@BenN It certainly seems that [System.IO.Directory]::EnumerateDirectories is faster, but it creates a list of strings, instead of a list of directory objects.
Correct
So I need to rewrite half my script to get it working ha :|
You can use [System.IO.Path]::Combine or Join-Path to bolt together the parent folder path and the child folder name
(or just string concatenate them, if you're careful with slashes)
I don't think I need to do that, each entry is a full path:

C:\Powershell\LOGS\test
C:\Powershell\LOGS\test4
C:\Powershell\LOGS\test5
As an example.
Oh, nice
00:09
So I guess I can just gci and get-acl each line to get what I need...
If you need a directory object, you can do [System.IO.DirectoryInfo]::new($path)
The DirectoryInfo object has a GetAccessControl method IIRC
Interesting!
> In, ‘Oh, wow, this is going to be stupid’ news, I received an interesting product announcement this week. It’s a USB C power bank with an integrated hand warmer. Just think: you can recharge your phone on the go, warm your hands in the dead of winter, and hope your random battery pack from China doesn’t explode in your pocket. I’m not linking to this because it’s that dumb.
00:58
So... laptop isn't picking up certain keystrokes from the keyboard. Figure the keyboard must be broken... Replace with the keyboard from a parts unit. The exact same keys are still not registering. :|
hmm
@Bob on one hand, memory usage is considerably more on the new server (but I have enough), on the other, it feels a lot faster, and I have the ram anyway.
though, seems to be mysql. I might have done some tweaks on the old one ._.
1 2 3 f j
All other keys work. o.O
Oh, and 8 9 0.
Bob
Bob
01:30
@JourneymanGeek probably cause of the ARC
it defaults (defaulted?) to 50% of RAM
if you're running out, you can tune it down
Naw, got plenty. Slightly over 8gb used
Ah yeah.
02:01
Got some errands to run. Just haaaaad to stop and video this.

1 hour later…
03:25
Out of curiosity, has anyone ever gotten this error message before at boot?
> PLEASE POWER DOWN AND CONNECT THE PCIe POWER CABLE(S) FOR THIS GRAPHICS CARD
(this is before the system even completes POST, at the graphics card initialization stage)
Yes, when I've forgotten to connect the auxiliary power cable for my video card.
Heh.
Not me, I did plug in the PCIe aux cables, but just curious.
(my card needs dual 8-pin and can require up to 360W peak power, although this is very, very unusual outside of test loads like FurMark)
Does it happen every boot?
Could be a weird power glitch and it just does't recognise that it has enough power for some reason.
Like I said, just curious. I wondered what would happen if one forgot to connect the PCIe aux power cables and found this.
nope but kinda makes sense since you'd be running GPU and storage biosen first?
03:30
(Astaroth is running just fine, thank you :P)
Speaking of aux power cables, CPU power is 8+4-pin on this motherboard; documentation states that the 4-pin is optional but the 8-pin connector must be attached.
How hard did you find it to attach the CPU power cables?
For me, it took a significant amount of dexterity to fully seat the connectors because they're located on the top left of the Crosshair VI Extreme motherboard and per best cable management practice, they had to be run through the back of the case behind the board.
There was a bit of slack left in the cable so it's definitely not taut but it felt like it was.
04:19
...so, there's a bit of a concern that came up while installing the screw pegs into the backplate:
(bottom left pieces)
Somehow, I put in one of the four in reverse and partially damaged the screw threads. There were not stripped, only bent, and I backed out before any metal had actually separated from either part (less than halfway). However, I'm concerned this might impact the long-term integrity of the backplate or pegs.
What are the chances the threads will fail completely during normal use, transportation, or maintenance (including the occasional removal of the waterblock)?
I doubt failure would occur during the intended service of Astaroth (the amount of force needed to completely break the entire thread is quite high, well beyond what is needed to secure the waterblock) but I'm not entirely sure. Your thoughts?
s/peg/standoff/g
04:37
@bwDraco I'd be more concerned about it getting stuck than breaking if it works
I backed out and installed it correctly without much fuss.
Note that the backplate is made of stronger metal, and the threads on the backplate side are coarser so it probably suffered less damage than the standoff threads.
04:50
I guess it's also hard to say without seeing what they looked like. I know that when I had similar damage on my wheel lugs, they went on fine but they wouldn't come off after
if the track of the thread is deformed it's more likely to prevent the thread being able to rotate and lock it in place
where as all the threads would have to be stripped to have it not hold
Now, the backplate is made of metal that isn't as malleable (apparently cast iron) as the standoff metal, so I seriously doubt the backplate thread suffered any significant damage. The standoff threads probably yielded a bit.
There was no abnormal friction or resistance when the standoff was properly installed into that thread.
The standoff piece is trivial to replace (it's part of an inexpensive retention kit), but not the backplate (would probably need to call ASUS to order a replacement part).
I wouldn't worry too much. I'd hazard you probably don't even really need all 4
Bob
Bob
@bwDraco very very unlikely to be cast iron
could be cast zinc ;p
or white metal.
Bob
Bob
cast iron is rather brittle and not even a great heat conductor
05:02
heck, could even cast Aluminium fairly easily
Bob
Bob
what's wrong with good ol' mild steel? :P
can't cast it
if it was stamped, mild steel is fine
What are the chances the setup will fail several years down the road?
probably pretty small
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek ...uh. pretty sure you can
though admittedly more difficult :P
anyway, backplates are probably either machined or stamped
05:08
@Bob if you heat steel enough to caste it, you'd probably burn off the carbon
@Bob, is there cause for concern?
and part of the point of steel is its ductile (malluble?) enough to be stamped and machined without cracking
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek ??? cast iron has more carbon than steel
....
@Bob nope
cast iron is mostly pure no?
Bob
Bob
05:09
@JourneymanGeek nup. >2% is cast iron, steel is usually <1%
steel is iron + carbon + other additives
Bob
Bob
cast iron is very different from elemental iron :P
._.
MY LIFE! SHE IS A LIE!
Bob
Bob
yea I made the same mistake a few years ago :P
ah! I confused it with wrought iron en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wrought_iron
... always thought it was the other way round
Bob
Bob
05:11
@bwDraco if there is, what would you do about it?
@JourneymanGeek the carbon is what makes things hard (and brittle) :P
I doubt the backplate suffered any real damage.
Besides, it's designed to withstand much heavier tower coolers. A CLLC waterblock is nothing compared to that.
So... I was doing some FurMark testing a bit earlier and the VRM read some 89° C at peak. This was on the graphics card's secondary (slave) BIOS with the power target set at the maximum 127% (~355 W) – is this cause for concern?
05:33
@bwDraco eh, furmark's kinda designed to be hard on your hardware
unless you have issues, probably not
FWIW this is an $850 graphics card we're talking about and reviewers have noted that the VRM is greatly overengineered (10+2 doubled phases) for the nominal 280W TDP.
Bob
Bob
> Your problem is so terrible, I worry that, if I help you, I risk drawing the attention of whatever god of technology inflicted it on you.

