Q: Photo in background in Bourne Supremacy magazine vs knife fight scene

JimIn the Bourne Supremacy there's a fight scene between Jason (Matt Damon) and Jarda (Marton Csokas). Jarda has a knife, and Jason has a magazine. Jason wins and blows up the house. Badass. On the wall in the background is a photograph of a concrete interior in Brutalist style (lots of raw conc...

@MovieReel off-topic or on-topic?

So are people ready to admit that Wonder Woman is almost a beat for beat rip-off of Captain America: The First Avenger yet?

@DrRDizzle I can agree that your opinions are crap, rest no

9:03 AM
puts on boxing gloves I'm ready

Captain America: The First Avenger was sooooooooooooooooooo boring that I don't remember much of it

A good-natured, shield-wielding superhero fights alongside a ragtag team of colourful personalities and specialities in a world war in order to take down an evil scientist and their commander before they can use a special weapon to win the war once and for all.
If we get into spoilers, the similarities go even deeper, especially during the finale.

A J
@DrRDizzle bringing popcorns

Diana = Steve Rogers, Steve Trevor = Peggy Carter, Ludendorff = Red Skull, Doctor Poison = Arnim Zola, Steve's mates = The Howling Commandos.
Which means that the best DCEU film to date (and let's be honest, the only one genuinely worth seeing) is the one that's heavily influenced by Captain America: The First Avenger.

@DrRDizzle like Civil War was full copy of BvS?

A J
9:12 AM
I didn't watch CA:TFA, so can't comment.

@AnkitSharma uh...how?
the only parallel I can think of is multiple heros team up and there's a big fight with explosions

@AnkitSharma There is world of difference between two films with vaguely similar premises coming out a few months apart, and a film cribbing liberally from one that came out 6 years ago.
Like, development for Captain America: Civil War and Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice was happening at pretty much exactly the same time - it's virtually impossible for one to have literally copied the other. The same can't be said when there is over half a decade between Captain America: The First Avenger and Wonder Woman.

@Ixrec Innocent people die ( superman terrorist fight/wanda blast), superhero fight each other, real villain is a mastermind who tricked them in fighting, Govt meeting get attacked/blasted, a sueprhero cameo who have nothing to do with the fight wonder woman/ spider-man

@DrRDizzle you say it like it's a bad thing
@AnkitSharma ah, fair enough, though I'm with Dizzle that that's a "vaguely similar premise"
WW and Cap 1 are waaaaay more similar

@Ixrec I read a detailed article which shown way many similarities, will search it later
@Ixrec Big diffrence was Cap was too lame film and WW was fun

9:18 AM
I liked Cap 1 but I'll happily agree that WW was better

@Ixrec It's not a "bad" thing because ultimately, Wonder Woman was pretty good. It's just something that no one seems to be talking about, and I don't really know why.

personally, most of the comparisons I've heard are to the older Christopher Reeve Superman movies

I prefer Captain America: The First Avenger to Wonder Woman. It's less messy.
And, at least to me, more emotionally engaging.

so it may simply be that people find that comparison more interesting even though plot-wise yeah it's far more similar to Cap

@DrRDizzle then you stay in caves as I have seen many articles talking about it and even someone said Wonder Woman did it better
@DrRDizzle marvel fanboy as I said many time before

9:22 AM
@AnkitSharma Wonder Woman definitely didn't do it better. I'm sure that when the hype dies down a little and people re-examine Wonder Woman with a more critical eye, they'll see that it's not as perfect as the current consensus seems to indicate.

@AnkitSharma while I agree WW is better, that's about the least convincing "argument" you could possibly counter him with =P

@AnkitSharma But the reason for why I prefer it has nothing to do with if it's Marvel or DC. It's just the basic concept of good story-telling.

