Q: Planning Meeting on Monday night, May 8 for a Launch Party

Isaac MosesPlease come to Chat on Monday, May 8 at 10:00 pm EDT for a planning meeting for our Launch Party. You can register for the chat and get a doodad for your calendar here. Purpose: Plan a party to celebrate our launch out of beta and possibly also act as a tool for promoting the site to new users...

6 hours later…
7:02 AM
@DoubleAA It could have included "Mos".

9 hours later…
4:05 PM
@DoubleAA, ping.

@jake pong.

@DoubleAA Where did you get the text from the Malbim on Ruth?
Unless you actually typed it in yourself.

@jake Bar Ilan Responsa Project, v17

@DoubleAA Ahh. Couldn't find it anywhere online.
Thanks.

Interesting: judaism.stackexchange.com/posts/9617/revisions I, too, didn't know (or, more likely, forgot) that that was possible.

4:29 PM
Should this really be tagged ?

Q: how do we get out of non-achdus and golus?

mechoel zevGiven that we are still in galus (physical as well as spiritual exile), and given that our sages tell us the destruction of the second Beis Hamikdash (which caused our galus) was caused by sinas chinam (causeless hatred), how do we rectify the situation? The simple answer of "ahavas chinam" (cau...

Also, what's everybody doing for Lag Baomer? @ShmuelBrin @DoubleAA @msh210

@HodofHod I don't think so. (But I also think it should be closed.)

@HodofHod I don't think so.
@HodofHod Skipping tachanun.

@DoubleAA I think I'm for closure as well, only because the FAQ says: " If you can imagine an entire book that answers your question, you’re asking too much."
@msh210 :D. You know the famous joke, right?

@HodofHod Maybe. Try me.
@HodofHod It's not worded very well, but basically asks for how to increase ahavas Yisrael. A book could be written on it, but the same is true of many of our questions which also are suitable for the site because smaller answers fit fine.

@msh210 "If the nations of the world could only understand the geshmak a yid feels when the chazzan finishes Chazaras Hashatz and starts kaddish on a Thursday, they would all convert!!"

4:35 PM
@HodofHod Hopefully soon it will be Too Localized.

@msh210 Hmmm, I guess. But as you say, it would have to be reworded
@DoubleAA Amen!!

Compare "cannot be reasonably answered in its current form." to Alex's comment.

@HodofHod :-)

I have to work on the delivery
Ok, but seriously! Attending a bonfire? Going to an archery range? Having a BBQ?
Whatever it is that people do?
Singing "Bar Yochai"?
@msh210 It's the simple pleasures in life :)

@HodofHod Me, nothing, actually. Skipping tachanun will be the extent of it, I think. Oh, and probably shaving.

4:51 PM
@msh210 Really?? Come on! At least make burgers for dinner! :D
@msh210 Sefirah beard getting itchy?
:)

5:03 PM
unfortunately will not be taking place this year

@ShmuelBrin Aww, I remember going to that. Got too bored with watching the concert on screen, so I walked down to E New York and offered to help with the game booths in the fair. Ended up running the whole thing. Good times :D
@ShmuelBrin So what are your plans for the holiday?

5:19 PM
@HodofHod East New York?? There are Jews still there?

@msh210 Avenue? Sure! There's an apartment complex on the corner of kingston, and a girls school on the corner of Brooklyn Ave.

@HodofHod Ah. I thought the neighborhood.

The maple st shul is even still around, I think

@HodofHod ENY Av is in CH I gather, then?

@msh210 Oh, I don't even know where that is.

5:23 PM
@HodofHod You don't want to.

@msh210 Yes, although close to the edge
@msh210 :D
I don't know NY geography very well.

@HodofHod Although my mom lived there for a while in the '50s. It used to be Jewish.
@ShmuelBrin, when I was growing up, my parents used to get donation requests from various tz'daka organizations. One was titled (in part) Rabbi Meir Baal Hanes (sic). eventually they got wise, changed it to Haness. :-)
2

@msh210 A lot of places did. I just heard a story about the Jewish community in Bedford-Stuyvesant

Speaking of which, one such organization (a Chabad one) was "Machine Israel". They, too, eventually got wise and changed it "Machne".
@HodofHod Yeah. Brownsville was another such neighborhod (near ENY actually).

oy, transliteration tzoris!
@msh210 Strange, wouldn't they have had to have a lawyer or something to create a non-profit like that? One would assume he might have pointed it out.

5:29 PM
@HodofHod They could have named the nonprofit something else and just used the name as a d/b/a.... you might not need to register that (IANAL).
@ShmuelBrin Now I have MBD in my head.

oy! mincha!
@msh210 Nu! Sefirah!

