12:00
My wife could likely of dropped me off, but still :/
@djsmiley2k That's sorted (I hope). they sent me a generic email "this is your job offer". The contract I sign tomorrow should be customised to the fixed hours specific contract.
I hope so, that'd b e awesome to hear about someone winning :)
At least you don't need to come to coventry for it? ;)
@djsmiley2k I will tell you tomorrow after my contract is signed, but it's none of the above. There are many call centres in Liverpool, many some of them are outsourced call centres for a lot of customers.
ah yes
simular to what we do at work
I mean, I could of got you a role on the help line for Ann Summers. ;D
@DavidPostill yeah no worries, I just thought I'd throw out a guess of a few of the big names I know who have call centers out there.
I can drive, but at the moment I still have a Dutch licence and no money to buy a car.
12:03
Oh there's a thought
you still got a strong dutch accent?
Tomorrow of course (the first day of my training) is a Bank Holiday. I start at 8:45 and the first bus doesn't run till 9:30 (Sun/Bank Holiday timetable) :/ I had booked a taxi but fortunately a relative has kindly offered to give me a lift.
@djsmiley2k What!? I'm a native English speaker and never had a Dutch accent ;)
I just worked there - hence the Dutch licence (I swapped my UK Licence).
I plan to ask them if we get paid extra for working Bank Holidays :)
that moment when you spill something that costs $10/gram
> cesium is the most electropositive and sublime element known, and as such merits praise, worship, its own newsgroup (alt.cesium), etc. etc. It has a number of unique properties:

It explodes violently on contact with water or moisture in any form.
It burns with a brilliant blue flame (well metaphorically anyway). The name cesium derives from the sky-blue lines in its spectrum.
Its hydroxide (what is left after it is finished exploding with water) is the most powerful base known, and will eat through flesh, glass and many other substances.
and have to watch as it bvusts into flames
12:12
@DavidPostill The ending of that was beautiful
12:32
it's funny
while the UK and US are fighting to shut down encryption, b ecause 'huyrrrrr terrorists!'
China is like 'lol we want made quantum encrypted network'
and I'm gone -0_-
@djsmiley2k The obvious answer is that China doesn't want the Five Eyes to know what they are up to :)
That sounds right...
Also, Uk and US want government to have the best encryption possible
its just normal folk who should have nothing to hide.
13:08
@DavidPostill And amarula. And jägermeister. And delirium tremens. And jägermeister again.
Oh, and caipirinha but with vodka or sake instead of cachaça and with various fruits instead of just lime
And by various fruits I don't mean all mixed in a glass. It's one glass of each, obvioudsljgh hic
By the way, speaking of caipirinhas...
Why the hell you call something that's obviously green and round and A LEMON but you call it "lime"?
The one on the right is a lemon. The one in the left is a fictitious fruit from cartoons.
Or a mutant orange.
I think I've both seen and tasted the fruit on the left once in my entire life.
> Plants with fruit called "limes" have diverse genetic origins; limes do not form a monophyletic group.
@DavidPostill Oh! Didn't know you had got a job! Late congratulations! :)
> The lemon, Citrus limon (L.) Osbeck, is a species of small evergreen tree in the flowering plant family Rutaceae, native to Asia.
They obviously don't grow lemons in BR.
@ThatREDACTEDGuy You are not alone Lemon-Lime confusion in Brazil
13:16
@ThatREDACTEDGuy you put it in the coconut
> And check out the difference in price! R$ 1.49 for a kilo of limes, R$ 8.39 for a kilo of lemons!! Price and prestige often go hand-in-hand don't they.
> the short answer is that there is one word in Portuguese which covers lemons and limes (limão). The long answer is that there are different words that cover different varieties of citrus fruit that come in a variety of different colours!

Interestingly, the French word for lime is Citron Vert, literally ‘Green Lemon’. I guess that reflects the dominance of the lemon over the lime in Europe. And in case you were wondering, the solution for distinguishing between fingers and toes is simpler than the citrus situation. Fingers are Dedos and toes are Dedos dos pés – foot fingers!
> Price and prestige often go hand-in-hand don't they.
Yes they do. Yes they do.
> a caipirinha made with limes is just a standard drink. But if you have it with Limão Siciliano? Now you've got a fancy drink!
> Portuguese (and Spanish) uses the same word for fingers and toes
@ThatREDACTEDGuy Brazilian Spanish?
Okay, time for a quick Portuguese Brazilian Spanish lesson:
Dot => Ponto.
Period (phrase stop) => Ponto
Point => Ponto
State (as in "what state things have become") => Ponto
Bus stop => Ponto
Wait => esperar
Hope => esperar
Expect => esperar
Mango => Manga
Shirt sleeve => Manga
Japanese comic book => Mangá (ha! that's a different word!)

