@Tezz @LakshmiNarayanan I just posted an answer related to Purva Mimamsa:
0
A: Does Hindu morality come from scripture or is it the other way round?

Keshav SrinivasanMorality comes from scripture. For starters, here is what Adi Shankaracharya says in this section of his Brahma Sutra Bhashya, which is actually about the subject of animal sacrifice: [The reasoning criticizing animal sacrifice] is not valid, because our knowledge of what is duty and the con...

4:49 AM
@KeshavSrinivasan Oh ok nice!... I was also thinking to post same answer to that question if it remains unanswered for long time..

@KeshavSrinivasan A lot of the injunctions on Moral Behaviour is smriti correct?

@LakshmiNarayanan Yeah, the injunctions in the Vedas mainly focus on Yagnas, whereas the injunctions in Smriti focus on other types of moral and immoral behavior.

@KeshavSrinivasan So operationally speaking, Moral Injunctions are not Apaurusheya

@LakshmiNarayanan Well, Smritis are not Apaurusheya, but the authority of Smriti is derived from the authority of Shruti.
@LakshmiNarayanan See Adhyaya 1 Pada 3 of the Purva Mimamsa Sutras for more details.

5:08 AM
@KeshavSrinivasan taking a look.
@KeshavSrinivasan So Argument 1 is that Smriti composers are well versed in Vedas so why would they deceive. This somehow is not satisfactory because deception can be unintentional - one possible example mechanism for the rising of this deception could be that they are not just Veda Seshas in life they have other influences that are working as well that affects their "Remembrance" cognition.
@KeshavSrinivasan The second Argument given is based on utility of prescribed injunction weighed intently in terms of social acceptance of said injunction. It is in essence an appeal to common sense! The argument is essentially, "Injunction is good because it is useful to society at large" but that is not enough to make the case that these injunctions cannot change with time since it is obvious that society itself changes with time.

5:27 AM
@LakshmiNarayanan What are you reading, the Shabara Bhashya or what?

5:48 AM
@KeshavSrinivasan yeah Adhyaya 1 Pada 3

@Tezz Yes. read that chapter.

@TheDestroyer Ok... are you answering that question...?...

@SwiftPushkar Oh ok... you can also compile various sources in a single answer...

@SwiftPushkar hello
I didn't found second story

@TriyugiNarayanMani - there is no second story , the chapter itself contains two different stories one is of 1) janameyjaya 2) Yájnawalkya

@SwiftPushkar Can you mention the verse where Janamejaya is mentioned wrt division of Yajus?

@TriyugiNarayanMani -Arent you getting my point ?? You should mention the verse numbers in your answer , pls. dont make unnecessary arguments , Improve your answer !

@SwiftPushkar Why are you talking like this. And yes I am not getting your point. may be I am not understanding or may be you are not describing well.
@SwiftPushkar I am arguing because not getting your point.

@Tezz @SwiftPushkar Do you know any good book written by expert which describes various Hindu Sampradayas? (Preferably in Hindi)

@Pandya No, I don't know any such books. ..

@Pandya - I will search for that :)

ok

10:38 AM
Btw, I want to ask a question like "What's the first incident of Akashvani in scriptures?" how about it?

@Pandya - Yeah good question , probably , Rushies hearing some mantras or prophasis from vedic period :)

Oh! Actually @KeshavSrinivasan has written peerless answer to this question!
@SwiftPushkar I think Akashvani is different from Rishis' hearing Shruti i.e Vedic hymns.

@Pandya - yes , thats a nice short one , but if you want more authoritative description and more inside knowledge then a good comprehensive book is must , i think there may be some good books on market , but not mentioned on web. :)
@Pandya - yeah , know that , but i was just pointing towards the ancient i.e. as you have asked first incident , so .. and of course its not a akashwani , but similar type , like Yagnavalkya hearing shulka yajurveda from sun

@SwiftPushkar Yes that's why I'm looking for...

10:55 AM
@Pandya - The one problem will arose in your question is that , (if somebody mentions one ) then how we surely will be able to know that is the first Akashwani incidence ? there is possibility some similar incidences happenings which might not go recorded or not passed down :)

Alp Sankhya In the meantime Jalandhar went to Parvati disguised as Lord Shiva, but was recognized by her. Being enchanted by the beauty of goddess Parvati, he looked at her with his evil intentions, but was immobilized by her wrath. Goddess Parvati then went to Lord Vishnu and narrated the whole tale. 5:24 PM
@LakshmiNarayanan First of all, Sutra 1 is a Purvapaksha Sutra, so nothing in Shabara's commentary on that Sutra should be taken as representing Shabara's view. Now coming to Shabara's commentary on Sutra 2, it's not giving some kind of utilitarian defense of morality. It's discussing a subject more complicated than that. It has to do with what I told you before about the hierarchy of Pramanas and the power of scripture to speak about things which already exist.

