@Bob Thanks man. I realise on the mobile, this chatroom doesn't allow me to reply directly. Much appreciated.

Bob
@KimStacks You can tap a message and use the reply button on the top-left, assuming you're on the new mobile UI
@KimStacks Oh, I just realised I didn't give you a specific recommendation... if you want standard x86 hardware in a small box, a NUC is good. The RPi obviously gets you ARM, which isn't bad these days but can still be a bit fiddlier.
Also a RPi only has HDMI, so watch out for that if you have a 4k screen.
4k is best with DisplayPort
HDMI 2.0 (which the RPi doesn't have) should also be able to do 4k@60Hz but also fewer displays support HDMI 2.0
With DP you need at least DP 1.2, fairly common these days
Obviously costs much more than a RPi -- it's up to you to decide if it's worth it :P

12:41 AM
@Bob Did you see the Intel Compute Card? kind of interesting; modern Core m5 or Atom or Celery (depending on the SKU) with a smallish SSD, RAM and I/O incl. WiFi and Ethernet and various USB-* on a tiny little phone-sized card, for implementation in "slide-in" form factors like laptop shells, refrigerators, set-top boxes, or HTPCs
comparable to last gen's standard full-fat laptop blah but lower power

So, the owner of the neighboring apartment agreed to pay for a plumber to fix the mess, but his plumber had only Thursday free.

@ThatRussianGuy wat mess?
poop mess?

I just have to cross my fingers and expect neighbor to not be a bath fan... (And not poop at all for 3 days)
yesterday, by That Russian Guy
I return to work tomorrow. Today at 1 AM I woke up to water dripping from my bathroom's ceiling. More specifically, the lamp socket.

Bob
@allquixotic more like a tablet than a laptop, I think. "full-fat" laptops went with about 17W TDP. Those SoCs are more like 5W TDP.
@allquixotic But yea, I did see it. Was interesting. Could be a good option for @KimStacks, depending on pricing.

@Bob Current Intel standard laptop processors operate at a 15W TDP, but have alternate modes for 7.5W (cTDP down) and 25W (cTDP up).
That's for the Intel U-series processors. H-series processors, intended for AIO and high-performance mobile systems (read: gaming laptop), operate at a 45W TDP (or 47W before Skylake).
Y-series Core processors operate anywhere between 4.5W and 11.5W, depending on configuration. Atom-type Celeron and Pentium processors operate at 6W.

Bob
1:01 AM
@bwDraco Yea, but these days I'd call the U-series "full-fat" as in what you'd likely see on a 'typical' laptop. Which physically look like almost-ultrabooks.
Gaming would be more like "extra-fat" :P

U-type is the standard Intel mobile processor these days.

1:27 AM
@KimStacks if you don't need the latest hardware - there's a few passive x86 systems that are relatively cheap that might be an option

Also consider a modular PSU. If you need a bigger one, just replace the PSU block, plug your cables back in, and you're golden
@OliverSalzburg: It looks like Corsair HXi, AXi, and RM supplies use the same cables: corsair.com/en-us/landing/psu-cable-compatibility
So, I guess there will not be compatibility issues. There will be no need to unplug cables from machine components when upgrading.

4:13 AM
AARGH! The Lenovo Yoga Mode Control service (ymc) sometimes goes to high CPU usage after resume. I have to restart it to fix the problem. Fortunately, it's easy to do this in PowerShell (elevation required): Restart-Service ymc. (@BenN)
The problem is, this service is required for the alternate modes (tent, tablet, stand) to function correctly.

@FleetCommand Eh... not really?
I mean. It's computing-related.
That's more than I can say for some questions.

hi

Bob
Sometimes I really want to downvote a comment...

@Bob If it's bad enough flag it as chatter
nuked is better than down voted anyway :D

Bob
@GypsySpellweaver It's trying to raise a concern with the answer, so it's a valid comment... except apparently the commentor is missing the entire point of the answer.
I honestly don't know how I can possibly make it clearer.

