@djsmiley2k what's the problem?
@satibel stuff doesn't work xD
AD doesn't seem to be connecting/authenicating
outlook doesn't login/connect
I personally think EE has changed the IP range, and no one has checked the firewall properly
have you tried removing the device from the domain?
@Burgi half the affected systems aren't on the domain :D
it's not a domain issue
it's a firewall or dns issue
/me smacks head on wall
have you checked the firewall then?
the even worse bit? I can ping the damn address for one thing, but can't actually connect to it :/
@Burgi 'not my job' :/
11:20
@Nick Impossible? Substitution cipher? You call yourself a cyber security expert. Substitution cipher is one of the simplest ciphers out there. It can be broken with a dictionary attack, with hand by comparing appearance rates of the substituted letters with the rate they appear in the language they were written in.
No encryption ever is impossible to break, except OTP.
However, it gets broken if: the key was determined in a psuedo random way, gets exposed, or gets used more than once.
The only reason that's unbreakable is because it XORs a content with a random pad that's bigger than the text's bit size.
@Avery you probably mean exposed.
@satibel yeah
@Nick check this to see how easily we (well, satibel and avery and a couple of people) cracked it.
@Avery so, quite literally, without the key, it looks like random 1s and 0s
Look. I have nothing against you, but you're obviously mistaken at such a simple thing and still call yourself a cyber security expert. Please at least read something as basic as this to understand what cryptology is all about and what's breakable and what's not, and why.
And please don't call yourself something more than you are. Labels are there for expectations and assumptions. While you can fill your board of labels with as many labels as you want, unless you live up to the expectations and know what people assume you know, then people will stop taking you seriously. Learning is OK.
11:29
oh wow... tomorrow's world is coming back
@Nick I completely agree with @Avery here. She's absolutely right about the whole "labels and expectations" thing. If you're a noob, call yourself one, and keep learning till you're not one. But calling yourself a cyber security expert is not acceptable.
or just use github gists, like I do.
See, if someone looks at your profile, sees that you're an expert and asks you for help, you're most probably just going to end up with making stuff worse for them, because frankly, you don't know much about this stuff. Your goal should be to learn till you're actually considered an expert by other knowledgeable people.
@Rahul2001 @Avery is a she? Imposiburu!
Avery is a she.
11:33
@satibel She is
move on quickly
oh, just noticed on her profile. "http://my.pronoun.is/she?or=they"
Yeah, internet tends to assume everyone is a male so I have to point it out every now and then.
digging backwards into chat, I see that someone did post about frequency analysis. Also, we don't encrypt passwords. We 1) hash them on serverside using something like SHA256 or SHA512. 2) generate them randomly with either noise generated by user or with a random/psuedorandom algorithm.
Encryption isn't a part of passwords on both user end and server end.
11:41
@djsmiley2k turn the firewall off to rule it out (pun intended)?
@Avery also breakable
@djsmiley2k see my message below it. It's unbreakable if done right, but it's not convenient to do it right.
@Nick Encryption is used to transfer passwords from the client to the server.
@DavidPostill ...
@Avery unbreakable if done right....
@Rahul2001 and TLS is used for that.
11:43
Indeed
I have a problem with this statement, I'm just not sure what it is yet.
Also, learn that people on the internet will label themselves with whatever the hell they want, that doesn't make it a fact (I'm talking about @Nick here btw, nothing else.)
@djsmiley2k No, but it misleads many
@djsmiley2k I like to assume that labels on stack are real.
@Avery I assume nothing is real until I confirm it myself.
especially things which claim something, which when untrue, could be baaaaaaad
Trust, but Verify.
@djsmiley2k Shouldn't that be the other way around? Verify then Trust?
11:47
@djsmiley2k I find it rude to go to someone experienced (say, you) and ask them to prove that they know their job.
