Scoop: Two of the most visible members of the Trump White House are planning their departures — Sarah Huckabee Sanders and Raj Shah: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/sarah-sanders-raj-shah-planning-to-depart-the-white-house/
Hmm a bit different than the Kelly/Sanders combo floated earlier, but this time with article

lmao
are we going to get Spicer back

starts the drum roll Mooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooch
Seems only fitting for him to come back for absolutely no reason

ahahahahaha

@TimStone has Sanders said why she's leaving?
skimming though the article doesn't show anything

They didn't respond to questions about it

12:13 AM
@TimStone hmmmmm, a part of me kinda wants to hope that Sanders has gotten tied of the lies and decided to quit over it

oh no it's happening isn't it

I'm giving it 50/50 right now

Queensland transgender identity laws pass http://bit.ly/2LQd4V9

Trump on why he wants Russia back in G7: "If Putin were sitting next to me & we were having dinner, I could say, 'would you do me a favor? Would you get out of Syria? Would you get out of Ukraine? Just come on.'... I could ask him to do things that are good for the world." https://t.co/eBd2flJ3r9
lmao, "Come on, my buddy, my guy, just get out of Ukraine, okay? Do it for your pal Trump"

12:21 AM
the sort of it. Queensland married couples no longer have to get a divorce if ones has a Gender Change to be legally recognized as that gender

But hey I will award points for calling it Ukraine and not the Ukraine
That's pretty good news/weird yet not surprising that was a thing to begin with

@TimStone Putin: i'd be happy to look into it, but first could you pardon my spies before that Mueller finds out why they were in your Campaign team during the election

So I went to a Walmart in a politically divided North Carolina city and asked people what they thought of Trump attacking Canada and Trudeau. It was interesting: https://www.thestar.com/news/world/2018/06/08/talking-to-americans-about-trumps-attacks-on-canada.html

@TimStone assuming you're talking about the SBS tweet likewise, however not sure who the other 2 states are or what the other states are like in regards to this

Yep

12:30 AM
@TimStone i've been wondering since i saw the number but what is that 270% about? is that like how much extra the US has to pay to send milk to Canada?

Yeah, Canada imposes mid-200% tariffs on a range of dairy products, a situation that might seem unfair but has otherwise been consistent for decades
In reality though we just cheated by creating a whole new type of dairy product that can be used to make the normal products and isn't impacted by those tariffs so we actually have a dairy product surplus with Canada
Plus like, we trade a lot of different things with Canada, so focusing on any one thing is kind of silly to begin with. The Canadians also subsidize their milk production, I think, so all in all they aren't making out too great anyway, and are mostly just propping up their dairy industry

12:46 AM
lmfao
Oh wow https://t.co/sRcI3uI4Uw
cc @fredley

user15026
@TimStone I read a really good thread that explained the dairy thing the other night but of course now I can't find it

Boo :(
But yeah, the short of it is that Trump actually isn't lying for once, oddly enough, he just doesn't understand at all because he's not interested in anything but the talking point
Nothing in international politics is as simple as a single number, who knew? 🤷

Trigger warning: (#Grenfell) "Wake up, your phone keeps buzzing." 14th of June, 2017. 3:39 AM I sat up, I was not on call, I looked at my phone. Two missed calls and a text from NHS-NoReply I dialed the given number and punched in the code, rubbing my eyes.
Thread. One year ago
Please heed the warning
It's good but bad

1:31 AM
@Yuuki Please don't do this. We really don't want non-mods, even if their trusted room owners, to start putting in new chat rules (even if it was first mentioned by another mod). It would just get messy.
Pretty sure that rule is going to be a thing, for all the reasons, but yeah.

1:55 AM

@Wipqozn Sorry, I thought there was sufficient consensus that we should implement this rule and I see that I overstepped my boundaries.

Well that's never getting a title
> Canada's Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland ventured Wednesday onto President Donald Trump's home turf, denouncing his "absurd" tariffs and forcefully arguing for preservation of the world's rules-based order — with or without the United States.

I love this meme

1:09 PM
Apparently a GOP congressman posted nazi propaganda on Twitter. And Trump is allegedly considering allowing for construction of concentration camps for immigrant children being taken from their parents. What the fuck happened to this country?
AND HOW DOES MY FAMILY NOT REALIZE THIS IS BAD

@Fluttershy I think the answer to that question also answers the first

@Wipqozn well played, turtle... Well played.

