Cortana is getting desperate
I like how you can favorite questions from the SE app but you can't access them from it

@TheWanderer she sounds slutty

lol

1:39 AM
@NathanOsman This is pretty recent. I'll give it a try tomorrow. richardstechnotes.wordpress.com/2015/06/15/…
@TheWanderer sudo mv cortana metro spyware /dev/null
No more edits I promise :D
The virtual keyboard was being difficult

1:59 AM
Just that you can not overwrite or copy files into /dev/null...
Would make more sense to do e.g. ln -fs /dev/null cortana

2:25 AM
So it looks like O will be the last Android release for the OP3.
Then it will be time to switch to LineageOS I guess.

wait really?
that's stupid

2:55 AM
Switching to LineageOS?

no the short support
OOS is basically AOSP

Yeah.

@NathanOsman You don't even have the latest nougat.

I don't?
7.1.1 isn't the latest?

7.1.2

3:09 AM
7.1.2 was released 14 days ago.
I wouldn't expect to have it that quickly.

7.1.2 has been out longer than that I think

@NathanOsman no, no it wasn't. I've had it for months.

yeah April 4

Not according to Wikipedia, The One True Sourceā„¢.
:P

Well Wikipedia is wrong lol

The latest O beta was released about 14 days ago
I bet someone just edited wikipedia to the date they got it lol

Yeah, probably.

ummm

Yeah, looks like that's when the Pixel got it.

3:12 AM
> Latest release 7.1.2 "Nougat" / April 4, 2017; 4 months ago
yeah

I was looking at this page: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Android_Nougat

Hard to believe I got it before the pixel though.

I'm going to guess that there was another version of 7.1.2 released

Hmm... that could be.
I'm just guessing.
Let me check the edit.

You mean like the security patches?

3:13 AM
yeah that's release_33

Nougat was the best. Every single release had small features I found myself using every day.

So yeah, there were multiple 7.1.2 releases.
Nice and confusing :P

wait I thought they pulled night light?

hmm?
no
Night Display exists
it's just disabled in the framework-res by default

BTW, I've said this before but Android Pay is the coolest thing ever.

3:15 AM
Google probably enabled it on the Nexus 5X because it supports HWC 2.0

It's making me like shopping again.
:D

lol

@TheWanderer where is it then?

oh I thought you meant you found it
you have to root to enable it

ahh

3:16 AM
Apparently, you could get a Nexus 6 for $230 yesterday on Amazon.

I haven't rooted 'cause I haven't needed to.
I just use twilight.

@NathanOsman I paid less for my 5X

those non-system overlays are meh
5X is newer than 6

I paid over $900 CAD for mine when it first came out.

3:16 AM
because Google has great versioning

I was one of the first Canadians to get one :P

you're like those people buying the Note FE

@TheWanderer It's a screen size thing ;)

Hey, I was still able to sell it for a pretty good price.
And I'm happy-ish with my OP3.

@Seth 5, 6, 5X/6P
because why not
@NathanOsman OP is a big meh

3:17 AM
At least you aren't doing the Windows thing.

lol

Windows 7 is version 6.1.

@TheWanderer 4: 4.7". 5: 5". 6: 6". 5X: 5". 6P: 6"
makes sense to me

3.1, 95, 98, 2000, ME, XP, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, 10
@NathanOsman oh I thought you meant the names
because they really need to decide on a naming scheme

The names are special in their own little way.

3:18 AM
One of my friends got the OP5.

ewww

I haven't gotten to play with it much but it looks gorgeous.
@TheWanderer We all know your biases.

Hey, at least they can count to three. *cough* Valve *cough*

of course it looks good; it's an iPhone

and you just admitted Apple has good design

3:19 AM
I still think Huawei has the right idea with the Honor 8 and 9
@Seth no one ever said they didn't

Oh, I'll admit Apple has nice design.
Too bad function went out the window.

Apple's phones are just really low value
and OnePlus is starting its climb

Apple's motto: "think different" - "Hey, let's do things differently - instead of making complex interfaces with complex functionality, let's make simple interfaces with simple functionality."
Works for some people. Not for me.
@SmokeDetector O_o

you have to admit, though, the Android settings app really needs a redesign

It does?

3:21 AM
and what's with these free IP camera spam posts?

If I can't find something, I can just search for it.

yes, it does
search is crap
it never works lol

@TheWanderer y u no wanna have ip cam?

>_>
but seriously, fire up an O emulator

Too much work.

3:22 AM
they redid the settings app and it's a lot simpler

I have to launch AS, I have to update, then I have to install the emulator, then I have to set up a new instance, then I have to boot it... argh. So much work.

fewer categories on the main screen, which might be annoying at first, but then you realize your eyes don't glaze over scrolling through 5 dozen items

:P
I spent a good chunk of the day learning React and Redux.
Now I can say I've used Ember, Angular, and React.
Still not sure which one I like the best yet.
I really like JSX though.
We hit 34.70 °C today.