Vaguely related, dialect hell:
(The examples start about 2 mins in)
@rahuldottech Study hard and do well :)
Being a student should definitely be your top priority at the moment
@BenN yep, thanks :D
@rahuldottech @El8tedN8te I'm not sure that learning programming languages is the most direct way to learn Windows internals, though programming is a highly useful skill to have, and you'll pick up a lot of OS design things through reading and understanding the API documentation
I also recommend the Windows Internals book - it's interesting reading even if you never apply it
And even though Windows is closed-source, you can learn a lot about it through experimentation and (once you get comfortable with a disassembler or debugger) reverse engineering
What is it with dress codes?
Bob
Bob
@ThatREDACTEDGuy I wonder how much pt-BR differs from pt-PT
14:11
WTF is the difference between a tailored shirt and a shirt?
@DavidPostill lol
Maybe a tailored shirt is a dress shirt, as opposed to a polo?
Also congrats on the job!
I was specifically told I don't have to wear a tie (yay) so why can't I wear a tailored shirt (whatever that is) without a collar. What is the point of a collar if you are not wearing a tie?
Answers referring to dog collars (of either kind) are not required ;)
@BenN Could be. I could wear a blouse or a cotton top though :)
:D
I can't wear a t-shirt (fair enough) but isn't a cotton t-shirt a cotton top?
I'm confused :)
Oooh. I can wear a clerical collar or a skull cap (for religious reasons). I wonder I that means I can wear my do rags? I have a large collection in different colours that I use to keep my bald head warm :)
I will definately test that one out some time in the future when it gets colder ...
@BenN Thanks.
Bob
Bob
14:43
@DavidPostill dress shirts (with collars) without ties are ... common business casual attire
also, congrats
@Bob Thanks.

@Burgi Call centre monkey in L'Pool
hm, maybe congrats is a bit too early? :P
(I kid, I kid)
@DavidPostill do you know what kind of call centre?
@Bob No. It's fine. A mere stepping stone :)
@Bob Of course. They provide outsourced calls centres for large businesses. I will provide more info late tomorrow after I have signed the contract (I have a "Formal Offer of Employment" email).
Bob
Bob
@DavidPostill ah, that sounds decent
All promotions are internal ...
Bob
Bob
14:51
one side effect of all the (international) outsourcing going on is you'll probably be handling the "nicer" businesses :P
(the ones that keep local call centres, and presumably care)
They are well known for their excellent training - 5 to 6 weeks (which to me seems like a lot in my experience of working for call centres) but I'm not going to complain.
Bob
Bob
@DavidPostill that... does sound like a lot
@Bob Indeed. A lot of companies in the UK are bringing back their call centres
@Bob Yes. My last job (VoIP tech support) I had just 2 weeks training (from scratch - I knew nothing about VoIP when I started)
Bob
Bob
lol. I still have no idea how to use the phones here beyond picking one up or making an internal call
that goes for a lot of other things too
they kinda introduced a formal onboarding process (as part of ISO 9001 cert) a couple years after... new employees know more than me
training? what training? :P
@DavidPostill it's become marketing point for some companies here. which is a good thing, mind
15:01
@Bob Yes. Indian Offshore call centres have a very bad reputation in the UK.
@Bob buffallo bufallo bufallo bufallo
@ThatREDACTEDGuy You are missing some. It is "Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo"
Sorry about the potato quality, we requested the ISP cold called us to sell a speed increase, and we bought it, therefore they decided to disable our connection.
> Thomas Tymoczko has pointed out that there is nothing special about eight "buffalos"; any sentence consisting solely of the word "buffalo" repeated any number of times is grammatically correct.
@ThatREDACTEDGuy :/
@ThatREDACTEDGuy o.O
15:07
And by "disable" I mean suddenly there's a "maintenace in your area", until suddenly there's no maintenance but "the technicians are upgrading your speed, that's the reason you got no internet".
Yay the pleasure of a single ISP on my coverage area
Bob
Bob
@DavidPostill I'm pretty sure they have a very bad reputation everywhere, including the country they're based in :P
agreeable statement
@Bob It's similar to the video, but involving only two countries. And the accents are very different.
But Brazil is a huge country, so we have similar stuff between states.
15:45
Can anyone find a question on the site regarding where the temporary files of Google chrome apps are stored?
24
Q: Where does Google Chrome save LocalStorage from Extensions?

