@MichaelFrank yea that RAM is overpriced. that mobo, too, but the H-series isn't out yet

@Bob I might change the mobo, I just realised that one only have 4xSATA ports.

cgi-bin? cool

Bob
12:07 AM
(skip past the SODIMM ones)

Stop!

HAMMERTIME!

Bob
@MichaelFrank ?
@allquixotic lol. staticice is awesome for AU and apparently NZ too
most of the smaller pc stores are on there

huh...

Bob
not quite pcpartpicker, but ... yea

12:10 AM
Those price were last updated last year... They might have been having a sellout sale.

The Northern Hemisphere temperatures are dropping and the Gregorian New Year draws close. Across Stack Overflow and the Stack Exchange network, thousands of avatars’ ears grow chilly. It’s the season to warm them up… with hats!

But not just any hats: in celebration of the 6th anniversary of Winter Bash¹, some of the most beloved hats from years past will make their triumphant returns to the Winter Bash stage for a repeat performance. We’ve switched up the triggers to ensure hours of hat-gatherin’ fun. (And if you poke around, you might find a few newcomers waiting in the wings to be discovered, too!) …

@Bob PCPartPicker actually supports NZ

12:38 AM
Okay, so PCPartPicker seems to think it'll all work together. I changed the mobo to an MSI model as it had more SATA ports for not much more price.

Bob
@MichaelFrank IIRC the CPU comes with a cooler

@Bob Oh, that's handy... Nobody says whether they do or not.

Bob
@MichaelFrank Generally the K models don't but the others do (as of ... Skylake gen?)
previously, they all did

Other than that, the list looks okay? Nothing I've gone full retard on?

Bob
you seem to have forgotten a PSU + case :P
biab

12:49 AM
I was just gonna put it together on the bench................
maximum airflow etc

Bob
1:00 AM
@MichaelFrank not a great long-term idea
@MichaelFrank actually not... the stock CPU fan is great at forcing air through the heatsink but doesn't move much air
you end up with a 'cloud' of heated air over the board
and relying on convection
a well-designed case (usually with case fans) has a specific airflow, usually front to back
and the PSU fan also helps with that airflow

Yea, I have a case and PSU already. :)

2 hours later…
3:07 AM
Goodnight, sweet Prince.

no sound from laptop hdmi port
checked every dialog and option and tab in settings and device manager

That sucks... Both of you...
@CoderCat Does your laptop's HDMI port support sound?

not sure
it better for how much I paid for it

What video card? Does it appear as a sound device as well?

nvidia geoforce 840 m

3:18 AM
Windows 7, 10?

10

New APU on the horizon? Take with a grain of salt but this is very intriguing: reddit.com/r/realAMD/comments/7j0yrd/…

there is an unknown device in devmgr

The audio output switcher is a little hidden in 10. Click on the speaker in the system tray, is there a drop down menu with your graphics card? Normally called "HDMI (Geforce....).

Jan 13 '16 at 3:14, by bwDraco
Just thought about this: What if a future AMD APU has HBM on the processor package?

3:20 AM
iirc. and when I update the driver it gives an error
nope no menu

So just the default "Speaker..." label then?
Do you have the Nvidia Experience software installed?

yes and no

What about the Nvidia control panel?

yes

There's normally audio options in there as well.

3:23 AM
hold on

holding on

reinstalling it
ill have to get back to you with this one

4:23 AM
@MichaelFrank That looks like the train station displays here on a hot day :P

1 hour later…
Bob
5:52 AM
Two repcaps and 1/4 of the way to a third \o/

Bob
how the heck is epic only a silver badge?
> Zero score accepted answers: more than 5 and 20% of total
yea uh... that's probably impossible at this point :P

6:09 AM
ya
some of those are.
@Bob legendary... is hard ;p

Bob
O_O this guy has entirely too many downvotes for a question that doesn't seem that bad...

2 years on...
is the users in question still around? ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek huh?
half a month, more like

....
oops?

