12:07 AM
roar

12:32 AM
Not the most current book on Docker, but should be all the essentials.
The fact that I'm spending money on this shows I'm serious about learning Docker.
@MichaelFrank Or WinKey+L.

somebody just gave my q and the answer a downvote and also a close vote for opinion-based :I superuser.com/questions/1322387/…
maybe a mod could look into it in case all 3 came from the same user who doesn't feel ok atm
@MichaelFrank I just did a ctrl+alt+del and I can totally hit cancel in there to gain access :p
0/10 wouldn't trust

@Hakase we can't typically see who dved a post

maybe it indicates mass downvoting or close-voting for that user
idk much about mod tools
but from these votes I'm assuming the user's either grumpy or doesn't know how the system works
these things probably sort out themselves eventually
this is kind of a first for me tho

12:48 AM
They do. If it's a decent question sometimes people upvote and no one else closevotes

@Burgi is there a good recording you can link?

1:10 AM
@Hakase No, it's totally legit, company mandated training told me so!

@MichaelFrank next thing you know company mandated training wasn't up to code, and the company mandated legal department isn't on your side when bad things go down :I

Also, here's a fun "hypothetical" situation for you all... Say you go out for a run on your lunch break, you get nice and sweaty and while you're changing back into your very professional looking work clothes, you notice you have not packed spare underwear.

Do you A) put your sweaty underwear back on or B) "freeball" it for the rest of the day?
And since we need to keep this on-topic... NO, I did not have backups.

freeball but make sure my zipper is aaaaall the way up and probably insurance-covered by a shirt tucked out above it >.>
if freeballing is out of the question and the sweat is very not pleasant, there is a case to be made for a handmade sweat dessicator in shape of a layer of paper towels because nobody will ever know unless they read this very chat message and trace it back to that hypothetical someone

@MichaelFrank always have backups

@JourneymanGeek persperate times call for desperate measures

1:16 AM
Haha
I don't know if I could handle the... crinkly feeling of the paper.
Our paper towels are not very soft.

maybe I should move this to the local machine

So... is your virtualization server in the cloud?
What do you use it for?

@bwDraco I think most folks here have dedicated servers :p. @allquixotic offered you the use of one iirc :p

Bob
1:30 AM
@bwDraco one of the dedis
one thing VPSes don't really work for is large data storage
also, none of that 'cloud' crap.
I don't need to scale up or down 50 times a day

And I think you find stuff that needs it, then grow as you need to

Bob
so I don't want to pay the 10x price premium for that

So... project ideas? I feel like I'm not making good use of what I have.

Bob
host a file server

Ehhh
You start with a problem that needs solving before you get a tool

1:34 AM
^

I HAVE A HAMMER, WHAT CAN I SMAS

My application was never really to store large amounts of data FWIW.
I was thinking about how to use all that compute and storage on my desktop to actually learn skills and make myself more employable.
Due to tight budgets (the result of my not having permanent full-time employment), I'm rather hesitant to do anything that requires a recurring expense, like a subscription.
Hence, I'm focusing on stuff I can do locally.
I can spend a bit more on hosting, but that's about it.

Bob
you have two standing offers from people in this chat if you want a remote server to play with :P

I was thinking about using that to learn ZFS FWIW, but not sure if it's the best way to use it.
(because I can't arbitrarily add/remove disks to try out different things)

Bob
1:49 AM
*shrug* not everything needs to be optimised to infinity
use vbox then
or vmware
or qemu/kvm

Hence, doing it locally.

As for Docker, I'm waiting on a book to arrive.
(though I've done a bit of playing around with the tools and reading other tutorials)

kvm is fun. Slightly esoteric done right, but designed to be run on very little

2:09 AM
I still remember being curious about operating systems when I was in high school, when virtualization opened a world of operating systems and software to explore.
Linux distros, FreeBSD, Haiku, ReactOS...
Heck, even Plan 9.

hah
Every so often I give haiku a try

1 hour later…
3:15 AM
any Samsung Gear watch owners up in here?