Q: Browser not displaying updates to symbolically linked folder and files

AnthonyI recently installed Windows Subsystem Linux for development purposes. I then symbolically linked a folder in Windows to the server folder in apache2 like so... ln -s /mnt/c/Users/[user]/Desktop/[folder] /var/www/html ...so that I can load the webpage via a browser (localhost/[folder]/[file])....

@Seth THIS.
I had the display driver crash twice yesterday.

I'm really tempted to jump ship to Debian or (better yet) Devuan (and give systemd the boot too).

if my friend's work laptop, that definitely isn't mine, were to stop giving signs of life
except that
when you plug it in
the external power lamp lights up
if and only if the lid is slightly ajar
what would that mean
for my friend's work laptop
that isn't mine

if and only if the lid is slightly ajar???

1 hour later…
1:09 PM
@edwinksl yes

@edwinksl aka slightly open

Seems like it's dead.
Hardware fault.

@badp vrije universiteit = VUB?

Maybe some broken or lose cables that you could spot and fix when you take it apart, maybe something deeper.

@badp this indicates bad contacts at the lid joints I d say
@badp where is that lamp? somewhere on the lid?

1:21 PM
@trilolil vu.nl/en
@trilolil yup

@badp nice
@badp confirms my first thoughts, ie bad contacts
do they always light up or only sometime?

@trilolil I'm hoping this is because I forgot half of the charger and used the "dumb" half from an HP charger

or what?

@trilolil when they lid is slightly ajar, and indeed it flickers when slightly off angle

btw, do you hear the hdd when you power it on?
what can you see/hear except those leds?
the ventilation? the hdd?
have you tried plugging in the hdd into another pc, to be sure the data at least is safe?
not sure powering on and off a hdd every 1-2s (let it be due to bad connections) is good...
crucial information is missing imo
@badp how is it to work at google? How did you enter?

1:26 PM
@trilolil it doesn't power on.
@trilolil nothing.
@trilolil haven't, will leave that to work's helpdesk. but it sure would be nice to know what the root cause is to avoid replication :/
@trilolil it's an SSD and I don't think it ever got power
@trilolil I applied as an intern. There are two phone interviews, and then you're either in or out. This was some 3 years ago though.

@badp that s impossible from an electrical stand point

Most internships are 3 months, mine happened to be 6.
@trilolil well, the fans never got any power.
because they'd have spun audibly otherwise

@badp how the hell is a motor inside the fan supposed to make it spin without power
it used to have power
now maybe not any more
@badp which is why this is impossible

I mean
the SSD clearly used to work before whatever happened did

do you have nda's at booking?
@badp which is why I would try to plug it into another laptop/pc or whatever to already try to save that data (beter be safe) and check whether it works

1:31 PM
@trilolil well obviously.

if you were an EE, I d say "try to measure whether you got some voltage coming in "
@badp what aren t you allowed to speak about?
currently, I think that
if you can t hear your fan while it otherwise would immediately have been the case. There is a power problem

@TheWanderer System UI tuner has 50,000 downloads? Holy cow! Congrats :)

maybe if the power isn t stable enough the rest of the circuitry isn t turned on for "securrity"
you can also try another power supply
could be that the cable you are using doesn t supply either enough current either the correct voltage

17.04 is so buggy. I need to decide whether to go back to 16.04 or install OpenSUSE.

I really really don't know how they let 17.04 go through QA

You're threatening to betray us for the Chameleon?
Well, I stayed with 16.04 and I'm happy with it.

@Avery They really need more contributors :/

I went with the blue peridot hair

@ByteCommander shrug. It'll probably happen someday. I really like Unity though so..
I'm not terribly happy with the way Ubuntu has been treating desktop lately. We'll see what happens.
@Avery is that like a blue olive color?

3:45 PM
no, closer to the blue of cl-netbox' profile picture
(it's arch)
moore like baby blue
or sky blue

@Seth What's going on with 17.04? And you know I like OpenSUSE (although Tumbleweed has blown up on me a couple of times)

@Avery those are all different blues to me lol
@chaskes it's just super buggy. LightDM crashes, sometimes when I log in my mouse pointer isn't there, and my multi-monitor docking station setup never quite works right

I get abrt alerts about a gnome-shell crash every time even though I have said to ignore it. I get the mouse pointer bug on a lenovo but not my System76 (same logitech usb). But I guess they would say the non-LTS are always semi-beta.
OpenSUSE 42.3 just came out. Very solid although the installer may seem weird if you've never used it before. I haven't compared package versions, though.

I find everything weird compared to ubiquity :P

4:04 PM
Ubiquity/DI is the best but with one major flaw for the unexperienced: it immediately formats the partitions once you've selected Change. Nothing really wrong with that design choice, but I like how both Anaconda (fedora) and suse wait for you to hit Start Install before it touches the disk.
OpenSUSE installer has (hidden away under the summary at the end) fine-grained control over what packages to install. If you're using the install dvd, this is much, much faster than downloading them later.