Bob
and his other question seems to have attracted a lot of downvotes too
:\
and the suggested dupe isn't even a proper dupe
wow
I really feel sorry for him
the SU community has treated him unnecessarily harshly

6:16 AM
well
the other question could use a fixup ;p
And if you do, I'd be happy to reopen
Its a little hard to read

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Perhaps it should be closed, because of the lack of model details as David asked for. But it's certainly not a dupe of that other question.
And at this point I'm pretty sure we've scared this guy off.

Well, opening and reclosing maybe... but ugh
that seems pointless too ;p

Bob
yea
it just annoys me seeing this
think I mentioned last time that it's fairly recent too. Within the last 2-3 years maybe.

also tempted to answer that task manager question. With a gif ;p

Bob
People are far too trigger-happy with downvotes and closing vs actually putting effort into trying to understand and fix the questions.
It's seriously put me off the main site.

6:24 AM
@Bob I think that's a problem with a lot sites :(

Bob
I feel like people who downvote/close as a first response probably shouldn't even be on a site dedicated towards helping others.

@Bob meta this.
;p
(seriously - I actually kinda agree here)

Bob
@JourneymanGeek This does sound familiar :P
I've actually written a few meta answers around those lines recently-ish
but the question... bleh. not too sure how to put this into words

no real rush - its an ongoing thing no?

Bob
true, it just seems every other month I catch one of these
and I'm not on main that much so I'm sure there's far more
perhaps we need to be reminded that we're dealing with humans on the other end
@JourneymanGeek Heh. gif = upvotes? Maybe if it were -5 you could get that badge...

6:32 AM
oh hell yeah

Bob
but that's so incredibly unlikely :P

>_>
looks over at MSE, where 7 of my 10 gold badges are reversals ;p

Bob
O_O
well, I guuuuuess
meta being meta :P

Bob
of the three reversals on SU, two are deleted questions now

6:35 AM
I tend to post very popular, slightly sarcastic answers to unpopular questions? ;p

Bob
and another one
why on earth did this get a downvote?
It's succinct. It's grammatically correct.

Its terse? ;p
I do think what happened to the poor dear might be useful here tho

Bob
@JourneymanGeek hm?

the mac lol

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Perhaps, but hardly dv-worthy :\
...once again I'm starting to suspect we just have a downvoting troll or bot somewhere.

6:47 AM
or people with excessively high standards ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Honestly, I can't see any way to really improve that question. It's a perfect little question.
bleh
I should go home
and play with the label printer :D

Bob
62mm 'compatible' tape is cheap
29mm 'compatible' tape is less cheap
12mm 'compatible' tape is expensive
:\
(and of course official tape is ... not cheap)

o0
so get the wider one? ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek yea uh... I miiiiiight have gone overboard and gotten more 62mm tape than I can use in a decade :P
they come in 30m rolls

6:57 AM
lol
0_0

Bob
for like $6 ea (compatible)

LABEL ALL THE THINGS

Bob
or $45 ea official
@JourneymanGeek only problem is most of the labelling I'll be doing is on cables, and I want to use flags
which really should be 12mm

Appparently this is a thing -0-0-

Bob
I suppose I could do wrap labels, but they make the cable stiffer and seem to come off easier :\ chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/118?m=41693302#41693302

7:00 AM
that looks cool
That was what I was actually looking for!

Bob
@JourneymanGeek ya, I was surprised they had those options predefined

also I think that's the style they used at dneg when whoever set it up did the cabling

Bob
@JourneymanGeek the die-cut one also looks fancy. I have no idea how it works :D

Bob
it's like a flag but the bit that goes around the cable is narrower

7:02 AM
that looks wide

Bob
@JourneymanGeek 62mm is wide. very wide.

