The engineering sample that I have has 5 cores that'll do 5.0 GHz without overheating and without going over 1.4v. Every single one of them fail at 5.1 GHz even at dangerous voltages. The retail chips are slightly worse (4.8 - 4.9 GHz). So in a sense, my ES chip is special - but it has shitty cache and shitty memory controller.

I run my 10-core Skylake at 3200. And my 14-core ES at 3466. The former will boot at as high as 4000, but instantly errors under any sort of real load.

@僕の彼女 For the ES chip that I have, it refused to post above 2800 on an Asus Apex at work. But at home on the Gigabyte, it's stable 3466. It'll post at 3600, but won't make it past boot.

On my 10-core 7900X, it used to be rock stable at 3800, and would boot at 4000. But it seems to have degraded so much that I now run it at 3200. 3600 is flaky and occasionally fails to wake up from sleep.

Have two systems at work running 4 x 16GB on Asus Apex boards. Both running with identical memory at 3800c16. But I haven't properly stress-tested them since one of the most stressful sustained memory tests is my very own Pi program which I cannot use at work due to IP restrictions.

Because I don't publish anything about the project or its algorithms, some of the critical "inventions" have been (or potentially could be) patented by someone else who reinvents it. So this means I can get sued for patent infringement in the future. So I publish cryptographic hashes of the source code online which gets archived by crawlers.

So in the unlikely even that this ever comes to litigation, I'll be able to produce a snapshot of the source code that hashes to a hash that was published before the patent was made. Thereby demonstrating prior art to invalid said patents.

try an older driver version, the one supplied with your factory OS image

sometimes you can't upgrade these custom laptop drivers

maybe disable bluetooth which you don't use or something

basically disable anything non critical and see if it still freezes

@nhahtdh Does the BIOS provide any control over the system clocks? I'm guessing no since only the high-end gamer laptops are unlocked that way.

@Hakase memtest misses a lot of stability issues.

I had a situation with a nettop unit which wouldn't even start without a 1-2 minute rest unplugged from power, and when it started it would freeze

memtest didn't even had a chance to show any errors, it would also freeze

turned out to be bad ram, but that nettop only supported 1gig ram sticks and after I tried different manufacturers, it also turned out that it has limitations by models also

so it's in the trash now :p
