@Tinkeringbell I wasn't planning to respond to your comment, but I think I need to, just to be clear: In no way did I intentionally write a duplicate question, just so I could post an answer. My question is authentic, based on a real experience from a few nights ago. You (and someone else, too) continue your campaign of belittling new users in this community, all the while wondering why there seems to be no progress in community-building. — D.Hutchinson 41 secs ago

Hello peoples
I have a question on QM if one can be so kind as to assist me

+1 I was about to suggest this answer - if it's so difficult then you should be doing (or could contrive to do) "training hikes" between now and then, make sure they come along and both you and more importantly, she, can assess her fitness. She may surprise you. — colmde 1 min ago

Akash, to do well in science, one must get used to waiting long times for answers
Like Higgs had to wait how many years to confirm whether his boson was real
You don't know of doctor higgs
Peter Higgs proposed a particle called the higgs Boson in 1964, and he wasn't told he was right until 2012
He subsequently won the nobel prize a year later for phsyics
commonly referred to as that indeed
that is a theory of gravity my friend
it doesn't explain magnets unfortunately
Ok
Why don't we see hippopotamuses hiding in the bushes?
Because they're really good at it
@JohnRennie will you please assist with my QM question

@Kenshin what's the question?

@JohnRennie, I understand that in QM, a quantum state's observables won't be time dependent unless the system is a superposition of energy eigenstates, is this understanding of mine correct?

An energy eigenstate is by definition time independent, so the observables cannot be time dependent if the system is in an energy eigenstate.

11:38 AM
@JohnRennie, I thought an energy eigenstate is an eigenvalue of the Hamiltonian
which just then happens to be time independent

@Kenshin correct. Eigenstates of the Hamiltonian are time independent.

ok, so then
Einstein says that time is what clocks measure, and one could say that clocks are systems that are not time-dependent
Thus @JohnRennie, coudl we say that the uncertainty in energy of some quantum states is what allows time to exist

If we have some system that is not in an energy eigenstate then we can use the energy eigenstates as a basis to describe the system i.e. our wavefunction looks like: $$ \Psi = \sum_i a_i\psi_i $$ where $\psi$ are the energy eigenstates.

where uncertainty in energy = states that are in superpositions of energy (that is, not energy eigenstates)
@JohnRennie, speaking more philosophically tho, if all states were pure energy eiegnestates, time wouldn't be measurable and in some sense could be argued to not exist. It is the existence of energy uncertain states that gives us our clocks for which we can then measure time correct?

So when we say a time dependent system is a superposition of energy eigenstates that's true, but what we're really saying is we can write any random state as a superposition of energy eigenstates.

11:42 AM
yes I understand that

@Kenshin You are mixing up time and the flow of time

how so

Q: What is time, does it flow, and if so what defines its direction?

John RennieThis is an attempt to gather together the various questions about time that have been asked on this site and provide a single set of hopefully authoritative answers. Specifically we attempt to address issues such as: What do physicists mean by time? How does time flow? Why is there an arrow of ...

I'm just thinking of time as a parameter
in the same way as space

I went to great lengths to explain the difference here. Have a read through and see if that helps.

11:43 AM
I think that if no rulers existed, and all states were independent of spatial coordinates, one could argue space doesn't exist
@JohnRennie, I will read it, but I ask you to coonsider my thought that time can only be detected because our universe contains wavefunctions that have uncertain energies
If our universe didnt have any states with uncertain energy, if all energy in the universe was well defined
then time wouldn't be measurable
as we would have no clocks
So it is interesting to ponder that uncertainty in energy gives rise to time

@Kenshin the flow of time can only be detected because our universe contains wavefunctions that have uncertain energies

@JohnRennie yes indeed
isn't that interesting?
Because much events are represented in terms of time and space
so both of these quantities are important to humans

@Kenshin Not really, no. In time independent systems the flow of time doesn't have any obvious meaning.

@JohnRennie, of course, because it is time independent

@Kenshin pretty much all of modern physics has been the discovery that what seems obvious to humans doesn't have much relevance.