Bob
wide enough I could do most of my labels rotated 90 deg
but 62mm long isn't quite enough for all but the shortest flags

Bob
@JourneymanGeek oh, I found out what's different between the QL-570 and QL-700

7:12 AM
0_0

Bob
to look sleeker, the 700 drops the catcher tray that folds out on the older model
sounds good, right? who doesn't like labels flying everywhere?
I might have to get a 3d printer next... make a tray

Bob
@JourneymanGeek oh, so that's what happens when it rains. the salt gets washed away

and next thing you know you end up with a small fab lab

8:10 AM
let the editing of really old questions BEGIN!
@Bob and then it gets cold again.... and freezes

Bob
ugh
32 today, ok
going to be 37 tomorrow
I think I'm gonna melt

32...C?
Dear lord
my brain is automatically doing bps to Mb per sec conversions without me thinking about it
I've been here TOO LONG.
ATM0.1-atm subif Interface Speed changed from 1004000 to 981000 bps
wtf is up with the text here
maybe my eyes are going bad

8:45 AM
Morning all. I have 3 monitors. One of them is miss-behaving. When I resume the machine from sleep, one monitor turns on, then turns off. If I turn the monitor on and off, it powers on (and shows the desktop as expected) and then goes black (the light remains main to show it has power). I can still drag windows onto that monitor but it's just a black screen. Any gut feeling if the issue is cable, GPU or monitor?#
I know I need to test it properly, plugging the monitor direct into the output of a laptop or similar, just curious if any one had any immediate thoughts

@MyDaftQuestions gut feeling says monitor
if it shows up then goes off.
Is the monitor giving any indication it's gone into standby mode? (Messages about no signal etc - led light status changes?)

Cool. It's a cheap one, was about £70 new 5 years ago.... but I could do with a new excuse to buy a GPU as the current one plays DOOM in slow motion.
No sign of the monitor failing @djsmiley2k - no standby mode, the light stays on etc, the only thing is the black screen

lol
I'd suggest the backlight has gone then, is it lcd?

I think so yes. The odd thing is, some times after turning it off and on a few times, it works fine (until PC goes into standby again)

again, back light issue, but very much definately an issue with the monitor itself (or maybe cable)

8:48 AM
cable is cheaper still.... Yes, I need to play with and have enough bits to test it but it's always nice to hear other views/thougths :)
Will this get me band... for UK, 11 days, 15 hours and 10 minutes until...... :) :) :)
CHRISTMAS!!!!!!

1 hour later…
10:25 AM
@MyDaftQuestions Probably a different cause, but I have a dodgy monitor that won't turn back on right away if it is turned off. If it's been off for 20 minutes (say) it'll turn on grand, but even a reboot is enough to make it refuse to turn on. It eventually comes to life after a short while.

@djsmiley2k no antialiasing

@MyDaftQuestions I have another one that blanks itself often under Windows, but I think that might be due to the inline HDMI switcher being just fractionally off being able to do 2560x1440

@FMLCat seems to only be that page though.
how to fix D:
ok it's not just that site, and I've gone through the clear type settings
I think it's because I started this session via remote desktop... and now I'm logged in locally? D:

@Bob wraps aren't that bad but I prefer flags for readability
@djsmiley2k yeah I remember some bugs about that

aurgh your edit reordered the responses, confusion!

10:41 AM
I edited nothing!

o_O
my client is weird!!
@FMLCat ah restarting chrome fixed it \o/

hmmmm stupid monitors

Stupid browsers too
definately sounds like a warm up issue with the backlight @bertieb
@bertieb If you can open the case and take a look, see if the backlight is off after a reboot.

@djsmiley2k The whole monitor goes into standby / off, and won't turn on again for 5-20 minutes

When you put the LCD in backwards
@bertieb maybe it's waiting for the backlight to come on before it 'powers up' ?

10:54 AM
@djsmiley2k Could be! Sounds like more disassembly than I'm comfortable tolerating though; if I break it, I don't have the cash on hand to replace it

stick a LCD screen on the front of a old CRT, with a lightbulb behind it ;D
@bertieb ah yes, then don't touch as long as you can live with it.

@djsmiley2k Aye, can tolerate it for now :)

11:07 AM
@djsmiley2k urgh chrome, should have guessed.