@Avery I don't.
:/
@Avery well, statistically it's almost safe.
I prove it...
by doing the things I do.
You know I know some linux, because I've shown you
I know you know programming, because you've shown me
11:48
2017.
@satibel lets not go over this again.
@satibel So is Russian Roulette ...
.... did you just make a 'You wouldn't steal a car' comparison?
oh, more females o/ one day we'll get 50-50, I hope.
I don't think that'll ever happen
Might get close, but in my experience, females are better in other roles :/
11:51
@djsmiley2k That's what they said about women being able to vote ...
Same way 80% of this room is left handed.
I hope we get 50-50 workforce in road construction
@DavidPostill lol
@OliverSalzburg I want more Male Nursery Nurses and Midwifes, but hey.
After all, we all drive on the roads. We should have woman building them so that their interests are being properly valued
More female models for male underwear please!
2
More female (Body?) builders.
11:52
Bridge the gap people!
Thigh Gaps for Men!
Now we're talking
er...
@Burgi weird enough yet?
it doesn't work
men have extra parts that mean a "thigh gap" pic doesn't work
11:55
@djsmiley2k the few female devs I know are really good, same with mechanics. Probably because they have to really like the job to bear with the males.
@OliverSalzburg <well, there's always boyshorts>
@Burgi Allow me to fix that for you
Men have extra parts, meaning the thigh gap is even more important.
@djsmiley2k 0_0
@satibel and unfortunately, to be taken seriously
@Rahul2001 :D
remind me again how we ended up here and with me thinking about the mechanics of things that i don't want to
:(
@Burgi I was surprised that avery was a woman.
we have this conversation daily. its getting boring and marginally offensive towards poor @Avery
I don't get why it's such a big deal. How does it matter, whether you're a girl or a guy or whatever on the internet? It shouldn't change the way you behave or talk, so who cares?
12:03
it's not a big deal, just that for whatever reason, I thought she was a guy, so I was surprised. </case>
@Avery sorry if I offended you or something, didn't mean to be rude. ^^
I'm used to it.
@Avery Originally, I wanted to write something else, but I guess that would get me kicked in this room
@OliverSalzburg meh, I'm not preventing anyone from saying anything ALA it's not a personal attack.
oh and @Nick, try implementing something similar to CBC to your encryption. That'd make it a bit more secure.
Okay, guys, let's sort this out once and for all
17 mins ago, by djsmiley2k
Might get close, but in my experience, females are better in other roles :/
This is by no means appropriate for chat
Before sending a message, please make sure that it's not something that has the potential to make anyone uncomfortable
2
12:09
@OliverSalzburg I don't see what's funny here
This is supposed to an accepting and welcoming community
@Rahul2001 Everything is offensive to someone
Someone may find it offensive that you're not ending your sentences properly with a .
@OliverSalzburg You're making the same argument that @qasdfdsaq used to make back in the day
Say nothing that can be offensive to someone sensible
@Rahul2001 Who says what is sensible?
There are many different cultures. What I find funny as a German, might be offensive to you and vice versa
And the censorship brought on by such an approach is pretty offensive in itself
depends what he means. If he had bad experience with female IT people, he can say that, in his experience, they are better in some other role (e.g. manager or whatever else.).
Meh
You assumed the incorrect gender for a user, got corrected, end the conversation at that
12:13
I obviously understand your point. But it's something that you could argue to death over
Why do we need to argue about this?
Because we have different opinions and it's fun
@OliverSalzburg it's not fun for everyone involved, which is what I've been trying to say
2
Then don't argue
2 mins ago, by Rahul2001
Why do we need to argue about this?
12:16
Yeah, you asked, I answered :D
I'm done here
Folks, just please be decent and sensible.
@DavidPostill i have a penguin today that has the same question as last week but has your answer on it
@Burgi lol
Are you getting these jokes from Penguin biscuit wrappers?
yes
last week the answer was "beak-ini"
today it is "flipper-flops"

