When did "Community bulletin" happen?
Though some of the items there are out of date -

Q: Weekly topic challenge 5772-25 (week of Tzav 5772): Book division

msh210This week's topic challenge is book division. You're encouraged to think of and post good questions on this topic. Topic Proposal I propose book division as a topic. Questions about dividing books into sections, chapters, parashiyos, aliyos, verses, paragraphs, pages, etc. I suspect there ca...

Q: New Community Bulletin box in side area

DragonLordI've noticed that a new "Community Bulletin" box is being rolled out network-wide: Can someone describe this new feature?

@HachamGabriel ping!

@ShmuelBrin It's the challenge that's out of date, not the calendar entry. chalk it up to Pesach vacation
When someone volunteers to become the fo-to person for the Parasha chat, I'll be happy to create a community event weekly, per that person's specification.

4:08 AM
@Jin Any idea just how impending graduation is?

Jin
@IsaacMoses Well, I'll be out of town this week, so not much work will be done. When I get back next week I want to present the community the logo, and some site design concepts
if no major design changes from the community, then we'll start the CSS conversion.
So I'm estimating either the first or second week of May
We typically launch/graduate sites on a Tuesday or Wednesday.
so I'm aiming for 5/8 or 5/9 to be more realistic.

@Jin Here's my big idea for graduation: Online Launch Party including: Live chat, maybe even with an audio component; "ribbon cutting" in which someone (you?) counts down and then flips the conversion switch, and everyone F5s, oohs, and aahs; and a panel discussion including maybe someone from the site, a web-savvy rabbi, and Joel on something like the role of online fora in Torah study

@HodofHod which day?
8th or 9th
ah cool. my son's birthday is on the 7th.

either way, (8 or 9) it's very timely!

Jin
I'll be in NYC this week to meet up with the rest of the SE folks.
I work remotely from home in NC.
I'll talk to the CHAOS team about possible site promotion ideas.

4:16 AM
@Jin Cool! Keep in mind, I celebrate my birthday according to the Hebrew calendar, so the Gregorian date changes from year to year

Jin
@HodofHod I didn't know that. interesting! There's a Chinese calendar too, but modern people don't use it anymore, except for the Chinese New Year date.
it changes every year

Sunday, May 6 is an auspicious date - Pesach Sheini, which I happen to be a big fan of

@IsaacMoses hey, hey hey... wait a second... :D

Jin
isn't May 6th a Sunday?

@Jin That's what I said! (now)

Jin
4:18 AM
oh sorry didn't see the edit.

@Jin It was ~simultaneous with your comment :)

Jin
Anyway, I think it'd be a good idea to think about the other Jewish community sites you participate in, and how we can tell them about our site's graduation
and when the time comes, I'd be glad to create banner graphics etc if you need me to.

Wed night - Thurs May 9-10 is Lag BaOmer

@Jin If you do a countdown to the switch, would you have to include cachebreakers so that people don't have to hard refresh?
@IsaacMoses I'm so excited!!
:D

Jin
@HodofHod yep. of course.

4:22 AM
I think I knew that about the Chinese New Year...

yeah, many traditional Jews celebrate their Hebrew birthday

Jin
although there had been times when i forgot about the cache breaker.

@Jin I just remember that when the switch to the new beta theme happened a couple things were left out
Feb 28 at 21:01, by balpha
ah, chat appends a cache breaker
But my knowledge of web design is weak to say the least, so I don't really know what I'm talking about.
:)

@HodofHod ... and I finally understand <spolier elided>

Jin
@HodofHod oh you were right about that one. and thanks for the Judaism.se community to beta test our.. beta theme.
i fixed a bunch of bugs before launching it for the rest of the SE sites.

@IsaacMoses Ah, yes. My not so creativeness at work... ;)
@Jin Thanks for letting us use it first :)

Jin
4:32 AM
I think I'll print out the logo later and frame it
i'm not just saying this, but I think it's my favorite one, out of all the logos i've done
I know it's not completed yet, since we talked about making it letter leafed. even as it is now(as shown lastnight) I really like it.
^ fake mockup, but i think it'd make a nice lil art piece too

@Jin My wallet, sir, is out.

Jin
@IsaacMoses you may not need to :) I'm already thinking about the designs for the top user swag later
we typically do a tshirt, sticker, and some SE branded pens and markers

@Jin Whats this?? Top user swag WHAT?

Jin
but I can see me doing a small 8x8" print using the logo art
@HodofHod after a site graduates for while, we send a swag package to the top 2 pages of users as a small token of thank you.
but normally it's a few months into the graduation before we do that.

@Jin I edited, because the phrasing confused me at first, sorry :)
@Jin Oh, ok. Cool!

4:39 AM
@Jin Why stop there? Go whole lamb and make a whole illuminated Haggada!
2

@IsaacMoses Laughed out loud!

Jin
our printshop does great work, they handle all of our swag productions.
I just send them the designs, and they make it. they do a lot of different items too. I think they can do poster print. I'll have to check.

@IsaacMoses @Jin, it's a challenge! The Kol Menachem haggadah won the Benjamin Franklin award for interior design. Can you do better.......? ;D

Jin
It'd be nice if they can do a small letter pressed poster. It'd look pretty in a frame.
@HodofHod ha I doubt it. I do mostly web stuff, but with this job, I've done quite a bit of print design work too.
I've spent quite a bit of time last week on jewfaq.org/index.htm

@Jin So, no Haggadah? <sniffle> Shucks! ;)

Jin
4:44 AM
i assume that's a good resource?

@Jin An excellent one. It's the first one I recommend to people looking for intro material on Judaism.

@Jin Not sure I've seen it before, but looks good to me

Jin
great. i read quite a bit there. it was very informative to me, and written in a very straight forward style too.

cool. I'll have to check it out

Jin
@HodofHod I had to look up en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haggadah whoa. i love that type of print work!
in fact, i was just watching youtube.com/watch?v=Nkfcgr5OeGw today.
wait wrong link
hmm did i mess up my bookmark?
oh in that video, you may be interested in 12:30s
the book design shown in the video on kolmenachem.com looks interesting. it feels more modern to me.

4:57 AM
@Jin Interesting. I wonder if that's out yet? Let me see if I can find an image of a page from the haggadah

@HodofHod Check your flags.
@HodofHod Thanks

@DoubleAA I've deleted it.

Jin
5:11 AM
well I'm off to packing for the trip, then bed. Good night!

@Jin good night, safe trip!

@Jin Good night! Have a comfortable trip and a safe stay in New York! :)

@HodofHod Now I get it :)

Q: Sefirat HaOmer tag

ه هRight now the sefirat-ha-omer tag is used for both the mitzva deorayta of counting the Omer, as well as the unrelated period of mourning that happens to coincide with these days. The two are (at least on a peshat level) completely unrelated. Perhaps they should be differentiated?

Q: How do we review and clean up our tags?

Monica CellioWhen asking questions I usually take some reasonable guesses on tagging and then, most of the time, somebody comes along and adds tags that I didn't know existed. Part of this, at least for me, is that we have a lot of tags -- more than twice as many as the most "mature" site I participate on, E...
