2:06 AM
The UI for this Windows Form Editor is a bit horrible, but I'm making it through it, slowly.

2:22 AM
:D

does anyone here know how to make a clone of super mario galaxy in game maker?
i need help
@Almo oh hey almo!

@Typhon that sounds like a massive undertaking

but it must be easy right?

no way

@Almo but this guy is doing it so why cant I? indiedb.com/games/block-builder/images/…
@Almo why is it massive?

3:09 AM
don't ping me every message please

ok
sorry
I just fail to see what is so hard about spatial physics?
it is just gravity
or geometry
and I already know the latter

Super Mario Galaxy isn't "just spatial physics"

ok

it's a whole ton of: game design, level design, control and interface programming, art, audio... it's a massive undertaking.

sure but the math itself of walking on planets like that is trivial
i would argue the tricky bit is pathfinding for enemies

3:14 AM
making a game is way way more complicated than just doing the planet-walking math

but even that is a solved problem in graph theory

that detail is the easy part

@Almo i know. I was just referring to the math

"does anyone here know how to make a clone of super mario galaxy in game maker?"

nvmd
forget about it

3:15 AM
that means making the whole game

im probably underthinking it anyways

you need to communicate more clearly

@Almo i know

and don't ping me every time

I'm replying to a specific message. You're supposed to.

3:16 AM
there are only the two of us here
I can tell what you're talking about
there's no confusion

future readers though
shrugs

few if anyone read the chatlogs

that's what I was told

use some sense man. if there are a bunch of people talking, or it might not be easy to figure out what it's a response to, then do it.

i know
i was scolded for not doing it in a similar situation to right now

3:18 AM
well, that person was being a dork

lol
fair enough

:D

:|

3:48 AM
i just realized my avatar makes me look like a fool now
i really need to find something better to do in my spare time...

4:06 AM
@TyphonI don't think it makes you look like a fool (other good reason for ping is if it's been 15 minutes since last message :D)

4 hours later…

Morning chat

8:48 AM
MOrning Guys. Does anyone know of a good Unity combo based combat system tutorial. I need to check out how the animator is set up for that sort of thing.

No idea, don't really use unity all that often =p

Morning!

9:09 AM
Started studying Unity this past weekend. \o/ Turns out almost all the tutorials are about 3D games, so I guess I'll be sticking with a little 3D playground project at first.

9:19 AM
nice. @doppelgreener shout if you need any help

thanks very much :)

3 hours later…

Dev Blog- Sea Trading Game- New Website, more Livestock, and Goods tool in progress! colonialseatrader.com/blog/index.php/2017/07/03/…

12:34 PM
So as recommended here I go again: Hey you gamedev people, if you have a few seconds time: What OpenGL versions do you code against, and why?

If I had to pick I'd go to steam hardware survey and look at that list

@KevinvanderVelden did that, hardware survey doesn't give OpenGL versions, just DX - or at least I didn't find the OGL versions

HMMM well crap
There goes my plan =p

3.3 core seems to be a save bet if you want to target all of gamerkind (including those pesky macs)

What kind of hardware do you want to support?

12:39 PM
I honestly just want to be able to reach as many people as possible

Then go for a software renderer, everyone can support that =p

Well not that many
I still enjoy fiddling with GPUs

You're going to have to give a rough outline of "I want to support hardware N years old"

well even if I wanted to support cutting edge HW I'd be limited to 4.1 according to apple's mac specs
I'm mostly wondering about you folks with this question

I'd look at the quick overview list of features each version supports (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenGL#Overview )
So 1.* is right out, I do want shaders, shaders are great and do all the things
sRGB textures are also useful, and hey if minecraft can drop support for 2.0 years ago then it's probably fine to drop that
(you're not going to be as successful as minecraft, no one is =p)

12:44 PM
(I'm not really doing it for the success)

So that's 2.1 or higher, do you need framebuffer objects? If so go with 3, otherwise a decent usable minimum level is 2.1
Though even 2.1 is already 11 years old
(and 3.0 is 9)
(well almost, in august)
I'd probably go for 3.0 as a minimum, should be decently supported and FBOs are really quite useful for a bunch of effects

1:26 PM
Hi!
@UriPopov youtube.com/…

@Curio why do I need a c# begginers tutorial ?

