This sums up some of what I was feeling around the consent thing I posted earlier

@ToxicFrog Like all fanfiction, there's a number of good ones, there's a number of somewhat chauvinistic power fantasy ones, there's a number of "creating relationships out of whole cloth" ones, and there's a lot of willful misinterpretation of canon characterization.

There's a surprising amount of "hey, Dumbledore is actually a secret Dark Lord masterminding the entire plot in order to take over the world".

Which is like... Dumbledore's entire storyline is revealed to be that he almost turned into a BBEG but flinched when he looked in the mirror.

I've read one HP fanfic

It was a fanfic version of the last book written by someone who got tired of waiting for the last book and so wrote their own

I like it at least as much as the real thing

My issue with a lot of HP fanfic is that they try to make things... more. Like "the power he knows not" is inevitably some kind of actual ancient magic power fantasy thing or that "The Master of Death" is an actual thing with relevant powers (although that stuff is actually kind of amusing in crossovers when done correctly).

When in the end, "the power he knows not" is just love and the ability to care for other people and the Deathly Hallows are likely just especially powerful magical artifacts and you don't become a literal god by collecting all ~~the Pokemon~~ three.

Sometimes, I like it when things are understated and there's no world-changing reveal or plot development. Like the recent Doctor Who Christmas special. There was no "actually, the Doctor didn't kill everyone in the Time War" and it was relatively low stakes.