Bob
@allquixotic @TMLCat might've had one?

@Bob Nah I had a Microsoft Band

Bob
oh yea

There#'
There's something in my butt and it hurts
And I feel like I should jump off a bridge
WHeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
I may have taken too many drugs

3:34 AM
Did you take them in your butt?
2
Or are those sentences unrelated?

Unable to process. Deferring response.

Bob
4:09 AM
yay
I get to merge 8 databases
of differing schema
while moving files that the databases refer to
there's no way this could possibly go wrong!

user226528
I wish you luck. 😊

user226528
And I hope whomever you are doing this for, will appreciate your work.

Bob
@EUserNameError thankfully, this is a personal project, so if I mess up only I can be disappointed :P

@Bob well now I have a Gear S3 Frontier :P
couldn't wait until September for the Gear S4 or August for the Note 9 (which according to leakers will basically be a newer Snapdragon and that's it)
ditching iMessage sucks but oh well

I need to take up a personal project.

4:24 AM

lol
Or is this getting annoying?

@bwDraco personally I don't get annoyed; we do enough repetition of stuff ourselves that it's hard to complain... but it is sort of sad to just passively observe this pattern you're in of "I need to X" then never do it...

You want a personal project? Write me an iOS podcast app that will automatically download the oldest unplayed episode from a feed.

maybe because that was me a decade ago :P

Let me select the number of unplayed episodes to keep at a time, and have it automatically delete the ones that are marked as played.

4:28 AM
I'd need a Mac and iOS devices to do this.

4:49 AM
@Bob You looking forward to the Australia Box Office hit of the year? Occupation.

Bob
@MichaelFrank wat

Basically Tomorrow When the War Began, but aliens.
Also, it has a Kiwi as the lead role.

Bob
@bwDraco help me merge my sqlite databases :D
@MichaelFrank green or gold? :P

?
Oh
Black.
Or brown, I guess.
First Maori in space, first Maori to defend Australia from aliens... This guy is on a roll.

5:14 AM
ok, the thing that's pissing me off a lot about the Note 8 is notifications I can't dismiss
Imgur upload complete. OK, great. Now let me tell it to GTFO my notification bar

Bob
5:26 AM
@allquixotic ...slide it sideways?
I use opengur... never had trouble dismissing the upload completes
the only notifications you can't dismiss are "ongoing" ones, which mean the app is still running - usually used by video/music players. and you can still hide those if you want

5:56 AM
@MichaelFrank two words.
SPACE. HAKA.
@bwDraco do it
Like seriously. DO IT
With less asterixen apparently
When I was younger I literally would grab whatever very old, obsolete hardware I could get my paws on to play with stuff.

@JourneymanGeek I already tried Shia LaBoeuf videos for him

And my current infra literally started with a 15 dollar a year VPS, then a VM @allquixotic kindly ran for me, then a better VPS (4 dollars a month!) then cheaper dedis.
but before that? I literally tried out various things on old laptops.

@JourneymanGeek you can have a VM back if you want :P
my server is in a much better (more stable) place now

@allquixotic I'l actually pretty well up on what I need

cool

6:04 AM
I actually am debating dropping my old dedi at some point
I'm probably using it to test/document a new setup first tho
I offered it to the SD project (Ironically while I don't agree with certain choices they make and the attitude of some members - they do enough good that it felt like a good idea) but no response :(

SD?

smoke detector

@MichaelFrank no. Those sentences are however not entirely unrelated

1 hour later…
7:18 AM
._.
On one hand, its the most privacy friendly way to do it
On the other, one could literally ask an older friend to buy them one
DO THESE PEOPLE LIVE IN THE SAME REALITY WE DO?

user226528
@JourneymanGeek You are mistaking that certain pass with a "Get out of jail once free" card. These passes can have hashed data.

