Q: Italic and bold don't work

OokerHow to "italicize" a word in an italic paragraph? That question doesn't italicize the words right from the edit panel, yet the bullets work. Why is that? Test: italic, bold

11:14 AM
@LateralTerminal I'd seriously consider flatly saying 'no'. And also, I'd seriously consider saying 'no' to being so far down the chain compared to the people who make the decisions

@Vincent great post!

1 hour later…
1:35 PM
@WELZ thx

I don't agree that it's a dupe, (in short) you are asking about min, not maximum

It's a way more specific question than what is treated in the Q&A I linked to
(which happens to be the same that is proposed as a dupe)
but I edited for clarity

@Vincent I would be careful with values below 50%
As they rasterize so their effect is more nonuniform than higher densities
2 100% is offcourse very uniform
but 25% has much less coverage than 100% so its more spotty
or grainy if you prefeer

1:53 PM
@joojaa for a signle ink, you mean?

yes
100% means ink ins everywhere
25 means ony on one of 4 dots
personally i would just print out a proof somewhere

@joojaa that is too expensive for me at the moment

You ct try to guestimate this with a inkjet of good quality

@joojaa doesn't 25% mean that there are as many dots as there would be with 60%, but they are just smaller?

no
in a inkjet maybe

1:56 PM
then I need to learn something about process printing
isn't the size of the dots what entails the percentage, rather than the amount?

depends on what you mean by a dot though
no dots are either on or of

@joojaa lolwut
I never knew that

a dot either has ink or has not

You are telling me taht this diagram is wrong

Bot on a raster level the clumps of dots that form a araster make a bigger superdot
A raster is not the same a s adot
a dot is the smallest adressable item for the printer

1:59 PM
ah, then it;s terminology that's in the way
I was talking about a raster point

So the things on your image tre raster hapftones

but back to the issue at hand--

Yes but my point is that 60% has more coverage than a 25%

you'd advise at least 50% for any ink in a rich black?
@joojaa yes and ink is wet :P

meaning that your black is more uneven in the lower value

2:00 PM
uneven on what scale, though?
are we talking exact, magnifying glass work here

depends on the printers resoultion

or something that a layman would notice?

hey @johnp, welcome back. (again)
Welcome @WilliamMariager

if its a 2400 dpi device with a stochastical screen then no i wouldnt notice

I'd appreciate an answer on my Q that inlcudes the high points you just hit on :)

2:01 PM
Hey @WELZ :)

@Vincent and then @joojaa would get to appreciate some rep :)

But if its a uniform screen on a 1200 dpi machine then it might show up

@WELZ exactly
and I wouldn't have to tell him 'don't answer questions in chat' :P
@joojaa I think I get it.

@WELZ hello!

@joojaa For what kind of printing? We don't get spotty unless we go down to 5%
or even lower like 3%

2:18 PM
@LateralTerminal yes but 100% 100% is a shiny even surface
the other clor not so much
But i have a very good near vision so i can spot it
@LateralTerminal aslo depends HIGHLY on what resolution and rastering method you get

2:32 PM
@joojaa Typically 150lpi we don't notice any breakout until 3%

at 150 LPI you wouldnt really notice it unless its in your hand and you apprasied it really close
But if its for a low end poster print on a inkjet that differnce might be visible

@joojaa gotcha. I missed the beginning context it doesn't seem to be in the chat? @Vincent you're printing some fun project or something? Sorry nosy :P

@LateralTerminal there isnt any context so im not assuming the printer is super quality
might be or might not

Oh i'm sorry I didn't see this

Q: How wet should a custom rich black be?

VincentIn recent jobs, I have skewed away from pre-mixed rich black formulas in favour of making a black that fits dominant colours in the publication. For example, in a publication with a dominant full magenta colour scheme, I used a pure magenta rich black (C0 M100 Y0 K100) and the results came out gr...