1:59 PM
How do I get links to expand into previews when posted here?

Depends on where you're linking from. Twitter links often come with a ?s= at the end that you need to remove.
IIRC, chat one-boxes (previews) Twitter, YouTube, Amazon, Wikipedia, image links (.jpg, .png) and probably some other things.

Here's the president of the United States saluting a uniformed officer of the Korean People's Army, dutifully captured on tape by a Korean Central Television cameraman for broadcast in North Korea. #TrumpKim https://t.co/crBTx5e5cL

@Yuuki aah, but it doesn't preview arbitrary websites, just a few specific things?

Yeah.

2:09 PM
Imagine if Obama was caught doing that.

That might explain it, I posted a link last night and it didn't expand and I thought I had done something wrong.

yeah it's not as sophisticated as Discord's

@fredley IIRC, there was a whole hubbub about Obama either not saluting a US soldier or doing so while holding a bunch of stuff.
Was front page news for like five days on Fox.

wait, how are you able to see the oneboxes if you're on IRC :thonk:

@Memor-X Norwegian lawmakers, wake up and smell the South Korean president doing everything

2:11 PM
@fredley Obama was caught eating a fancy mustard and was accused of hating America

@puzzlepiece87 A more cynical part of me wonders if this is an exercise in "look at how unbiased we are!".

@quartata sometimes I use the web client, and I was doing so this time!
Also, IRC formats the oneboxes differently
If stuff doesn't expand I just get the link, if it does it makes an attempt at rendering the actual content in text

@Wipqozn Trump has him beat there, he only eats American Quarter McPounders

(it's not always a good attempt, but it tries)

now if he was, say, caught eating beets then obviously hed be a Russian shill
@ToxicFrog that's probably pretty annoying for the SE post oneboxes then, lots of HTML in those

2:14 PM
@quartata e.g. here's how tweets show up: ix.io/1dlb
@quartata oh, I muted those client-side like an hour after I first connected
Not so much because they contain a lot of HTML as because each one is half a page long

hey the tweets actually look pretty good

There's room for improvement, I think -- the profile image is useless (but removing that would require tweet-specific code rather than the generic html demongler it's using now), and there's a space missing between "by" and the username, and some extra whitespace at the start.
But in general I'm pretty happy with it, yeah.

@Yuuki Holding a cup of coffee.

@TimStone To Trump from puzzlepiece87: You can already try this approach but you know that you inveterate liar. Being a G member has absolutely nothing to do with it.

@fredley jfc I almost spit out my coffee

2:21 PM
@puzzlepiece87 haha Trump thinks his relationship with Putin is two-way/quid pro quo.
That would be cute, I guess, if it wasn't so horrifying.

@Wipqozn I don't understand. What is the process you will take the rule proposal through instead?

@Unionhawk correction: he has been arrested, but not for destruction of property. He was arrested for assaulting a latinx advocate and stealing his phone while it was streaming

2:36 PM
@Unionhawk yass

@puzzlepiece87 Talk to the other mods about it. There's no real process for introducing new chat rules. We put them in place when we feel there's a need for it, like when we created this room.

There is also the question of what we do with chat rules. At this point, none of our rules are really "don't do this", they're more "please avoid this but whatever".
Which is currently fine because right now, the rules we have (avoid memes, stars for news articles) aren't really contentious things.
We've never had big arguments just because someone decided to break a rule, intentionally or not.

also where do we keep the rules because pinned links fall off periodically

@Yuuki That's, not true lol
there's all kinds of meta discussion

2:51 PM
@Unionhawk Technically, what happened yesterday wasn't the result of rule breaking.

Especially with the fact that the conversation that went on yesterday has happened many times before and a mod had to mute the room for 5 minutes this time, I'd mildly prefer there be actual consequences because I have 0% confidence that same thing won't happen again in a few months as has been the existing pattern.

consequences should be same as breaking chat rules in other rooms

I mean honestly at this point such a specific callout would be redundant to a no trolling

@GodEmperorDune there's really not enough room or arqade specific rules that's it ever been a problem really. But a meta with a collection would make the most sense. I think other sites have done it

mod delete the offending thing and boot the user if they get unruly
(i mean start with gentle reminder so the user can self delete the messages)

2:53 PM
@GodEmperorDune Everyone here is too nice to actually do that if it's discretionary, in my opinion.
I mean, the conversation yesterday (which again, was largely just a rehash) went on for many hours.