@UriPopov didn't you need to learn Unity?

nah man that was @doppelgreener
I've been working with unity for 6 years now

So I read baddly
Sorry

DH.
Lol

1:32 PM
@UriPopov I only read Unity

DH.
And there's a lot of good tutorials in Unity's site

i'm super comfortable with C# already :)
thanks for thinking of me though @Curio
but if i skip ahead a dozen or so videos in that series, it looks like it specifically covers the Unity API, which is good

DH.
More than coding, the first thing that is good to learn about Unity is the "IDE"

the editor ?

It's interesting building a pure C# (Well, Windows C#) program after Unity...

1:40 PM
@UriPopov yeah, ide is integrated development environment, so the editor

I learned C# through Unity, so...

@DH. thanks, will do :)

The IDE is pretty good, there are definitely points that lack in Unity...

An english question
Can I use "have to" with the present continuos (future) ?

@Curio could you provide an example?

1:43 PM
@doppelgreener In fact I linked that video because it is the first of the Unity playlist :)
For example, tomorrow I'm having to do an exam

@Curio sounds fine. I'd say "tomorrow I have to do an exam"

Is it an error?

"I have to be at work in the morning" -- lots of peoples' reasons for leaving a party early
"I am having to be at work in the morning" is technically OK but very unusual

Ok, many thanks

3 hours later…
4:26 PM
if(firstconditionmethod() && secondconditionmethod())

When the first is false, the second isn't called. Is there a way to disable it? I guess no.

user92578
nope

arg, thanks

user92578
bool first = firstcondition(); bool second = secondcondition()

@Tyyppi_77 yeah that

yes

user92578
4:26 PM
if (first && second)

great

user92578
that's called short-circuiting btw

user92578
happens in ORs too when the first expression is true

yeah, the "only evaluate this second function if the first returns true" is called short circuiting and it's a desirable feature.

4:44 PM
@Curio why would you want that?

@dot_Sp0T do you mean the translation?

@Curio I meant checking for the second result if the first already tells you that the second doesn't matter

Because I always have to call the methods
Because there are important actions in them
(translation)

So you have side-effects happening in these methods that need to run regardless of their results?

@dot_Sp0T yes, but the boolean return value is important because it tells me when the traslation has to stop

4:49 PM
@Curio hmm it still sounds suspect to me. But it's cool. You do what you need to do :D

@dot_Sp0T why is it suspect?

@Curio I guess I'm just used to other programming paradigms. E.g. I'd probably have a class with a method to do the translation and another method to check if that bool was set

@dot_Sp0T You can do it with an only method

user92578
how does that work btw? do you have to select every message individually?

155 messages moved to Trash
@Tyyppi_77 with the assistance of the classic shift+click and ctrl+click operations, thank goodness.

user92578
4:57 PM
oh coolio

What did just happen? I was just away for a few minutes :/

user92578
oh no where'd you disappear for a moment doppel?

FEAR NOT
i had to reload because it still had the old transcript in my cache

:38537208 yeah, but there's plenty of ways you can achieve something - not all of them are good :)

right :)

user92578
4:59 PM
I think a separate getter for a boolean there doesn't sound optimal at all

and now I really need to dig into STB for an hour or so... o/

user92578
oh, whatcha doing with STB?

@Tyyppi_77 it really depends on the situation I guess
right now true type font loading

user92578
yeah, method naming in curio's situation will be tricky though

as long as they properly document what the method does it shouldn't be an issue

user92578
5:01 PM
yup

12 messages moved from Trash

Page not found

that's an automatic message since i undeleted a portion of the conversation that got trashed

user92578
I could've sworn Trash was viewable a while back?

it's not supposed to be!

user92578
5:05 PM
yeah idk
not sure if you're still working on the trashing or if you just missed the latest messages?

trashing and de-trashing is done for now

user92578
ah weird, it removed the earlier messages for me without reloading the page but not the latter ones

user92578
all fine now

user92578
so monogame huh?

user92578
also rip monogame messages?

