OH MY GOD YOU CAN DRAG AND DROP YOUTUBE SUBTITLES
I never knew it somehow
Now back to work at 10 PM.

@CanadianLuke /me dredges up the past (remember when I got suspended from chat for talking about the POTUS in here? :D)

Bob
@OtherCat hm?
@OtherCat Cleophobic coating? So... the coating repels newspapers? :P

12:24 AM
@Bob wasn't there a PDA device (before the iPhone) called a "Cleo"?

@Bob yes! Plus, it's really glass it just feels like it's plastic because explosion proof!

am I thinking of this Sony thing?

The Sony CLIÉ is a series of personal digital assistants running the Palm Operating System developed and marketed by Sony from 2000 to 2005. The devices introduced many new features to the PDA market, such as a jog-wheel interface, high-resolution displays, and Sony technologies like Memory Stick slots and ATRAC3 audio playback. Most models were designed and manufactured in Japan. The name is an acronym for creativity, lifestyle, innovation, emotion though formerly communication, link, information and entertainment. It was initially an attempt at a new coinage term, though it means "tool" in the...

A look inside Astaroth and thermals under a Folding@home load.
Your thoughts on the cable management?

@bwDraco much better than mine
if not for my case forcing me to separate the I/O from the mobo, my cabling would look like this:

lol

I spent a bit of time refining the cable layout a bit earlier, rerouting cables so that they did not have to go through the toolless SSD tray (in the event more storage is added).
One of the two 3.5" drive cages was also removed, seeing that's incredibly unlikely that I would need more than three 3.5" hard drives inside.
I also moved the PEG aux power cables a bit further out so they wouldn't block the graphics card's airflow.
The ATX12V cable harness required a bit of trickery to get into place without putting undue stress on the motherboard connector, and the adapter attached to the USB 3.0 header on the right edge of the board used for the USB 2.0 ports on the case had to be routed similarly.
It's a bit messier near the power supply area, but airflow there is less critical.
So... anybody else got comments about cable management?

1:30 AM
@Bob It repels FAKE NEWS, alright?
It is THE BEST coating. My friends tell me, "it really is a great coating"

2:06 AM
Testing overclocking - it looks like I might have a golden sample on my hands. The processor seems to be doing 4.0 GHz at 1.35V. More stability testing is going to be needed and I'm probably going to raise the voltage a bit to ensure stability but this looks fantastic even for a Ryzen 7 1800X.
Premium motherboard, cooling, and power supply all play a role but this is much better than expected.
Well, not quite - it's actually 1.4V.
But that's still very good for Ryzen.
I'll play with the load line calibration a bit.

Bob
ha
got mine (7700k) up to 4.5 on standard vcore, but put it back after
that was with the auto-oc though
apparently didn't get quite as lucky with the lottery as you did :P

2:23 AM
4.1 GHz... Prime95 just dies on a couple of cores.
LLC level 4, 1.40V.

2:40 AM
Note that during XFR operation, the processor can hit up to 1.5V, so that should be considered the absolute max. 1.35-1.4V is best for long-term operation.
1.4375V, 4.1 GHz: The machine hard-reboots.
It was apparently stable at 4.0 GHz using LLC3, 1.40V.
LLC4 will help a bit more.
So... I'm going to try to validate 4.00 GHz at 1.400V, LLC4.
It's getting around 1760 on Maxon Cinebench R15.
(memory at 2933 MT/s)

3:33 AM
le sigh
This is why my Dawn of the Creed Collector's Edition has not shipped.
Probably won't start the campaign just yet – will run the benchmark to prepare.
> The shipments for some Ubisoft Store pre-orders of Assassin’s Creed: Origins have been delayed.
Affected users will be receiving an email from the Ubisoft Store with more information as soon as possible.

We recognize that this delay is a large inconvenience and we sincerely apologize.
We have taken steps to prevent this issue from happening in the future and will do our best to rectify this situation for currently affected players.

I knew this day would finally come.

Bob
4:24 AM
Sounds ominous.