@puzzlepiece87 we're well aware of the issue and are discussing it.

@Wipqozn Great, good luck with your discussion. Thanks for putting in the time and effort.

@puzzlepiece87 regular users don't have those powers, only mods

Today was probably the worst case of problems in this chat in a while
Err yesterday
@GodEmperorDune room owners can kick

this is also an opt-in room, some mods are not in chat, other mods don't necessarily frequent here if they don't want the news/politics discussion
@Wipqozn and the person can rejoin the room 5 seconds later

2:56 PM
@Wipqozn Judging by yesterday, it's a thing that ROs technically can do but it seems off-limits in this room.

Underwood also asks that Trump be banned from leading any other New York nonprofit for 10 years — seeking to apply a penalty usually reserved for the operators of small-time charity frauds to the president of the United States. https://twitter.com/mateagold/status/1007271620505931778

@GodEmperorDune no it's a 60 second penalty
or something like that
ramping up

@TimStone Additionally for Ivanka, Don Jr, & Eric

@Unionhawk we used to kick in bridge for funsies, it didn't seem that long to me

@GodEmperorDune Kicking is 60 seconds, then keeps ramping up

2:56 PM
It presents them a screen like "hey, maybe you're being a jerk here, rethink your life real quick"
@GodEmperorDune The functionality changed

@GodEmperorDune The ramping is based on how long it was since your last kick.

@Unionhawk Probably because people were getting kicked for funsies.

@Yuuki And because the functionality was useless

@GodEmperorDune Oh, well in that case, in my own opinion, I'm guessing the problem will probably continue recurring then unless we have a specific rule that is instituted. Mods always pleasantly surprise me with how informed they are, but I think it would be beyond even their fantastic presence to expect them to know "Hey, this isn't just an isolated disagreement, this member does this exact same thing every few months."

2:58 PM
@Yuuki It's not, but there was a lot of stuff going on yesterday and high emotions, so the way that was brought up was just enflamming things further.

And assuming they don't know that history, it seems much safer from their perspective to just assume it was a mutual issue and ask everyone to take a break.

@puzzlepiece87 On the other hand, we tend have at least one mod in this room at all times.

That said, part of the reason this room is tricky for us to moderate is that we don't want to start punishing people for just having a different opinion than the norm. If someone posts a link to some actual credible news source and it causes drama that doesn't mean the poster should be punished.

I've said it before, I don't buy the slippery slope argument.

So there's that fine line we need to tred between "No, this is just a case of eveyone getting to heated, let's just move on" and "Okay no, that's "not" okay behaviour or views to express"

3:00 PM
ban all users
success

@Yuuki It's not about a slippery slope so much as we can't just start banning every opinion we don't like. This room isn't intended to be the leftists paradise.

while we're on the topic of ROs, why is @Yuuki the only non-mod RO in here?

Like the majority of us, including myself, all lean pretty left, but that doesn't mean right leaning folks arne't allowed

@Wipqozn I don't think that was ever on the table.
@GodEmperorDune @Uni used to be, but I think he recused himself.

3:01 PM
@Yuuki I never was and please never make me one
I have no idea what the hell I'm going to do if I get blue text ever lol

@GodEmperorDune I'm not sure at all tbh

@Yuuki @Wipqozn I said it before also, I completely agree with Yuuki, I don't think there's any concern about sliding into banning every opinion. Banning news sources with documented problematic relationships to facts is a far cry from leftist paradise, and could apply equally to both sides of the aisle.

@Wipqozn Saying that we need to be careful when banning <clearly discredited news source> because we'll otherwise start banning every opinion we don't like is a clear example of the slippery slope argument.

(i was also confused by @Exeggutor then i realized it was a name change)

@Yuuki I'm actually not talking about breitbart

3:02 PM
@Yuuki Yes.

