Another copyright question

We have 1 good law question for 2 dozen bad ones

I saw the title and I meant to click it after watching a video. From the title I thought it was about a lawyer simulator.
Sounded like a good idea :D
a "Lawfirm Tycoon" could be a lot of fun. (I cant make one due to limited resources but if anyone wants to please do)
I don't mean like the GBA game

The setting of Phoenix Wright with the gameplay of Papers Please

something like that. But less depressing than Papers Please :D
I seriously had to stop playing.

12:43 AM
Or a judge simulator
It would basically be a TV show though

But it'd be a lot more difficult to make fun than managing a firm + court minigame and jury selection.

And you need to give it a good name, the word "simulator" has a vad reputation
I'll have to go now, it's almost 2AM
Good night

@Charanor Sorry for the delay in posting the answer. I hope you're satisfied with it :)

1:12 AM
Hey all :)

@AlexandreVaillancourt It's no problem! :) Yes very satisfied, both with the answer and the solution!
Also hey all

I received a message from a company in Frankfurt yesterday. They wanted my resume.
Have anyone heard Janeious?

Mobile gaming company?

Yes. They are using Unity

1:21 AM
@whoo24 \o/!!

I think they are startup company... I don't sure I can work there for long time.

That sounds good for you :)

@Charanor Yeah, I think it was the best way to "satisfy" everyone :)

@doppelspooker thanks :)

Even if you don't want the job, it's good that companies are interested in you.

1:22 AM
@doppelspooker +1 it means you did something right when they ask for you and not the other way around

@Charanor exactly :)

Yeah. I've not updated my resume for long time. I'm updating my resume on this chance.

@whoo24 They have no product out yet. I recommend against it for someone who's starting in the industry. Especially if it involves you moving to a different country.
Unless they somehow send you a lump sum of money to cover the cost of moving to AND BACK HOME from that country.
Unless you live in Frankfurt already.

Actually that reminds me, are there some super simple programming languages (graphic preferred, but text based works as well) that can be used to teach young children? The next summer I'm volunteering to teach children about programming but I'm not really sure what medium to use :)

1:27 AM
@StephaneHockenhull Thanks. I'm living in Korea. So I have to move Frankfurt. Moving is not big deal. But I always worried about being back home.
I have to move with my cats.. I can't often move abroad.

@whoo24 It's not just the fact that it's a startup, Visa issues / governmental errors happen (speaking from experience) so you have to consider the risks of ending up with a net financial loss on the whole deal.

@StephaneHockenhull Thanks. It's nice of you :)

@StephaneHockenhull Scratch looks really nice! Although there's the slight problem that most of these children don't speak English very well (at age 7-10 they've just started English classes in school) but there might be a way to manually change the text. Thanks for the suggestion!
Ah it is available in my language! Sweet!

@whoo24 On the plus side, Frankfurt is roughly as expensive as Seoul so there's that working for you: it's not a big jump in comparison with getting a job in Seoul for day-to-day. (only moving costs)

But really keep in mind that work visas tend to "chain" you to your employer (it varies). If it turns out you have to quit or get laid off you may have to move out of the country.
So you want to make really sure that no matter what (reasonably) happens you'll come with a net gain from the experience. Both financial and personal.

1:47 AM
@StephaneHockenhull It is very practical advise! I will keep in mind! Visa is always problem in foreign worker.

@whoo24 Have you looked into working-holiday visas? If you qualify they're a great way to live and work in another country for a year, sometimes can be extended up to 2. And you're not tied to an employer.
You'll need to have a bit of money saved first tho to qualify.

@StephaneHockenhull I want to working-holiday, but I can't. I'm over 30 years. If I were less 30 yrs, I went to Canada right now :)

oh, I thought you were fresh out of school

@StephaneHockenhull Ha ha.. I wish I were fresh men.

2:08 AM
Ignore my advices then, you're old enough :D
HAHAHA

HAHAHAHAHAH

2:23 AM
hahaha
@StephaneHockenhull How did that spider get in there??

It must have entered through a vent hole.

Is the spider still living in the monitor?

Q: Should we make exceptions for questions about identifying specific software?

