Q: Linux Mint 18.2 freezes randomly

NateI'm having a problem where Cinnamon 18.2 freezes randomly. It didn't always do this, it just started last night. No idea why. It's a similar issue to the one posted here: viewtopic.php?f=208&t=253589. No mouse movement, no keyboard, sounds breaks, etc. One thing I noticed that this started happe...

Q: how to migrate to docker architecture?

MemesI am totally new to Docker and I like the concept of isolation of the different processes in different environment, mostly too the fact that you can test something in a container without polluting your base system. I am now planning to undergo the big project to move my home server towards a Dock...

Attention guys, SmokeDetector is having issues currently and can't cast any auto-flags as MetaSmoke is down at the moment. Please be on alert for a higher amount of spam which will last longer on the site.

Metasmoke instability continues, harming Smoke Detector (incl autoflagging), userscripts, and etc. We are unable to take any quick action, but are considering our options. If you have clever ideas, please add them as a comment on issue #257

Hi
I am running out of space on my device. Do you think it is safe to just delete .tbz files? I found a .tbz file from Chromium, which is already installed, which takes 4.2Gb
I think it is OK, but just asking to be sure and not run in dependency issues or smth like that later...

.tbz is a bz-compressed tar archive
it could contain anything
Better open and inspect it first.

shit...
@ByteCommander too late

Q: How to check the logs to see what process created a file?

TelegonicaxxThe file dead.letter keeps appearing in my home folder. I want to know what process is responsible for this, but there is no information on the creator of a file in the file itself. However, I believe it should be possible for it's creation to recored in the log somewhere on the system. Cheerio,...

Q: What command is run when the dpgk option is selected in recovery mode?

Jacob HorbulykI recently ran into the following situation: I could not boot my computer normally. (I was shown a blinking cursor after the boot-loader and Ubunutu load screen but before the login page while never reaching the login page.) I was able to enter recovery mode. If I fully continued the boot, I ...

Q: Zesty fails to obtain IP when logged to Router via WIFI

Antonio SolisWIFI IP Loss - Zesty fails to obtain IP when logged to Router via WIFI When I plug Ethernet cable off computer, it remains on WIFI thus losing outer IP, that is goes offline for the world (retains 192.168.0.x IP). Therefore problem with router config is not possible - unlikely - since ALL OTHER...

Q: How would Steamcache work in a working environment?

MarcI’m setting up a Steamcache on a VM Ubuntu server at work. I would like to know how Steamcache would work in a working environment? How do we get the games onto the Steamcache server in the first place for our users to download from? It’s an Ubuntu server, not GUI. If one of the games is not on t...

Google will announce a new device in an hour, apparently.
Dang, I'll be at work. Won't find out about it until lunch time.

3:18 PM
they had to do it at the beginning of the month
when I still have a few euros left
Oh well what can you do.

3:34 PM
@NathanOsman you mean like the pixel 2 or new new?
@StefanoPalazzo Give them to me :P

:D
I have a nexus 6p at the moment, and the battery lasts about half a day
it's driving me mad. I really really hope they don't make the new one ridiculously expensive

points at his new Galaxy S8, and that it has about a day of power with his general usage of it, whereas his iPhone lasts half that time

@StefanoPalazzo oh they will. Whatever happened to the budget powerphone? Like the Nexus line or the early OnePlus phones... :(

the s8 has 3000 mAh, the nexus 6P has 3450 mAh :(

@StefanoPalazzo well considering my S8 is not used as heavily as my iPhone... :P

3:50 PM
I use my phone quite heavily

well there's your problem :P

man, the pixel 2 looks sliiiiick. But $649? That's more than I've spent on a computer!
Not that my computers are all that great mind you.. but still.
oooh, new optics.
no headphone jack though..

Hi , I have Dell Precision 5520 with touch screen and nvidia quadro m1200. I installed ubuntu 16.0.4 LTS on it. Whenever I try to write the cursor jumps randomly to different section of the text and selects and deletes text. I do not why it's doing so. It might be something to do with touchpad or Fn key. I tried to disable Fn key by pressing Fn+Esc
but it didn't help
I had manjaro xfce for a day and the cursor worked fine. However after installing nvidia driver the system crashed so I switched to ubuntu, since it support Dell precision 5520

7:01 PM
Hi.
PixelBook, eh?