The way I view breitbart is we'd ban a hate site like KKK, and that's what they are, so good riddance

@Wipqozn I think there's an element of "causes harm" which I suppose can be tricky to navigate

Well, then I'd rather re-focus on that because that's the rule we're talking about right now.

capitalism causes harm but that's obviously a disputed point
so I'm not going to say that fits such a standard

I basically meant that if someone came in here with a controversial opinion and it caused drama we can't just punish that user for it. There are opinions that aren't allowed in chat, like if I started going on about "LOCK UP THEM BROWN PEOPLE" that would not be allowed. Racism isn't okay in the chat.

3:04 PM
And I'm saying I don't think that was ever on the table.

@Yuuki Okay

@Wipqozn unfortunately we have a racist president so sometimes it needs to be discussed

@GodEmperorDune yeah

@Wipqozn I agree with Yuuki again. I don't know who is getting anywhere close to this point.

I know we're having an exciting meta discussion but the State of New York just filed suit against basically the entire wretched family for their foundation just being a huge, illegal slush fund so inject it into my veeeeeins, along with this:
JUST IN: Justice Dept finds no evidence that Strzok, Page impacted investigations: report http://hill.cm/1s5AYap

3:05 PM
@GodEmperorDune @Wipqozn Discussing racism isn't the same thing as racism. But if we could try to determine why there's a worry about banning competing opinions that would be nice.

@TimStone please give me some of that too, thats the good stuff

anyways, I do need to get back to work, but breitbart is banned
consider this the official "Breitbart is dead forevers" post
Breitbart links are not allowed in this room due to it being considered a hate site whose sole purpose is to promote bigotry. Repeat offenders may face suspension.
14

@Wipqozn Good, thank you.

Sorry was that passive aggressive
or just regular aggressive
probably the second one

did we post the link to the journalist that went inside the immigrant concentration camp here yet?

3:10 PM
@Wipqozn I know you need to get back to work, so this is for later: it could make sense to set a more general standard. My own proposal is "documented consistent disregard for facts", but since this doesn't happen that often, a case-by-case approach may work too. But this has also happened multiple times with Dangerous and not just Breitbart. Hopefully people can take the hint.

I’m a part of the first group of journalists to go into the shelter for detained child migrants in Brownsville Texas since the zero tolerance separation policy was announced. 1000+ boys here. Going in right now. More tonight w @chrislhayes on @allinwithchris @MSNBC. #inners https://t.co/NeLlaDdSKv
(thread has more details)

@GodEmperorDune Glad to get more light on this.

I like all the posts that are like, "this is not who we are as a country"
like buddy,
this is who we have been as a country for a while
let's work to change that

@Unionhawk yeah this is probably the worst thing

3:13 PM
It's true, but people acting really unhappy is better than them being apathetic at least

@TimStone i dunno why he wants to bring the fradulent foundation up, how many stories did we already get about the shady ways it was doing things?

He's trying to derail it because it probably poses the most danger to them at the moment
Donald Trump personally directed his Foundation funds to be used to settle a lawsuit related to Mar A Lago. Here is the receipt
lol
"We have receipts. Like, literally."

what the fuck

Oh wow, I'm surprised this is just coming up now?
I remember when this happened

@TimStone I saw that one a long time ago

3:17 PM
Yeah, the actual event was in 2015, not sure why the lawsuit didn't come up

The Totin' Chip is an award in Boy Scouts of America that shows Scouts understand and agree to certain principles of using different tools with blades. It can be physically represented by a patch or a small paper card. With this, a Scout has the right to carry and use woods tools. A Scout must demonstrate to his Scout leader, or someone designated by his leader, that he understands his responsibility. The basic principle for blade-use in the Boy Scouts is to use blades only for constructive purposes. Basic safety rules and requirements for this recognition are: Read and understand woods tools use...

@TimStone fire the screenwriters, too unrealistic

Look no writer would debase themselves by suggesting everything be written in Sharpie

3:24 PM
@TimStone why would you have anything going on directly behind the target?

Actually that's a good question so does he have like a custom presidential sharpie for signing stuff?

this is like safety 101

@GodEmperorDune It's Fox

don't worry y'all, speaker ryan is gonna fix the concentration camps
REPORTER: Are you comfortable with the current zero tolerance policy leading to parents and children being separated at the border? SPEAKER RYAN: No I am not....this I do think ought to be addressed. We beleive it should be addressed in immigration legislation
In response to Speaker Ryan's comments on family separation at the border: @NancyPelosi: "This is not normal. In fact, it’s barbaric. It has to stop."
whoo bipartisan support, bill in 3...2...1...