Josh PetrieIn the general case, questions asking for software to accomplish some task are off-topic here (and generally closed as "too broad"): answers are necessarily opinions and suggestions, and not really able to stand up well to objective scrutiny. However: should we allow for exceptions to this rule ...

It's still inside, yes. From my google search spiders don't seem to live past 10 days without water :( They can get it from preys but if there were any inside for it to feed on I'd probably see them.

I have a spider inside my cpu that is been living there for alot of time now
But it is a big one

2:39 AM
That a lot less distracting tho :P

lol true

4 hours later…
6:50 AM
@StephaneHockenhull Lol aren't you scared of spiders?
You should probably look up how to get the spider out of PC

user92578
7:11 AM
Not worth the trouble

stick the screen in the microwave
Firefox Quantum is out, UI looks a lot better than it has in recent years

user92578
oh I got that last week, laughed at the name since it sounds so much like Google Ultron

haha.
I read the rendering engine has been redone?
years ago I switched to Chrome since Firefox liked to crash and lag badly

user92578
Yeah I think so

7:45 AM
eh, Firefox freezes the OS cursor for a second when opening pages sometimes
Not a fan lol
yeah this feels horrible, sigh, ah well, will stick with Chrome

2 hours later…
9:43 AM
Do anyone know a software to create sound effects for game?

If you don't mind chiptune/8-bit, bfxr.net is nice
2

10:53 AM
@ChrisMcFarland Critters are basically unaffected by the microwave oven
When they're in a hotspot, they simply move a bit

user92578
11:10 AM
Yeah BFXR and SFXR are what I used

11:37 AM
@Hemlata I used my mouth and Audacity once. Evwryone thought they were provided by the sound guy.

11:53 AM
@AlexandreVaillancourt sound guy?

user92578
guy who makes sounds for a project

Yeah
I just wanna make some sounds for my game.
I know one software but its not free

user92578
so did you look at the programs Chris and I suggested?

It's called FL studio
@Tyyppi_77 Yes

user92578
and..?

11:55 AM
I just looked up, I didn't use it or downloaded yet

user92578
aight, I was under the impression that you didn't like those or didn't even look at those since it kinda seemed like you ignored those when you said "I know one software but its not free"

@Tyyppi_77 No lol.
Do you think it is a good idea to spawn obstacles or any gameobject and destroy it after sometime?

user92578
instead of..?

Back then I was just creating every gameObject and placing it by myself, but I think that's lame and randomly spawning them and destroying them after sometime is good idea

user92578
that's more of a game design question than a programming one, which is also totally fine, it just changes the question context

11:58 AM
Yeah

user92578
Do you want your game to have randomized elements or not?

Yeah I do
Bc it's easy to do

user92578
It's also important to ask yourself the reasons behind whatever you end up doing, i.e. is it because you're lazy, or because you want the replayability/challenge/whatever

plus If I will destroy them after sometime that will take less memory
Yeah

@Hemlata Yeah, we had hired a guy to produce the sounds for the project, but he had a hard time providing the appropriate feel for the game, and I was tired of the back and forth, so I hacked them in myself...

user92578
12:00 PM
Does destroying them mean leaving the world without any obstacles then?

user92578
It's really hard to give you feedback since you haven't told us anything about your game.

@Tyyppi_77 Yeah, bc the player will keep moving forward, so it shouldn't matter if I destroy gameObjects after sometime, since user can't see them

user92578
If this is an infinite runner it's almost a must that you generate the obstacles randomly, since otherwise you can't make it as long as necessary

Yeah, true.

@Hemlata Random/procedural generation is easy to do, but it can be hard to get it right...