you're literally buying off a news stand with verification.
Also
> The stores would sell a “porn pass,” a 16-digit code for around £10, and would require a driver’s license or passport to verify the buyer’s age. That method wouldn’t require someone to enter their personal information into an online database

user226528
Correct. Instead of some sleazy website knowing your details, a news stand owner sees them once and probably forgets them later.

exactly

user226528
The troubling part, however, is that they bother doing it at a news stand. They could eliminate the middle man and have people visit some sort of British registry website and get a pass hash straight from there.

user226528
7:24 AM
Aren't they doing such a thing when they want to issue a driver's license?

user226528
Another option would be to ban p*** altogether.

user226528
Also, personal abstinence works fine in protecting the privacy.

But privacy!
and rights!
And MORAL PANIC!

user226528
And you started writing unintelligible fragments again. So, for now, bye.

Bye Faliesha!

7:41 AM
I clearly need to do that more often

@MichaelFrank Would you mind to behave like a decent human being?
2

user226528
I wonder what's the difference between the two variants of the "Ignore user" commands, but I used the variant one on both of them.

Sounds like someone is a bit twitchy with the flag button.

@MichaelFrank Seems so when random people show up :)

@halirutan wtf does the new name mean?
or is this not and you're just a new user, who our special pet has been talking about?

7:53 AM
@allquixotic what has changed in that decade? what have you done?

@djsmiley2k I'm clueless what you're talking about, but I got notified that some cannot follow the chat rules.

@bwDraco why have you gone from javascript, to node.js to writing iOS apps now?
don't you already have 1001 other things you already need to learn queued up?

Also, you're waiting on a book, to work on docker?

DO THE THING!
Literally there's dozens of tutorials.

7:56 AM
you written the script to built an entire env yet?
no? get on with it.

Throw together a darned VM. Google, play.

/me screams
I would give my left foot, to be able to have time to do things.

Indeed.

morning

user226528
Hi :)

7:57 AM
I've had about 20 minutes on the laptop at home tonight... Almost finished my cup of tea, which means it'll be hang out with the wife time soon.

@djsmiley2k you can like restructure your work day to get some free time out of it
unless you can't lol

I have a decent bit of free time at work on occasion, doesn't mean I can use it to learn whatever I like though. :|

who on earth has time to "restructure their work day"?
who on earth has time to "restructure their work day"?

these days I'm spending 20 minutes at home drinking tea and browsing these chat rooms and whatever facebooks you have, but I could be using them to work on personal projects in the morning and do the useless browsing at work during lunch breaks
@Burgi who said we're on earth?

But time spent deciding is time spent not doing

8:00 AM
your ping

time not spent at all is… something!
@Burgi moon is not that far away honestly

All time is spent. Saved time is an illusion

reality is only what we can perceive and sometimes illusions are more real than truth~

@Hakase no because it is different every time and a video of it would ruin the surprise

anyway I've been trying to spend at least 20 minutes a day working on my personal projects and so far it's been working well enough

8:03 AM
@bwDraco a few mental realignments. There is no competition. Most of us do these things for fun or cause it's the best way to get access to something we want.

writing a daily log of activity also helps with motivation to keep going

You don't need to run a server or learn docker to be one of the cool kids

@Burgi how would it ruin the surprise if it's different every time?

For some good odd value of cool.

and I've not seen it once
the surprise is 100% still there for me, unruined
I've watched a certain pax panel throughout different years, about 5 times and it's the same every time, and still great every time

8:05 AM
We do help each other out as we can or run similar things but that's just having similar needs

if they do it again in future years, I'll watch it again

@Hakase the surprise at being screamed at by a 6 foot 6 mad australian

I've already got screamed at during the trailer for it on that site
but there was too much text and no full video link so I asked you instead of trying to figure all that out :p

user226528
@Burgi Question: Do you ever watch association football?