All settings maxed – resolution scale 100% (rendering at native 1080p) – dynamic quality off.
GPU not overclocked.
At resolution scale 200% (4K rendering to 1080p):
That shows just how potent the GTX 1080 Ti is.
No, it's not 60 fps, but the card's holding good frame rates throughout the benchmark. There's also remarkably little in the way of stuttering.
The processor is operating at 4.0 GHz during this benchmark.

4:54 AM
@bwDraco the light source behind your monitor is amazing; I've wanted a dim, ambient light that helps me see on my desk for years but haven't gotten around to buying one

@allquixotic Actually, just my flashlight in a glass jar and a diffuser wand with some tissues stuffed in it to reflect most of the light downwards.

I need something just bright enough that even with a dimly lit screen, I can still see items on the floor, or on my desk
@bwDraco that's amazing

#lifehack
Ugh. The controls are completely different.
I am probably going to just hold this off for later.
Save file deleted after ~30 minutes of play - will start over on a future date.
I really want to finish AC4 first.
I don't want to wind up getting confused with two completely different control layouts.
(would rather replay the tutorial sequence when I pick up the game later)

Bob
@allquixotic my screen's bright enough for that :P
and a backlit keyboard
@JourneymanGeek does the whole bias lighting thing
I tried a couple months ago and it works okay

Assassin's Creed Origins controls resemble the Dark Souls control layout, which is totally different from the traditional Animus controls.

5:08 AM
@Bob mine is too, but not when playing a game that gets dark, like nighttime in a survival game
when I'm on gmail or RA or most websites, there's so much pure white that it easily illuminates my room
but even a somewhat dimly lit room in SWTOR and the monitor's not putting out enough light to see things in the room

Bob
@allquixotic oh yea, that happens
that's why I got the backlit keyboard :P
when you walk into a dark area in a game and your hands drift off the right keys...

mine's just a solid daskeyboard mechanical keyboard with Cherry switches of some kind (Brown, IIRC)
no backlight

...and I have no experience with anything resembling Dark Souls.
(looked up the controls to make a comparison)

might get a Corsair K68 (dust and spill-resistant version)

5:26 AM
Okay, validating an overclock to 4 GHz (40.00x100.2, to be exact).
On Ryzen, BCLK is tied to PCIe and everything else (like Ivy Bridge), so you generally don't want to overclock this way, but adding 0.2 shouldn't cause any harm.
1.40V, LLC4.

@allquixotic my diy rig works ok. It's brighter than anything on the market tho. It's a simple strip of cool white LEDs powered off a tap on my psu.
Kinda would go with one of those newfangled rgb ones of I was spending actual money on it.

Peak temperatures of about 70-72 C, albeit with a window open on a cold night right behind the tower.

Bob
@allquixotic I got an off-brand ("Kogan") one with MX Browns and backlighting
@JourneymanGeek The newfangled RGB is fun for all of 2 hours :P

@Bob true
blog.codinghorror.com/bias-lighting is worth a read @allquixotic
I use an evolved version of hardwarerecs.stackexchange.com/a/1782/531
I actually am surprised no one has a vesa mounted bias lighting rig on the market
@Bob ambilight looks useful. Also being able to adjust for wall color

5:52 AM
(might be some delay before I respond. My eyes better but not that much better.

Bob
6:16 AM
hm
@JourneymanGeek what happened there, anyway?

6:33 AM
@Bob oh, sinus issues causes my right eye to go all watery and swollen
Worse than usual.

Morning!

Bob
6:49 AM
@JourneymanGeek ah. oof.

I'm better, but heh, I don't want anyone panicing ;p

@JourneymanGeek I built my own ambilight clone
wasn't perticularly hard
Part of what's in the plans to sort out :/

7:05 AM
@djsmiley2k 1. serious excess cableage (bad), 2. no routing, just cables strung from place to place, 3. cables hung up / suspended on some kind of hook (?), 4. that's where servers go, not cables

@allquixotic so yeah, basically
(i didn't have any part in setting this up)
so instead of cable management on the front, they used the holes in the sides of the racks as cable maangement
and cables which are clearly far too long
7~ racks to wor through
yesterday managed to remove about 15 identified as 'unneeded' cables :/
The joys of office politics eh
and no, there's no hook, that is just stuff hanging down from the back of a switch...

wow

yeah :/

9:44 AM
Hi

Hi

Bob
@OtherCat I used 4GB speedtesting over the last day :P
there goes my data
overpriced telstra data

10:00 AM
@Bob Lol
Go find a zero-rated speedtest hack! :-D

Bob
@OtherCat I don't think there is one :(

@Bob What about a script to just repeatedly download all the images off the carrier's own website non-stop?