4:15 PM
@Seth I mean, same
but I confused colors
Don't see arch logo that often

4:45 PM
@Seth I agree with you ... I even had to switch my wife's machine to CentOS because ubuntu 17.04 froze every few minutes ... Hi Seth ! :) But don't choose Suse - better choose fedora 26 workstation ... everything works flawlessly out-of-the-box ! :)
@chaskes Hi ! :) Did you check out the new RHEL 7.4 ? Much better than open SUSE ! :)

@cl-netbox I run the rhel developper edition (but haven't upgraded it to 7.4 just yet). I agree that it's better than suse. (but I like suse, too).
@Seth Or you could try one of the fedora spins if you don't want gnome3. If you try fedora, the easiest way to install closed source things is through fedy.

@chaskes Do not upgrade from 7.3 to 7.4 ... too many dependency issues (jump from GNOME 3.14 to 3.22 is too much different) ... better perform a clean installation ! :)

I've had to use Fedora before and I hated it.

centos/fedora/rhel is painful

@cl-netbox Korora is a fedora spin with the proprietary things already in it.

4:54 PM
@AndroidDev dammit

@cl-netbox Thanks. I usually do a clean install, but actually hadn't planned to with this one. will do.

@Seth that is not the case anymore ... fedora changed a lot since Matthew took over and introduced the fedora next project ! :)

@cl-netbox I was using it just a few months ago for school.

@chaskes you will definitely like it ! :)
@Avery what ??? definitely not ... those are great systems ... my wife loves CentOS 7 ... and she is not an expert at all ! :D

of course
simple stuff, works well
when you start experimenting it gets painful
Another example: You can run a bunch of basic stuff on freebsd but when you try to get more stuff working, it gets painful.

4:58 PM
@Avery why ? for example : the whole KVM virtualization thing works much better than in ubuntu ... :)
@Avery I think that the more you dive deeper into the redhat systems, the easier you are getting used to it ... and then more complicated things work as well. :)

well, I've just found a big lack of documentation on the said complex stuff

@Avery a lack of documentation ? please check out -> access.redhat.com/documentation/en/red-hat-enterprise-linux :)

as I said, that covers the "simple" stuff

What kind of complicated stuff do you have in mind?

@Avery ^^^^^

5:04 PM
can't think of any, but well, it's usually just me experimenting with not-so-well-known software etc
the lack of apt/dpkg is big problem

@Avery RPM package management (dnf/yum) beats apt in dimensions ! also this is what I would call simple stuff ! :D

maybe
and jpg sucks
and php
and mp3
@cl-netbox that was just one example
but those are widely available

@Avery what ? simply add RPM Fusion and install gstreamer1-libav :)

that's not what I mean
apt might not be as good as rpm, but a lot of stuff are distributed in deb

@Avery everything is available as rpm -> pkgs.org ! :)

5:09 PM
@cl-netbox Just curious, what country are you in?

@chaskes I am living in Germany - and where do you live ? :)

jpg might not be as good as bpg, but jpg is pretty much the de facto standard. Php might not be as good as node, but it powers most of internet. mp3 might not be as good as flac or opus, but it's much more popular. Etc, etc, etc.

US

I didn't know about pkgs.org.
Will check out if I decide to give another shot, though I'm at arch now and am very happy.

@Avery arch of course is also a good choice for advanced users. :)

5:12 PM
indeed.
Also, if it isn't clear, I agree that everyone is free to use whatever distro they want and I'm not telling anyone to change their distro, I'm just stating my personal opinions.
Also, unrelated, compiling chromium is a huge pain.

@Avery why compile ??? fedora has it in it's repos and in CentOS / RHEL simply add EPEL repo and install it via dnf / yum ... chromium is my default browser and it runs perfectly fine on these systems. :)

to add widevine support to vivaldi
I basically end up compiling once a month or so to update the plugin

@Avery Isn't there a version with included plugin available in AUR ? I'm asking because I never tried arch and somebody told me that everything is available as an AUR package there. :)

oh, it's on AUR
the AUR package is compiling for me, actually
there's just no binary-only versions, sadly

I didn't think the AUR did binaries at all

5:20 PM
@chaskes why did you ask ? is my English that bad ? :D :D :D

AUR does make binaries

TIL

@Seth what is TIL ? what does it mean ?

@cl-netbox today I learned

@Seth aha - thanks :D

5:22 PM
I commented with that to the AUR package, maybe the maintainer will switch to that

@Avery that's the good thing in the linux universe : there is always an alternative available - right ? :)

@cl-netbox I asked because I like looking at other languages. I know some basic German but very little. (I took German for Reading in college.) Your English is excellent, but somehow it didn't feel native. Looking back after the fact I see: ...the easier you are getting used to it... instead of 'the more you get used to it' or 'the easier it gets'.

@chaskes yes, you're right - thank you ! :) thing is that my brain is faster than my fingers (two finger typing) ... :)

@cl-netbox Absolutely. Passive reading is one thing, but the only to learn to speak and write is to do it and not be worried about mistakes.