"addressed in immigration legislation" buddy,
that means the bill is going to have riders (probably about the wall) and just in general suck ass

@GodEmperorDune Addressed in immigration legislation that he's doing his level best to avoid given that his own party members are currently forced to rally votes to demand a discussion.

@Yuuki yep, we have a winner

Oh, the NY AG office also sent letters to the IRS and FBI pointing out activities surrounding Trump's foundation that may have also violated federal law

this could've been avoided literally years ago if the house just voted on the immigration overhaul bill that the senate passed in 2011ish
@TimStone best birthday, 10/10 would gift again

3:32 PM
@TimStone remember when people were complaining about the Clinton Foundation
lmao

The quote that appears on the mural in immigrant child detention centers is from The Art of the Deal, a reference to a delayed real estate project on Central Park South.

@quartata I'm not sure if all that stuff is simply projection, or if it's just Trump being guilty of pretty much everything.

Of course

@TimStone LOL HE DIDN'T EVEN WRITE IT
@MadScientist it's like a spark of controversy vs the roaring inferno that is the trump foundation

@MadScientist I'd say projection, honestly
@TimStone the nicest attack ad

@TimStone lol this ad though, maybe it's just all political ads but

@TimStone ah. So u don't support Medicare for All? Do Tell. (girls get mad at me) Sorry. Im sorry. Im trying to remove it

@GodEmperorDune WHY DO YOU WANT TO BOG US DOWN WITH REGULATION

Some state governments are punishing people struggling with student loans by taking away their drivers’ & professional licenses. This is wrong. @marcorubio & I have a new bill to ensure borrowers can keep working to pay off their debt & build a future. https://mobile.nytimes.com/2018/06/14/business/rubio-warren-student-loans.html
Okay but did you make sure he wouldn't pretend he never cosponsored the bill tomorrow?

3:42 PM
@puzzlepiece87 actually i dunno if its regulation vs common sense

(this is quite good though and they should push it)

@GodEmperorDune RED TAPE

@TimStone "These people can't pay their loans. Let's take away things that facilitate their ability to make money to pay off loans."

@TimStone On a scale from 1 to "I'm don blankenship"
or is this even like some different axis

He basically just says his name and that his top two opponents don't support Medicare for All but he does, twice
So it's like a whole other thing

-1, doesn't even talk about cocaine mitch

@TimStone I mean that's pretty solid, plays a positive message about how I'm going to do a thing
it is also a primary and I assume DCCC has their hands all over it
and also I don't necessarily buy "elect better democrats" as the strategy but I mean it certainly can't hurt

3:52 PM
Yeah you really have to watch it, it's not like, bad content wise, it's just like "Alright dude 🤔", but maybe it's just me too

I'm still mad at Matt Bevin
I mean, from an accelerationist standpoint it's great
but like
accelerationism hurts people

Did you try checking if he's done some crimes? Because the way things are going it is likely that any given person has in fact done some crimes

it's super easy to play "matt bevin has this thing designed to take your coverage away through paperwork hell" against "we want to give you and also everyone else coverage by taking probably matt bevin's money (he's probably got a lot of it if I had to guess)"
but also like we also need to do work helping people navigate the paperwork hell until we can get the second one done

@TimStone That just looks so weird.

@TimStone There is nothing more fascinating than the crossover of very serious space with Twitch chat calling it fake unless the astronaut dabs

@TimStone I mean the attorney general is alleging that his pension bill qualifies as crimes
so

> Also Hannity: "Waterboarding and torture are effective and produce credible information."
The amusing and terrifying thing about Trump quotes is that you really can't tell whether they're real or not no matter how incoherent it gets.
> Trump: "Brian, you know Michael, Michael’s been on your show I’m sure a lot, you know Michael is a good person let me just tell you that Michael is uh, in business, he’s really a businessman, fairly big business as I understand it, I don’t know his business, but this doesn’t have to do with me,
> "Michael is a businessman, he’s got a business, he also practices law I would say probably the big thing is his business and they’re looking into something has to do with his business I have nothing to do with his business I can tell you he’s a good guy."