(and Napoleon)

@Mithrandir grrrrrr
@DrRDizzle Cap made me sleep in middle and it was too boring, WW was fun
@DrRDizzle It did better , way better

@AnkitSharma The only thing I really don't like about Captain America: The First Avenger is that rather than showing us Cap and the Howling Commando's working together in one good action scene, they do a cheesy montage instead, which simply doesn't have the same effect.

9:25 AM
@Ixrec he is the one who said that Iron-man Trilogy is better then Dark Knight trilogy and X-men 3 is a good film, so I don't know a way for reasonable argument with him

That's one strength Wonder Woman does have over Captain America: The First Avenger - her "going over the top" sequence is brilliant and moving and inspiring and just so, so good, and Captain America: The First Avenger skipped that for a misguided montage.
But the finale of Captain America: The First Avenger and the way it sets up and later executes its emotional ending is far better than the messy CGI and odd storytelling choices of Wonder Woman.
Plus, Ares sucked.

@Mithrandir Hahahaha! WOW! Someone needs Anger Management therapy ;)

@DrRDizzle what the hell was emotional in it, lame hero got covered by snow, who cares
And he came back after 2 minute

@AnkitSharma The conversation between Steve and Peggy when he makes the decision to sacrifice himself in order to ground the plane is heart-breaking. The same moment in Wonder Woman isn't, and the way they set it up is weirdly artificial.

For the record, I very strongly disagree and loved pretty much everything about the WW finale.

9:31 AM
@DrRDizzle ohh that were cap shown how lame he can be, bleh
I even enjoyed Thor, Incredible hulk and Iron-man 2 more then cap 1

Captain America: The First Avenger is the third or maybe second best Phase 1 MCU film. Avengers Assemble > Captain America: The First Avenger/Iron Man > Thor > The Incredible Hulk > Iron Man 2, IMO.

I also strongly disagree and enjoyed most of Cap 1.
Thor wasn't bad, never saw Hulk or IM2

@DrRDizzle you and your weirdly wrong opinions

A J
Thor looks like a joker, not Batman one (he is great).

@Ixrec I like Thor too. You aren't missing much by not seeing The Incredible Hulk or Iron Man 2 though.

9:34 AM
yeah, I skipped them for a reason

@Ixrec Thor was way better then Cap 1 and Thor gave us best MCU villain so far, loki

But Loki didn't really get interesting until Avengers Assemble. He was good in Thor, but it was Joss Whedon who really got the most out of him.

@Mithrandir handled

@AnkitSharma great.

@Mithrandir he is banned and now using fresh IP to troll
@DrRDizzle But he is the only good villain MCU got from 10s of films

A J
9:38 AM
Yeah I liked Loki more than Thor.
2

@AJ everyone did

@AnkitSharma I don't agree. I think Obidiah Stane was good in Iron Man, Red Skull was good in Captain America: The First Avenger, and The Winter Soldier is great in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Even the rest are mostly serviceable - the only genuinely bad villain is Malekith in Thor: The Dark World, who has no personality and no motivation and really no interesting challenge to present to the heroes

@AJ Totally! Until he started dating Taylor Swift ;-(

@DrRDizzle are you high or trolling me ? Because Winter Soldier was the lamest character ever in MCU, he was the only issue with near perfect cap 2 film
@steelersquirrel he did MCU film and lost his mind

Hehehehe!

A J
9:43 AM
LOL

@AnkitSharma I don't know why you think that. He's imposing, dangerous, and mysterious (at least when we first meet him). The shot of him standing in the road with his weird grenade/mine launcher thing when we first meet him is so cool.

@DrRDizzle yeah mysteriously lame and boring

Ankit SharmaI heard that Taylor Swift sings songs about all her breakups and only skipped Taylor Lautner. Is this right? And which songs were about which of her ex-boyfriends?

@AJ it already did :P
But Tom Hiddleston deserve at-least two breakup songs
even Jake Gyllenhaal got 6

@AJ can we just drop that now

@AnkitSharma sure.
@AnkitSharma Ye sunne padhne se pehle m mar kyu nahi gya. Haay Rabba.