hm
superuser.com/questions/1265861/… This feels unclear ._.
but I kinda suspect its literally about all there is to maya
06:06
...EGVA Precision XOC is reporting 8 GB of VRAM usage on Assassin's Creed Origins (rendering 4K to a 1080p display, dynamic resolution enabled) o_O
GPU-Z (running in background) is reporting up to 8200 MB, which is more than 8 GiB (8192 MB).
Having 11 GB of VRAM pays off 😎
This seems neat but its overengineered somewhat. Which is rarely a problem ;p

@Bob there might be a reason for that
also the use of the pi 0 as a keyboard emulator

I know what that is.

user226528
Funny, I've never heard anyone ever using the word "terrorism" in regards to the gunpowder plot.
the americans have never won against terrorism
user226528
Exactly.
@FleetCommand why wouldn't you call it terrorism?
user226528
09:44
@Burgi Well, because no one will have any idea what I am talking about. Technically, it was bombing. So, yes, your run-of-the-mill terroristm.
user226528
@Burgi Also you said "States". I thought it is short for "United States".
i said "the state"
user226528
Let it go, pal. I know what you meant now.
user226528
Damn autocorrect. I write "let it go" and it turns into "let's go".

i suspect if you used cash you could go to several supermarkets and buy a crap load
you'd need a van to carry a tonne of fireworks though
user226528
Anyway, here, we have digital cards for purchasing restricted material, like explosives, combustibles, acids, etc. Every transaction is logged and later analyzed by an authority.
i'm not sure that would be possible in the UK
user226528
Why?
user226528
That's rather a small country too.
10:00
because tracking 20 million people all buying fireworks over a period of 5 days is a mammoth task
there aren't enough security officials to trawl back through the data

Computers can quickly process things, filter them, and flag important cases.
the UK hasn't got a good record with government IT projects

You need to check:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe
C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Acrobat DC
user226528
There is a Windows Installer cache too but I don't know where.
11:06
500MB, 2GB respectively.
mine is pretty accurate if you include the common files
user226528
The Common Files section is exclusively Acrobat's work, if you are on a 64-bit system. Because that's the only 32-bit app that Adobe produces these days without a 64-bit counterpart.
user226528
Mine is 953 MB + 1.32 GB
user226528
The reported size is 2.30 GB.

@Burgi Failure to capture marketshare that would make it worthwhile for Microsoft?
> Two to three years ago, annual sales of Windows Phones numbered in the tens of millions; now, they're close to zero.
they haven't released new hardware in 3 years
> Microsoft was sticking to its traditional business model of charging hardware companies for software licenses.

On one level, this decision was understandable, because it's a model that had proven hugely successful for Windows and modestly successful for Windows Mobile in the pre-iPhone era. But on another level, it was clearly a mistake: the head-to-head competition in this market wasn't iOS (because Apple doesn't license iOS to third parties) but Google's Android.

And while there were (and are) licensing complexities around the Google Apps and Google Play Store, the core Android operat

Intel's also got more experience integrating giant high bandwidth cache on-die (eDRAM) and frankly after they cut ties with Nvidia there was only one other way they were going to get competitive on-chip graphics

When the deal was signed a few months ago there were a lot of naysayers saying naaah a radeon chip on an Intel processor? Nevah!
they cut ties with nVidia?

> Intel is licensing AMD GPU technology.
The first product AMD is working on for Intel is a Kaby Lake processor variant that will positioned in the entry-to-mid level performance segment. It is in fact an MCM (multi-chip-module), and will not be on-die with the KB CPU. It is scheduled to come to market before the end of the year. I would expect more collaboration between AMD and Intel in the future on the graphics side.
As mentioned back in December, Intel's Nvidia GPU licensing agreement is to expire - and now it's just around the corner, the end of next month to be exact. There are no rep

When my last fixed-term contract came to an end: "We're gonna give you a pay rise and a permanent contract that you haven't asked for because we can't find anyone better"

And I don't mean "I reject low paying jobs in IT", I was never able to get any IT job in a normal hiring process.
But the hiring process in Brazil is utterly flawed and crazy.
Not only every job listing requires years of experience for trainees, they offer the lowest pay imaginable (or even less than that) and require a huge amount of knowledge.
They want a brain surgeon, for the price of a burger flipper
And they won't hire you if you're "overqualified".
When my wife was unemployed and went looking for a job she had to lie or they wouldn't even interview her.
I heard the same from other friends.