@Hakase hah. I am a fan of just sitting down and doing the thing

8:09 AM
@EUserNameError good god no

@bwDraco I keep pestering my dudes to start personal projects and so far I think my efforts have brought some results. If you'd like, someone here might start pestering you. Just ask :)
@JourneymanGeek I admire people like you and I strive every day to be more like that.
@EUserNameError edited messages might not trigger bots
at least that's how it works in my room with my bot >.>

user226528
@Hakase They do. I have past experience.

if they're programmed that way

user226528
Yeah. I believe CJC is programmed that way.

I specifically didn't make it that way for some reason which I don't remember now, but it made sense at the time :p
(I have a different bot)

user226528
8:12 AM
"it"?

!!taytayboom

user226528
What bot is that?

Bot seems... asleep?

a closed source abomination please don't go looking for it, it's not representative of my current programming skills >.>

user226528
Of course. Consider the matter dropped.

8:13 AM
A personal project! Update the bot.

25
A: Is this definition of BIOS incorrect?

djsmiley2kThe code on the processor is known as the microcode. A form of firmware which resides on the processor and can be updated there from a running system The BIOS exists on the motherboard, interacts with all the hardware to boot the machine to a point at which a bootloader can take over. That sai...

it's been working for 4 years and I've already updated it to the 4th major revision recently

definately the gift that keeps on giving

no need to invest more time yet

@MichaelFrank gl hf.

8:15 AM
I've got a couple other personal projects going on atm and I'm doing some notable progress on them these days

@djsmiley2k Oh lord no, I have no interest in working on a bot.

=)
I wouldn't mind working on it, if i had time and knowledge
I can learn, but getting the time is slgihtly more difficult.

you can always get time if you can afford to reduce your work day length

user226528
AFK

I've seen people start working from home where managers can't look over their shoulders

8:17 AM
yeah, but half my work is physical recabling

You need a pretty flexible employer to be able to do that.

and I won't shortchange work, for me to work on something entirely unrelated
I wouldn't mind if it's a project that assists work, but I can't say that about working on the bot hahah

I guess the other option is to earn enough to afford to have an extra free day a week

yup
that'd be nice.

like turn your 5 day week into a 4 (or 4.5) day week, move these hours around

8:18 AM
Thing is, I could prob do my work in 4 days.
but then they'd give me more work ;D

maybe you should try that

personal projects done at work are property of the company

nah you negotiate the work hours, etc
@Burgi if they know about them

@Hakase you've never worked for evil overlords then
because the moment you mention 'I only need 4.5 days to get everything done'
they go 'here's 0.5days of work then'
there's no negotiation.

yea, I like to avoid employees with horns and dark crimson scales for skin

8:19 AM
yup
but not always easy
where I am now is great tbh
So I don't abuse it (tho I easily could, and see people doing so constantly). :/

for me it's been easy, you see them on the interview, pretend you're a courier and you came to the wrong address, turn around and prepare for the next interview :p

ye I know some work requires you to work during standard hours like everyone else coz otherwise you aren't able to get anything done without contacting the other people

Ah to live a life where I could afford to walk away from an interview.
@Hakase this place is partially like that

currently I have too much downtime coz I manage to stay waiting almost half of my day on others to do their part of the ping-pong

8:22 AM
but I expect that'll be changing in the near term
udue to the fact we're getting more and more clients overseas
@Hakase pffft others.
now wtf was I about to check

so I read educational literature and sometimes do something on my own projects while nobody's looking >.>

@Hakase oh yah sure

@djsmiley2k what are you here just so you don't get fined? :p

I'm currently spinning up a vm to fire up nagios, to write a load of custom monitoring scripts
I do that too

I thought all IT people can afford to choose employers

8:23 AM
Fined, or fired?
lol nope

you can get fired for being in a chat, I've seen that happen :p
"he's spending all day in chat!"
on stackoverflow, duh

Oh sure

Boss would not see it that way.

my current work place works on 'If your work is done, then carry on.'

there were productivity reasons of course but yea that was the official reasoning

8:24 AM
No one questions me, because I work damn hard.
hell, sometimes people on here actually help me debug stuff.