12:02 PM
@AlexandreVaillancourt How is it hard to get it right?

user92578
Yup, it's easy to slam obstacles with a random X position into the world

user92578
Making the game still beatable and fun and challenging is the tough part

user92578
That's much easier to do with hand made levels, since one can playtest and adjust accordingly

Yeah, but I have some empty gameObjects and I can place them where ever I want and the gameObjects will appear on those locations only

user92578
12:06 PM
yes that's the trivial part of the problem

user92578
the location is the hard one

No, it's easy lol

user92578
aight hold up I'll draw you a diagram

Ok

user92578
So this is a top-down view of an infinite scroller

user92578
12:10 PM

user92578
There's no way for the player to stay alive here, since the programmer just slammed some random numbers together

Yeah I knew you'll ask something like that lol

user92578
yes, that was my point for the whole time

user92578
8 mins ago, by Tyyppi_77
Making the game still beatable and fun and challenging is the tough part

I already have a lot of space between my obstacle

user92578
12:11 PM
sounds like the game is too easy then

No lol

user92578
does it get harder?

Sure

user92578
does your positioning code account for that?

user92578
calculate the change in speed or so on

user92578
12:12 PM
is the game still beatable after 100 speed increases?

I mean I have enough space between them, so it don't block my player like the one you shared

user92578
yeah it's quite simple to make a "boring" procedural world generator like that

@Tyyppi_77 Nah, if I increase the player speed it's hard to play and by endless runner I mean my player moves automatically but it's totally different from endless runner. It's not even close to endless runner

user92578
13 mins ago, by Tyyppi_77
It's really hard to give you feedback since you haven't told us anything about your game.

I can't play my own game for more than 10 seconds if I increase the speed of my player

user92578
12:14 PM
doesn't sound great

Well it does haha. I already suck at playing games. I'm not very good but I asked my sibling to play it for me and he kept playing it for close to one minute
But others can play it for even more for sure

user92578
that sounds better then

Plus I won't make it that hard at starting
At starting it would be very easy then I will keep making it harder by time

1 hour later…
1:18 PM
@Bálint So... If I were to vote on your answer, on what clear basis would it be? Would an upvote be for "Yes, allow software identification, but we should have strict rules."?

user92578
I'm doing some super exciting financial calculation spreadsheets for my production economy course; I had massive trouble yesterday to even get started but now it's going relatively smoothly

user92578
This is pretty complex stuff already at this level, I've gained a lot of respect for accountants on this course

Sounds exciting :)
Use that for your next game!

user92578
accounting tycoon

user92578
which is actually just a group of people doing my taxes in a system where they check each other's work

1:30 PM
Hehe :P

user92578
but yeah for some reason I was under the impression that I liked doing excel stuff

user92578
that's definitely not the case anymore

user92578
also god damn this example company is doing really terribly

Is it like budgeting or something?
Excel data can get very confusing. I have one sheet for our budget and I'm lost sometimes.

user92578
calculating sale revenues, deducting material costs, handling money from investments and doing some accounting tricks to split up the investment over a few years and stuff like that

user92578
1:33 PM
the basics of business economy

Yeah, ok, I see (sort of). A nice exercise :P

youtu.be/KlMVd8FJE_A Artist told me it's gonna take time to build the aquaduct out of the prefab
actually underestimated my power :D

user92578
just copy paste to the nearest power of 2

why power of 2 ?

user92578
it's easy to do

user92578
1:46 PM
start from one, duplicate, duplicate, duplicate, duplicate, duplicate...

or write 20 linse of code that create the perfab and offset it correctly:D

user92578
lol yeah

like you know in the video I posted

2:39 PM
I just got the strangest insult thrown at me
I was literally speechless I didn't know how to respond

what did you get called ?

nwp
@Jimmy You are right. What I said seems to be completely incorrect in practice and I can't find a reference to it anywhere either. Apparently I'm going insane.

@Hemlata OpenGameArt.org has a full library of game sounds.

3:09 PM
@AlexandreVaillancourt Sorry if it wasn't clear, I'm with id requests, I'll add it

3:25 PM
I got called a milky bitch
Like what

are you white ?

@Charanor on the site?

@ChrisMcFarland I read that internally as "bee fuxer dot net"

4:21 PM
No not on the site in real life haha
Some random guy just came up to me and said that

4:46 PM
@Charanor He was probably crazy, or anti-white

nwp
Anti-white exists?

@nwp Mostly in South Africa, but yes
For every group X there exists the group anti-X

user92578
can you guys get to the main site?

nwp
Well, according to Luis CK you can't even insult white people.