Bob
11:22 AM
@FMLCat yea, I prefer flags, but the 12mm tape costs a lot more :(
lol, the cartridge they sent me for the 62mm is a 62mmx100mm cartridge, not 62mm continuous
stupid printer refuses to print continuous on it
(cartridge being the plastic carrier and the paper roll itself being continuous)
luckily, it's just a series of holes and flats that activate some pins ... turns out a label is actually really good for blocking the holes, and a toothpick can poke out the correct ones :D

Ave
@JourneymanGeek kind id
Kind od
Of
There's some other sruff too
I don't know if I can talk about it here though

@Bob o_O

Bob
@FMLCat hm?

these hats look fracking hard to get

Bob
The 62x100 cartridge had extra holes on the top left and bottom right

11:35 AM
@Bob o_O
That's ghetto

Bob
lol
it works!
I've got a refillable 62mm continuous cartridge coming but it'll probably get here friday

I was thinking more hand held label printers cause they're super useful when you're out and about

Bob
@FMLCat I have that too, and that's how I labelled my cables last weekend, but they're a pain to type on and hard to lay out to make proper flags
a lot of manual spacing by adding space characters

Like, round the back or a server room or on the roof
@Bob how complicated are your labels?! :-o
I've never had to type more than something like 03/408 or "Roof" and "Power"

Bob
@FMLCat well, I try to avoid the words wrapping around the cable to the other side
that kinds ruins readability

11:37 AM
Ah

Bob
which means I need to space it enough to keep it on one side
turns out this printer has a cable flag mode that auto-gens labels with text printed on both sides

Or not care, like I did

Bob
true

Labelling things like the cat and fronts of servers was easy. Labelling cables with flags I didn't really mind if the text went round as long as it could be read with one hand

Bob
@FMLCat yea the one last weekend is kinda cramped and hard to roll the cable around

11:40 AM
@Bob the cat or cable?

Bob
@FMLCat the cat cable

the cable cat!

lol
you are bossing that hat @JourneymanGeek

@Burgi The only problem with that hat is, I don't need another hat ;p

11:54 AM
heh

@Burgi yes wtf

@Burgi I've gotten... 3 unique ones so far

just me then... :(

lol
the mod hat is actually pretty easy to get
as is this is fine (just go back and delete 10 old comments from the last year)

@JourneymanGeek I don't think I have 10 existing comments from 2017... I don't post a lot of comments.
From the rufus changelog:
> LAST EVER RELEASE WITH SUPPORT FOR XP AND VISTA!

12:01 PM
as a target or as a supported ISO?
not that it matters. I have my magic box ;p

@JourneymanGeek Cat mark one with CAT5?

@JourneymanGeek cat1 with cat5

Movie recommendations?

12:17 PM
Flash dance (1983)

@Hennes Something newer?
Also, that isn't on netflix

Haary brown? (not sure which date that is on)

@Hennes Not on netflix :/

Ah 2009
Harry Brown is a 2009 British vigilante action-thriller film directed by Daniel Barber and starring Michael Caine, Emily Mortimer, Jack O'Connell, and Liam Cunningham. The story follows Harry Brown, a widowed Royal Marines veteran who had served in Northern Ireland during The Troubles, living on a London housing estate that is rapidly descending into youth crime. After a violent gang murders his friend, Harry decides to take justice into his own hands. The film also features actor and rapper Plan B who, with Chase & Status, is also responsible for the film's theme music track "End Credits." Harry...
Aeon Flux ?

The Matrix, Donnie Darko

12:19 PM
@Hennes yus
@djsmiley2k Donnie Darko isn't on netflix

wtf
fail netflix, fail.

@Hennes good film but not really something you appreciate till you're a bit older IMO

Not a film, but... Does netflix have 'yes minister'?
Yes Minister is a Political satire British sitcom written by Antony Jay and Jonathan Lynn that was first transmitted on BBC Two from 1980 to 1984, split over three seven-episode series. The sequel, Yes, Prime Minister, ran from 1986 to 1988. In total there were 38 episodes, of which all but one lasted half an hour. Almost all episodes ended with a variation of the title of the series spoken as the answer to a question posed by Hacker. Several episodes were adapted for BBC Radio, and a stage play was produced in 2010, the latter leading to a new television series on UKTV Gold in 2013. Set principally...

