00:00 - 21:0021:00 - 00:00

9:03 PM
Alright
So here's what we're starting with
Indiana Jones style character, one-on-one game for a podcast so more story driven and need to focus on the player's strengths
She's a level 2 druid, and wants to multiclass into Rogue for the rest of it

@Skathix And forgo taking more druid levels at all?

From what I understand yes

Okay, what have you so far?

The player totally designed the character from scratch, I won't tell her no if she changes her mind in the future
The story so far: She left her farm home with blessings from her father (who taught her to be a druid) and her mother packing her an explorer's pack with 2 broken kamas to be repaired

@Skathix 5e?

9:09 PM
She took the kama to the blacksmith, finished an errand in town for her father to get her a bit more gold, and then took up a quest to go get a cloak from an adventurer that was supposed to have delivered the cape already but hasn't been heard from.
@NautArch Yes
As she entered the cave she saw another group ahead of her that noticed her and bailed into the cave, at the end of the session she was discovered just after entering the cave

boop

@Skathix is there a RP reason to multiclass into druid?

Her father was a druid

sorry, imeant multiclass into rogue
and assume she has the required 13 DEX?

@NautArch Not yet, her mother was a famous hunter, so she's playing with her inspiration for it, but we're both aware of a need for a storied reason for rogue
So I've pitched around a few ideas in my head for her character's inspiration for it:

1) I'm giving her a chance to just roll her character like she wants and describing the more roguey-acrobatics-stealthy stuff into something that maybe she didn't know she could do, and doing it feels natural and good

9:14 PM
hadn't really thought of a rogue/druid multiclass. What circle did she choose?

Moon
Specifically she wants the ability to wild shape for cool theatric moments
And I was so excited about how into she was I thought it was awesome and in no way critiqued it because it feels interesting and cool

Awesome - thats the best reason to multiclass. min/max be damned!

Absolutely

That's something that works way better in Dungeon World though :P
(although the Druid is one of the worst-executed classes in that system, IMO)
And I only use "one of the" because I'm a scientific writer who uses weasel words whenever able.

Honestly @kviiri I'm going to be taking a few liberties and I know 5e pretty well so I just felt more comfortable playing to my strengths rather than learning a new system

9:17 PM
Fair enough

For instance, though the world isn't necessarily high-magic, I asked for a list of interesting and cool magic items that she'd want, several of them require attunement, but for the most part I don't think I'm going to really acknowledge the attunement limit of one person, I'm just going to try to not give her a ton of them
Cloak of Displacement is terrific for defense.
Amulet of Health for 'em tasty HPs and CON saves.
Bag of Holding if you don't have one already. Everybody needs a Bag of Holding.
Glamoured Studded Leather, 13AC + DEX, looks like any clothes you want.
Hat of Disguise. "Yes, Sir Guard, the assassin ran thataway -->."
^ Her list
Okay so Storyline wise I don't really know how to make this great, she wants to explore and adventure, her want from the game is: "Explore dungeons and ruins, find out histories of the lands, take the cool shit and sell it."

that's any PC class :)
does she know what type of Rogue she wants to be?

My usual go-to in such instances is that she finds something that draws a lot of unwanted attention and provides both the incentive to research the item's history and ample trouble. Eg. a ritual implement that a murder-crazy cult desperately wants, The One Ring, or something like that.
I mean, probably not everyone likes their characters being hunted down relentlessly by the villains, but I'm sure I haven't met anyone who didn't yet :)

on the dnd 5e facebook group yesterday people were nerding about how a lvl 7 moon druid + barbarian combo can tank upwards of 500hp in a day

Crazy how nature do dat.
@Skathix Do you have anything particular you need ideas about?

9:37 PM
@DForck42 Wild Shape is the most amazing thing in the game when it comes to tanking damage

Sorry work distracted me
@NautArch She wants to go thief
@DForck42 There was a DawnforgedCast about it a few weeks back, I think that may be where she got the inspiration to go druid she usually goes Assassin

@GreySage yeah, but I pointed out that in order for it to be maximized like that, you'd have to STAY in wild shape, so you'd miss out on any real rp opportunities cause you can't talk (unless you somehow have something to fix that)
@Skathix interesting

@kviiri @NautArch So what I'm looking for is maybe some suggestions for full campaign arcs, then maybe some suggestions for relics/items that she could go after that would be interesting and valuable but not game breaking
A la Indiana Jones

@Skathix Well, how do you find my suggestion above? I can come up with a more particular idea if you'd like.

@kviiri What can you come up with? I'm intrigued for sure
@BESW If you're around your input is always useful

9:45 PM
@DForck42 Meh, RP isn't for everyone, and certainly not all the time.