@Tyyppi_77 yes

Q: Surprisingly, in SpriteKit game engine, "deltaTime" is not frame time?

FattieIn Apple's cocos-like 2D enginer, SpriteKit, they have what they call a custom field: testField = SKFieldNode.customField{ (position: vector_float3, velocity: vector_float3, mass: Float, charge: Float, deltaTime: TimeInterval) in print("deltaTime \(deltaTime)") ...

5:31 PM
Sipping my London Fog, thinking "Yes, I am a milky *****" ;)

user92578

I dont see Luis CK in this chat to be nice to

I dunno, he's the least molesty of the bunch

user92578
pretty sure we've covered that be nice doesn't mean just people in this chat or people at all

like, at least he's not diddling children

5:37 PM
that we know of

user92578
...

well, he hasn't been accused of diddling children
just of whipping out his privates in his own hotel room

Q: Does the Be Nice policy require SE users to "be nice" to people who are not SE users (e.g. public figures)?

NullI've seen users remark that it is not a violation of the Be Nice policy to insult people who are not SE users -- i.e. that users are only required to "be nice" to other SE users. Usually this is stated in order to excuse insults made toward public figures (like politicians). Is that true? Does th...

I mean, yes, in context of recent events, perhaps he's not exactly the authority on what behaviors are considered appropriate though

srsly

user4704
5:39 PM
Let's not talk about hanging other people, k?

@Jimmy I didn't look too much in to the Louis CK thing (I honestly wasn't a huge fan even before this) but thought it was interesting how much times have changed between the reaction to this vs the reaction to Bill Clinton being sharply defended with his whole scandal

I dunno, it doesn't offend me personally. But I can accept that people's standards are shifting
I do hope that people remember the distinction between "this guy is an ass," "this guy is a sleazy human being," and "this guy is actually a criminal" though

@Jimmy yeah, that's the part that scares me too

in my personal scale, LCK fell between 1 and 2, and Scoble was probably a solid 2 with possibly grounds for harassment charge

it seems like the reaction to any kind of issue, regardless of scale or severity is being the same in every case, which is a bit scary. I mean, it's a problem that needs to be addressed and there should be consequences for sure, but some of it does seem to border on extreme reactions too
but maybe that's needed for how bad things have gotten in that industry
but it's also somewhat of a scary standard in that it's really unfair because I guarantee that it's much more wide spread than the people who are being called out and there are people in the industry that I'm sure are far more worthy of having their careers destroyed
but I guess that also kind of goes with how polar our culture is becoming
you are either a hero or a villain with basically no inbetween

5:49 PM
well, nothing else attracts attention
everything is all caps now

and even an unfounded accusation can send you from one to the other with no help of reversing it
which is even scarier

Well, how is George Takei doing?
Without corroboration, or apology, and with denial it looks like it's mostly been handled as if it didn't happen in his case.

@Bálint Thanks :)

@Noctrine yeah, which is also a chilling effect too. If we crucify people who try to make it right and are immediately and deeply apologetic vs not caring about people who deny, it ends up setting a bad situation too

I haven't seen as much reaction, perhaps because there's a much smaller torch to carry there

5:53 PM
there's no disadvantage at this point to continuing the vicitimzation by calling people liars for coming forward

My point is that these people's careers aren't being immediately destroyed, by just the pure allegation.

@Noctrine yeah, I guess I haven't really seen enough of the fallout from the Takai accusations yet

There's another layer to that case too. With gay male hookup culture having been pushed underground for so long, different social norms developed in those circles.

@Noctrine yeah I agree that "fear of unfounded allegations" seems more prevalent than actual "unfounded allegations"

I think that celebrities position themselves (in part, by creating such a public persona around them) as being either hero or villain.

5:55 PM
but it's the "fear of airplanes" thing -- you naturally are afraid of things outside your control, like a random unfounded accusation

As such, with jobs that are entirely centered around going public perception - and deriving large portions of (relatively) large economic worth from public perception. Fallout from perception is going to be much larger.

also, if both parties are chilling in an aptment after multiple drinks, it's not that hard to get different readings of what the actual situation is. Not excusing the behavior, but "he-said, he-said" doesn't always mean one guy is lying

Also, we shouldn't be fooled - these guys are in a lot of cases considerably more publicly protected than just about anyone else in an at-will employment situation. Like in some cases these have been people who are in (what would generally be considered) direct subordinate roles.