@bwDraco To reduce cost they import from Malaysia and get adapter from Russia. I have not idea exactly... We have option to get product from gray import which does not include Samsung charger, but rather some China no-name one. It also does not have OS in hebrew and OTA updates are an issue. Then there is this one that I bought. They also give extended warranty on this one...

Ubereats are retarded
uber is a scam

14:20
At least the main taxi-driving part of the company works
i pre-booked a taxi with them on saturday night and it quoted me £11-£14
Saturday night is the worst time to get an uber
uber has shady business practises all around
i got home and checked on sunday morning and discovered they'd charged me £35
14:24
0_0
Surge pricing ftw.
you shouldn't have surge pricing if you pre-book
i'm going to use a local firm from now on
what about ola?
Never touch Uber with a bargepole at peak times - problem solved
Real taxis don't surge price, but often cost more than Uber off-peak
And can be hard to get hold of at peak times
But hey that's how supply and demand works...
oh ffs why doesn't Theresa May resign?
3
14:32
lol
bye bye home time!!
That's the whole point of surge pricing: to reduce demand by limiting it to those who have a pressing need for a car and increasing supply so that those willing to pay the surge price can get rapid service.
@Burgi lol
@bwDraco but i had pre-booked and been given a much lower price
i won't be using them again
i'm pretty sure what they did is against some UK/EU law
14:52
@NotDog ouch, so many typos (or rather lack of commas etc).
@Avery they couldn't afford it given the various cuts.
Surge pricing feels like a greedy practice, trying to make as much money as possible from desperate people..
It's basic business.
Uber should've said the correct price, but you can't really yell at uber for having a surge price system.
5x prices doesn't feel like that
As I said, supply and demand.
15:00
@jokerdino Sorta, but again, supply and demand. More people are going to be willing to drive at obnoxious times if they're getting paid more for it, else all the drivers would just go home at 6pm and there'd be no ubers for anyone to take
@Avery Twitter 140 character limit ftw.
@NotDog the tweet could use less emojis and more commas.
@Avery Agreed.
@jokerdino The other side of supply and demand is to discourage people who don't want to pay that much from taking service so what little is left can make more money
It's no different to airline tickets or hotel prices, they all vary 5x or more when it's busy. IMO it's unfair Uber gets flack for making it clear to customers.
lol but airlines or hotels don't change pricing after you have booked.
Heck, just looking at flights to India next week BA is listing £782 for a 7am flight and £2022 for a 6am flight.
@jokerdino Well... yeah, but they throw you off kicking and screaming with blood in your face after you've booked
lol
they are all shady
15:06
So it's not like they're saints or anything
I am not really defending them either.
They are all scammy
Did Rahul rage quit?
What annoys me with airlines is they only show price comparisons for simple itineraries, as soon as you try to do something remotely complex it's impossible to compare prices, it just forces you to select every flight and go to checkout before displaying a price, and won't tell you if it's 75% cheaper if you go 10 minutes earlier unless you go through the whole booking process again selecting that flight yourself
And BA's website falls over and dies if you try do more than one thing at a time so it usually ends up taking six hours or so to make a booking
@jokerdino I think it's past his bedtime
No, it's about supper time
Hmm, indeed, just checked and 20:38:41 IST isn't that late
Though when I was a kid...
... go on
15:10
My parents would make me go to bed at 8pm and I'd get up again at midnight and sneak out?
@jokerdino cats sleep all day anyway
yeah
@NotDog I expected a lot more lol

Q: Don't Switch to Speakers When Bluetooth Goes Out of Range

Sandy GiffordSo here I am at work, rocking out to Pandora, when I decide "Hey! I could really use some water". So I carelessly put my cheap-o Bluetooth headphones around my neck and head off to the water fountain. 30 seconds later my co-workers get blasted by Arctic Monkeys. Is there any way to keep audio ...

@Bob still awake?
I guess not.
My charger thing arrived. It doesn't seem very explosive.
It's not very heavy, and very un-dense.
It's about twice the size of my Anker powercore 10000 but also lower capacity.
Also it charges at 5v 2A right up till it's totally full, there's no slow down or drop off as it trickle charges. So it does seem deliberately engineered for very high current.