@AJ ufff drama queen

A J
Meh.

S S
@AnkitSharma Hahaha

The only similarities between Lex and Zemo is that they're both manipulating the heroes of the films. The same can be said about Loki in Avengers Assemble or The Joker in The Dark Knight or the bad guy in Skyfall or Hannibal Lecter in Silence of the Lambs or Khan in Star Trek Into Darkness. The idea of the bad guy "playing" the good guy really isn't that unique a thing.
There are no similarities between Doomsday and The Winter Soldier. That's a really strange comparison to try to make.
One of these comparisons is that both films had some characters that were under-used. What?
Comparing Wonder Woman's appearance to Black Panther's is unusual, because T'Challa's arc is core to the film's themes, whereas Wonder Woman simply shows up at some point.
Both films set up later films - no shit.
BOTH ARE BASED ON COMICS ARE YOU SERIOUS
That list is rubbish @AnkitSharma. Even I could come up with a better list.

@DrRDizzle then make one, I can't find the one I liked so posted this one :P

(Very) broadly speaking, both films are in some way about the nature of responsibility. Both films are about superheroes fighting other superheroes. Both films have characters with unresolved issues about their now-dead parents. Both films have villains who use their brains to achieve their goals rather than their brawn.
That's pretty much it.
And even then, the two films conclude on radically different notes and explore their shared themes in very different ways.

@DrRDizzle yeah because MCU avoided Captain american death story and DCEU did the mistake

10:14 AM
@AnkitSharma I'm not talking about character death. I'm talking about the way that Captain America: Civil War is used to break the Avengers apart, whereas Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice is used to bring the Justice League together.

@DrRDizzle hmmm
@DrRDizzle there is also parallel between Superman/Cap and Iron man/Batman
Billionaire + dead parent = Iron man/Batman
Boy scout + misfit scenario + super powers = superman/cap

But that's a similarity that has always existed between the two characters. It's not unique to the films.

A J
@AnkitSharma I don't see any super powers in Captain America except his shield.

Like, I wouldn't be saying that Wonder Woman and Captain America: The First Avenger were similar if it was just because both heroes are good and have shields. It's everything else about the film(s) in terms of structure, character, emotional beats etc that makes me make the comparison.

I remember a Facebook guy who said how he can become Batman and someone said I can kill your parents for you

@AJ then you need to watch Cap1, they made him super strong from supe soldier program
@DrRDizzle Wonder Woman shield was not a essential part of story and in Wonder Woman we have no lame equivalent of bucky
Bucky will always be a cheap robin for me

@AnkitSharma I know that. I'm not saying that the two are literally identical, I'm just saying that there are an extraordinary amount of similarities between the two stories and the characters in them.
@AnkitSharma Well, that's literally what he started off as in the comics.
I've just read a question about Nightcrawler and now I'm dying to see it again.

in particular, how he ended up both 1) wealthy beyond anyone's wildest dreams and 2) miserable and lonely by the time he died

I'm gonna give two opinions now, you tell me which is good and which is bad.
"Gender equality is a good thing", and "Gender equality is a bad thing".

May 4 at 8:24, by Dr R Dizzle
@AnkitSharma Sorry, but as per my earlier messages, all fictional characters are gay now
May 4 at 10:04, by Dr R Dizzle
As long as we're all willing to acknowledge that Poe Dameron is gay, that's all that matters.

On the boat, she says to Steve Trevor that "men are necessary for pro-creation, for not for pleasure". She lives on an island full of women. It doesn't take too much to connect the dots there.

May 3 at 14:49, by Dr R Dizzle
It turns out, all characters are gay now. I have decided.
May 3 at 14:32, by Dr R Dizzle
@MovieReel This is true too. Bugs Bunny is gay now.