11:47 AM
lol
It is fascinating to me, that it is UNCERTAINTY that gives rise to the appearance of time's flow
I haven't really read this anywhere
but it is logically deducable from QM
@JohnRennie, I've now read your link on time/flow of time, and I can say I am aware of all this already. I don't believe my concept applies to the subjective flow of time, but even applies to time as being simply a parameter too.
My concept even applies in the block universe where time doesn't flow at all

3 mins ago, by Kenshin
It is fascinating to me, that it is UNCERTAINTY that gives rise to the appearance of time's flow
Sounds to me like you're talking abput the subjective experience of time flowing

nope
I can reprhase
It is UNCERTAINTY that gives rise to systems changing over a time parameter
My concept is this, suppose there is a parameter of the universe, for which all states are constant over all variations in such a parameter. Since the universe is all encompassing by definition, then we could easily say that such a paramter is useless and could be deemed to not exist.
So if all quantum states in the universe were time independent, then we could easily just do away with the concept of time all together
now the reason states are not time independent, is thanks to some states having uncertain energy levels
So we can therefore thank the existence of uncertainty in energy levels for the existence of time itself.
--------To summarise, if there were no uncertainty in energy levels, then time would be a meaningless parameter
@JohnRennie my logical is undeniable correct?

I think you have things the wrong way round
Time exists, and since it exists we can define rates of change. A rate of change of zero is a special case.

the existence of time gives rise to uncertain energy levels

You're saying that states with a zero rate of change are more fundamental than time, which is the wrong way round.

11:57 AM
well @JohnRennie, I agree your interpretation works too. But I think it may be like the many interpretations of QM. While you prefer your interpretation, it gives the same predictions as mine
So both interpretations may be kept in mind as it may provide guides for generating new physics

I think you've stopped talking physics now. Feel free to continue on the religion SE.
2

is Many worlds interpretation of QM religion lol?
Richard Feynman in one of his lectures said to consider all possible interpretations of physics, as each may help guide future development

Feynman was notorious for talking bollocks at times

We currently think time is a given, from which we can deduce "energy", and this works well in classical mechanics. In QM however, energy coudl well take the seat, and time may be a consequence of such uncertainty
I think our reliance of time being more fundemental than energy is just a consequence of humans working with classical physics before discovering QM

@Secret I had a quick question (3 minutes) if you allow...

I am currently quite free as I have took my bath. What's the question?

@Secret Bromination of N-Methyl anniline, what's the major product according to you?
I feel that it should be the trisubstituted product where Br is present at all three positions o,p and o
Because I have this reaction from Clayden's book:
And because $\ce{-NHCH3}$ is very similar to $\ce{-NH2}$ I felt that it should be at all three positions in its case too
Steric Hindrance prevents ortho completely?

1:07 PM
I suspect purely electronically, the reaction will be the same as the aniline case, except much faster (since you have a methyl on the amine which has a lot of electron density to donate to the pi system)
As for sterics, I don't remember if a methyl group is bulky enough

I think your answer could profit greatly from deleting the last part. It's very opportunistic to think like that. For some people there are things worth breaking relationships over, especially if they are not firm anyhow. There are also people that like being confronted and argued with quite intensely. I got one of my best friends by passionately disagreeing with him for an hour about his most favourite thing. The saving face, being kind, be careful not to anger anyone approach is not always ideal for everyone. — Raditz_35 1 min ago

@Clay07g I disagree, I think just saying "No" without an explanation would be considered rude. There is a large difference between lecturing your friends and telling them "no you should do this yourself". I think it would actually be more rude to just say "no" to a close friend. — Childishforlife 36 secs ago

Instead of, "You're right, [y] is very interesting because [z], but we were talking about [x] so can we come back to [y] later?" what about phrasing it, "You're right, [y] is very interesting because [z], after we're done talking about [x] can we come back to [y]?"? I think replacing "..but we were..." makes the comment slightly less confrontational, given that the sister is hypersensitive. A good answer, though. +1 — Don Branson 23 secs ago

"Experience or references, preferably experience": that was the impression I got from reading 3 well-upvoted meta answers on this topic: interpersonal.meta.stackexchange.com/a/1611/381 and interpersonal.meta.stackexchange.com/a/12/381 and interpersonal.meta.stackexchange.com/a/19/381 which note that it is often not possible to base IPS answers on references, and experiences are just as good a substitute.