Your first mistake is thinking people can read - some just can't :(

Bob
6:13 AM
like... "it's not possible to do that" but but I just did!

user226528
@Bob The problem with that comment is that it is 100% accurate. This degree of accuracy may hide other problems with it, like relevance.

I don't know if it's good or bad, but that user name stands out in my memory somewhere. :|

Bob
@GypsySpellweaver Fairly active user with good contributions.
I don't have an issue with the user.

Just that's an unusual enough name to stick in my memory
Who knows maybe I just ran across it a bunch when doing the HTTPS image fixes.

6:33 AM
@Bob I get a 404 :(

Bob
@MichaelFrank I don't :P open it in a private window, it's probably the stupid ms sso messing it up

@MichaelFrank I don't

Ahh, yea... incognito works fine.
I like how there's nothing on the "What to do now" tab.

7:07 AM
how nice if public bathrooms are ubiquitous!

Hello!
Why isn't @Burgi pingable?
Did he change his username?
@Burgi dude. Why ain't you in the ping autocomplete tab list thingy?

@Burgi is in mine.

@Burgi test ping

@All Please do not ping @Burgi
curiously, I'll be on topic for once.
how do I revert my gateway after changing the default gateway via route in windows? It should be batch/psable.

Bob
@satibel delete the route you added
@satibel was the original static or configured via DHCP?

@Bob I don't know, it will be deployed on personal laptops.
@Bob well, I deleted 0.0.0.0 and it didn't go well :p

Bob
hm
@satibel maybe look at what openvpn does

openvpn uses a low metric virtual adapter IIRC
I could probably get the previous value, save it in a variable, and make the undo script change the route to the content of that variable.
that seems error prone but I have no other idea. CC @bob

Bob
@satibel I'll test a couple things later :P

7:57 AM
morning

@satibel why did u change it

wtf...

.... php again?

8:01 AM
@djsmiley2k we have 2 routers, 1 LTE with QOS and 1 DSL, I want to switch the people who upload big files to the LTE. But once they get home, they need to be able to use their home router.

the council tax customer services line has cut me off 5 times in a row

@satibel switch them, based on what tho
they go 'i'm gonna upload a large file' and you switch them over?

"sorry we are unable to take your call at this due to long wait times"

it actually sounds like you need a router doing balancing in front of those two connections

then cuts me off!

8:02 AM
@Burgi ah yeah joys
we have a few 3rd parties with soemthing simular

@djsmiley2k I make a batch for them, they execute it when they need to upload.

'hi, we are currently busy, good bye'
youre like. :/

i'm considering joining twitter just to complain at the council

And the uploads are all going to the same place, or all over the place?

If they consciously execute those batches ... what's your problem?

8:04 AM
@djsmiley2k all over, actually, only a few ftp, mail, google drive, one drive and a few other file services.

hmmmm
I still think you're going about this the wrong way

but switching gateways with a script will be faster.

i guessing it lags out the DSL?

"That IT person told me I should execute this before I upload stuff but it works if I don't execute it. So I don't bother."

4G we have 15megs upload, ADSL, 0.5-1meg

8:05 AM
@Seth also an isue
@satibel what's the 'default' setup, before they rtun anything, dhcp?

@Seth the IT guy says it takes 15 times less if I do that.

fracking SIX TIMES now
i want to bloody queue!

work time!

Yes but it works and I get to drink more coffee because I'm busy waiting for the upload!

@djsmiley2k dhcp, but I prefer to be sure with custom setups.

8:07 AM

so dirty batch it will.

Bob
@satibel funny that... I have literally the exact same situation at home :P
but they're on separate interfaces

Anyway. You said you wrote a script that changes the GW depending on whenever it's set to "upload" or not. Short of remembering what you set yourself (even if it's error prone) you don't really have any option. Rebooting would reset the system assuming you don't use the -p switch.

Bob
if it's short term I just disable the ADSL interface
long term I use a complex mess of SOCKS proxies and interface metrics to get some programs to go one way and other programs the other way :P

Wouldn't it be easier to get a bigger pipe long-long term?

