@WELZ it should be on topic from what I can tell
we handle a lot of ae stuff though I'm not sure if anyone will be familiar with that particular random plugin

12 hours later…
6:11 PM
I need to track a camera's motion but I don't have any tracking places - truthfully I have a TV with a bad refresh rate and I need to replace the footage from the tv and we forgot to put tracking dots on the screen - so I either need to fix the refresh rate somehow in post or replace it in post

6:33 PM
replacing is your best bet
but I'd expect a TV to be easy to track. It has well defined corners that should be fairly contrasty
that should be pretty easy for a tracker even without tracking dots
it's also worth noting you don't need to track a camera's motion for this, just the motion of the plane of the TV, which is much MUCH easier
@JustinKaz what tooling do you have available?

@AJHenderson After Effects and the entire adobe suit
I won't even talk about me having avid on this machine... :D
The contrast on the tv edges matches the contrast of what the TV is shooting so it's pretty bad - and the natural reflections on the border of the TV are a problem so the tracker works for 10 frames and than dies across the screen - it was shot low light for that dramatic look
so no contrast anywhere - can you describe this plane thing - I'm thinking your saying to match it on the line of the tv - right
AE has been solving the camera for what seems like days
(I had to mask out the TV because it was following the shot movement of what was on the tv... shame)

@JustinKaz hmm, I'd try Fusion's tracker personally, but I also use Fusion Studio and have their more advanced trackers. How steady is the shot?
so a camera tracker is going to try to build a point cloud to work from to solve where the camera was, but it's only really helpful for injecting 3d elements. (And you could probably place a virtual video in the 3d space, but it's not very efficient). All you really need is to know where the plane of the TV is so that you can put something on that plane and that's far far easier to solve
worst case scenario, it shouldn't even be that hard to rotoscope it unless your camera is really unsteady
unless things move in front of the tv
then you are more or less hosed
unless you feel like spending a lot of time on it

6:49 PM
yep actor walks in and sits down and head moves in and out of TV frame - which we wanted but.... So your saying I'm hossed

if you can post the clip somewhere I can see it, I can give you a better appraisal, but if you have to replace what is on the TV and the actor moves in front of it and it wasn't a fixed color, then you are looking at rotoscoping any frames the actor is in front
maybe something like a motion blur might manage to help
as that would blend one frame with the previous
it'll negatively impact your footage overall, but it might be a compromise that ends up workable
depends how bad the flicker is

7:04 PM
We going to have to reshoot it - way to much work in post
It wasn't as easy as a TV in the studio lol
it was someone's random Living Room
so Premiere is now opening my dialog boxes off in no mans land - where no moniter can see it
what can I do?
I'm trying to import an AE file and the dialog that pops up is gone and I can hit the ESC button and that works but...
Window + Arrow key worked
@AJHenderson but thank you for being the voice of reason - I am going to have to blame you for the reason we have to reshoot "a professional told me that it would be more time consuming in post" LOL
or just use the word rotoscope or frame-by-frame in a sentence... I'm sure people will cringe. I did when you said it.

7:36 PM
@JustinKaz that sounds fun. I use a dedicated video card (decklink) for my monitoring and only have one actual computer monitor so I don't get that problem
@JustinKaz and yeah, shooting on location is always fun. The number of shots for welcome home season two that are partially compromised because of location constraints is not insignificant

I can't tell you how much Christmas stuff we had to take down... I felt bad for the wife... LOL - at least we shot around the Christmas tree.

8:09 PM
@JustinKaz lol, yeah
@JustinKaz I should probably point out that I'm a software developer for my day job, but I have been doing video production as a professional side job for over 15 years
and do have a degree in it
but yeah, baring any long shot techniques that might work because of some particular factor you haven't mentioned, reshooting is probably the way to go if it isn't too difficult
what are you guys shooting on?

8:52 PM
C100
Wish it was a red
but at least we are using a ronin gimbal

@JustinKaz nice, and atleast you aren't in DSLR world. That helps
I'm shooting with an Ursa Mini (I really like BMD's ecosystem for cost to performance ratio)
hmm, that's funny. We are probably very similar actually. I work for Datto on the Autotask side of the house
not sure if you are familiar, but both are focused on the MSP space and bringing enterprise kinds of IT to small and medium businesses
I do BOL and DAL framework and architecture
mostly in C#