@Seth OK, I'm not really one for aesthetics, but this looks good to you?

@NathanOsman starting price of $1119 lol
@TheWanderer That's not a pixel 2

it's literally the image from Google's store
you're probably thinking of the Pixel 2 XL

either way, I don't think that looks bad, no

7:04 PM
although I do think it's stupid the only apparent difference between the two is that one has more bezel where the other has screen

that's the Pixel 2 XL

@TheWanderer ah, yeah. They should make that more clear on the page lol

@Seth exactly. They're basically the same size, but they just put those gigantic chins on it

hm, that's not what the image at the store shows though. Weird.

actually click "buy"
they're just showing you the XL on the landing page
even Google thinks the normal one if ugly lol

7:06 PM
I did. Look through the "buy" gallery, there's a side by side and the XL is larger

oh that's what you meant

They definitely like the XL more, which I find even more stupid.

yeah it's bigger, but not by much

eh, I'd say that's a large difference

eh
you think 0.1" is large though

7:08 PM
That's obviously more than 0.1"
and the kinda blue is a Verizon exclusive.
I really hate the phone market right now.

7:19 PM
If it doesn't have a headphone jack, I ain't buying one.

The end.

I'd tend to agree.

Why does my lunch break always seem so short?

Q: What are the consequences of being a (wrongly detected) beneficiary of sockpuppeting?

pomskyHow do the beneficiaries of sockpuppeting get punished? It seems to me that whereas it's relatively easy and uncontroversial to penalise the sockpuppets (temporary banning/deletion of account etc.) it may be very tricky to detect (possibility of false-positives) and punish the sockpuppeteers....

7:37 PM
@NathanOsman you eat too much.

whoaaaa
adapters are super expensive right now, but I could get Thunderbolt 3 to dual HDMI/DP

9:09 PM
0.50
Mbps download
0.46
Mbps upload
That is not 3G speed TMO
it's not even CDMA 3G

3G is a network technology, not a speed.

but it is capable of a certain speed
and that certain speed is at least 4Mb/s

capable of, yes.

9:32 PM
So yeah, the new Pixel is just... not compelling to me.
I'm not really in a position to replace my phone anyway.
I'll stick with what I have for now and wait until something better comes along.

9:44 PM
@Seth this is tethering, so there's no interference or bandwidth saturation

you're still using the same network everyone else is using mate

@NathanOsman it truly is competing with iPhone in every way: same IP rating, no headphone jack, high price
@Seth no I'm not. I have LTE on my phone, which is currently at 35Mb/s. Tethering is limited to what TMO claims is 3G, but it's more like 2G

ah

ugh automated phone system
christ
oy, rep, 3G is not 512Kbit/s
it's 384Kbit/s at the lowest, and around 1 normally
but this is a hard limit at 512K
literally one mention of the limit there and it's under the no credit check plan

10:10 PM
So I'm learning how to make custom Android notifications.

ruh roh
supposedly that tower near my house was upgraded to LTE on the 29th
but it's still 2G

well.... this is gonna be fun
about to do manual FDE/LVM setup

10:25 PM
I thought LVM was supposed to be for automation

it is
but it also is good for raid0
(which is, regrettably, what i'm using it for)

10:43 PM
why are you using RAID 0?
don't be a scrub, use 4 or 5
>_>

dont have a choice here
i only have 2x 512gb ssds
id rather use raid1, but i burn through disk space alarmingly fast

11:10 PM
when i can buy new (bigger) SSDs, i'll go to raid1

Q: Tool to get tree diagram for pointer structures from one to other function/file

Bhaskar ReddyI have multiple .c files in one folder. Is there any tool to get tree diagram from root to leaf (particularly all pointer and array structures/functions) from all c programs. Can we use a visual studio code (VS code) tool? If yes, how can we use it?

I need an SSD for my Windows partition.
It's stuck on a mechanical drive since I need the SSD for Linux.

filed a complaint with the BBB

this is the most complicated ubuntu install i've ever seen
it feels like i'm installing arch

apparently, Sprint's terrified of complaints, so maybe TMO will be too
@KazWolfe #roast
WazKolfe
don't let @Avery hear you

11:51 PM
ok
i have LVM spanning two drives. LUKS is done on root inside LVM, and I will be doing cryptswap once everything else works
