Q: Can a snap be given write-access to an external drive?

M-Pixelsudo snap connect keepassxc:removable-media :removable-media successfully gives KeePassXC access to files that are on a secondary disk. Is there any way for me to give write-access?

@JacobVlijm Really busy at work is all...

@Fabby Hey, good morning!
How are you doing?

:D

Busy as always?

Guten Morgen!
Chat was open from last Friday, so logged on. It's an OK Monday-morning.
;) :) ;)
How are you doing?

:D
I was forced to reboot Windows this morning. Took me almost half an hour or so.
I had pending updates which got installed although all I wanted was my crashed wifi driver to get resurrected....
Other than that, I'm sitting in the university, database basics course.
Boring af so far.

7:20 AM
:D
Yeah... I sometimes wonder why we put up with Windows... but then I need Windows for work, so luckily i still have Ubuntu for pleasure!
;) :) ;)

Yeah, same.
Maybe I can get an Ubuntu system for work/uni in around 4 months or so though. We'll see.

Have a great day... Logging off

You too. Seeya

Hi
I have Ubuntu 16.04 on My Laptop. I need software like Adobe Photoshop anyone can suggest me?

eh
GIMP isn't that similar to photoshop

It is THE open source image editing tool.

How about Kritika?

It's not a PS clone and it might be seen as ugly, but it works. kinda.

7:56 AM
Sorry, Krita

If you need something between paint and paint.net, get pinta. if you need something between paint.net and photoshop, get gimp. If you need a digital art software, get krita.

Hmm... never used that, can't rate.

though you can install photoshop on ubuntu with wine

I need app like PS for create Portofolio apps

Portfolio apps?

I'm Android Programmer. And i want to create portofolio about my apps in android because i wanna publish the apps

Q: @-sign in samba username sometimes works and sometimes doesn't

user2296153my problem is on Ubuntu 16.04 with samba 4.3.11-ubuntu I have a number of users with an @-sign in the username. This has worked just fine over the last years (e.g. a@domain.com). A: rsync error: syntax or usage error

TomTomTomA very simple solution would be to change your working directory to C:\wamp64\www. Your rsync command then would look like: rsync -avz -e 'ssh' magento3 user@111.11.11.111:/var/www/html rsync won't see C: then and accordingly won't consider it a remote system.

@Rinzwind Is it? @BabyinMagento posted somebody else's (answered) question which was about using rsync over ssh.

yes he got an error due to a wrong command style between windows and rsync/ssh

2:43 PM
OK. I was just wondering since BabyinMagento never actually said what the problem was.

@terdon see the topic he posted @12:52

I did. But since that was not BabyinMagento's question but someone elses and since that has an accepted answer, I assumed the problem was something else which BabyinMagento forgot to explain.

We might want to talk about having SmokeDetector in this room.
Its usefulness here may be limited now.
And it makes the room look like a ghost town.

Yeah. To be honest, I'm not sure it's helpful at all.
The chat messages, I mean.

Yeah.
I think most spam is dealt with quickly enough without the messages here.

They were great before smokey started casting flags but these days, anything I see here has already been deleted and all I do is clean out the room.
Hang on

5:26 PM
Huh. For reasons I am unclear on, it isn't enough to just kick the bot. We need to wait for the charcoal folks to come in. Or maybe @ThomasWard will do. If so, Thomas, please remove smokey from the room. Let's try it out for a while and if the spam load increases, we can bring it back.

5:39 PM
Referring to askubuntu.com/questions/954836/…. @wjandrea, you are breaking down a complete error message into a part you are formatting as text and a part as error.
When the whole text itself is an error message.
Why would you do that? :(

1 hour later…
6:41 PM
@terdon I don't know how helpful the chat messages are overall, but over half the time I click through to a question smokey has flagged, the question has not been deleted and I cast my spam flag. When I look back at old chat messages, those don't still exist, but I can see the message when I'm in another room, switch to this room, click through to it, look at it, and I don't usually have to rush to flag it in order to delete it before it's already gone.
Based just on my personal experiences, it seems like the bot's presence in here is decreasing the amount of time spam exists on the main site and decreasing both the value and profits to spammers and the risks to users who might click spam links. That could be wrong, though, and even if it's right, I appreciate that it doesn't justify keeping the bot here if most people here want it gone.

WAAAAT
SE rate-limited my IP
Too many requests

@ByteCommander Like more than the regular rate-limiting? Like, your IP has somehow gotten on a list for special rate-limiting?
Oh. From you or another user?
I don't think I've seen that even when I connect to SE from a VPN used by many other users.

I was on my edit profile page and clicked the upload picture a few times because it refused to open and only showed dots for a while.
But not nearly an amount to be rate-limited for IMHO
other than that, f*ck DSlite.

Huh. Yeah that doesn't seem right. Do you have a unique IP? If there's no explanation for how other people from your IP could be using SE extremely heavily, this seems like an error that should be reported to the team@ address.

They probably don't know quite what booting is and want that message to go away, or perhaps they are concerned the message indicates a security problem and they want to fix that.

@NathanOsman Well well I just stumbled upon your Stack Overflow Q while Googling :D
@TheWanderer wat? why didn't you have it sent to you?

because it was supposed to come last week

how can I check if the return of a shell command was not empty?

I'd say you either pipe it to wc -c and compare the byte count of the output with 0, or you pipe it to e.g. grep -q '.'

apparently -z is a thing?

Oh, seems so.
Well, then use that.

wtf is dc

Probably a calculator like bc?