12:49 PM
there's also a rather suggestive scene between her and Steve later on, so I was assuming bi

She was bi in some comics

@Ixrec True. She must be bi then.

which is cool

It would have been cool if the film itself had openly acknowledged it, but as it is, it's really nothing more than hinted at.

I always wanted to see a good bi character and if they make her bi, I will love her more
Harley is bi too , so that will make two bi in DCEU

12:51 PM
it wasn't super plot relevant so just hinting is fine

MCU failed to bring anything on rainbow flag

admittedly Harley isn't necessarily the best bisexual role model

> writer Greg Rucka clarified her sexual orientation as bisexual, giving her a backstory that includes positive relationships with women - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wonder_Woman
@Ixrec sexy bisexual can work even if she is psycho ;)
Anywya Harley is not bisexual in DCEU yet, we need poison Ivy to prove it

I'm still curious about those deleted SS scenes that supposedly showed more of her relationship with Jared Leto

@Ixrec Not really. You can't get credit for something you only vaguely hint towards anymore, we're past that now.

12:55 PM
we are?

@AnkitSharma That's not true. Jessica Jones stars a lesbian couple.
@Ixrec Well, I am. It used to be cool to leave room for the interpretation that a character might be non-straight - but everyone from Beauty and the Beast to Star Wars is doing that now. It's about time we saw proper, undeniable, canonical representation.
Which I'm really, really hoping we'll see in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

@DrRDizzle It's already proved for film TV/web universe doesn't matter and there lesbian character are not the lead
DC already doing good in LGBT spectrum in TV too
LoT have a bi lead character (Sara), Arrow team have gay character ( Mr Terrific) and supergirl's sister is gay and flash had a gay inspector but he is gone now

@AnkitSharma They might not be the leads, but they're an important part of the show and their sexuality isn't used to titillate nor to disgust. It's just part of who they are, which is exactly the kind of representation we need.

@Ixrec I will check it soon
@DrRDizzle agreed make captain america and winter soldier gay couple
@DrRDizzle but TV canon is not that cannon to films

@AnkitSharma True.

12:59 PM
I suppose Fanatic Beats can do it better
WB seems to be more open to risks now and JKR seems to have this intention from start

In a lot of ways, the film side of the MCU is disappointingly white, male and hetero-normative. It's definitely something it needs to do better.
Hopefully, Black Panther will mark the start of a change into a more representative franchise.

DCEU have variety for sure
@DrRDizzle MCU have two character of colour as tiny supportive avengers
But there is no main lead from LGBT spectrum, even in future films
MCU playing it super safe

still no Black Widow movie, right?

@AnkitSharma They're hardly tiny characters. War Machine has been in 5 films (important part of 4), Falcon 3 (important part of 2).
@Ixrec Depressingly, you're correct.
A Bond-esque Black Widow movie would make so much money, on potentially a rather modest budget. No idea why they haven't pulled the trigger on that one yet.

@Ixrec because after making 10s of film they can't make a single good superheroine lead film

1:05 PM
I think it's fair to say a lot of people who've seen MCU movies would not be able to name War Machine or Falcon.
I doubt my parents could

@DrRDizzle falcon was good in winter soldier only, war machine is trash

@Ixrec Would they be able to name Hawkeye?

@Ixrec agreed, they are filler characters and not even Avengers

@AnkitSharma Actually, they are both Avengers in Captain America: Civil War.

@DrRDizzle dunno, I should quiz them next time they're on Skype

1:06 PM
They become avenger in end credit and next film broke the whole avenegrs team

fun fact: My parents liked Age of Ultron better than Civil War. Apparently the latter was too hard to follow.

@DrRDizzle In Civil war it's questionable to call them avengers, it was A team B team fight

True, but that film also has a really interesting character arc/introduction for T'Challa. It's a step in the right direction, even if it is coming far too late.