@GreySage yeah, and that's fine. I was merely pointing out that yes, it's doable, but it's going to cause you limitations. ie, it's not as OP as people were making it out to be, imho

@Skathix Lich Phylacteries are a classic of "items that attract unwanted attraction". Have her discover an item that contains a fragment of a powerful lich's soul. The lich will dispatch minions to assassinate the PC and retrieve the item. Upon thwarting or evading the first wave of attackers, the player and the PC will know the item is Serious Business.
For extra points, it's indestructible by mundane means, so it segues neatly into a research quest on how to get rid of the phylactery safely.

Hmm
Intriguing, I genuinely like the idea
I'd like to unpack it a bit, how does a Lich Phylactery work, how are they made, and what happens if the cult gets it back, more importantly, what happens if the Lich gets it back?

@kviiri one time, when I was playing with a dm that wasn't great at dming (different from the one I had been playing with recently), he had a lich that was protecting the thing. we killed him and took the thing, AND his phylactery. we didn't know what to do with it at the time, so we stuck it ina bag of holding, hoping that'd contain it until we could sort it out. we then ended up derailing his entire plans for the campaign because of a single choice we made. we never met again after that

@Skathix Generally, the Phylactery doesn't do anything unless the Lich 'dies', at which point the Lich's body regenerates near it

9:52 PM
@Skathix Well, by the book they're most commonly boxes bound with tape-like parchment containing runes, but can be any item (usually one that held significance to the Lich during their mortal life). If the Lich is slain, they can recover after a short time (a day, iirc) near their phylactery. In 5e monster lore they also need to periodically feed souls to the phylactery to stay sane.
If they don't, they degenerate into a powerful but barely sentient Demilich.

Interesting

But the idea of the Lich is about as old as time itself, so you're pretty safe toying around with the concept and the stats of the phylactery. They're primarily plot elements rather than mechanical.

The cave she's going into I had the idea of being an ancient druid temple
Recently there'd been signs of activity from the cave that had long been dormant

See 5e Monster Manual pages 48-49 for Demilich stat block and lore, and 202-203 for Lich stat block and lore.

I haven't put anything in yet so all of that is in flux rn, but apparently Priests can be liches as well

9:56 PM
I'll be happy to quote the vital bits though

Let me ask you this: Can Liches wait or do they HAVE to use their phylactery?

@Skathix Before they regenerate?

Do they HAVE to be evil, or is there a way to skew it so that they are more neutral
Yeah

@Skathix whatever makes sense in your world

hmm

9:57 PM
@Skathix By the book, they are said to simply receive a new body in 1d10 days. But again, it's more of a plot element than a mechanic thing and should be pretty safe to tweak.

WELL

@Skathix They really can be whatever you want as DM, but I think in-world they are evil

Okay
Well fortunately I built my own world from scratch which means Sword Coast be damned lol

@Skathix Regarding the alignment, they're usually considered to be evil and the Monster Manual has them as "any evil alignment", but it's not unprecedented to have good liches too.

@kviiri what's the Good equivalent of a Lich?

9:58 PM
@Skathix In 4e they were Archliches.

It doesn't matter

@kviiri I can think of at least 1 pop-culture interpretation of a Lich having a Good alignment

@GreySage do tell
Cool okay well this is an interesting plot device, we could go with a zelda-esque route of having 9 (or however many) Liches
And needing to either help/destroy them
But at the very least, having a druid flavored Lich is intriguing

@Skathix I can't for the life of me remember the name, but it was a web-comic based on DnD. In their world, wizards had found a way to become liches without destroying any one elses souls, so most of them did it. They called it 'early retirement'

@Skathix Typically in DnD lore, becoming a lich is so hard you have to deal with the Demon Prince of Undeath Orcus to attain the magic to pull it off. In 4e, the idea of the Archlich is that they were potent students of the arcane enough to become liches without help from Orcus, allowing them to preserve their moral integrity.

10:00 PM
Perhaps saying 'pop-culture' was a bit strong

Lol

@Skathix Tune the phylactery idea to whatever suits you. Everyone has their liches slightly different. Some liches have multiple phylacteries (eg. Voldemort, who is basically a lich despite never having been described as such in the Harry Potter books) and some can be controlled to a degree by possessing their phylactery (can't recall any particular examples off the top of my head but I've used this a few times)

It's an interesting premise

I think it's important to remember that interest and engagement in RPGs are different from the same in books and films.

