This is surreal. There was basically no traffic on the road. There's no one in the office but cleaning/admin staff. Where the hell is everyone?
I feel like I'm forgetting some kind of national holiday or something...

morning @Lilienthal .. there was slightly less than average traffic for me too
not that I'm complaining mind you

@Lilienthal Closing as duplicate. :P

Or just go to the office, and if no one is there you can say "Well, seems that it is a Holiday" lol

7:10 AM
Hah ;)
Seems like Summer hit hard all of a sudden then. :)

It's been roasting the last couple of weeks here (well by UK standards anyway)

Most of my colleagues are probably nursing hangovers this morning. So it should be quiet.

7:28 AM
@Snow yep.. come to think of it that probably explains why traffic was a bit lighter this morning

Seems that there's some Holiday here as well, nobody's here lol.

mah?
Is that topic verboten in here?
sorry if I trampled over any toes

@Magisch You can appreciate the irony. :)

I meant what I wrote before more in a tongue & cheek kind of way anyways
But I can see how it could be misconstrued so no hard feelings

@Linkx_lair I just saw the question you posted on the main site.. not sure it's going to stay open as it's a) really broad and b) doesn't really have a goal we can address. Might be better discussed in here if you're about?

sure i guess
I mean i was just trying to gleam like some red flags about managers or such other devs & engineers see when they interview for positions-

@Magisch You should probably post that feedback on the meta post. FWIW, I don't see anything wrong with the content of your comment by itself. It was just that it was in continuation of a certain discussion, and we have seen where that conversation usually leads to, so it was nipped in the bud.

happy 4th everyone - who is in the US :)
@motosubatsu what are some red flags in your experience of like bad managers or projects?

@Linkx_lair One HUGE red flag I saw early in my career: my manager didn't remember he was my manager, and took a good 3 minutes to realise it.

@Linkx_lair most of the things I hate in a manger only really become evident once you're actually working there - stuff like micromanagement, selective hearing, lack of flexibility etc
you can get an idea of some of those things at interview "what's your management style?" is a good one

12:47 PM
How much of your working day is spent talking to your team? is one question I find useful, especially with good followup questions.

@MaskedMan I already have 3 answers on that post

@Magisch Nice. I didn't read through all the answers. I should probably post one of my own as well.

1:06 PM
i see- thank you @MaskedMan and @motosubatsu

1:19 PM
@Linkx_lair from the one you mentioned in the question you posted you might prefer them to not be the sort that spends too long talking with the team if their voice was really that annoying!

lol
yeah it was probably a combination of his accent and his like round-about vagueness and inability to communicate points in a clear concise fashion

@Linkx_lair the latter two points would probably be warning signs for me in a manager as well
I like my managers to be really clear about what they want

I like my managers to be out of the office.

@Snow lol that's good too
the dream is one who comes in.. gives me a really clear goal for what they want and then disappears out of the office leaving me free to do whatever I think best to achieve that goal

haha snow-
yeah true moto- i like that too. Alas many of my managers are not that clear- so i have to settle for second best- and make do with one that communicates well, often, and openly

Hello all

2:23 PM
Good afternoon Nofel.

3:39 PM
Hello @Nofel
@Snow My manager is also out currently lol

My manager is always "out". I see him once every 3 months or so.

huh, woke up to a +200 on screen :D

Question to our respected mods: When you clean up comments under answers, is there a way not to delete them all?
And, perhaps, leave the ones that had validity, or that warned user from continuing to discuss or comment for other purposes than the ones permitted.
I've sometimes reminded users to stop engaging, and politely point them to chat... but when the cleaning comes, it takes away that comment also, and then future users don't see what happened, nor the warning, and start again a wave of unnecessary comments.

4:27 PM
@DarkCygnus In case of extended bickering, I generally delete the whole set. I usually also undelete the useful comments, but if the comment count has gone over 20 or so, that becomes tiring, and some useful comments might get deleted in the crossfire.
I prefer moving the first batch of comments to chat, unless there is undesirable arguments going on there. We don't have the option to move to chat more than once, so further comments are usually just deleted.
The comment reminding people to disengage from conflict is certainly well-intentioned, but it is also technically noise. We cannot keep pasting that comment on every post, and users should know that anyway without reminders.
Additionally, if a comment is flagged, I almost always go to the post to figure out what is going on there, and delete/move all unnecessary comments, not just the ones that are flagged.

4:48 PM
I guess is part of the mess HNQ brings along
noise

4:58 PM
Yeah, I tend to closely watch HNQ. There's usually several rounds of troublesome comments.
The feature request for a comment only lock/protection would be helpful there, but apparently SE has other ideas/priorities.
Their whole point of HNQ is to drive more traffic to the sites, and more traffic = more moolah, so I can expect that comment lock feature will never actually be implemented.
Anyway, if you see multiple rounds of troublesome comments, please continue flagging them. Writing a note asking people to disengage from conflict is also encouraged. However, it would be helpful (to me at least) if that comment can be made somewhat distinguishable, such as starting it with a bold Note or something.

Q: How to sabotage and do harm to a colleague ( software )

IKnowIamPettyDisclaimer: Yes, I am petty and immoral. You don't need to point that out, I am aware of my character flaws. I don't care. I am a software developer. I have a colleague that is also a software developer. I dislike this colleague very much. He is the overachiever type. He micromanages, corrects ...

WTH!

I get pulled in to this Se ll the time reading about the shenanigans of the workforce. Reading the ones about tech jobs are painful, because it might as well be a fantasy, but it wasn't supposed to be. I've had a miserable experience looking for tech work (ie not really finding it) and obviously need some advice. Going through college, advisors were rotated through, and the career counselor was the opposite of tech-savvy. How do I fix this situation?

hey @YetAnotherRandomUser
I didn't quite get that

I'm not making bad money, but it's not great. That's a sticking factor when I come on here and hear about salaries. The other thing that bothers me is that, for lack fo a better term, I can't "use my big words" with most people in the industry I work with.

Q: What should we do with the Sabotage my Colleague question?

DarkCygnusRecently, this question was asked: How to sabotage and do harm to a colleague ( software ) Which basically asks: I am looking for ideas, how to sabotage this coworker. What are the best ways to sabotage a programmer? What should we do with this question? Asking for this is obviously...

Q: How to coexist in an environment where you expect to talk only about jokes or work?

dawnI just understood why I can't feel okai. I just don't want to joke all the time, and I only talk work on work time. How am I supposed to survive?

Oof. Reckon this can be salvaged?

8:36 PM
lets see
@Lilienthal without more juice from OP I fear we can't
Who came up with this rule? Why OP feels he should only joke or talk about work?

8:58 PM
@DarkCygnus OP replied but his edit didn't improve much. Problem indeed is that we're not psychic and don't know his workplace or behaviour.

yeah... not the best edit it seems