9:10 PM
it's some command line tool on Android

dc is a reverse-polish desk calculator which supports unlimited precision arithmetic.

agh
@AndroidDev do you know anywhere on the Android FS that isn't noexec?

Hmm... I can't get it to produce any meaningful output
Do you happen to know how to operate such a thing?

no
I found it because I tried to type cd

Great.

9:12 PM
and got it backwards

@TheWanderer uhh are you doing chmod +x ?

yes

You better not install sl then.

but /sdcard/ and /sdcard1/ are mounted with noexec options

@TheWanderer try /data/local/tmp

9:13 PM
ah
good idea

doth it work?

@ThomasWard just the fellow I was looking for.

@TheWanderer wait so it didn't work?

no it worked
no to thomas

no file binary on Android?

install busybox

Android has a pretty slim userspace.
If you have root, give BusyBox a try.

9:19 PM
@NathanOsman cool, what do you need from me

Lineage OS has nano by default which is really nice :)

You have one of these built in somewhere?

maybe. but the switch itself is broken

@ThomasWard no, you meant to say it's permissions are 400

so now it's triggered by coffee, I guess

9:21 PM
@ThomasWard I can't remember what I'm supposed to do next - after uploading to mentors.

no, it's a physical switch, @AndroidDev. The actual switch mechanism is broken.
@NathanOsman find a sponsor by emailing the mentors list?
@NathanOsman though I'd fix that lintian warning

Okay.

maybe

@ThomasWard Which one?

BusyBox doesn't have file

9:21 PM
the yellow one, @NathanOsman

@TheWanderer Wat.

@ThomasWard I know. but I was trying to be funny :P

/shrug

@ThomasWard You mean lower the standards version? :P
The package conforms to a newer spec.

@NathanOsman then leave it alone.

9:22 PM
Okay.

unless they tell you to fix it :)

Right.

@NathanOsman well hmm actually Zach is right... it doesn't: busybox.net/downloads/BusyBox.html

Interesting.
I would have thought file was a ubiquitous command.
Apparently not.

9:36 PM
@ThomasWard I think novices may read the first paragraph there as saying that Linux systems can't circumvent Unix-style permissions on external storage, not realizing root can always get around them (on a normal device), that UIDs and GIDs may not match up across systems, etc. I know you're probably trying to keep it simple, but would you be willing to make clearer that the main issue is that the OP doesn't control the systems that will use the device? Maybe:
> Because this drive is going to be used on systems you do not control, or that are not Linux and don't otherwise support the Linux permissions scheme, you're a bit out of luck here.
Sorry for not just editing. I don't want to make it say something you're not trying to say, though, especially since the answer is already covering a wide breadth of security concepts and trying to make it make sense to people who aren't familiar with them.

@EliahKagan just go edit it, if it's not what i want to talk about i'll just revert.
:P
we forget I have the diamond of pwnage and will just hit you with the hammer of power if you break my answer too badly:p

Sounds good, thanks. :) Edited.

9:54 PM
I'm suffering from the cross-browser compatibility blues.

@NathanOsman you put sponsor requests on the bugtracker?
weird

Not that kind of sponsor.
I just need someone with the right permissions to upload the package.

I know
but still weird that it's on the bugtracker
yano?

10:28 PM
@TheWanderer So I published an app yesterday and I've already gotten an email from "Your App On Top" and "Anna Appszoom" - are you getting scam emails too?
Apparently Appszoom is a company that you can buy reviews from
What the heck?
That's stupid

:(
Indeed.

rep cap is 200 a day right?

Sorry you and other app developers have to deal with that crap.

if I remember right?

Yeah, the rep cap is 200, but it excludes accepts and bounties. But for the rep cap related badges, I think you get them for 200 or over even if part of it is from bounties and accepts.

10:31 PM
then I've reached my rep cap for the day
first time in a while
all thanks to that single HNQ

OH YEAH AND I FORGOT TO MENTION IT'S UNDERHANDED...
Gosh

Congrats on hitting the cap!

it's all because the question ended up on the HNQ list.
which I wasn't expecting lol

I guess people were interested!

this has happened before too but meh

10:34 PM
Or actually I have no idea how the hot questions algorithm works.

it's rare I hit rep cap :)
@ThatBrazilianPony you need the community to agree to reopen it
or a moderator to do so
which question? because it depends on the question and closure circumstances
@terdon Smokey shouldn't report here anymore by the way
we snipped that out of its code base
@ThatBrazilianPony you don't
it's a bot
@ThatBrazilianPony link to the question
@ThatBrazilianPony okay let me say something
when I say "Community" i mean the close vote reviewers
or the moderators
in this case that question is ancient, why do you want it reopened

I had suggested and edit it to make it (at least a bit more) on topic, and the suggestion was accepted

a lot of the close voters are in here by the way :P

@ThomasWard Because the issue affected me, I found a way to solve it, wanted to add a new answer, but I couldn't because it was closed.

@EliahKagan you're one of the close voters there, still think it's offtopic?
it's a really old question (2012)

10:39 PM
Ok, forget it then.

@ThatBrazilianPony erm, what?
... that... was weird?

mhm
which I just reopened because I don't see how it's offtopic anymore
since our scope has changed over time :P

Yeah I had edited that with the idea we might reopen it, but didn't decide if I should vote to reopen. I'm definitely fine with it being open. Btw @ThatBrazilianPony please feel free to ping me in chat (works if I've been here recently enough so my name autocompletes) or comments about anything I've commented to say should be closed/reopened. I've deleted my "off topic" comment, but earlier @EliahKagan in a comment on the post would've notified me.