@Noctrine like, say, a white house intern

Like even though Kevin Spacey had all of his shows terminated, he still had a contract that they HAVE to be pay him for. It was the same with Charlie Sheen on Two and a Half Men

5:59 PM
either way the whole situation is distressing to me. I'm glad that the issues are coming to light and people will be more aware of them going forward (hopefully) but at the same time, the way in which it's happening leaves a lot to be desired too

I mean, I'd agree with that. But that's so many situations in life, in general.

@Noctrine true
most don't have the bad sides quite so celebrated though
and maybe that's not the right word

At the very least, corporations will do an investigation (if only for their benefit). I think the hollywood blowback just feels a lot harder because their appeal is to the public, the losses are so high, and for so long celebs have gotten away with - just about anything.
The people I feel the worst about are the ones who don't have contractual protections.

@Noctrine I don't think these actors would have had financial difficulties even without current contracts, the trial-by-social-media is more about sending the message about where the line in the sand is

House of Cards being shuttered puts an entire production staff out of a job.

6:02 PM
I wonder how fungible those production teams are

Until future production rounds not very

I was imagining that Netflix probably needs to find new content to to fill its slots, and there's probably always a few prospective show pitches in queue

Remember when Conan O'Brien's show was cancelled in the middle of a season he used his salary to float them.

I guess maybe part of it is also the double standard of it all bugs me. There are plenty of horrible human beings in show business (or any business for that matter). Just because they did something 20 years ago doesn't mean they are currently behaving similar and unless it was actually criminal, we seem to have something of a kangaroo court of social media and reactions that goes around crucifying people on whatever the latest hot button issue is without looking at other issues that are...
just as bad
and often more current

well, it takes work to ferret out current issues

6:05 PM
Netflix overwhelmingly buys content that is produced - very little of their money (till recently - I'd imagine) has gone to developing content from start to finish.

@Jimmy yeah, but if someone comes forward with something old, if it's still current, it would give current victims a good reason to come forward and say "yeah, that's still happening"

I can't think of any solution to that other than "make it easier for current victims to come forth"
and public crucifixion of big names is a good way to make it easier

@Jimmy yeah. I guess I don't necessarily have better alternatives other than wishing people would be more moderate in their responses and wait for details and watching how people respond
but that's a problem of how polarized and angry people are now and I'm not sure how we fix that
we don't really work together to solve issues anymore, we just look for people to hang for it

That just sounds like showbiz honestly.

that isn't really justice

6:09 PM
Fast Content, Constant Content, Disposable Content
It's Judge Judy style justice

I mean, what would happen if all the mods one day decided to suspend anyone that did anything that even looked slightly wrong
it wouldn't end well
but we're basically doing the equivalent of that by angry mob
and/or fear of angry mob

don't worry, Google will eventually solve this problem by implanting a permanent livestreaming camera in your eyes. Then all false accusations can be objectively disproven by a third party

I'd need more examples of this happening to people who aren't public figures / celebrities before I could fully get on board with that kind of thinking.

/joke. I think fear of accusation is a bugbear

@Jimmy yeah, I mean, thinking about it more, I don't even think the false accusation possibility is the biggest issue anyway

6:18 PM
Yeah. Data I've seen suggests that unreported and unprosecuted harassment and assault are orders of magnitude more common than false accusations.

For each celebrity that has been called out recently. I could probably come up with 5 - 10 just people I've met that I've heard are sleazy, and still get by pretty well. People who, if you told the people around them what you've heard - they'd just nod, laugh, and brush it off.

I think it's more the whole targeting of specific hot button things especially when the reactions impact so many other people

Targeting of hot button things, celebrities, population that needs/wants distraction, or at least another new something.