8:15 AM
set newGW=%1
:switch
for /f "tokens=1-6" %a in ('route -4 print 0.0.0.0') do @if "%f"=="" if "%a"=="%b" setx "oldGW=%c"
route CHANGE 0.0.0.0 MASK 0.0.0.0 %newGW%
goto EOF
:revert
route CHANGE 0.0.0.0 MASK 0.0.0.0 %oldGW%
goto EOF
done.

Bob
@Seth Most of us are constrained by both the laws of physics and the laws of man.
i.e. I can't just magic up "a bigger pipe"
Usually when LTE becomes the connection of choice for bulk uploads the assumption is that a higher-bandwidth wired connection is simply not possible.
@satibel If it's DHCP (as most laptop users will be) simply delete the gateway you add and then do a ipconfig /renew after.

fiber is 600€/month, lte is 30€/mo

10 times in a fracking row!!!!!!!!!

Bob
Fibre is $∞ a month.

what is the point in councils?

8:19 AM
@Burgi to council, not answer the damn phone, nor chase the rats that eat the wires.

OMFG! i'm in a queue!

@satibel with that tiny upload the DSL is unlikely going to have a bigger download than the LTE connection. So why not switch to the LTE connection for all the stuff? If it's limited traffic?

Bob
ls

i almost feel sorry for the poor council worker that is going to receive both barrels of my wrath
almost

Bob
@Seth LTE latency can be unpredictably high.

8:25 AM
@Seth well, if we put everybody on the LTE, the poor thing might collapse.
also, managing the existing network is easier.

i had a simple query which has now turned into an hour long job
they've nearly won... i'm going to have to hang up soon i have a meeting at half past

8:42 AM
-"hello, cecilia here"
-"sorry, I have a meeting, got to go. *click*"

I presume the LTE has some reason you don't just use it all the time btw?

@djsmiley2k I want to use it only for a few people, because it's soft metered.

there's no way to detect a large upload before it happens either, hmmm

like 100GB, after that we get 3g

you could put them both behind some proxy, and put certain hosts (which you've already mentioned) over the LTE...
Just trying to warn you, people will screw this up, badly
like 'I was at home but I wanted to use that faster connection you have at work, so I clicked it and now my toaster blew up!'

8:49 AM
@djsmiley2k meh, 5 minutes once or twice.

@satibel hmm

@Burgi rahul.tech got rid of <pre> \o/

@Rahul2001 that was <pre>mature.

Lol

9:07 AM
@Rahul2001 finally
congrats

9:54 AM
what on earth is a "preview of quality rollup"?

11am
1min silence

10:10 AM
But there's still a pre tag in it @Rahul2001?
But nice source. ;)

10:26 AM
Wow.. so apparently the save photo feature in Snapchat doesn't record the year that an image was saved... So now half my wife's photos were taking in the year 1950...

=)
such pros
that'll be because origianlly snapchat's would only last 30sec
so you'd never need year infomation

They're pretty terrible at app development. Originally the android version took a screenshot instead of capturing the actual camera stream to get the picture.

they still don't have a business model

wut? LOL
@Burgi wasn't the business model 'Get brought by facebook, $$$$$$' ?

lol, yes
its a shame facebook had already bought instagram

10:32 AM
Except Facebook kinda just went "Huh... those are cool ideas. Let's do that in house instead..."

i think its going to be hilarious when the VCs get bored with bankrolling twitter
they've never made a profit or broke even

I found the photos my daughter took the other day...

not sure if a deep introspective on the early human condition or just crap...

Well, at least she's consistent! (She's also a couple months from turning 2)

@Burgi Did u see the idea of the users buying shares?
I lol'd
My daughter takes selfies a lot
but normally far too close to make out what she's actually doing

10:38 AM
@Seth the complete body used to be wrapped in pre

@djsmiley2k the shares are $18.23 each

@MichaelFrank there's something in it... oh, it's just that my screen is dusty.

@MichaelFrank lol

For those curious - this is the baking workshop for the baking school my employers just bought i.imgur.com/mv3mD5V.jpg I suggest sunglasses be worn on account of the sunny baby poop yellow paint on the floor

does it still smell of vom?

