn.ws/2zsa5Rb https://t.co/2d0QBDaZhV
I mean to be entirely fair that there were giant chess pieces on the roof does not really clear anything up
Today is entirely too stupid / it's definitely going to just be Hannity with a voice modulator
Why am I not surprised: "...voting machine vendors unhappy with the publicity [from last year's hackathon] about hacked equipment threw up hurdles..." https://www.politico.com/newsletters/morning-cybersecurity/2018/07/10/def-con-voting-village-grows-this-year-274776
@TimStone "Let's see, should we spend our resources fixing the security flaws in our voting machines or preventing people from uncovering the security flaws?"
> FBI agent who accidentally shot man while doing backflip allowed to carry gun again
The order was amended to state that he may use his gun solely in accordance with FBI policy which uhhhh him violating I think was the whole problem to begin with?
I’ve deleted this tweet because it incorrectly implies a transactional nature in Kennedy’s replacement. I am told by a source who was not directly part of the talks that Kennedy provided Pres. Trump/ WH a list of acceptable replacements. (1/2)
According to the government's latest filing, for the one kid under five where they don't know where the parent is, they say "records show the parent and child might be U.S. citizens" — no other info provided https://assets.documentcloud.org/documents/4593359/7-10-18-US-Notice-of-Compliance-Ms-L.pdf
So children were separated from their parents because of a thin "human trafficking" guise. Can we just separate everyone from ICE because they're actually trafficking people?
ICE treating real citizens like trash is not news sadly
Been going on for ages...
Did we do this yet?
bad news guys, your shitty fox news watching uncle just wrote a bill that criminalizes halloween

Wild. Flynn and his son are going into business with Nick Muzin and Joey Allaham, who lobbyied for Qatar until last month https://twitter.com/bykowicz/status/1016745516816879616
@TimStone I think there was a study somewhere that showed firefighters have a higher predisposition towards pyromania and arson than the general population.
Bill Shine's WH appointment has caused stress and paranoia within the executive ranks at Fox News, and it has highlighted Sean Hannity's increasing isolation from network management https://www.buzzfeed.com/stevenperlberg/bill-shine-white-house-fox-news-sean-hannity
Oh, going back to Elon Musk and the Yellow Submarine. Apparently, the sub was deemed "not practical for this case", not that it was not practical at all.
@GodEmperorDune That and the weather conditions didn't really make the sub necessary.
IIRC, it hasn't rained that much in recent days despite being monsoon season (and why it was considered a dire situation) and so the water levels weren't high enough to need the sub.
If Musk really wants to be a hero, he can pay for Flint's new pipes. Literally all he has to do is give money to the people who know what they're doing.
But that's no fun.
I think still the wildest dive rescue I've seen was divers on a recent (but not too recent, within some weeks) shipwreck; I think they were on a recovery mission, but a survivor grabbed at a diver from an air pocket
@Yuuki its not about whether she's good or not, it's that there are so few roles cast as trans people, so a biopic of an actual trans person would be an excellent role to actually give to a trans person
Just got out of the first day of Operation Streamline in San Diego — court is still in session, but here are some quick notes on it so far.
a) 41 people were brought to court today straight from border patrol stations where they were held all weekend.
It's a hard tightrope to walk, imo. On the one hand, you want authenticity and also to expand diversity in Hollywood. On the other hand, if you want to raise attention to an issue through a movie, having star power is pretty much the easiest and probably most guaranteed way to do it.
Granted, star power isn't really a thing these days.
Okay so this straws nonsense needs to stop, however as absurd as the article is The Hill's image person has swayed me with this creepy floating baby doll:
"Straws suck: We need to break society free from plastics" http://hill.cm/miIEuHq
@GodEmperorDune I am 100% not saying this was the case, but I would hate to be the PR for the movie that tried to do it this way but couldn't find a competent actor.
@GodEmperorDune So pardon my complete ignorance, but that implies that the gender that a trans person is transitioning to is their correct gender?
Without touching on the extremely problematic situation that is diversity in Hollywood, acting itself is a thorny issue simply because the entirety of the job is pretending or, from some viewpoints, becoming someone else.
@Yuuki sure, but from what i've read, a lot of the anger in the trans community is that they are not being portrayed accurately because it is other people coming in and trying to do a shallow approximation without understanding the nuances of actually being trans
On a somewhat related note, A Quiet Place directed by John Krasinski (yes, of The Office fame) stars a deaf actress playing a deaf character.
And he really pushed hard for her to be cast in the part.
> Krasinski said he sought a deaf actress, "... for many reasons, I didn't want a non-deaf actress pretending to be deaf. Most importantly though, because a deaf actress would help my knowledge and my understanding of the situations tenfold. I wanted someone who lives it and who could teach me about it on set."