> Liberals and most progressives don't do a full power-structure analysis because, consciously or not, they accept the kind of elite theory of power that Mills popularized. They assume elites will always rule. At best, they debate how to replace a very naughty elite with a "better" elite, one they "can work with" ...

Asked about the biblical morality of separating children from parents at the border, @presssec says it's "very biblical to enforce the law."
Reporter asks @PressSec about the separation of immigrant children from their parents at the border. "Sarah, you're a parent. Don't you have empathy for what these people are going through?" https://t.co/Jh41PUR3Uj
Send her straight to the guillotine, jfc

@TimStone What was her reply? "If Trump told me, I would wholeheartedly burn my kids at the stake"?

I mean effectively, she refused to just answer him, trying to claim he was showing concern for camera time or whatever instead of the fact that it's heinous

@TimStone There's really no way to defend that policy, anyone that does is outright evil

The entire press briefing was just disgusting honestly

@quartata A Letter from Paul to the Pepes is often mistranslated as "own unto others, but actually own yourself" which has been a source of much confusion

Very nice, all three of you

This Oct. 5 email from Comey to Brennan and Clapper on publicly acknowledging Russian interference is infuriating.
"Okay but what if the poison becomes President?"

@TimStone I can easily believe that nobody at the FBI or the intelligence agencies believed that Trump could actually win. It's just so absurd, and it's very easy to convince yourself that he doesn't stand a chance

10:09 PM
.@RAICESTEXAS SAYS THERE ARE PARENTS WHO HAVE BEEN WAITING ***FOUR MONTHS*** POST-DEPORTATION FOR THE US TO RETURN THEIR BABY!!! THEY SKYPE ONCE A WEEK WITH THEIR ****EIGHT MONTH OLD**** WHO HAS BEEN EFFECTIVELY KIDNAPPED BY THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION.
blinks And what justification will they have for that?

@TimStone they don't need a justification, and they probably can get away with that. It's truly scary how far they're willing to go, and how far they actually can go without getting stopped.

I mean if the whole point is to "send them back", not doing that seems counterintuitive and just even more depraved than beforr

the objective is to traumatize children and their parents, to scare away anyone else from crossing the border.

I mean practically, of course, but it seems like cruel and unusual punishment

which will never work as a deterrent anyways.... people are escaping things that are much worse, for now at least

10:16 PM
and now they're planning tent cities for all the children they separated from their parents. In regions that get like 40°C hot. I really don't know what to say to all that, and even if I did, it would certainly violate the "be nice" rules

10:46 PM
@TimStone if we're going to have concentration camps for children then we might as well use them
it's just logic

If this was on r/relationships, you’d be learning about it from @Nicole_Cliffe. Instead, you’re learning about it from @ReneBruemmer http://montrealgazette.com/news/local-news/mcgill-music-student-awarded-350000-after-girlfriend-stalls-career

@TimStone O.o

Like why would you do that, knowing you'd have to hope the truth was never, ever discovered?
Good thread on how, before Jeff Sessions, the last time anyone really used Romans 13:1 in American political discourse as a justification for the state forcibly separating familes wholesale was... well, why don’t you guess https://twitter.com/yappelbaum/status/1007355335689015297

10:54 PM
@TimStone friendship ended with whoever tf
also this is why you don't let SOs access your email

user15026
@TimStone revenge, I guess?

user15026
But yeah, this is why you keep shit separate

@TimStone insecurity is a helluva drug

user15026
Heck, I'm married and I'd never ask my husband for access to any of his stuff

user15026
(We have enough discussions over me potentially sharing my Warframe creds so he can do a quest for me that I am stuck on, let alone anything more serious)

10:56 PM
Same, and my wife casually gives me passwords for some of her stuff and it freaks me out.

i mean i set up a thing so if i die or am incapacitated my wife can access all my online accounts, but otherwise nope
share netflix and the like, not much more than that

user15026
@GodEmperorDune Yeah, Netflix is all we share

user15026
@GodEmperorDune Yeah, that's different (and also a good idea, I should do something similar.)

user15026
My parents have a little book where tehy record all that stuff so when they die it goes to me and I deal with the stuff

user15026
(it includes notes on what they want done with the stuff, if applicable)

11:00 PM