HAMMERTIME!

Bob
@OtherCat apparently they only unmeter that on the wired broadband :/
wait. maybe it includes mobile o.O

10:15 AM
@Bob How do you check your allowance when you run out of allowance?

Bob
@OtherCat you get auto charged for a $10/1GB "top up"

@Bob Erf
Only one operator in the UK does that, and at least you can now turn it off
What about on prepaid?
Surely they have some sort of zero-rated service or website you can exploit...

Bob
@OtherCat can't turn it off on Telstra, I asked :/
@OtherCat I'd have to figure out which, but it's hard cause they don't have that granularity on data usage

@Bob Wow.
And I thought Vodafone UK was bad (£6 per 250MB it used to be... not sure what it is now)

Bob
and I'm on the new "home wireless broadband" plans introduced this year

10:28 AM
> Need more data?

To add 1GB for £6 a month, text 1GB to 40506
To add 2GB for £10 a month, text 2GB to 40506

Out-of-bundle data
What happens if I do nothing?
You’ll continue using data and be charged – £6.50 for every 250MB of data you use.

Bob
there's some sites that might be unmetered on "mobile broadband" but that's a separate set of plans

1GB for £6 a month... I'm paying £7 for 25GB

Bob
@OtherCat yea that's pretty bad
$45/month for 20GB... $10/GB top up is a scam

Yup
Mind you the excess/top up prices haven't really changed since 1GB contracts were going for £40 a month
> For Pay monthly phone customers
If you have a Red or Red Value Plan which started between 3 April 2015 and 5 May 2016, you'll be charged £6.50 for every 500MB of UK data you use outside your allowance
For all other plans you'll be charged £6.50 for every 250MB of UK data you use outside your allowance
Huh. Wow. They made the prices better, then worse again

Bob
@OtherCat fail

10:31 AM
But yeah, thankfully you can just enable a data cap on Vodafone now, so no automagic £6.50 for going 1KB over
Every other network here has had automatic capping on by default since 4G was launched
We also have roaming caps and stuff on by default... Australia seems a bit.. behind :-P

Bob
@OtherCat the add-ons aren't too bad
Ok I lied, they're pretty bad :P

EE's here seem the least bad, but they also have the most capacity. And terrible capacity management.

they all suck butt,
#justsayin

@djsmiley2k not my butt

10:58 AM
whatwhat

Bob
11:08 AM
@OtherCat is "bolt on" a common term over there?

yup

Bob
@OtherCat cool, it carries over to the next month
here:
> Any unused data allowance, including any Data Pack data allowance or Extra Data, expires at the end of each billing month.

11:39 AM
me and my ex-minion are meeting up for lunch

in the pub?
also i thought he went 'home' ?

restaurant near the office
he has, think he is just visiting

12:12 PM
I think i'm asleep

Hi, I have a strange problem with my internet connection. I have a contract connection 200 Mbit with Vodafone. I do the speed test on their website, it says about 200 Mbit arrives to the router, but only more than 1 Mbit transferred to end devices, like PC and mobiles. See screenshot below

just happen to have my eyes open.

@Ragnarsson wifi?

It means the internet connection on my PC and mobile is extremely slow, even though my router receives 200MB ??!!