JasonDavisI just had to format my Windows 7 system and start over, I made some backups of certain files/folders though and I am trying to find out where Google Chrome stores users data that extensions save, like which folder(s) I could look in to maybe recover some data for a certain extension I had?

@DavidPostill polo neck
A tie with that would look amusing.
it's a tee shirt, it has a collar
It's the same at my work
'wear something with a collar' is the rule ;D
@djsmiley2k Hmm. I will ask tomorrow :)
@djsmiley2k I don't think that counts as a tailored shirt though :/
16:01
oh? hmm
oh they mean like.... dress shirts
?
I've also worked where that's common too
@djsmiley2k Yes. That's it. I only have long sleeved ones though. They will get rolled up :)
I prefer shirts like this (I have a bunch) but I can't wear them :/
@djsmiley2k My point is if I don't have to wear a tie what does it bloody matter?
It's just as smart and I don't feel strangled all day ...
@Bob I'm now the perfect host for all our gaming shenanigans :D
pings to speedtest servers around 100km away are still below 20ms
16:20
@DavidPostill haven't seen many of these
16:31
@DavidPostill I...... woudln't have a problem if I wore those to work
but obviously different work places have different leniency values
@rahuldottech yeah I've only seen those on sale like once or twice ever
@djsmiley2k I will test the waters later when I've been there for a while :)

1 hour later…
17:54
WHAT IS THIS
so thursty
Riots in the city
@rahuldottech yes nice fun
riots are fun
Tomorrow is girlfriend's birthday and I might have to miss school.
@Avery they're over something so stupid
what?
17:56
becus riots?
cant type TM
atm
@Avery mum's asking me to not go to school
ah
your mom is a good person
I live in a safer part of the city where there are no riots, but still
Yeah
nod
sounds sane
gf might not be there anyway
she wouldn't want you to get hurt, especially on her bday
Yeah so...
IDK.
17:59
i once got sent home from work, simply because riots were 'predicted' by the police (and the hr directors husband worked for the police and let her know). I.e. it wasn't even public knowledge

2 hours later…

Already in Wikipedia?
Widespread rioting occurred in Northern India after Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh was convicted of rape on 25 August 2017. The riots began in Panchkula and later spread to other parts of the Northern Indian states of Haryana and Punjab and the capital, New Delhi. At least 36 people were killed and over 300 others were injured. == Background == On 25 August 2017, around 3:00 pm (IST), a special Central Bureau of Investigation court in Panchkula, Haryana, delivered its verdict in a 2002 sexual assault case of two sadhvis (female followers) of Dera Sacha Sauda (DSS) (Hindi: डेरा सच्चा सौदा). The court found...
...my first USB Type-A to Type-C cable (Griffin Technology 3.3 ft) finally gave way two days ago. It was used extensively for more than a year and a half. Just got some Anker cables to replace it.
(had a second Griffin USB-C cable on hand as a backup, with no issues identified)
Despite Anker claiming that it wasn't compatible with the OnePlus 3, the cable works on my 3T and charges at the expected 1.5A.
(IIRC compatibility issues only come into play with USB Power Delivery; the phone refuses to charge at higher than 500 mA if the power source is USB-PD)
Just came up in my auto playing youtube 'my music', wtf

> [20:01, 8/27/2017] @Burgi: do you not want taking to your parents house first?
[21:06, 8/27/2017] @BurgiGF: Yes...and then I want taking to your bed please

@Burgi Good that it's a Bank Holiday then :)