5:11 PM
oh yeah. was half changing the topic, half considering what would be an appropriate platform for voxel stuff considering this comment from @PearsonArtPhoto
and monogame came to mind as a framework i have some indirect experience with (by way of XNA)

In fairness, I know little about Voxels.

user92578
hmm yeah, I kinda know a guy who's making a voxel game in C# with DX I believe and he's just not happy with the garbage collection and whatnot

user92578
I think he still uses XNA for the windowing and such

hi

Hi, welcome back. Let's try to stay on a decent conversational track this time, please. :)

5:14 PM
i thought we were
and i tried to leave and you guys called me back :|

it was rather disruptive

regardless i got rid of the copy/pasted code
it didnt occur to me at the time that that might be plagiarism
anyways...
what are you all up to?

Ok, no problems here and you're not in trouble.
I'm about to head home and do some study.

ah cool

@Tyyppi_77 I'm thinking I might not need to worry about the GC & stuff so much since I'm not building a boundless voxel game.
@PearsonArtPhoto and this is a relief in a way, hahaha

user92578
5:16 PM
I'm grinding XP in Minecraft, watching YouTube and chatting with you guys on the other monitor

@doppelgreener btw, why were you wanting to see that profile?

@Typhon mainly i wanted to aware of if there was anything i should be seriously concerned about.

like impersonation?

5:41 PM
@doppelgreener everything ok?

6:11 PM
Yep, just heading home. :) That brb became more extended than I intended

2 hours later…
7:53 PM
sorry if you guys thought I was trolling earlier. I was just trying to be hinest.

8:44 PM
@Typhon thanks for clarifying. there seemed to be a lot of stuff you were saying that wasn't quite adding up, but maybe it was just your conversational style possibly doing you a disfavour.

oh doppel changed the photo

ye!
pride month is over so it's back to being green diamond

If I don't enlarge the photo, it seems a praying mantis for me...I don't know why XD

@doppelgreener yeah probably. Plus, I only recently changed my username so it kind of confused me when people kept saying I was duck. I thought they were referring to the page I linked.
i forgot i changed it

8:52 PM
oh yeah, that was a while ago wasn't it?

was it?
seemed like only a couple weeks ago

i think so
oh huh
my sense of time might be distorted, i've had a lot going on recently

of course... time flies
perhaps there is local time dilation on Earth?

:O !!!
maybe...!!!

due to a black hole like in some sci-fi movie?
meh
that's highly unlikely

8:54 PM
It's still 2012, no? When the world ended?

@Mithrandir hardy har har
the mayans weren't referring to the destruction of the Earth

like in that episode of stargate

in other words: "the stupidity singularity"
on a less political note...

4Chan was made that year if memory serves right

8:56 PM
yeah yes please

uuh
why?

things just got a bit too political
4chan was made in 2003 i think

tbh, 90% of america agree that the reelection was pretty bad of an idea.
in hindsight

[citation needed] on stats like that

this isnt a court or a wiki article
its a casual conversation

8:58 PM
yeah and i'm casually calling out that the statistic is probably made up

fair point

0
Q: Using a shader for a simple alpha mask/stencil

SuperJerI have 2 RenderTarget2D's, each with alpha layers, each with identical resolutions, and a surface type of Color. One is the base texture, and the other is the texture I want to use to further mask the base texture. I'm trying this out with a common stencil shader that's been tossed about here o...

a better way to put it is that im sure a lot of people who voted for him the first time didnt think it through, didnt like him, yet still reelected him because "i dont like the other candidate"
not a statistic
just saying my view of how it went down

ok, i can respect that pov
america doesn't have the neatest political system

yeah
and a lot of people agree that obama had to tone down a lot of his plans

9:01 PM
No country has a great political system.

cause well... they just didn't work
i would argue that there does not exist a great political system

the usa's suffers from some pretty severe problems some of its neighbours don't

it is the nature of humanity

like the lack of preferential voting

sounds familiar but what is that?