@Hennes Oh, I have the book!
Will check in a bit

12:36 PM
lol I think I've managed to talk people into calling winterbash going down grinching ;p
@Burgi got 2 more hats - werewolf hunter and mad hatter for a handful of tag fixes

@JourneymanGeek -.-

Woohoo so I sorta fixed my phone
Basically forcefully charged the battery up to 7% and managed to get it to boot up.

user226528
12:51 PM
O.o

user226528
Is that even possible?

And indeed it still thinks it's -23'c which is why it won't charge. But otherwise seems to work
@FleetCommand yes. Just connecting and disconnecting it at the exact right time about 200 times did the trick.

user226528
Minus twenty three degrees of Celsius?

user226528
I didn't know phones don't work in that temperature.

FIGHT CLUB IS SUCH CRAP

user226528
12:53 PM
By the way, there seems to be Unicode character for degrees of Celsius: ℃

user226528
@rahuldottech The film?

@FleetCommand yes

@rahuldottech of course it is, if you talk about fight club.

user226528
@rahuldottech I would have said "I love you" had Hollywood not totally ruined this phrase. I hate it too.

user226528
The only film worse than Fight Club is American Beauty.

12:57 PM
@FMLCat @FleetCommand I watched it for some 15 minutes or so
And I have no idea why it's called a classic
It makes absolutely no sense to me.

@rahuldottech I actually preferred the book

yesterday, by Burgi
do i lose geek points if i say i have never made an ethernet cable?
@Burgi Even I've made one -.-

If I disconnect the battery it thinks it's 24.7'c or something and tries to charge it. So the charging circuitry is fine and it seems the broken temp sensor is in the battery itself
So I've ordered a replacement battery.

1:16 PM
In just 2 days, the @FCC majority will vote to repeal the nation’s #NetNeutrality rules. Today I will offer my colleagues an alternative proposal to #SaveNetNeutrality. Your thoughts?

user226528
@rahuldottech Well, I've never made a whole one. It's always been just one end of it, be it a keystone or an 8P8C jack.

@FMLCat I guess there's no obvious way to disconnect the temp sensor

docks half a point from Kushan

user226528
@JourneymanGeek From Kushan? Somehow, I don't think you are talking about the race in the Homeworld video games.

@FleetCommand that's part of the joke ;p

1:28 PM
@rahuldottech You could go for the Mad Hatter and Too Cool. They are easy to get.

@djsmiley2k not that I can tell. There appear to be 4 connectors on the battery but only 3 are marked: +/- and "ID"
Disconnecting "ID" might work, or I could just wait till the replacement battery arrives
Then again being a third-party non original battery the replacement probably just has ID disconnected anyway

user226528
You know what's the worst thing that could happen for a person intent on watching p*** for the first time? He watches The Ambition of Oda Nobuna by mistake.

@FMLCat yeah, was gonna suggest just trying to stick something over it
well the other one could be a 1wire sensor?
electrical tape is magic ;)

1:51 PM
nice... this guy's congressional district is responsible for serving thousands of oysters, crabs, seagulls and rockfish with his massive cut of the Chesapeake Bay population (which is 99.9% non-human organisms)
Dear Congressman Sarbanes, I am an anemone currently residing on the shell of a crab at the bottom of the Bay. I want to urge you to ban all crab fishing in the Chesapeake. Sincerely, Ane

the sarbanes-oxley sarbanes? ;p

@JourneymanGeek his son, actually
the Sarbanes-Oxley Sarbanes retired

His constituency seems to include a little point bit that is a fraction of a bridge. What's that all about?

@DavidPostill I think that's the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel; it's a 4-lane (2 lanes each way) car tunnel with a toll that lets you traverse the south/south-eastern part of Baltimore by road without having to drive 270 degrees around the city or go through the congested inner city roads
it's been an expensive but ultimately successful project (far less over-budget than, say, the Big Dig in Boston) for decades
maybe he has a "point" there so he can have a say in its funding?
actually that's the Key Bridge
the Harbor Tunnel is the smaller one up north that's shorter
both the Key Bridge and the Harbor Tunnel are toll roads. I guess if he has "constituency" in his district over the Key Bridge he might have some say in its funding. So weird how the districts are cut that way though. Gerrymandering FTW

@allquixotic ugh. Our government made it an artform
