Umm @Martin-マーチン what does that thick black bar mean?

4:16 AM
@Martin-マーチン I'm so confused now

Why? I gave you sunglasses for the "cool" chemistry joke you posted

Oh, thank you!
That ain't my joke tho. Google gave it to me.
@Martin-マーチン I have a question. How do you link towards the tour page in comments to new users?

If you're spreading it, you're responsible, too ;)

Q: Comment Templates

M.A.R.Guidance is pretty important, and I'm going to write a meta post in some other meta about it soon. Long story short, if it weren't about guiding users, I wouldn't be writing this and you wouldn't be reading it. There are some things that are happening often enough in the main site that I feel li...

Oo thanks.
@Martin-マーチン is there any page that explains all the tricks and stuff you can add to comments, like links to tour, or help page?

hmmm, there should be something in the help centre
let me have a quick look

4:29 AM
I'm trying to format a welcome message of my own to greet new users, so I need to make it as helpful as possible.

I'm using Welcome to Chemistry.SE! Take the [tour] to get familiar with this site. Mathematical expressions and equations can be [formatted](http://meta.chemistry.stackexchange.com/q/86) using $\LaTeX$ syntax.

Thats a nice welcome message, although I prefer to be original and make my own message. Thanks for the link, I'll check out all the links in it.
And how did you change font in that "Welcome to Chemistry SE! ..." message?
Hey @blue

Hi! Could someone check if they can answer this question? chemistry.stackexchange.com/questions/75689/…

@blue I dropped a comment. Do check.

Yup, basically what I said in the last para :)

Thanks

@PrittBalagopal posted it as code with code -> ... ` <- code`
haha... doesn't work
enclose the code statements in `

Oo thanks @Martin-マーチン
Wait lemme try: I just typed lol.
Ahh it works

Hey everyone (all 2 of you ;)
So, is there a shortcut to link to the homework policy (that meta post we use) from a comment? Something like [help] for the help center? @Pritt 's question above about the tour page made me think of this.

5:43 AM
nope

Hey guys, I was checking out the users page and found 11,545 one-rep users!!

Wow! How many >1 rep users does that make?
-7
Q: Is 4-Methy chlorobenzene an IUPAC name?

Pratham Prakash GuptaPlease also add some source/reference supporting your answer.

I voted to vote this as off-topic as no effort (i.e. other possibilities, statements of how or where the OP searched, etc.) being made to solve the problem. Do you think I'm off base here?

@airhuff thats 12,220 users!

Wow!

We have more 1 rep users than >1 rep users.
Oops, I meant the the other way around
Nonetheless, they make up a 48.5% of all users.

5:58 AM
Yea, lots of one-timers I think.

We try to destroy users that clearly post spam/rude posts/comments, but that's not really many. I assume many of the 1 rep accounts are unregistered...

Oo
@airhuff regarding that 4-methyl thing, I guess your move is correct.
@Martin-マーチン I have an important question.
I saw the community ads page

Welcome to Chemistry.SE! Take the tour to get familiar with this site. Mathematical expressions and equations can be formatted using $\LaTeX$ syntax. Please see our guidelines on how to ask nomenclature questions. — Martin - マーチン ♦ 1 min ago

I made a post about how to draw reaction mechanisms. Do you think I should design a banner ad for it?

@Martin-マーチン , thx for putting up that comment.

6:06 AM
@airhuff I think we need to get away on that effort criterion as that is very subjective. It's better to put it in the context that the question and answer for such a problem has little use for further visitors. It simply is way too specific and does not deal with a conceptual issue here. For now I think the move is quite okay, but a more fundamental change towards long-term usability would be better (IMO).

@Martin-マーチン, yea, that makes good sense.

@PrittBalagopal you need six up-votes (score > 6) to get it into rotation, you can do it, but you should be aware that it might not reach that threshold. I'm not sure you'll reach that with the post. I guess most of the core users employ different ways to draw formulae.

Oh, but I often edit newbie posts who post picture drawings, and link them to my post. Hopefully, if that was helpful, they might upvote it.
And do I have to pay for posting the ad? Since, ads cost right?
@Martin-マーチン

nope. The community ads are determined by us and they don't cost anything

Wow, thats great to hear.
I'm always on the lookout, searching for picture posts, and fixing them up with ChemDoodle.