@Ixrec My inner instinct say Infinity war will be a big mess

let's hope not

1:08 PM
finger crossed but I have less hopes

I have my concerns about Avengers: Infinity War too. It's one of the most ambitious pieces of blockbuster film-making that we've ever seen, and I'm not convinced that the Russo Bros will be able to handle it.

Handling this many charters is tough and they failed to do it in Age of ultron by ruining the Quicksilver and Wanda

@AnkitSharma That wasn't the Russo Bros, that was Whedon. And he didn't ruin either of those characters.

Wanda's fine

@DrRDizzle he doesn't ruined them, he killed them and send then to there grave or Boredom
@Ixrec she got better in Civil war

1:11 PM
@AnkitSharma He gave them a smart, thematically appropriate origin, an interesting arc over the course of the movie and then an emotionally satisfying ending. Nothing wrong with that.

I am happy Quicksilver is dead, I can't hear that lame accent with that horrible acting again

A J
I said it already and will say it again. Movies can also be enjoyed without speculating sexuality of their characters.

@AJ I said already and will say it again. All characters are gay now.

Q: How Weyland Shaw Engineer hate them?

jitbitIn the scene where David, Weyland Shaw etc. wake the Engineer from stasis, Shaw shouts "ask him, why do they hate us? What did we do??!!" How does she know, the Engineers hate humans? It's not revealed at this point. I re-watched the movie a few times, and there's no mention of Engineers wa...

Q: What is the story behind the Brahmasthra? Was it actually ever fired?

A_runningMindIn different Puranas there are mentions of the Brahmasthra which is one of the powerful weapons capable of destroying the whole world. I have seen usually in Purana TV serials, these astras (arrows) are portrayed with some sparks, glitters and smoke - nothing more nothing less. Actually, what i...

In hindusim we do have philosopher stone equivalent called Cintamani
Cintāmaṇi (Sanskrit; Devanagari: चिन्तामणि) also spelled as Chintamani (or the Chintamani Stone) is a wish-fulfilling jewel within both Hindu and Buddhist traditions, said by some to be the equivalent of the philosopher's stone in Western alchemy. It is one of several Mani Jewel images found in Buddhist scripture. In Buddhism it is held by the Bodhisattvas (divine beings with great compassion, wisdom and power) Avalokiteshvara and Ksitigarbha. It is also seen carried upon the back of the Lung Ta (wind horse) which is depicted on Tibetan prayer flags. By reciting the Dharani (small hymn) of Cintamani...

Q: Can a site "degraduate"?

caird coinheringaahingI know that sites have two main stages once they leave Area 51: beta and graduated. In order for a site to graduate from beta, it must meet a few requirements such as A certain number of questions per day (10 I think) A certain number of users above a specific reputation level However, I was...

@Pandya hello stranger
@Pandya I think answer is no

Sometimes I wonder if M&TV would prosper if we banned ID questions. they do make up a substantial proportion of the traffic.

bleh, kill ID, everything will be better

Nooo

@Mithrandir you can ask ID on lit and SFF if it become off topic here

Not if it's a non-SFF movie

2:20 PM
@AnkitSharma I just found some exampled movies & tv

@Mithrandir say it's novel and ask on Lit

@AnkitSharma Yes, I know.

...and then get my diamond removed by a horde of angry users. No thanks.

@Pandya ohhh I see

Movies.SE seems to have been a lot better for ID questions recently.

2:21 PM
@Paulie_D didn't you guys have this debate a while back on meta?

@Ixrec but did it solved the issue? No

indeed

Most of the supporters are of no avail after the decision was made in there favour
And no one able to answer my own ID :P

Q: Animated film/show with man's journey of reverse civilization to an extent that he goes naked and hunts for food

Ankit SharmaI remember watching an animated film or an episode from an animated TV show ( maybe anthology) on Indian channel Doordarshan in mid 90s but the movie or show appears to be little older as foreign animation takes time to come to India back then. So my bets are 80s or early 90s. Plot: Main chara...