@HodofHod 770 has mincha every <del>10 or 15</del> 5 or 10 minutes, I don't think you've missed the last one yet.
@HodofHod Does a tune in your head count as listening to music?

5:46 PM
@msh210 @HodofHod they are becoming Jewish again!! (Chadeish Yameinu Kekedem :)

@ShmuelBrin Oh, really? Nice. Which neighborhoods?

Jews are slowly moving into brownsville, and are also moving across Eastern Parkway (which is IIRC Bed-Stuy). People are still scared to live there, but there is definitely a move there. I also heard that Satmar is expanding from Williamsburg from the north, so it may end up meeting together.

@ShmuelBrin Nice. B"H.

6:03 PM
@msh210 I'm nowhere near 770. I'm not even in that country.
@ShmuelBrin I went to a Sholom Zochor there a couple months ago. Scared me stiff.
@ShmuelBrin I heard that too, but I don't know how long it'll take

@HodofHod I once crossed eastern parkway (and had to walk a few blocks in that direction). I felt like I was in a different planet.

@HodofHod Maybe a different 770, not Eastern Pkwy?

@ShmuelBrin Yup. My brother used to live on lincoln. That wasn't so bad. But once you get to S. John, whew.
@msh210 Nope. The addresses here are all in the 4-digits

@HodofHod Drat.

@msh210 :D

Jin
6:19 PM
howdy
launch tomorrow is still on schedule. I'm 70% done with the main site's CSS conversion
3

@Jin Yay!
I'm very excited :D

Jin
so I haven't decided on the badge graphics
is it safe to go with the crown, or something else?
I think coin like badges, like the ones currently on Beta work too

@Jin If you're taking a poll, I'm fine with crowns

Jin

A: Design for Mi Yodeya

msh210I think the crowns are too status-y. Badges aren't worth that much on the site, and oughtn't be considered so valuable. Crowns are symbols of royalty.

@HodofHod has 5 upvotes
2
A: Design for Judaism.SE

Isaac MosesAn idea for badges: stylized crowns. In Avot 4:13, the image of a crown is used in a generalized sense to indicate status (priesthood, sovereignty) and achievement (Torah, good name): Rabbi Shimon would say: There are three crowns--the crown of Torah, the crown of priesthood and the crown of...

has 2 upvotes now

6:24 PM
@ShmuelBrin heh

Jin
personally i think round disks(coins) may be safer, not too many people will object to

@Jin The "open book" idea in the comment there has 5 upvotes; alas, you said it's impossible, right?

@Jin I agree

Jin
@msh210 yeah.. i don't think they'd work well in that tiny size. the size is only about 15px x 15px

@Jin Like what we have now? I agree; also, you already have the graphic, which (I'm assuming) makes it easy.

6:25 PM
@Jin Safer, but less meaningful, too, I fear

Jin
@msh210 i won't use the current Beta badge graphics exactly. I'll make new ones from scratch, but it will be similar.
another idea i liked was the leaf.
3
same shape as the ones from the Tree

@Jin That's nice. @IsaacMoses's suggestion of flames also got 3 comment-upvotes.
@Jin, I think the short answer is "the site users haven't been able to agree on anything, so do what you want" :-).

Jin
@msh210 I liked the flame too. but I'm not sure if it works with the silver badge.
3

@Jin I assume the colors are set in stone, or, at least, would be a pain in the neck to change?

Jin
@msh210 yeah the badge colors are a pretty set convention for all SE sites

3 hours later…
9:27 PM
@msh210 I agree. Coins are fine, leaves are fine, and I hadn't seen the flame suggestion before now but that's also fine. If you go with coins (like the current badges) you can always change later, or not. FWIW, I didn't even know the badges were customizable until @Jin mentioned it; I assumed we all got coin-like circles.

Jin
@MonicaCellio most of the SE sites do use some sort of rounded shapes for badges, but not in all cases

@MonicaCellio For instance android.stackexchange.com/badges
BTW @Jin those badges look a little bigger than 15x15.

Jin
@DoubleAA the android badge icons are 16px wide
they're also shorter too, height wise, 10px.

10:11 PM
@Jin at 16x16 and with my vision, all the round ones I've seen have looked the same to me so far. :-)
I just got a notification for a flagged post (here, I presume). It asked me to choose "valid" or "invalid" but I didn't know whether the subject was the post or the flag (spam/objectionable). So I dismissed it without acting. For future reference, which is it?

Jin
@MonicaCellio hmm I'm not sure. I'm not a chat expert..
I think you'd have to be a mod of a room to see that type of notifications?