12:13 PM
@Ragnarsson or they lie, yes

yes, My PC is connected directly to Router

via wire, or wireless?

so it is ok, but not fast all the time
with cable

o_O
then somethings very wrong there.
can you try a different speedtest, speedtest.net is good

and other end devices like laptop, mobiles and Start TV are connected via Wifi

12:14 PM
One nice thing with not being able to use a PC for 2 days. I have all my backups up to date, and wolfenstin the new colossus downloaded, tho, I can't play for now

Also who provides the router, you or them?

yes, I tried all the speed test , even the speed test on Vodafone
It comes from Vodafone, FritzBox 6490

I'd suggest contacting them then

last night, I tested, and I got only 1,4MB from 200MB package I ordered
I called them, they said it is because people are at home in evening, so the band has to be shared

tell them they are talking rubbish xD

12:18 PM
the guy said, they will reimburse 30% what I paid the last 2 months :D
unbelievable :D

@Ragnarsson but not fixi t?!
IPS is amazing

12:36 PM

lol yeah these posts keep popping up every so often
I wonder if I should go into security
but..... effort :<

1:01 PM
wtf cisco?!
> Repeat count [5]: 500
> Sending 8994500, [36..18024]-byte ICMP Echos to
HOW MANY PINGS?!

1:14 PM
@Ragnarsson @djsmiley2k it could be a terrible router or a bad/very long cable

yeah

1:26 PM
Hmm. Prime95 failed during the blend test, 4 of 16 threads errored out after eight hours. I'll be trying again at 1.4125V.
Or do I need more voltage than this?
Any Ryzen overclocking gurus here?

i don't touch stuff like that
i use either automatic tools (which are crap) or just don't bother, sry

@Bur

Catalonia has voted for independance. good luck to em.

@Burgi I also thought about the router, but this FritzBox 6490 is relative new, less than 1 year. but I am thinking about changing it ..

wibble wibble

1:46 PM
@Ragnarsson is there any quality of service settings? how many devices is it serving?

2:09 PM
i think its going to kick off in spain

Catalonia’s parliament has voted in favour of independence from Spain, it's done, I guess

i fully expected the UK government having to bring bring back a million people in an emergency

@Burgi I have a PC connected via cable to the router.
via Wifi: 2 laptops, 2 mobile phones, Smart TV and PS4

@Ragnarsson does your bandwidth go up if you disconnect those other devices?
@Ragnarsson the spanish government has just imposed direct rule

it doesn't, unfortunately. I turn off Wifi on mobiles, laptops are not turned on. PS4 is on stand-by. I usually watch Netflix on my TV, and the connect is so bad, buffering all the time

2:17 PM
are you torrenting?
is there a software update for your router?

torrent is forbidden in my country xD, so it is not in the picture :D. About software update for my router, I am not sure ...

you are in germany right? i didn't know that germany had banned torrenting

How exactly will Spain have direct rule over Catalonia?

i'm not sure

@Burgi yes I am. it is forbidden, but people are still doing, but if you get caught, they will take you to court. It happened to my colleague :D

2:24 PM
ah, there is a little confusion there. it depends what you are torrenting...

ah, I thought you mentioned download via Torrent :D

there are legal torrents, but i take your point
have you tried a different cable?

yes, I did, but nothing changes
I reported to Vodafone 3 times already, all they said was they are working on it and I have to wait

fair enough
time to swap providers?

2:35 PM
@Burgi sadly I have 2 years contract with them until beginning of 2019

ouch
just a thought, what is output on those network ports?

Bob
@bwDraco Heh, now you have me curious again. Perhaps it's time to try a manual overclock and see how far this can go.

At this point, I'm pretty sure it'll be stable at 1.425, but that's pretty much the most I'll accept.

Bob
Ok, let's start with crazy. 5.0 GHz @ 1.4V.

lol

Bob
2:45 PM
well, that was a quick fatal error
Ok, that's not happening :P

@Burgi Nah the spanish are too lazy

@Burgi I don't know, I have to look ...

@Ragnarsson pretty sure germany has simular laws to us about providing a service
right now they aren't providing said service.

