> This thing is so fast my OS now boots before the video driver can properly initialize.

@bwDraco He's using it in an X230 as well, that's awesome.
Love my X230, although it has recently started turning itself off for no reason.

Bob

@MichaelFrank apparently those can be upgraded with a x220 keyboard ;p

Ave
@Bob lmao

@JourneymanGeek up...graded?

12:28 AM
@MichaelFrank upgraded
same frame, and you can fit in the last of the oldschool, non chicklet keyboards into those apparently

I might track one down...

Pulled open my GS108 switch... there's no electrolytic caps visible on the board. It's all SMD parts. No wonder these things are utterly reliable...

@MichaelFrank I might order one of aliexpress at some point (my x220 has keyboard issues). I'll keep you posted if I do

12:57 AM
@JourneymanGeek Pretty cheap, $36 NZD... I'm tempted.

...and all eight ports work, zero trouble.

@MichaelFrank sorry! :)

1:11 AM
@JourneymanGeek Will think about it. Might need to reapply the thermal paste on my X230 before I think about buying new parts for it. Random shutdowns and all.

lol ya
(I've been putting it off on account of, well, joblessness ;p)

2 hours later…
2:54 AM
After a year and a bit of working with one monitor and the laptop screen here at work, I finally decided to put a second monitor on my desk.
SO MUCH BETTER.
I should have done this when I started!

2 hours later…
Bob
5:27 AM
floff
@JourneymanGeek we need to get you into SoaSE again :P

@Bob its one of those games that I've never really been able to get into ;p

1 hour later…
6:48 AM

7:12 AM
I'm supprised they still offer support tbh

user226528
I wonder what happens if a computer is shot...

@FleetCommand ??
with a gun?
It goes 'Oooooh, right in the ram sticks!'

user226528
I almost never update my drivers. Updates almost always either break things or don't make any difference at all.

user226528
In case of one HP Pro laptop, uninstalling the Realtek driver improve audio quality.

user226528
NVIDIA is no exception.

7:15 AM
Nod
like bios updates, they generally only needed for either 'new tech' or when something is broken

user226528
Hmm...

user226528
I've always had the latest BIOS versions so I have no experience with actually updating them.

morning

user226528
I have experience with trying to do so and finding it unnecessary.

@FleetCommand only once or twice, in many thousands of computers, have i needed to update a bios to fix something
tho when i've done so, it's been realitively painless these days.

user226528
7:21 AM
You know, once I thought I definitely needed a firmware update because I wanted to upgrade a mid-range CPU (a Core i5 Sandy Bridge, I think) to a high-end one (a Core i7 Ivy Bridge) from the same series. Turns out, the firmware was already up-to-date.

> Send me an email with my password hint
much better

8:03 AM
Sometimes, Google reCaptcha is really frustrating.
I tried like 10+ times to get past it..

8:50 AM
@RogUE Are you a bot? ;p

> Per Variety, the Christmas comedy has jumped over to Disney’s bourgeoning over-the-top streaming service, which is expected to launch in 2019.

user226528
I don't get it. What's "burgeoning" and "over-the-top" about Disney's streaming service?

user226528
Do these so-called journalists, who can't spell "burgeoning" correctly, not know how much data computers can handle?

user226528
Or is it something I am missing?

user226528
Yes to what?

user226528
9:44 AM
Them not knowing computers well or me missing something?

@FleetCommand that was a joke
When someone asks a question with multiple options contained, just respond 'Yes'

user226528
@djsmiley2k Oh, please, I've spent years whacking this habit outta myself because ...

user226528
... because Wikipedia... Screw it! I'll start answering with "yes".

yes?

user226528
Yes!

9:46 AM
Also adding question marks to random words is a fun one
YES!!!!!!!

user226528
It's a damn shame. I improved myself. That's not bad thing. Wikipedia went to hell. That's the bad thing and quite frankly, its own fault.

yup

user226528
So, are any of the people who frequent this room Americans?