@Noctrine right, and the reactions to them doesn't take the jobs of hundreds of other people out with them

the good thing with the celebrity stuff is that maybe your J. Random Sleazebag will see the controversy on TV and realize, "huh. maybe I shouldn't be groping random people"

6:21 PM
@Jimmy yeah
it is very good for awareness and making people think about it

@Jimmy And that is the primary reason why I think that this is a good thing.

I mean, we're still a ways off from the optimal situation
my friend was recently "hugged" by a random drunk guy outside a strip club. I'm guessing to him it seemed like a hug. To the girl, it seems like "oh my gosh someone just grabbed me fuckfuckimgonnadie"

Or well, very close. I think there is a strong win in removing the power and authority from people who have been shown to (especially repeatedly) abuse their power and authority.

I think if I was an executive behind a canceled project, rather than canceling the project, I'd offer the person the option to give up their profits from it as a donation to harassment prevention and tried to have a strong penalty without cutting off the compensation for so many other people because of one person's actions
I think that would still get the same impact and it would also help seperate out those who are sorry and those who aren't

That's just an assault charge - I think the situations that have been coming to light are pretty far away from that.

6:26 PM
it's one thing to say you are sorry, it's another thing to give up millions to let other people still profit from the work they did with you while you instead support trying to make sure the situation doesn't happen again

@AJHenderson I bet at least one executive thought about that, ran the numbers, and then realized that the negative press still cuts into their margins.

@Noctrine or was too scared to risk it

Or the secondary effects on the rest of the brand are too risky.

@Noctrine that would be why it's too scary to risk it

Corporate decisions got a lot easier to understand when I realized that tracing the money almost always leads to their exact decision.

6:27 PM
and why angry mob justice is dangerous

Yet it's the market they've created.

facing an angry mob, abandoning it immediately and entirely is safer than risking the entire business
I absolutely understand their reasoning
but that's why I'd also only offer a 100% donation option

It works out the same either way for them. No one remembers that they greenlit a Weinstein production - or that a person worked on one.
What they remember is that they dropped Weinstein - or walked away from him.

@Noctrine right, and if they came out with the project anyway, then they would be linked and remembered
or possibly might

And they can just expense the losses.

6:29 PM
I thought the immediate termination thing sends a stronger message. It's easier to understand "X did a bad thing. X is fired" than "X did a bad thing. X will now make reparations to Y organization while X's show is ongoing. Viewers are encouraged to enjoy waching X's character while keeping in mind that the network doesn't endorse X's beahvior"

and the damage of that would be catestophic. Better to write off a multi-million dollar loss
than gamble with the whole studio

Considering this is the industry that has been suspected/known? to create things because they can creatively account for the losses that they know they will generate. It's easy to say which way they are gonna go.

@Jimmy except the reality is "we just killed off thousands of people's employment because we were scared of a mob, not just cutting the one person who did something bad"
who cares if you enjoy a particular character if the person is getting no compensation for it since they did a bad thing

That's why they don't talk about that part. Group tightly to the celebrity - no one will think of the people who just have a job.

I do think the level of bad thing matters too though
Weinstein I don't think there was much salvaging
but Louis CK there might have been

6:33 PM
I wonder if Weinstein was involved in the decision to terminate himself.

@AJHenderson it muddles the morality meter. It's hard to like a character while disliking the actor

@Jimmy I don't know about that. I love Daniel Jackson but can't stand Michael Shanks

maybe you'd really dislike him without that role to mitigate it :)

@Jimmy not really, but I also worked with enough celebrities that I acquired the ability to differentiate someone's job skill from their personality
I suppose that may put me in a boat most people can't understand
interestingly, for musician's it is harder since their lyrics tend to come from who they are

well if you've met the person personally it gives you a different perspective

I haven't met Michael Shanks personally, but I've met enough performers to differentiate between their job and them
and characters are more the product of writers than the actor anyway
and either way, it's work, not who the actor is
where as in music, I've got music I like purely because the musicians are great people and I have music that I don't like anymore because the artists were not pleasant people
that said, I do think the bias towards liking the performance of someone I liked is stronger than the bias towards disliking the performance of someone I don't like. And it's also largely linked to who else is involved too I think
but I suppose there, as someone who does independent film work, I'm also much more aware of the artistic efforts of others
when dealing with a show