SUP @BESW

10:04 PM
Everything the PCs do is automatically more interesting and engaging than what a character in a book or film would do, because of the "I'm making these choices not just observing them" quality of the RPG.
Many fantasy stories have boring heroes and interesting villains, because the villain tends to be more proactive and the hero just reacts to the villain's schemes.
RPGs don't have that problem.
Or at least, they don't have to unless you bring that trope to them.

I think RPGs often have the opposite problem, where no trouble happens unless the heroes deliberately seek it out. It makes evil feel rather distant.

The story is about the PC, not the villain. There won't be much in the way of "meanwhile, back at the evil castle" cutscenes.
It's easy to make a world that's imbalanced, or precariously balanced, and the PC's actions push things toward justice or injustice.
What I'm saying is, don't start with a villain and work out how the PC can get involved. Start with the PC and work out who or what makes a good foil for the PC.

Afk for a sec, brb

What character or crisis will complement or challenge the character's abilities, assumptions, allegiances, etc?

Well

10:09 PM
Push against the PC's starting state and you'll automatically get a character arc about how the PC responds to that pressure.

Right now, and I swear this is true, I had her name a nemesis and she picked Cabbage
So... I feel like that should come up somewhere lol

@Skathix Do it. It took 4 months to work in my wife's character's flaw of "Sour things" into the game, but when it happened it was the greatest thing ever.

Lol, this is my wife as well

For example, I had a campaign about a group of people who used magic and mad science to keep magic and mad science from running amok: Using Weird stuff so Weird stuff doesn't use you!

I need a whiteboard

10:12 PM
One of their antagonists was Elon Musk, who uses tried and proven (albeit innovative) normal science to fight back against all magic and mad science, which he perceives as inherently a threat to humanity.
Both parties want to keep the world safe from magic and mad science, but one uses those things to achieve that goal while the other opposes those things in the name of the same goal.
This automatically creates philosophical challenges to the party's default assumptions about whether their means justify the ends.
Another game I ran, the party just liked making friends with enemies instead of fighting them.
So I gave them a lonely wizard antagonist who "made friends" using mind control and necromancy.

Okay, so pro DMs, let's say I'm just starting fresh, I have the world, I need to build the story
Where do you start?
I have a blank whiteboard
Let's do this XD

@Skathix do you have players?

Indiana Jones style character, one-on-one game for a podcast so more story driven and need to focus on the player's strengths
She's a level 2 druid, and wants to multiclass into Rogue for the rest of it
@nitsua60 just recapping, there's a lot up in the older messages from like 1h ago

@kviiri Druid is the class I had the hardest time with in DW. (On the GM side, that is.)
@Skathix Gotcha. And IIRC this came up a week or so ago?

@Skathix Still 5e? Because my answer will vary by system, and for 5e it is along the lines of "start with something really simple to the point of caricature"

10:17 PM
@nitsua60 Yup, we recorded the first hour, @kviiri 5e yessir

@kviiri This is generally my experience with most any system.

@BESW Hah, good point. But I guess there's different kinds of simple for different systems :)

@Skathix Start with a 5-room dungeon; in the back of your head keep in mind that this'll just be Act I of your eventual structure, so spend lots of time taking notes about things that she says, that catch her interest, &c. Those'll be the things that make their appearances in Acts II-V.

Act I of the campaign, correct?

yes
I'm currently running a one-on-one that's explicitly attempting to enact Campbell's Hero of a Thousand Faces' themes.

10:20 PM
Oh nice

Structure was/is to use a nested 5RD--that provides me 25 scenes/scenarios which'll be more than enough to last us two years.

Nested 5RD?
5 Room Dungeon
Got it

@Skathix Have you same-paged with your player, by the way?
have you got an agreement on the kind of game you'll be playing?

@kviiri I believe the answer is yes
Yes

So Act I is the entrance/guardian; Campbell wants us to Cross the Threshold and Accept the Call to Action. Nice fit.

10:23 PM
Okay so Hero of a Thousand Faces being the Hero's Journey?

Yes--Hero of a Thousand Faces is the book from which the hero's journey is distilled.
Act II is RP/puzzle/investigation-heavy; Campbell calls for meeting the mentor or guide or crone or helper. Let's meet the new cast of characters that's beyond the edge of the world we've known so far.
Act III is trap/setback; Campbell wants for death and rebirth. [redacted's] going to get metaphysical up in here. I cannot guarantee we will remain constrained to this plane; perhaps Campbell's World Navel will make an appearance in one of its many incarnations. (Hall of mirrors, infinite bazaar, city of doors, world-tree, abyssal well, 40 days in the desert, &c.)
Act IV is big-bad; I've vaguely sketched in that both temptation and atonement should feature.