Well @bwDraco lives in NYC afaik
Also I think... maybe @allquixotic
and the one who's avatar is an orangutan who's name escapes me
@fixer123? something like that

user226528
Hmm... I'd better be careful not speak about Trump in front of them. Or... maybe they actually voted for Trump.

user226528
10:09 AM
I didn't know there is a TString.

user226528
I always used String.

wtf grrr
why ask me to do something
i give the 'wrong' result
then tell me i'm doing it wrong
....

user226528
You alright there?

@FleetCommand yes?

Yes!!
JKust wondering why my job seems to be, to do everything that needs doing, but only after someone who should of done it hasn't done

user226528
10:17 AM
So, in computing analogy, your job is like a compiler that permits TString, FString and GString but PString is not allowed because all pointers must be untyped, even though TString is part of the System.Classes.

user226528
Or maybe your job is entirely a descendant of the EException class, maybe EJobNotDone.

user226528
Something like this:

user226528
try
{
...
}
except EJobNotDone
{
  this.deferTo(djsmiley2k)
}

maybe, maybe
/me doens't know
I just seem to end up loosin time waiting for stupid things

user226528
!!/s/loosin/losing/

user226528
10:24 AM
Been there.

@djsmiley2k that sounds a bit like my old job ;p
Just that I'd refuse to do anything non computer related....
unrelatedly
> The Windows File Manager lives again and runs on all currently supported version of Windows, including Windows 10. I welcome your thoughts, comments and suggestions. There are two primary versions of the source code in the master branch:

@JourneymanGeek Fun!

10:40 AM
@MichaelFrank legit works ;p

ha, I downloaded it straight away as well.

user226528

that looks more modern

user226528
MultiCommander

11:24 AM
hey folks. Running into a weird issue here, I'm not sure where or how to debug. In the recent past I have noticed that majority of times (like 9/10 times), when I switch on the computer, the lights etc turn on, the fan rotates but it doesn't go beyond POST.

Once a blue moon when it does go beyond POST, everything works just fine. I'm not sure what's the problem. I've disconnected and reconnected all the wires, components etc, no dice. I've removed the GPU, swapped RAMs, disconnected my SSD/HDD and turned them on, nothing.
the system is a 5 year old system, running an i5 3470 with a MSI zh77a-g41 motherboard. I have a 1080 with a Season seasonic s12ii 620W PSU

I'd say bad PSU.
because I always suspect PSU's

hm
@djsmiley2k shouldn;t a bad PSU cause problems when load? This is only during startup

Load is highest during start up

oh, I see.

11:40 AM
spinnin up drives etc

11:53 AM
at least before SSD's that was the case
and I'd think it'd stil lbe, after even

12:11 PM
@Sathya I'd lean towards power supply too
that's around the point where PSUs start to fail, agewise too.

Thanks guys. Does it make sense to buy a replacement PSU and see how it works, or just take it to a nearby (well not so near...) Computer hardware store and get it checked?

@Sathya Most hardware stores wouldn't really do more than stick a tester on it at best
Its probably a waste of time.
I'd lean towards the replacement PSU

CPU?

(and lol. My system is the same age, has an upgraded video card, annnnnd I've been having odd startup problems too)
@Sathya ninja-fixed
we can blame my dyslexia

Haha
No worries, just making sure :p
Sort of thinking of using this as an excuse to grab the ryzen
But then again I look at DDR4 prices and forget about it

12:19 PM
lol
Same reason I'm putting off the next build
(well that and the job thing)

16GB going at $270+ ;/

and my current box has that much
and cough. I've been drooling over threadripper so....
I'm looking at roughly 3k SGD for a reasonably usable system with that?
Bad time to go intel (specter/meltdown mitigations) ...

How much of a PSU upgrade, would you need for a Ryzen system?
If it's not huge, replace the PSU with the thought of replacing everything else a bit later

probably none at all
you could probably go for a fairly identical but more up to date PSU.
I'm running a 980TI and a 3770 on a 620w M12II
amusingly my big problem now is.... the onboard sound dosen't work

@JourneymanGeek time spent floating around between sender & receiver?

