@Memor-X I guess the easy way to explain it is like this. When it came out, TH2 was a very good VN, and an extremely successful one. At the time it was considered one of the best ever. Consequently there was a ton of content produced related to it, and (if you look hard enough) quite a few references to it. There are also still many fans to this day. If you want to understand the state of romance VNs in the mid 2000s, it's required reading.

But if you compare it to what is coming out today, it's probably not worth the time. Some aspects haven't aged that well, particularly the graphics, and there's no shortage of similar good VNs coming out these days.

@Memor-X I don't think that is a full translation. At least one route was also retranslated since then and most of the editing has happened since then as well.

I think you can update with the new patch though, except any saves you have won't work unless they're at choice points.

@LoganM i haven't played it yet so no problem with save corruption.

looking at the current patch and comparing that to the one i've had all this time it seems it's just a simple copy and paste patch but the translator has created a couple of patch files to automatically backup and copy the files

yes it should be very simple compared to patches for newer games. Older VNs like this generally didn't have much in the way of security features which would complicate things. Those only started appearing around the end of the decade.

some older VNs did rely on regional windows features though, which can also complicate patching them, but that's probably not a problem for TH2

@LoganM nope, only problem with the patch is possibly admin permissions running the batch file

the install instructions do warn that movies and full screen might not work but that's expected for older Visual Novels

it's stuff like that which makes me reconsider giving away my current PC when i upgrade. might need to replace the HDD at some point but so far all my Visual Novels i'ved played so far which aren't from Steam work without problems

It's pretty lucky that it's playable. Some older games required applocale to run if you didn't have a Japanese Windows system, and that functionality is completely gone in Windows 10.

There are alternatives but they are all not as good as using a real functional operating system

@LoganM my gaming PC is Windows 7 and i got applocale on it and ran this registry edit that added "Run with Japanese locale" and "Run with Japanese locale as administrator" to the right click context menu

it's put me in a habbit of always right clicking to run my visual novels, including the ones which have no problems without applocale

even ran a normal game in it once lol

I'm actually pretty sad about this, I had an old computer which dual booted Windows 7 and Japanese Windows 7 (for a few things that just couldn't be run well even with applocale).

That computer died though and I couldn't get a replacement running Windows 7 at all. Have to use Windows 10 which is honestly very bad.

It's almost better to boot into linux and VNs through wine, as dumb as that sounds

for 90% of stuff the locale is sufficient, and for 95% changing the locale and time zone will be sufficient

The OS itself is different but the regional features aren't what AppLocale fixes

it's mostly just the character set

Honestly maybe at this point I should just install a Japanese XP Virtual Machine. Probably easier than getting a Japanese Windows 7 VM and should run everything where it would be an issue.

had some simit but apparently there's a nice place called jojo that makes nice sandwiches so I'll try that out tomorrow

Overall the hours aren't too bad (8:30am to 3:30pm, it was 7:20am to 4:20pm last year and I had like 30 minute of commute time each way) and security is low and administration is lenient and a ton of stuff. I like it.

@ColdFire not sure really. don't know what rent is for an apartment like Yui's is in japan but going by Australian prices (might be for a larger flat) lets say it's $200 a week and doing a 1 AUD => 100 JPY it would be 20000 Yen a week

though i suspect it's much lower. rent is fucken bad down here
