5:36 PM
@Adám I can offer free toki pona lessons :)

1 hour later…
7:02 PM
@ngn NE!

ngn
@Zacharý "NE!"?

@ngn No. Just, no to Toki Pona.

ngn
7:55 PM
@Zacharý what do you have against it? it's like the apl of conlangs

@ngn No. Just, no. It's like a heavily reduced APL, one without parentheses.

ngn
@Zacharý huh, which spoken language has parens? but ok, shrug never mind

@ngn English.

@ngn which spoken language doesn't

ngn
seriously??

8:00 PM
I mean recursion-style stuff (I don't know how to phrase it)
Toki Pona is more like the BrainFuck of conlangs

> The trunks being now ready, he de- after kissing his mother and sisters, and once more pressing to his bosom his adored Gretchen, who, dressed in simple white muslin, with a single tuberose in the ample folds of her rich brown hair, had tottered feebly down the stairs, still pale from the terror and excitement of the past evening, but longing to lay her poor aching head yet once again upon the breast of him whom she loved more dearly than life itself, parted.

ngn
oh, you mean subjunctive clauses? like "which"?
not parentheses
there are ways around it

almost every language has parentheses (but I'm not sure about all languages (e.g. Arabic (have you ever seen Arabic with parentheses?)))

I'd rather not have to hack around everything in a human language

ngn
@EriktheOutgolfer in that sense you can use them in toki pona too

8:08 PM
Toki Pona is very much like BF, minimalistic to a (major) fault.

ngn
@Zacharý bf has only a few "words", it's more like the Ku language from the planet Plyuk :)
tp has ~120, about as many as apl

If they were all one symbol, I might see a comparison. But no, ..., and isn't there some weird tomfoolery with numbers (or lack thereof)
@ngn For a human language? That is not a good idea.

ngn
@Zacharý it's an experimental minimalist constructed language, nobody expects it to take the place of English

Never knew you were into conlangs though.
Ever heard of Pirahã?

ngn
@Zacharý of course
@Zacharý no numbers, no nested clauses
@Zacharý allegedly disproving Chomsky

8:16 PM
Sound familiar? (I might be misremembering stuff about TP)

ngn
@Zacharý yes, it's probably similar to tp, though of course I don't speak a single word of Piraha

At least with APL things can be short though :p

ngn
@Zacharý tp has hieroglyphs as an alternative to alphabetic spelling

and other alternative methods of writing, e.g. using two latin letters per word

8:25 PM
maybe conlangs is a better fit

1 message moved from The APL Orchard

@EriktheOutgolfer But we were talking of the linguistics of it (and Pirahã as well)
Linguistics: where topics go to die

In chat, pretty much anything is okay as long as it keeps this room from dying ;)
yeah, it's obvious in the starboard

Even if a conversation gets moved here ... it just dies pretty much

this room is a graveyard
:P

8:38 PM
Yep. I can say from experience

1 hour later…
10:03 PM
Point. Made.