12:28 PM
@Zanna more or less yes
or time spent in the transmission media.

thanks :)

You'd see lower latency on say fibre than cable or ADSL
Even with the same speeds

yeah I wanted to replace the Mobo/CPU/RAM because I thought it was a motherboard problem

PSU is definately the smart replacement here
This is roughly the worst time to do an upgrade IMO :)

@JourneymanGeek yeah I have 16GB of DDR3 as well, bought for less than 150 for sure

12:31 PM
ya

@JourneymanGeek yeh I will try to rough it out for a bit, work is keeping me fairly occupied and got myself a switch recently

I'm hoping things get more sensible by june ;)
Starting a new job tommorrow so hoping to build a buffer and wedge it in between getting settled in and certain other life events ;p

woo! best wishes!

my friend started his new job today
will be interesting to hear what he makes of it
tho he whines about everything so ;D
@JourneymanGeek And then it's c's fault anyway.

I still don't know where it exactly is ;p
I'm going to my actual employer's client, not their client tommorrow

12:44 PM
Hahaha
I'm going to the support company of one of our clients
(Don't ask!)
(I don't wanna, nor do I see the point).

Man it's so hard to resist a ryzen build, but the cost of building a new system from scratch makes it a pretty bad idea I suppose

Yay, I got enrolled in the CCNA course again
After just five years

@JourneymanGeek All the best!

XD
@HackToHell ram prices are supposed to drop soonish

1:00 PM
oooh why so?

and I have enough of a working PC that I can pull parts initially

@HackToHell sup :p

@HackToHell well, I was under the impression it was a short term supply glitch?

I've got a short term supply glitch, of the drugs that keep me sane :(

(also, I need to build one soonish cause my favourite mall for such things will get redeveloped + lol... My parents are trying to matchmake me (again) and I'd rather get the PC done before all that works out ;p)

1:02 PM
I hear the ram price is more of cartelization

erf
and I kinda want a bunch of it depending on the build so...

so we're goin to a client site tomorrow
to do some install for them..
fine, i can deal with that
except, no one's ordered cables etc in
so now I've gotta find them, from our 'stocks', test them. etc

@djsmiley2k that sucks
you can hold up short term or... is it going to be a royal pain in the arse?

@Sathya yo :D
@JourneymanGeek Ah it has held up for a bit of time now I guess

Someone please tell me if I did something wrong here.... and the edit history where I tried to help

Q: Finding files with no extension? (Windows)

computationalprinceso i have some files on my hdd that have no extensions whatsoever and its very hard to find them manually cause they are the few hundred files out of thousands in a folder... does anyone know of a cmd or powershell command or windows explorer search advanced query syntax to find them? P.S. Pimp J...

1:13 PM
mesa wants to build a home NAS for around 200$ :D

But then the answer was accepted so I'm confused and jusst curious what others think
Nevermind, I think a mod fixed it.... sorry to bother
Thanks @Sathya

What are good alternatives to Amazon,for purchasing books?

Instead of paying a couple grand for this course I'm being "paid" to take it

For buying books I mainly use bookdepository.com (new) and abebooks.co.uk (2nd hand).

1:43 PM
@AndyK ebooks or hardcopies?

heh, if its the former, there's an excellent resource that one really shouldn't recommend here ;p

There are lots of guides with links for free computing and programming ebooks

@ToxicFrog hardcopies

@ThatBrazilianGuy By employer I presume?
Me too, for this £3k course I've gotta take :O
makes me nervous

2:00 PM
@djsmiley2k He actually lives near Baltimore, MD.

@djsmiley2k Yeah. I'm not sure if it's a special agreement between Cisco and my employer, who's a learning institution.
@djsmiley2k Why? Does your performance on it impact your career in any way?