@nitsua60 what progress on the ToA group? Still a chance for me to join, or is it full?

ToA?

Act V is reveal/twist; Campbell has us bringing back the gift of the Goddess. It's going to be a victory/successful resolution of sorts, but something's off.... (stranger things (S1) spoiler)

I actually have what the Gift of the goddess will be
At some point near the end, her character will be imprisoned, (She's tabaxi that's important for this next part), she will be declawed in the setback
And the gift of the goddess will be silvered claws
Something something magic I thought it was a cool scene

10:32 PM
@KorvinStarmast I was just thinking about that two nights ago. I think it may happen. It'd likely be some pre-meeting/discussion during December, then starting up after the new year. (I'm a wily enough veteran to know not to start a campaign in November in the US.) So stay tuned--at some point in the next few weeks I'll probably drop a "LFP" post.
@Skathix Tomb of Annihilation.
@Skathix Ouch.

@nitsua60 I'd be interested in that if you're accepting cool people :P

Cool not needed, always appreciated.

Please, what does "LFP" Mean?

Looking for people
or players

I'll probably be in here a lot looking for guidance while I get my bearings on story writing, this isn't my first time but I love hitting you guys up with my plans and having you tear them down

10:38 PM
Sorry--(L)ooking (F)or (P)layers

Ah, DOH! Looking for a clue here? Bueller? 8^D

I assumed the P was Party

@Nits I so want to play in that group.

Ditto

Well, if 9pm-midnight Eastern US on Saturday nights works for you, you're in luck. (That's basically the only multi-hour window I can possibly swing.)

10:41 PM
Ok, that might be something I need to forward play (8-11 Texas time?) with the Missus. Will let you know.

Yeah I can swing that
Honestly my wife may be interested as well but idk. I'm worried I'll forget and I genuinely don't want to forget, can I shoot you my email @nitsua60?

@Skathix The key to all of this (IMO) is to sketch out themes/beats, but not script it.

Yeah I think honestly the part I struggle with the most is scene description
I either do WAY too much or way too little

@Skathix With your permission I'll just look under the hood of your profile and find it--if the one you've given SE is one you ever check?

I believe it's under my primary
should start with ngl

10:43 PM
[rummages]
yup. sending you a ping now.

@nitsua60 got it

@Skathix I then take those ideas/elements and then organize them into fronts/threats Dungeon World-style. So they're there, and they're doing things, but it's not a linear layout.
My school's library is having a contest/promotion tomorrow:
write a six-word horror story
I'll challenge the room, too. Last year's candy corn to the one that gets the most stars!

XD

@nitsua60 Electoral College votes <disfavored politican> President!

@nitsua60 "I hung her, she won't die"

10:50 PM
Only clean pants from "fat shelf."

"anyone there?", "Yes", from behind her.

100 page essay, handwritten, due tomorrow.

"The entire planet has no cheese"

@Skathix You monster.

@JoelHarmon XD

10:57 PM
"We value immersion; no metagaming, please."
4

@JoelHarmon "Math final's tomorrow" "I take Math?"

"The gazebo screams and turns around."

There are no souls, except yours.

Everyone else is your own reincarnations

The film is based on you.

11:03 PM
Pun-Pun is valid RAW, thus playable.

@Skathix You could always go the Avatar route and have your party's adventures always result in misfortune for a particular cabbage merchant.
Who eventually seeks revenge on her and her friends.

"Look out behind you! Another Tarrasque!"

(Headcanon: @Yuuki means "a cabbage merchant who's very picky and vocal about it," not "a single, named, identifiable cabbage merchant.")

@Yuuki Yeah it's definitely debatable, I feel like at some point I'm going to have to torture her/put her in prison and force her to eat cabbage soup and bread

Stranger Things dropped; in-laws in town.

11:07 PM
There is a skeleton inside you.

@nitsua60 for the horror stories: "You want a 9 person game?"

(do articles usually count for word count?)

"Let's play a chaotic evil campaign!"

@kviiri usually
@GreySage "let's play an all-bard party!"

> looks at images of oatmeal on the Internet
> looks at bowl of oatmeal made by self
> looks back at Internet images of oatmeal
... I feel like I've been tricked.

11:09 PM
Lmao

Whole rolled oats?

Steel-cut oats.

@BESW Nah we just took the average
Badjoke is bad

Ah, mean oats.

Quacker Oats: "They're Average!"

11:11 PM
To be fair, I haven't eaten the oatmeal yet so it could possibly taste fantastic, or at least as fantastic as oatmeal can taste.