10:46 AM
I feel like that's a common colour for industrial kitchen floors...

@MichaelFrank i thought white would be better, to show up the spills

It's good for showing spillages (unless it is baby poop) ;)

@Burgi Can't see milk or flour on white.

@Burgi There are lots of white foodstuffs - flour, sugar, rice, white vinegar, milk, ...

there are lots of yellow foods too

10:48 AM
Hmm, I hardly noticed. Not sure if its cause the smell went away or because I got used to it

@DavidPostill blue is best colour
hense why the plasters are blue
there's no naturally blue foods
not the same blue we produce things as, anyway

Bob
@JourneymanGeek looks orange

@Bob I think you need to adjust your screen ;p

@djsmiley2k blueberries, blue grapes, lingcod, blue potato, blue cheese, ...

Bob
@JourneymanGeek what?
#C28D1A
looks pretty orange to me

10:57 AM
Its baby poop yellow ._.
Well its orangy maybe

Which usually don't have that industrial "ultrabright" blue but rather a more darker one so they should somewhat be noticeable.

Bob
A lighter orange, maybe, but far too much red in it to be yellow.

I don't get why people do "integrate image" edits but don't at the same time add a sensible description. :/

btw, if someone wants the scripts for switching gateways.
https://gist.github.com/kmoulins/82211b53dbdb2300c3d5cb6d76b91de1

@Seth I didn't realise I could until this year ;p

11:02 AM
cc @Bob

@Seth to the image, or to the edit?

Bob
@satibel at some point I'll see if I can figure out a bettererer way :P

@DavidPostill none of these are actually blue tho, generally (I've not checked em all)

The image. [![enter Description][1]][1]. If you dig up posts from 2015 to inline an image at least give it an actual Description instead of the default text.
Or just as the edit I just saw, remove the actual description from the original post.

> It turns out that there are a few naturally-occurring blue foods out there for use in baking competitions, including blueberries, blue potatoes, blue corn, blue quandong, Kusagi berries and even blue mushrooms.

11:08 AM
The joy of "We totally did everything to make that feature not work ... no make it work" kinds of jobs is the headache you get.

Which is the best URL shortner besides g.co?
I'm wondering how to get t.co

tinyurl?

Is there anything shorter?

Bob
@satibel can't you just add it as a new route with lower metric, and then delete it after?

Maybe I'll make one. How do I do that?

11:09 AM
That depends on what you expect from a shortener.

Bob
C:\WINDOWS\system32>route add 0.0.0.0 mask 0.0.0.0 192.168.2.3 metric 5
 OK!

C:\WINDOWS\system32>route delete 0.0.0.0 mask 0.0.0.0 192.168.2.3
 OK!
@satibel ^

@Seth extremely short name like l.nk/23
I want to make that.
@Bob uh, what are you doing here?

looks like netmask on windows

Bob
3 hours ago, by satibel
how do I revert my gateway after changing the default gateway via route in windows? It should be batch/psable.

11:11 AM
Not blue

@Nick There is a PHP script for that called URLs

most definately purple
Same way my Russian Blue cat, was.... grey

Blue Crayfish!
You can eat them.

@Rahul2001 what? ... are you like uh... mocking my knowledge of basic things.

@Nick What knowledge?

11:17 AM
XD
hahaha

@Rahul2001 You mean this one? yourls.org

@MichaelFrank yeah, I'd forgotten the name

Could you also tell me where to get a tld from Nikolia

@Nick gandi probably

@OliverSalzburg He said tld, not domain

11:19 AM
@MichaelFrank wow cool

I doubt anyone would have a spontaneous idea how to figure out why Office is lacking Skype for Business integration, right?

@Bob oooooh, I'm stoopid, I didn't know you could use mask on delete.

@OliverSalzburg the non-violence guy
@Rahul2001 hahahaha. Yes, I want to buy their tld

@Seth Is the addon turned off?

@Rahul2001 Oh shit, then let me take back my attempt to help because he was obviously making a mistake!