@ThatBrazilianGuy hmmmmmmmmmmmm maybe

o/

Mine doesn't because being either demoted or promoted involves tons and tons of red tape. Actually there's no such thing as a promotion, I only get a new position by doing a new admission process.
The only "shortcuts" are being placed at a team leading position where I get extra pay; being paid to be a teacher on online or offline courses; and "salary brackets" where we provide proof that we have 90+ hours of approved training and they raise our salary by 5% (IIRC) every 18 months

2:30 PM

I didn't see them as two people leaning on a tree at first
I saw it as some weird robot face, with their heads as eyes...

good morning

Good evening

I'm so tired. Stupid drugs

OMG DRUGS

I think that works

3:21 PM
cya guys

I can't edit now @JourneymanGeek :D
how weird, as I copied it from my browser.

GMail uses facial recognition on profile photos as well.

@djsmiley2k FTFY

Home from Cornwall y'all

3:38 PM
welcome hoem

Thank you :)

Any storms don there?

Nope- was glorious yesterday (shorts and tshirt weather); though it was cool this morning, lots of fog patches up the A30/M5 but cleared up by M6 or so
Sunny here too at the moment but was chucking it nary an hour ago
And not quite warm enough to don the shorts and tshirt except maybe indoors :P
Anyone celebrate Easter this weekend? (Orthodox-style)

Bit of funny a bit earlier in my FFXV session:
> Ignis: The coeurl acquires charge from particles in the air. If you see it seated on its haunches, stay back.
Prompto: And what if we don't?
[cut to Gladiolus, who is downed by the coeurl's blaster attack]
Ignis: You die.
Before Ignis even says it, Gladio goes down.

;)
how you finding the combat?

3:46 PM
SelfDemonstratingTrope :P

@djsmiley2k Fun, albeit a bit faster-paced than I'd like.
It can be hard to read the enemy when you're swarmed.

Yah that's true
I found I never felt like an expert of the combat tho
You could try wait rather than active timer? I've no idea how it actually effects it tho :/

I'm already playing in Wait Mode for the most part.

4:23 PM
I've started playing Final Fantasy VII last week. Only 25 years late.

4:51 PM
haha, I am playing Tomb Raider

I still play nethack and NHL 94!

5:10 PM
Anyone running pihole + OpenVPN? I've set it up according to GH wiki but clients on the local network can't query pihole's DNS
I have a feeling this is because it's exclusively listening for a VPN-based query, but my OpenVPN-fu is weak
Naha, sneaky optional LAN+VPN section, you say

5:30 PM
@bertieb I am running them on a rented server.

@ThatBrazilianGuy I sorted the LAN+VPN issue- it's pretty cool :D
I like the shiny dashboard web interface
Quite nice to have ad blocking available on phone too (sans rooting/futzing) just a VPN away

6:11 PM
Oh G-d. I dump aswered an easy question again to the point are coming in.

Hmmm
So my phone works then lol
Laptop must be playing up
nope, heh my backup killed mah connection D:

6:30 PM
Any Powershell experts here? I need to figure out what exception an error message is, so I can catch it, instead of stalling the script

catch all the errors, print them out as is, knwo what you caught?

Can anyone walk me through WinHTTracker quickly?
I'm new to it, and the following post has never been answered in a way that is clear to a n00b -- me)
2
Q: Can HTTrack download a subdirectory?

warspykingI found this really useful tool HTTrack online and I'm wondering if I can download a subdirectory, instead of the whole website. For instance, instead of downloading www.example.com and all it's subdirectories, I'd instead download www.example.com/sub/directory and all it's subdirectories.

specifically, I want to DL unc.edu/courses/2006spring/ecol/145/001 and its sub-directories, but I want to NOT download anything "higher" (i.e., unc.edu/courses/2006spring/ecol/145 or higher in the directory)

@theforestecologist Did you attempt to read the manual? httrack.com/html/fcguide.html

@Micha. Hmm no. I had seen the how-to guide on their website and assumed that was the lone bit of instruction
@Michael Wow. This program is WAYY over my head -_- . I don;t even understand where to type in all the code they're mentioning in the manual. I just see a box in the program's window that says "Web Addresses: (URL)" ...