It doesn't though, because it's not a bowl of lucky charms
Or a bag of Cheetos

But on a purely aesthetic level, I feel like I've been the victim of a horrible scam.
2

Universally those are the standards of "Delivious"
Delicious*
@Yuuki I've never been so interested in the taste of Oatmeal
BTW @nitsua60 @kviiri I did some research on the whole lich thing
I need a dracolich
So
That's happening now

hey there @Yuuki and @Skathix

It tastes kinda like liquid bread. Except less liquid. And about none of the alcohol that you'd find in a Guinness.

11:13 PM
@Skathix Who doesn't?
But hey, glad to be of service :)

@Yuuki only "about" none?

@GreySage I'm not saying that I poured a little bit of the extra rum I had laying around. I didn't. But I'm also not saying that I did.

Well, @Yuuki obviously used Guinness as her liquid agent
Omg
Another thing I have to do: At some point she has to face her greatest fear
And it's something-something cabbage monster

MOD FIGHT!!!! (cc: @SevenSidedDie) (edit: now only moderately-funny to 10K+ users)

Q: Does sovereign glue work underwater?

as.beaulieuI stumbled across an incredibly vicious trap. (Seriously, whoever came up with this, they need help) In the bottom of a well contains water 20 feet deep. At the very bottom of the well, a sword sticks out of a pile of debris, hilt up. Scattered across the floor of the well are piles of bones...

@nitsua60 Since sovereign glue is involved, wouldn't this be an incredibly viscous trap?

11:19 PM
Back to horror stories: "Mod fight in RPGStack general chat"

So who rides a dracolich?

RPG stack with Math stack quality.
@Skathix I'd start with Chuck Norris and work my way down from there.

horror story: "SSD vs. sheep--Miniman snipes both."

Well it's an interesting concept, because dracoliches or liches in general are evil, so it's interesting to think that though these two might be evil they are bonded so tightly it transcends that

DnD evil is not antisocial, it's just a cosmic team of sorts.

11:22 PM
Omg

Chaotic evil tends to be antisocial, but even that's not universal.

I think I just wrote my final boss battle lol

No? Nothing?

@Yuuki I have no idea
Final Boss Battle: After the Lich frees his Dracolich friend, they battle the main character, the lich or Dracolich dies, they merge to become the final form Demidracolich

Heh, that sound a bit like Digimon :P

11:24 PM
@kviiri I'll take it lol
Proto-Dracolich
Go more Final Fantasy lol
Or name the dragon something menial like Carl
Proto-Carl

Ultima Dracolich

Neo-Dracolich
Well the cool thing is I cold-opened with a scene of three dragons spaced equidistant around a massive caldera
So, like obviously that's where the Dracolich is
Omg I'm super hyped

@Skathix You asked about how we do campaign prep earlier. I had a successful run with a party to which I simply told "you'll be playing heroes, in a heroes' guild, doing heroics for gold, fame and common good". Worked like a charm!
We've been creating the world on a "on-demand fashion", except for some bits of exposition I post in our after-session reading that's styled like a newsletter.

Nice, that's awesome

@nitsua60 What really surprises me is that, going back to 3.5e for inspiration, it was just as ambiguous there.

11:32 PM
the whole "when does the 1 minute start" bit?

It should be noted the party was mostly first-timers, and a lot of the simplicity was deliberately aimed at making a focused game with clear principles. It has stayed remarkably close to what we agreed to: fantasy adventure. A lot of the campaigns I've been in have deviated towards all kinds of other stuff like business administration, politics or fishing because of players aggressively pushing against the rails

@nitsua60 Yepp - 1 round back then, but still not clear whether it can be used as a trap.

Anyway, it's way past my bedtime. Take care everyone

@nitsua60 Also, you were both before me :P

In any case, thassalottarep answering that question =)
Ooh... SEDE request: highest average answerer-rep on a question with multiple answers?

11:41 PM
Can't beat that KRyan + d7 combo.

Yeah, that ^^

@nitsua60 did I make an arse of myself on that poison question?

I dunno. I just dropped a comment about how it's a grey area.

hey there @NautArch @nitsua60

Part of it is that the consideration would have to be different as to whether the player uses/crafts the poison within one session, or from one session to another.
@Shalvenay hiya

11:49 PM
how're things going?

Howdy @Shalvenay

@NautArch what's up?

Quandary of the day: I'm getting notices that a KS campaign (3rd by the company) is about to end. But: why? Have I bought from them before? Did I like what I got? Did I tell KS to keep me informed with the idea that I'd decide buy/no later?
How will I ever decide what to do with these $4?

No too much. Just putting the kids to bed after carving pumpkins
