why do we make mistakes rather than do them? English is one weird confusing language

Weird because we have separate words for "do" and "make," which not all languages have, or weird because of the specific situations where we use one and not the other?

both and more

@Zanna I found the answer. It is because do is a shell keyword.
$ make mistakes
cc     mistakes.c   -o mistakes
$ do mistakes
bash: syntax error near unexpected token `do'

hahaha good work

Have you tried emulating a PC on your phone? I've heard that works.
:)

haha no I haven't tried that

Lol, but actually.... The Asus ZenPhone has an Intel x86 CPU and someone actually managed to run Windows 7 at decent speed on it though QEMU

:D

I wonder if anyone has tried it with Windows Thin PC. (It can be used for more than just a thin client.)

@EliahKagan I haven't seen that before, but absent-mindedly following that link led me to something about "bachelorette", so I hastily closed the tab

@Zanna What link? The one to the main page of English.SE?

yes, sorry

I guess I'd better make a whole bunch of edit suggestions, so good that reviewers will approve them immediately, to posts on English.SE, before asking you if you want to post a question there asking about why we say "make a mistake," so the bachelorette question will be knocked off the front page.

I'm having trouble with reading comprehension today too...
My translation: "During lunch break today I will be on the playing field."
Google translate version of the same text: "At the feeding time today I will be on the goat."

3:47 PM
@Zanna What language are you translating?

@EliahKagan Tamil

@Zanna Thanks for posting that answer!
Could the second paragraph be reworded? It sounds like it's saying that when a file is a text file, that means it has no shebang line.
Also, should the messages in this room that are about technical aspects of what various C++ constructs do when they're run as Bash code, relating to that answer, be moved to the Island? If so, then I can probably do that later today. (I like to take my time and look carefully at each message to avoid moving things that ought to stay or converting understandable conversations into nonsense.)