9:04 PM
in australia, if there's 5 parties, i can assign each one my 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th vote. my votes get tallied preferably toward the 1st party, then if that party can't get in they flow on to the 2nd party, and so on. it means i can vote for parties that may not make it into government without wasting my vote.

i see. So it is like linear interpolation but with votes?

it also comes with a separate system wherein if i cast just 1 vote, that 1 party i assigned my vote gets to say how the rest of my preferences are counted. basically, i am voting for them to control the rest of my voting preferences. in doing this, they bargain with other parties who will get in to implement policy on their behalf in exchange for votes, which means my interests are still looked after.

clever
so 1st pick gets 1 vote, 2nd pick gets 4/5 of a vote... etc.?

in america it's just: vote republican, or vote democrat, or waste your vote and ironically assist the party you disliked most (because they get 1 less vote opposition). it is a situation of low competition. here, every party has to compete with each other, and independents and minor parties regularly secure a few seats in the parliament.

honestly politics is largely a circus

9:08 PM
@Typhon nah it's more like... the votes get tallied up, then when the 1st preference cannot win a seat, my votes flow down to my 2nd preference, and if they cannot win a seat, down to my 3rd, etc.

but... what about when votes flow down to grant first pick a seat? do your votes get reversed back to the first pick?

various systems implement it differently. in australia your votes basically flow down until they find someone who wins a seat, preference just orders the likelihood of that happening. in stack exchange's voting system (which has 3 preferential votes) the lowest-scored party gets eliminated and their votes redistributed; you can see an example of that in the RPG.SE 2017 election 🔗

sounds complicated

it's pretty complicated
i don't know all the specifics, but it basically just means my votes for minority parties count

indeed

user92578
9:13 PM
yeah idk what it is with these two-party systems

imagine if there was an economic system that said...
you have $1. pick a soda, and if it's one of the best 2 sodas, you get your soda; if you picked any other soda, you get no soda but still lose your $1. btw the only 2 sodas that anyone gets are pepsi and coca-cola, so if you pay $1 for dr pepper you'll never get your dr pepper. so, what do you choose?
that's USA's voting system.
Australia's voting system is this:
you get $1. you can say what soda you'd like. it could be pepsi, coca-cola, dr pepper, fanta, LA Ice if you happen to like that stuff, mountain dew, or sprite. order them in order of preference. we'll give you the nearest preference people generally agree on, and it'll *probably* be either cola or pepsi, but if enough people agree with you it could be fanta or mountain dew. so maybe if there's enough agreement we'll still buy 20 bottles of coke for the party and 23 bottles of pepsi, but we'll probably still get a couple of bottles of sprite and fanta.

user92578
We talking about presidential elections or parliament elections?

for australia it's the same thing (federal elections), i think it's federal elections i'm talking about for the USA

user92578
Oh okay, those are different for us here and the voting system is different too

gotcha
in australia the head of state is the prime minister, which is a sorta-informal role who just happens to be someone the leading party chooses as their leader.

user92578
9:20 PM
Yeah that's kinda an issue of mine, voters here have no control of who is the actual prime minister

user92578
As the party chooses their leader and the leader becomes prime minister

user92578
The president here has very little power, most of which is ceremonial, like confirming the parliament and such.

user92578
Different political systems are very interesting

user92578
Each have their ups and dows

can we talk about gamedev?
or something? :-)
politics is a bit much in here
XD

9:55 PM
[renames room to Politics Development]

not in the mood

It's hard to remember the dark days of programming before Google...

10:09 PM
Well, I now can load in my goods at least! Still need to improve things by quite a bit more, but it's coming along, slowly...
Next phase is to display all of the information that exists on the screen, so it'll be a viewer. And then update the data in memory. Then saving off that memory to disk, and lastly, trying to add new features...
Oh, and I have a bit more memory to add, but I'll get there...
Something like 300 LOC for this...

user92578
10:45 PM
Looking good!

@doppelgreener oh man, I like Dr Pepper :/

11:05 PM
@doppelgreener I choose water because I reject sugar.
oh and everyone knows that would be an illuminati conspiracy anyways to shove artificial sweetener down everyone's throat
that stuff tastes nasty

Actually, I should probably finish loading the rest of the files before I finish the viewer...
Eh. Nah.

is that RPG maker?

No, WindowsForm, via Visual Studio

user92578
11:39 PM
You also gotta up your alphabetization game