9:00 PM
That manual is probably the command line mode.

must be :/. Would you be able to point me toward help for the non-command-line approach?

httrack www.example.com/subdir/ -D should grab everything from below ~/subdir/.

ok. Where do I typ that in? (i.e., how do I "open" the command line in the program)?
(I've checked all the menu options for anything mentioning "command line " or "mode")
...is hTTrack different from WinHTTRack???

WinHTTrack is the GUI.

ah.
got it
do I have to dowlnoad them separately? (I still have not found the command line part of the program)

9:07 PM
No, httrack.exe should be installed under: C:\Program Files\WinHTTrack\httrack.exe
or Program Files (x86) if you downloaded the 32bit version.

ah! Found it! :)
ok, so now if I type in
httrack http://www.unc.edu/courses/2006spring/ecol/145/001/ -D
I should ONLY get info associated with that subdirectory and all of its subdirectories?
(because this website has WAYY too much data/stuff for me to make a mistake)

Make sure you specify an output location httrack -O c:\website\output <url> -D

ok thanks!
is there a way to check to see how large this download will be?
(before downloading it)

Gimme a sec, I'm just testing it :P

thank you, Michael

9:14 PM
I've been through this before in chat, but it's not a tool I've used ever before ha!
I think you want the following: httrack -O C:\output http://www.unc.edu/courses/2006spring/ecol/145/001/* -D
However, it doesn't do anything here as I am behind a proxy and it won't let the app through.

haha well then thanks for helping me out.
ok. so the * is important?
and does order of the code matter?

The * will get everything under 001/ and the -D will tell it to only go down from 001/
The order matters in the sense that the path after -O must be the output path.

ok
last question: you say the * does everythign down from 001/
will this approach avoid doing everything above 001??
(because that's where all the immense amout of data is)

that's what the -D is for

ok great
thanks!

9:21 PM
Good luck!

so it's asking me for other info in the command lin window
do I have to enter all that first, or can I simply copy my command line?

Oh yea, just paste the whole thing in one go
If you run httrack first, it'll ask you a bunch of questions

ok
is there a way to paste? :p
or do I retype?

right click > paste

hmm doesn;t seem to work
(the right clicking, that is)
ah, nvm, I see I have to right click the top bar on the window, not the window screen itself

9:26 PM
Weird

so one more question for you (that I've come up with since I read some more forum posts)
will this process download pages from external websites?
(I don't want this btw)
@Michael so my command line must be different from the one you see. It's asking me to fill in a bunch of info(that coincide with the info form the GUI)

I think that gets covered by the fact you specified a URL

In other words, it won;t let me just simply add one code line

Otherwise you could end up downloading the whole internet

right 0.o

9:31 PM
are you running cmd.exe?

Are you on Windows?!

i'm running httrack.exe
I'm on windows

Windows... 7, 10?

windwos 7

9:32 PM
Okay, so same here.

do I open the windows command line to do this?

(not the httrack.exe)

Just Shift+right click in the directory that has httrack and "open command window here"

ohhhhhh
I NEVER KNEW YOU COULD DO THAT
(which explains why I went the win+r > cmd route I got an error

9:34 PM
Yea, you'd need to add it to your PATH if you wanted to do it that way.

super
It's running!! :D
wonder how long it takes....

Let me know along with how big the output is. :P

DONE!
9KB :p
...not sure how to open the website...
theres nothing in the folder -_-

ha
Check the hts-log.txt file
You might also need -w or -W or -g
  w *mirror web sites (--mirror)
  W mirror web sites, semi-automatic (asks questions) (--mirror-wizard)
  g just get files (saved in the current directory) (--get-files)

yuppp....the hts.log.txt file is FULL of errors/warniings

9:46 PM
Can you pastebin it?

if you tell me what pastebin is :p

pastebin.com