I mean its a good question but near unaswerable

2:48 PM
@joojaa how accurate is this wikipedia article on rich black?
Rich black, in printing, is an ink mixture of solid black over one or more of the other CMYK colors, resulting in a darker tone than black ink alone generates in a printing process. A typical rich black mixture might be 100% black, 50% of each of the other three inks. Other percentages are used to achieve specific results, for example 100% black with 70% cyan (C), 35% magenta (M), and 40% yellow (Y) is used to achieve "cool" black. "Warm Black" is 35%C, 60%M, 60%Y, and 100%K. The colored ink under the black ink makes a "richer" result; the additional inks absorb more light, resulting in a closer...
I ask because I don't always trust wikipedia

@LateralTerminal No I'm just trying to always match my rich black to the main colours in the idenity
this one has a grey / green logo so I want a rich black with a similar green sheen
These two were done with C0 M100 Y0 K100 and C100 M0 Y0 K100, respectively

3:10 PM
It's so rich :')

lol

Seriously it looks really good

thanks. These two are the main reason I'm such a fan of adapting my rich black formula

Can I ask what these were for without being too nosy? :P

it might not show in the picture, but in real life you can see really well that the black matches the cyan and the magenta
these are birth announcements

3:19 PM
Oh that's really interesting!

it's a pretty big thing in the Netherlands: sending an original and well-designed card to your friends and family when you got a baby
I have quite some in my portfolio, they are among my favourite projects
I'm working on another one at the moment, but that's not what the green rich black is for
This one was a blast to do, as well bakabaka.nl/monster-illustratie-geboortekaartje-tygo

3:42 PM
That does look fun :)
May I ask. Is the Netherlands really as amazing as I always hear it is?
@Vincent

@LateralTerminal depends on the aspect :)
it's pretty nice when safety and income are concerned
it's crappy in terms of weather, bureaucracy and cuisine
oh and we pay exorbitant taxes
Where are you from @Lateral

4:23 PM
@Vincent I wasn't going to talk about it because I like being anonymous. But I noticed these questions and I wouldn't mind more exposure to them. I live somewhere between these two places.

4:34 PM
But hopefully not for long when my lease is up

5:00 PM
@LateralTerminal I can imagine the desire to stay anonymous
I didn't mean to browbeat you into revealing your location, sorry
Just friendly curiosity. That's one of the other perks/downsides of being Dutch: we are direct and blunt in the extreme 😅

@Vincent It's cool! I'd probably care more if I had facebook or something but I don't have any social media except SE. So I don't mind sharing my rough location with you guys. If you come visit make sure you bring hazmat suits :P
@Vincent I like that :)

An edit went through on the title of this question and I think it has people confused
https://graphicdesign.stackexchange.com/questions/106122/how-to-remove-white-in-irregular-shape-photoshop-cc
I initially understood it as the OP is trying to remove the transparent pixels. I can see how someone who is not savvy with images thinks they could have irregular shapes...

greetings
@Emilie you could do a rollback and ask the OP for clarity

8:41 PM
@Emilie agreed, title is confusing.
Title shouldn't be overly broad or too specific, they should be somewhere in the middle. Where you can at least get what the question is about, but still need to read more to fully understand.
@LateralTerminal I think he just meant a general are (like a state is usually very anonymous yet still quite specific)

9:13 PM
@DᴀʀᴛʜVᴀᴅᴇʀ Thanks @DᴀʀᴛʜVᴀᴅᴇʀ, didn't realize rollbacks were easily accessible. I just did exactly what you've suggested. I can imagine that can cause problems. Do you ever get rollback wars?

9:26 PM
yes

@Emilie there's a whole tag for it on Meta.SE! meta.stackexchange.com/questions/tagged/rollback-wars

I once saw one with about 150, let me see if I can find it...

I am ready for @futurefonts. Launching today is a new platform for collaboration between type makers and users. Get fonts while they’re still seeds and give ’em the fertilizer to grow. Gutsy project from three smarties I admire. More info: https://medium.com/type-thursday/future-fonts-a-marketplace-for-unfinished-typefaces-1171f9ef67a3
If you're a creator that's NOT from the US, Canada, West+North Europe, Australia or New Zealand, respond here with who you are, what you do, & some screenshots, examples, or links maybe. If you are a creator who IS from those places, don't reply, and just retweet & explore this.

11:39 PM
@WELZ :-O Yea I don't want to be "that" person as they say. What a waste of time that must be!

If it starts, I'll be the other "that" person for ya :)

@WELZ I can be pretty stubborn... I'll try not to get in your way lol