5:38 PM
@LakshmiNarayanan When you do an action, it has two kinds of effects, physical effects and effects in the unseen world. The physical effects of an action can be gleamed through perception and inference, whereas scripture can only give information concerning the effects of actions in the unseen world, since that cannot be known through perception and inference.
@LakshmiNarayanan So Hindu scripture can't give an injunction like "Don't hit your head with a coconut, because then you'll feel pain." Because that's not a subject relevant to morality, it's talking about the physical effect of an action.

@SwiftPushkar many Anti Hindu posts are coming these days.

@TheDestroyer - Yes , We can see increase in such a kind of activity from last 1 month , but we will defend all those no matter how much they are in numbers , & i also wonder why 👍👍💐😊

@LakshmiNarayanan But just as the Purva Mimamsa school says that Hindu scripture cannot give new information about objects that already exist, but can reference information about already-existing objects that can be gleaned from perception and inference, similarly it cannot give new information about the physical effects of your actions, but it can reference information about physical effects that can be gleaned from perception and inference.

5:58 PM
@LakshmiNarayanan What Shabara is saying on page 90 is that Smriti has two kinds statements: it has statements about morality, dealing with the unseen effects of actions, and then it has statements which reference information about the physical effects of actions which can be gleaned through perception and inference. Things like the digging of tanks fall under that category; it has nothing to do with morality, it just has to do with the physical effects of actions.

@TheDestroyer - I suspect that the users which are repeatedly asking such a questions (deliberately showing our Scripture as bad or wrong) are already very well familiar with the users of this and with and are confidently commenting. Even i wasn't so confident in asking / answering / commenting after 6 months . So they seems to be well prepared .

Q: How do non-vedanta darshanas deal with shruti statements about Brahman?

AksVedanta schools extensively deal with concept of brahman. What do non-vedanta schools like nyaya-vaishesika, samkhya-yoga etc say about shruti statements about Brahman? How do they reconsile their atomism or dualism with shruti statements?

@RakeshJoshi - Paithan is the name of the city , which is near aurangabad , where the Gyaneshvar pathashala is 😊

Q: Did Lord Vishnu have 3 wives?

Alp Sankhya Goddess Sarasvati, by the standard mythological authorities, is the wife of Lord Brahma. Q: What food is forbidden in the Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita?

Surya Kanta Bose ChowdhuryCharaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita are two major ancient Hindu texts on health related subjects, include many chapters on the role of diet and personal needs of an individual.The 2 texts give a list of food considered healthy and unhealthy. What food is forbidden in these texts?

@Yogi - BTW the answer is ready with me , worked a lot since last night but Its not clear what exactly OP wants & not responding as well 😀

@SwiftPushkar I think this is the main question 'What food is forbidden in these texts'

So you can just give him food items, there are some exceptions afa I've heard Curd is to be avoided at night and can be consumed at day time so you can give such exceptions separately.
@SwiftPushkar ^^

@Yogi - Yeah , but I have gone through entire book its not saying anything abt. forbidden food iteams , but recommend's to avoid bad food & to avoid certain iteams according to roga or pravrutti

7:46 PM
@SwiftPushkar Oh both the samhitas?

@Yogi - but curd is to be avoided at night time's only , its not in forbidden list , and the book isn't stating any food iteams to be forbidden either like some grains , veg , etc
@Yogi - no charak only , haven't got time to see sushruta

@SwiftPushkar Then I think you should wait and go through the other samhita, and if you don't find any exhaustive list then just post an answer with the certain item list.

@Yogi - Yes that's the best option 👍👍 And u will surprised to know that charak samhita actually not anyhow dening consumption of meat & wine , but just saying only abt. Properties of different types. I am strict vegetarian+ no sura either though

@SwiftPushkar Yeah @KeshavSrinivasan Gave me some proofs saying that Kshatriyas can drink, Drinking is forbidden for Bramhanas only.

@Yogi To be clear, Kumarila Bhatta says that Kshatriyas are only allowed to drink certain kinds of alcohol, not all alcohol.

7:55 PM
@SwiftPushkar None of our scriptures ban meat or alcohol consumption, they just advice us to avoid it because it has bad gunas qualities and as we all know we are what we eat!
@KeshavSrinivasan Yeah I can post a question on that

@Yogi - Yeah , with u on that 👍

@Yogi Yeah, that would be good. I can post an answer quoting the relevant passage from the Tantra Vartika.

@KeshavSrinivasan What is Tantra Vartika
I thought the citation by Kumarila Bhatta was a part of Mbh

@Yogi It's one of Kumarila Bhatta's commentaries on the Purva Mimamsa Sutras.

@KeshavSrinivasan Oh okay

8:00 PM
@Yogi Well, the context is that Kumarila Bhatta is discussing a Mahabharata passage that describes Krishna and Arjuna drinking alcohol, and he shows that they are drinking the kind of alcohol that's allowed for Kshatriyas rather than the forbidden kind.

@KeshavSrinivasan - Yeah , soma is also different , its much like stimulant than intoxicated drink

@KeshavSrinivasan I just created a tag 'Alcohol' :D hinduism.stackexchange.com/questions/18770/…