11:19 AM
TIL

@Seth it crashed, disabling the addin....

@OliverSalzburg hahahaha. Please don't XD

go to options -> disabled addins, re-enable it

Seriously though, we got fm.mg for the same purpose, got it through gandi as well
Their payment system is annoying, but they have very good coverage

If he's lucky it'll enable and stay enabled... If you're not lucky, it'll never turn back on.

11:20 AM
@Nick .... That's not a real country right?

Ever.

@JourneymanGeek It's the Kingdom of Nikolia

Fights at home...
GTG, won't be online for 5 or 6 hours, probably

Looks like it's enable. In the Options "Show Online Presence" is disable and grayed out. This is really driving me nuts.

stay safe

11:23 AM
@Rahul2001 I'm sorry bro. I know how it is. If you ever need to talk about it, I'm here. We have that room, provided Ravi unfreezes it.

@Seth version of outlook?
:37912057

Ah...IIwiki is a a wiki dedicated to providing players of the online, roleplaying and nation-simulator game NationStates. Meaning, Nikolia isn't real.

2013 with Lync 2013 patched on current patch level. Guess I'll dig into the customization we did next. We might have done something in the past to actively disable it.

yey copying from the url broke in chrome agaim ffs

I can't get the .nk tld :(

11:25 AM
what the hell is iiwiki?

@Nick do you just randomly google things, and instantly believe what you read?
@Burgi IIwiki is a a wiki dedicated to providing players of the online, roleplaying and nation-simulator game NationStates.
hmm
no more blockquote :(

Bob
@satibel I'm not 100% sure the lower metric default route works though. You'll need to test that.

Ah...IIwiki is a a wiki dedicated to providing players of the online, roleplaying and nation-simulator game NationStates. Meaning, Nikolia isn't real.
@djsmiley2k no, but also yes.

@Nick waaaait, you assumed at any point that was real?

...

11:26 AM
Wow, NationStates... That's a game I haven't heard of in a while.

so yes? XD

@JourneymanGeek yes, actually. when I saw the page for the .nk tld. It was very confusing. Becaus it said the tld was active but I couldn't find any registrars.

just create your own url shortener on a domain that actually has a meaning! Like short.horse or something (an actual TLD).

short.bus?

short.wang
real TLD. It's true.

11:29 AM
lol, these are awesome site names but these are so much longer than t.co or g.co
Are there any one letter tlds?
Why aren't those possible?
I'd want n.k

They are. Just go and pay the 50k+ (or whatever it currently is) to hand in a request and maybe you'll get it.
Usually you'd write up a good reason for it and "I need a URL shortener) probably isn't going to cut it. As for two letter TLDs ... most ccTLDs have two letters. It's up to the TLDs to decide whenever you have a minimum amount of letters for the domain itself.

@Bob doesn't work if the metric for the default is already the lowest :/

@Bob more classic fox...
> a workaround would be whoever developed this forum getting a brain.

Bob
@satibel is it 1? o.O
cause that's ... rare
like, I've never seen a default metric below 18 in the real world

@Bob actually in my case it's 11, as in 10(for interface)+1(for gateway).

Bob
11:38 AM
@satibel Ah. Hm.
*shrug*
@JourneymanGeek Funny thing that. I was reading the thread today. And I also have a forum with a feed that's empty if not logged in.

@Nick lol moneys

well ipconfig vs gui
*shrug*

IT'S A BUG
known bug
/me found it last week and my god it's terribad

Bob
oh piss off...
It's perfectly fine!
well that kinda was the point of a partition purely for the pagefile

https://www.icann.org/en/system/files/files/martens-to-jeffrey-12dec05-en.pdf

Does anyone know if this was taken seriously. Currently, u.com isn't active

11:50 AM
@JourneymanGeek MG is Madagascar.

@DavidPostill that's a real country, unlike nikolia and belgium

Bob
@JourneymanGeek how vulgar. we don't use that kind of language in this room!

@JourneymanGeek Well don't let facts get in the way of your claims ;p