Q: Maintaining, improving and cleaning up identification questions

Napoleon WilsonRecently the community has decided to still try it further with identification questions on the site. So they remain on-topic for now and we'll see how that pans out in the future. So what to make of this now? However, the problems they pose for the site, as adressed in that linked discussion a...

@AnkitSharma Take a nice question badge.....

@Ixrec No discussion about banning them altogether, although I think that might be useful discussion (perhaps once a year)...however, they drive (I understand) a lot of traffic to M&TV (about 1/3 of questions are ID) so it's "swings & roundabouts". On one hand they're usually "one and done" users/questions with no long-lasting benefits to the site...but we can't ignore extra eyeballs on the site.

@Paulie_D there was definitely a discussion of banning them altogether

Q: Shall we ban identification questions?

Napoleon Wilson The consensus for now seems to be to try it further with identification questions on the site and see how it will pan out in the future. We will shortly post more meta discussions about how to deal with this decision and how to proceed further. As many of you know, one way or the other this ...

my previous link was the follow up to ^this

@Paulie_D then you missed it
@Ixrec It looks like there is change in votes

what do you mean?
the "don't ban them" answer is still way higher

@Ixrec Oh, you said a while back...that's a year ago. I thought you meant more recently. I've onlt been hear a year.

2:28 PM
yeah I forgot how long it's been

@Ixrec I mean votes increased in keep the shit option

could be worth a revisit, though I haven't been paying any attention to whether it's gotten better or worse

@AJ but it's a awesome ID :P

all I know for sure is the issue of ID questions has never stopped being contentious

Q: How was the J.A.R.V.I.S. scene filmed in iron man movies?

Akshat BishtI'm not asking about how they created the J.A.R.V.I.S. voice or the CGI, I'm trying to know how they created the digital effects in all the J.A.R.V.I.S. and computer scenes.

2:31 PM
@MovieReel after my edit it might get into charcoal room

@MovieReel I feel like I've seen this question here before...
I'm probably thinking of movies.stackexchange.com/questions/23803/…, though now I'm not sure if "JARVIS scenes" refers to this or something else

@Ixrec I agree that we should revisit the subject every so often but whether things have got better or worse is likley to be contentious on it's own. I feel, personally, that we could so without them but we'd still probably have the problem of closing them fast enough. Hmmm...perhaps it's time to ask a new meta question.
@AnkitSharma @NapoleonWilson

it's probably at least worth getting a consensus from the current set of core power users
movies.meta.stackexchange.com/questions/636/… wow these ID debates go back all the way

For the record, I'd support any movement that sought to ban ID questions. I don't think they're useful for the site.

Unfortunately, the "core users" are a very small sample of the availabe "electorate". One could argue that we're the ones dealing with this crap but I'm not sure we're representative of the whole user base. We have c.30k + users and the last question had 81 UV and 18DV...a total of 100 (rounding) votes.
I do think Ankit made some good points in his answer though.

2:39 PM
yeah, but you're gonna be the ones paying attention to and participating in a meta discussion, and probably the ones doing most of the actual moderation/cleanup/curation of id questions

I think ID is useful, as there have been some worthy ID questions, but the standard to which ID questions are held should never waver.

I'm less convinced of the worhiness of ID question but I can't deny that when they are good, they are really good. It's the signal-to-noise ratio that bugs me more than anything else.

@AJ I have been watching this all day on every troll page.

Hey @DrRDizzle, I think you said the ending to Wonder Woman was bad? I'm inclined to agree with you. Easily the weakest part of the movie.

Q: How big of a deal is the state's attorney's office of cook county?

TomIn the TV series The Good Wife Peter and Alicia Florrick are running for state's attorney at some point. A lot of effort goes into both of these campaigns: Money: I assume paying for campaign handlers like Eli Gold or Johnathan Elfman costs tens of thousands dollars over several months. the wo...