Bob
Ha. Looks like 1.344V, 150W, ~4620MHz across all cores is about as high as it will go.
cc @bwDraco

3:09 PM
how long will it run at that tho?
I maybe a outlier, but I run my cpu's @100% constantly
forever.
so.... that's why overclocking to me doesn't work

Bob
@djsmiley2k Eh... default is 4520 MHz, 1.312V.
I'm trying to figure out how to get this thing to do single-core overclocking
but ai suite isn't cooperating :\
piss off, clippy

@Bob so 100Mhz for 0.3V of heat?
the things you end up on when you google 0.3V of heat

@djsmiley2k Works fine for me
I've had CPUs overclocked by 50% run at 100% for years without issue

@OtherCat nice

My i7 920 was overclocked from 2.66 to 3.8-4.0Ghz for the best part of seven years and still works

3:17 PM
maybe ur the outlier :P

Yes it's possible I'm better at overclocking than most people, if only because most people are mostly shit

indeed
and I'm lazy ;D
I don't feel the need, the need for speed.

I like to push things to the limit for the hell of it.
Helps that I'm methodical and objective about most things, including overclocking, thanks to my scientific education and upbringin

nod
logic makes sense to me
people don't ;D
for example night before last, son was crying so i went up to sort him out
wife was meant to be sorting all the tasks in the kitchen
However, because I'd put the dishwasher tablet in the dishwasher, she expected i'd turned it on, even tho i'd put the tablet in halfan hour or so before we'd even tied up...
yet some how it was my fault she didn't turn it on

3:38 PM
I should make a list of all the things I could be trying to optimize, prioritized by ... well, I guess there are a few different variables I could use. I'll create a spreadsheet ...
2

Hmm, running Windows Update on my server(s) for the first time in like, a year

much fun
I can haz server?

At least it's all on SSD now, so it doesn't take hours like it used to
@djsmiley2k Depends, haz u demanding needz?

no
just want :D
ideally i need a box to setup vpn on
from mah homes
but in reality i had one and rarely used it. because lazy.

Could give you a virtual machine easily enough
Hmm only one reboot required, unusual

3:50 PM
lol tbh it's not worth the hassle unless ur really bored
tho if you have b/w and space to spare, I'd run a warrior instance
we have defibulators at work:O

Bob
...whoops
I've been stress testing with prime95 ... with AVX enabled

uhoh @Bob whoops.

Bob
that's a baaaaaad idea

Bob
@djsmiley2k Rule of thumb is max AVX core ratio is at least 2 steps below non-AVX max
cause AVX uses a lot more power than most other instructions

3:51 PM
but what happens
oh right

Bob
@djsmiley2k stuff blows up sooner

for the overclock testing?
right, but what if you were doing smoething, that needed that extra 'ooomph' ?
just gonna crash ur machine?

Bob
@djsmiley2k I can set a separate core ratio for when AVX is used

:/
i mean in 'normal' usage
what if some app needs AVX, and uses all the cores?

Bob
@djsmiley2k yea there's an offset for AVX option

3:53 PM
or is that what you can control?
not just for prime, but for the 'whole' systme?

Bob
@djsmiley2k nono, I set the separate core ratio, and it activates automagically when AVX is used

ah ok nice.
fair enough then :)

Bob
but that needs ot be done from the UEFI menu
which I'm not messing with now
so... AVX-off testing :P

I was imagining an awesome DoS simply by firing up a app which uses this stuff
k i'm bored, it's friday, can i leave 5 min early?

Bob
whoops
bsod again
so I can do 47x at 1.25V without AVX
all cores clocked at 4700 but only one loaded
...48 is a bsod :P
48 at 1.36V full 8 thread load
...I'm gonna stop there and put it back to 45 :P
49 will probably step a bit over 1.4V
now that I'm done breaking my cpu... any luck on your end, @bwDraco?
if you can get all 8 stable that's pretty cool

4:59 PM
@allquixotic I don't remember, it was blacked out in chat

5:20 PM
yaaaaaaaaaaaas pizza ordered

Wow, you seem excited today

it's friyay

Great! What are you plans this weekend then?

kid
kids

Awesome! Ages?

5:32 PM
1 and 3

Awww! I remember when my kids were that age
My son is 6, my niece (who lives with us, pretty much as a daughter by this point) is 5

6:00 PM
Fun!
Wife is taking daughter to see Disney on Ice tomorrow so I've got my son
Going to the in laws tho
Not sure that 2.1 is gonna sleep
Mt god this windows update is gonna take while

~20 min 3%

6:45 PM
lol