@DavidPostill rofl
@Avery Maybe they want babies?
@Avery pfffft

ah nice
@DavidPostill uh sure, doesn't hurt to remind though.
@Burgi Doesn't stop other bad things though :/
20:26
@Avery we aren't 16
@Burgi yes I know
;)
still doesn't hurt to remind
@Burgi xD
@DavidPostill ....
at the old house
the wardrobe fell on me....
not while we were doing anything... but just while I was in teh room
it's approx 12ft by 8ft, glass mirror
2x
@djsmiley2k Poltergeists!
20:34
was the washing machine on?
why have i never played KSP before?
i may have just killed my first kerbal though....
@Burgi Jebediah?
yeah
lol
he's looking happy at the moment
he's the first one that always dies
@Burgi well, the development was always sketchy
the original developers used to very very much underpay the developers and used to evade taxes
20:36
the winglet things exploded during take off
now taketwo bought them and it's still terrible because taketwo
WTF! the parachute didn't deploy!
were you too fast?
they tend to break when you go too fast and when they overheat
I like plane simulation muuch more in ksp
i might not have fully grasped staging
i think i'm allowed 1 revert to launch, right?
dunno
20:48
Proof the wardrobe tried to kill me!
I was stood beside it when this happened
I was basically thrown outta the room (this photo is from the door way)
Why did I just spend 15 min looking for thaty xD
ouch
also you have terrible luck
lol not really
I have a daughter, qwho at the time would of been about r 4 months old
if it'd fallen on her, or my wife :/
it's kinda weird, we'd been talking about taking it down for monthjs
and then that day it decided to help us out :/
My Anker USB A-to-C cable review: amazon.com/gp/customer-reviews/R5VZCPF1203TA
21:14
@bwDraco You should really concider doing a review site/ blog
21:26
@BenN Thank you for the great advice and knowledge. I will probably start looking at Windows Internal books.
21:40
@DavidPostill heh, that is what work insists on now. I find short sleeves more practical
heyheyhey
22:26
Room topic has been changed to: Root Access For all you Super Users out there. You have backups, right? Current topics: @Burgi's love life.
Never seen a wiki about a riot that was in progress
we had them about gezi
@MichaelFrank I think the 2013 riots in Brazil had wiki pages before they ended, too
They do, both in pt-br and in en:
en.wikipedia.org/w/… (earlier edit 14.jun.2013)
22:45
if ur bored :/
@djsmiley2k There's people talking
I have no idea what

@allquixotic unfortunately perfect is still a 200ms hit... thanks, speed-of-light! :P
beta.speedtest.net/result/6574921669 - 32ms, 117.90/8.40 Mbps. Slightly slower than usual, but still performing well.
I'm still 17, so my parents decided 10mbps is enough... my grandparents have 1.5mbps... eek!!
kbps??????
See, I don't have a good use case for a dedicated gigabit link.
23:13
oh
wow
100 Mbps is plenty fast for me.
@allquixotic currently 0 / 0
that is overkill
"My ADSL light is down"
"Sir please open a web page and test the connection"
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH
23:15
only 80 dollars.... that's sound pretty cheap for such a speed. but it is only as fast as the remote servers can upload
We used to have ADSL. It was absolute crap.
We're now on HFC cable Internet service from Charter Spectrum. At least we don't have data caps.
I hate caps...
Not everyone is so lucky. Lots of folks in the US have a data cap on their wireline Internet service, typically several hundred GBs to 1 TB.
That's more than enough for everyday use and occasional streaming, but not heavy, day-in day-out Netflix.
I don't think I ever exceeded that amount from what I can tell.
What is everyone's opinion on Net Neutrality?
@El8tedN8te i'm british, i don't think its an issue for us...
23:21
I'm a proponent of Net Neutrality
@Burgi , I'm not quite sure how it works there: do they throttle things there?
nope
Mobile service, support, though I would allow a few, very limited exceptions due to the inherently limited capacity of cellular networks (T-Mobile leveraged this to pioneer a new class of unlimited data plans). Wireline service, 100% support with no exceptions.
@bwDraco I'd understand your position for mobile internet due to its weaknesses. But whenever thing start rolling out for 5G, maybe then it would be fast enough? Of course they have no global plans for 5G though, since 4G seems to currently sufficient.
We'll see when we cross that bridge.
23:50
@El8tedN8te we believe in the market working
instead of legaising it
and generally it does work, until someone owns all the market (such as BT)
@djsmiley2k Well my main argument in affirmation is that with less protection on net neutrality smaller business would have greater difficulty starting up or getting recognition for their services due to higher internet prices for the same network that they already could have. Why would I want my internet to be capped, then ISPs come along charging more for the same internet services that I already had before the capped it? just so they can make some more money?
No, I don't like that prospect. I do agree with you that ISPS are dominating they market (if that is why you meant). They are trying to be the middleman of what should be maintained by society in my opinion, as a free to useservice.