@Jin huh, weird. I've never seen one before and AFAIK I haven't crossed any interesting reputation boundaries lately. @DoubleAA, do you know?

@MonicaCellio It's a rep privilege, not dependent on mod status.
1
A: Chat flag notification

Michael MrozekIt's exactly the same as the flags list on the main site. You can see what posts have spam/offensive flags and add your own if you like; posts are killed when they get to six flags. The only reason it seems different is on the main site you need to go to a special page to see the list, but on cha...

10:31 PM
@MonicaCellio It's only happened to me twice I think. Remember that your chat rep is the combined one of all the other sites, so you can pass boundaries without realizing it.

11:03 PM
@DoubleAA thanks. So when it asks me to choose "valid" or "invalid", is it referring to the flag or to the post? If I agree that it's spam, which answer do I give?
(I don't have enough rep anywhere to respond to flags on the regular site, so I don't have that context.)

@MonicaCellio I think you mark the flag as valid if you agree with the flagger, but I've never handled a main-site flag. Any thoughts @msh210 @HodofHod who are in the room?

@DoubleAA That's how it works on-site. I assume that's how it works here.

@DoubleAA I've never handled a chat flag, they go too fast

@msh210 the answer you posted says "same as...the main site", so I'll go with that. If it ever happens again. :-) Thanks.

HEY!! THATS UNCALLED FOR!!! ;)

11:10 PM
@HodofHod err, what?

oh, don't you act all innocent!

Somebody flagged me, and I'm going to find who it was if it's the last thing I do!! GRRRR!!!!!

@HodofHod wasn't me, but thanks for the suggestion. :-)

:D
Wow, this is a really large group of people in here!
Whats everybody doing for Lag Baomer?

@HodofHod I'm making an upsherenish for my son, bez"h, in the afternoon (from 5 to 8 PM). Anyone in the J.SE community who's in Crown Heights, drop in and take a snip!

@Alex Awww, I was going to come in for the yom tov, but eventually decided against it.

11:22 PM
@HodofHod Pity. I guess we'll have a chance to talk at the launch party, though.

@Alex B'ezras Hashem. Are you doing any events? Whats going on in CH this year?
@Dave @DoubleAA @MonicaCellio
3 mins ago, by HodofHod
Whats everybody doing for Lag Baomer?
Hi @WAF!

WAF
@HodofHod Hi HodofHod!
Big day coming up for you.

@Alex I actually just might be in Brooklyn on Thursday. Maybe I'll drop by. Where is the event?

@jake At my house. Not sure how I should give out the address - I don't really want anyone in the world who can view these transcripts to have it; maybe I can send it to one of the mods and they can send it around via e-mail
@HodofHod I think there's just the usual day in the park, as is usual when Lag BaOmer's not on Sunday

@Alex Fair enough. Don't feel obliged though.

11:35 PM
@Alex Well, there is a Tzach list on shmais, and I think that there is a mention of your last name somewhere.

@ShmuelBrin True. It is a pretty rare name, after all.

www.shmais.com

@WAF Yup!
@jake, @Alex I'd be happy to facilitate said exchange of info
@Alex Shh, it's a secret!! :D

@HodofHod Much appreciated. E-mail me - my address is in my J.SE profile - and I'll reply with the details.

Yeah, it is. I was going to come in, but a mashpia advised that my current activities may be a better present than my presence

11:40 PM
@HodofHod Dehaynu?
(if you don't mind sharing, that is)

ANNOUNCEMENT If anyone wants the info to attend Alex's son's upsherenish on Lag Baomer, I can email it to you, just ping me here.

@HodofHod Mazal Tov.

@Alex, with your permission^^

@HodofHod Of course.

WAF
Mazal tov, @Alex!

11:42 PM
@WAF Thanks!

I don't know if you'd want

there

@jake Thank you :D

http:/judaism.stackexchange.com/users/1353/hahu-gavra

@ShmuelBrin Well, not the one from Berachos 58a, maybe, But the one from Sukkah 44b - why not? (though I guess now he's out of season)

@Alex I think @ShmuelBrin was referring to the user's listed webpage.
@HodofHod Yeah... maybe don't send @HahuGavra the email.

11:53 PM
@jake, heads up! Email coming your way!

@HodofHod Thanks.

@IsaacMoses We've almost filled a whole row of users here in chat!!

@HodofHod Depends on your resolution and monitor width. I've got a roe plus one icon.

@HodofHod you have a wider screen than me

@IsaacMoses Oh, true, I didn't think of that. Yes, I actually do have a pretty wide screen

WAF
11:57 PM
@ShmuelBrin Mine too.