Q: Community Promotion Ads - 2017

Grace NoteIt is a bit late into this new year, being that we're already in the second month, but we are now cycling the Community Promotion Ads for 2017! What are Community Promotion Ads? Community Promotion Ads are community-vetted advertisements that will show up on the main site, in the right sidebar....

@Martin-マーチン What does this mean? The image that you create must be 300 x 250 pixels, or double that if high DPI.
What does high DPI mean?

dots per inch
it should rather be PPI = pixels per inch

So, what does it mean when I can use double the size.
Because 300*250 is way too small to design an ad.

Q: Is 4-chlorotoluene also an IUPAC name for 1-chloro-4-methylbenzene?

sakar singhalI think that toluene is a common name for 1-methylbenzene. And in IUPAC nomenclature, we must provide formal prefixes and suffixes along with correct numbering so the only correct option must be 1-chloro-4 methylbenzene.

7:23 AM
@PrittBalagopal Just look at the ones that are created in this post and you'll figure it out. But all adds will be displayed as 300*250 in any case. If you double the size it just means they are displayed sharper on some devices/monitors

Right now there are 3 questions on the front page about 4-chlorotoluene...

SBM

@orthocresol A very famous exam in India, called JEE Advanced, released its answer key today. It's an entrance examination to the most prestigious institute in India, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT). That was a question asked on the paper. Considering the fact that Indians make up one sixth of the worlds population, it would be surprising if those questions didn't come up.
By the way, I wrote the exam too, hopefully I would be selected for a seat at IIT.

these horrible questions... please ask future students crap as far away from the field they're going to study... why would you ask nomenclature in an entrance exam?
Let me guess the 1,2-dihydronaphtalene question was also on the test...

1 hour later…
10:18 AM
@Martin-マーチン Yup, that was also on it.

@PrittBalagopal do you have a link to the test questions and answers?

@Martin-マーチン But please do not mock the JEE Advanced, that exam is a prestige of India. Nomenclature is unfortunately a topic prescribed on the syllabus.
Yes, wait I'll search for the link.
The exam consists of two papers, Paper 1 and Paper 2. Their keys are here but no solutions for now. jeeadv.ac.in

I'm sorry, I don't mean to offend, but there are certain misconceptions, oversimplifications that are kept alive with such questions. It does not enhance critical thinking of complicated situations. Also I don't believe in learning according to rules and this exam usually tests exactly on that premise :(

@Martin-マーチン You're right. Those questions aren't really very valued. But they are only a minority of questions that JEE Advanced asks. Usually they take a year to frame this paper. Many of the questions are very beautiful in my opinion (especially in the physics section).
That paper is intended to 12th grade students who aspire to join the IIT.
That institute, IIT, is a dream for many Indian students. Some of them train for it from 6th or even 5th grade.

10:36 AM
Yeah I understand. Good luck for you.

11:00 AM
@Martin-マーチン Thank you.

11:32 AM
@Martin-マーチン I designed the ad for my page. Please tell if it needs more improvements.

that could work... post it and see

I feel it would be catchy to new users who want to format their posts.
Yes, but my post needs atleast 6 rep.
I'm waiting for that.

well, those ads are not really that popular...

12:10 PM
Drat, I ran out of votes.

Hey guys, I am trying to extract the hessian matrix from the fchk file to check its invertibility, however I am confused because my molecule has 22 atoms and is nonlinear, hence 3*22-6=60 vibrational degrees of freedom, thusthe hessian should have 60*60=3600 entries, but the total number of entries in that cartesian force constant is 2211, which is more than 1770 the number of entries in the upper triangle of the hessian matrix, or 1830, where the diagonal is involved

So what are those cartesian force constant exactly since they are slightly more than half to be the entries of the hessian

1:23 PM
@Secret (66 + 1)(66 / 2) = 2211

ah i see...

I'm pretty sure it does simply store them in cartesian coordinates including rotation and translation

I see, so that's why there is no -6

yes, but that's only my assumption based on the numbers

I checked out users and votes, and found that I casted 165 votes this month, while Nilay Ghosh comes second with 62 votes.
No one I was running out of votes so fast.
@Martin-マーチン I edited my ad post a bit, adding arrows and slight tweaking, is it better than the previous one?
I was thinking about greying the background, since that's how ChemDoodle does it.

2:12 PM
Voting usually dies down a bit after the initial phase, because you'll frequently see posts that you have already voted on...
the ad is entirely up to you... just post it and see what people think...

> The hessian is singular
Ok that's not very helpful...

okay... I'm out now... see all y'all