I basically got into the career thanks to SO

At my old, old old old job, I fixed everything so much, that I ran out of work to do, and would watch youtube and play dwarf fortress all day.

there's no explaining it to some people tho

I also started learning python there,

I've had a couple interviews with really old people and they didn't understand how I know the things I know without having read a single programming book and "but the internet doesn't have all that information!"

8:26 AM
you sound like a total hippy

@Burgi who? :D
I read part of a databases book

box lol

And I read CCNA 1 and 2 books.

sounded like "I read the back of the spray can"

yeha, picked up MSSQL off the shelf, read the back of the box, now MSSQL Senior tech ;)

8:27 AM
@Hakase I kind of imagine him reading the outside of the DB server hoping to understand what it's doing.

haha
manuals are a good thing to read
I've been reading a bunch and I'm on my way to full stack dev
never wanted to have a career of that sort but hey it's not too hard and the conditions are better than most other jobs
anyway, best advice for making progress on personal projects: 20 minutes minimum every day, and lead a diary of progress
repo history is ok but sometimes commit comments don't allow for nice description formatting
and it's more difficult when you do non-code stuff

9:28 AM
yup
What's your day job @Hakase?

9:54 AM
Strange. I'm trying to change UI language of Firefox. I swear these instructions at support.mozilla.org/hu/questions/1018686 used to work, and it's matched by superuser.com/q/488141/267786 too. But now in the about:config list, neither "general.useragent.locale" nor "intl.locale.requested" keys exist.

ugh.... minion hasn't shown up today

@Burgi didn't he quit?
i guess you were hoping he'd work his notice :/

yeah

sucks.

user226528
Who's "minion"?

10:04 AM
@Burgi's minor.

user226528
@djsmiley2k Really? I didn't know Burgi is married. In fact, strongly thought the other way.

No
minor at work.

user226528
Ah.

user226528
Hence the nickname "minion".

> minion
ˈmɪnjən/Submit
noun
a follower or underling of a powerful person, especially a servile or unimportant one.

user226528
10:06 AM
Yeah, I am aware. I was hoping for an interpretation other than such a not-so-polite definition.

user226528
But then again, Burgi never sounded like a "powerful person" anyway. 😉

i can crush my enemies like an empty crisp packet

@Burgi Just sorta... crinkle them up real small?

user226528
Bravo! That was quite macho.

yup :)

user226528
10:09 AM
Of course, my grandfather was an artillery officer, so he could only "blow them to kingdom come".

user226528
Not so macho at all. ;)

user226528
This expression has always bothered me. Isn't "kingdom come" heavens? So, it is only logical that if you want to blow someone somewhere, that place gotta be somewhere with fire and brimstone.

@Burgi Isn't minion the resident bot?

no
That's cavil.

10:25 AM
lol
!!rswamped
!!ping

user226528
The bot's not responding today.

user226528
Don't bother.

sigh @bob cavil no respond

user226528
Bob's not responding either.

user226528
(By the way, the word under ***** is "lunch".)

10:30 AM
hmmm 11:30am and I'm hungry :(

user226528
What time do you usually eat?

user226528
I on the other hand feel sleepy.

@EUserNameError you have a full keyboard. Use it. Stuff like that reeks of trying to be too clever.

@EUserNameError 12:00pm because, hungry :D

;p
Cavil's a bit janky. I'm sure someone will kick his cylon rear soonish.

10:54 AM
Nah
@allquixotic will jsut giveu p on it
@bwDraco be more like @rahuldottech. He's produced so much stuff I can't even remember it all.
The funny part is his producing stuff is just a distraction technique so he doesn't do what he should be doing too (revising).
