> Remember that beryllium ions in solution exist as the hydrated ion, [Be(H2O)4]2+. The beryllium has such a strongly polarising effect on the water molecules that hydrogen ions are very easily removed from them.
I don't understand this last sentence
Beryllium is basic, not acidic.
If hydrogen ions were removed, it would have created an acidic environment

@CowperKettle Speaking of Cossacks...
3:)
08:21
@paracetamol yes, history is ugly
Cossacks have perpetrated quite a lot of ugly gruesome things
They killed Jews right and left in the 17th century Ukraine
As any warrior caste, they were sometimes on the wrong side
However, the song about Berestechko is beautiful

@CowperKettle Yep, history is very ugly >_<
@CowperKettle Eh?
@CowperKettle That doesn't sound so bad ;D (I mean, they weren't the only ones :P)
@CowperKettle True, that.
Will CuO react with Cl2?
10:24
@CowperKettle I ran a cursory Google search... there's no reference to it actually happening ._.
11:07
> KHCO3 + H2SO4
Do we get K2SO4 or KHSO4?
On what it depends?
11:18
Blank expression
Oh @Cowper! We've got @Ivan in the room! \o/
11:43
Why would not NO2 react with CaO?
I read that with water it might, but why not without?
hmmm
Good afternoon, Ivan
(back to reading chemistry)
Hello. I would expect them to react even without water.
@Cowper ^
12:16
@IvanNeretin Thank you!
I have this problem and I've no idea which set to pick for NO2
Probably No. 3
> 2CaO + 4NO2 = Ca(NO3)2 + Ca(NO2)2.
Found this online
Looks like a disproportionation reaction
I wonder why it happens at all
And how
What's the criteria for picking a set? Reacts with everything? Reacts with nothing?
Yes, reacts with each of the chemicals
It's a training set of tasks for the annual Chem Exam in Russia
Яндекс ЕГЭ по химии, in other words
> $2NO_2 + 2KOH → KNO_3 + KNO_2 + H_2O$
It's interesting. Seems like NO2 always wants to disproportionate itself
Got it. So what are your picks for А, Б...?
(Yes, NO2 is like that.)
My picks are 1, 5, 3, 1
(I'll go and read some more chem)
могут повторяться, they say. so using 1 twice is OK.
Then your picks are fine.

@IvanNeretin Welcome to the chat room!
@MelanieShebel @MelanieShebel What's wrong with the titles?

Let me say hi to Mr. @CowperKettle
Inspired by you
Let's say hi to @CowperKettle
He is always so very gentle
Usually solving lots of questions
Sometimes he gives good song suggestions

Q: Salt Bridge in Galvanic cell

SagarSorry if this questions are already asked . I have a couple of questions Why a salt bridge is used in a galvanic cell? And why a circuit does not completes if we don't add a salt bridge in a galvanic cell? Zinc and coppers are conductors then why we use salt bridge to complete the circuit?Why is...

I would be glad for an exhaustive answer
I also have no idea why it is there

Structure of $CH_3^+$ is not same as structure of ammonia because of different hybridization?
15:49
What can I use to obtain methanol from carbon monoxide?
There's five options, an neither seems to fit
And if I ask this on main site, downvotes again..
ooops
Looks like $H_2$ does it
> The synthesis of methanol from carbon monoxide and hydrogen gas is described by the following chemical equation: CO(g)+2H2(g)⇌CH3OH(g) The equilibrium constant for this reaction at 25 ∘C is Kc=2.3×104.
16:16
I found it in some obscure book
Is this the right mechanism?
So we first get methanal (formaldehyde)
and then, all of a sudden ... CH3OH
but how?
Does H2 split in two by itself?
D'oh

Q: Looking for the accepted name of a lactone with two keto groups

user44764Looking for the term applied to a lactone ring species with two keto groups attached to the ring. A lactodione? dilactone?

Yeah, I saw that.
16:33
It's definitely not the best-written question, though
Does that mean two C=O groups in addition to the C=O group of the lactone?
Probably just two C=O groups total
But three C=O's would be a natural extension of the question, and answer.
(probably?)
Maybe OP just discovered succinic anhydride?
Mm, could be
A structure would've been a great thing to include.
Hello everyone
16:38
Hiya
@BerryHolmes \o
Well, I'm a high school student and I'm trying to understand the mechanism of cyclotrimerization, but the Wikipedia article is too high a level for me to comprehend. Is asking for a simple explaination for the same on topic here?
@BerryHolmes Seems a reasonable question to me
@hBy2Py thank you so much, I'll formulate a question and post it soon
I don't see anything already on the site that seems related; this search and this search definitely don't yield anything relevant.
16:46
True, they're interesting reads nevertheless.

Hey guys, I am planning to optimise a molecule which has triphenylphosphine as a ligand. This means I will need to do a conformation analysis. However, given that the conformers from rotating each of the phenyl may not be independent (thus I cannot just run 3 PES scans rotating one phenyl at a time and then the 3D PES will be just the product of the 3 1D PES), any good advice on how to do this conformation analysis more efficiently?
17:30
@Ortho can you check if this user is a sock of this one?
17:54
@M.A.R. It is the same user; however, I do not think there is foul play.
wait
@orthocresol there is
when I wrote that, I hadn't seen the question.
You're welcome
I think just merging the accounts would do the trick
only CMs can merge
i guess we will monitor it and see how things go
thanks haha
:o sock?

Note: This page is not a policy or guideline. The policy page for this topic is located at Wikipedia:Sockpuppetry. A sockpuppet is an online identity used for purposes of deception. The term, a reference to the manipulation of a simple hand puppet made from a sock, originally referred to a false identity assumed by a member of an Internet community who spoke to, or about, themselves while pretending to be another person. The term now includes other misleading uses of online identities, such as those created to praise, defend or support a person or organization, to manipulate public opinion, or...

Q: How should sockpuppets be handled on Stack Exchange?

Won'tSo a high-reputation, highly-active user has already been dinged once for a sockpuppet, and I just dinged him again. He probably has another sockpuppet as well. What are the guidelines for handling users who game the system in this fashion? Specifically, How can I be sure I'm looking at a soc...

Fun fact: I found that question by googling "nog shine".
@M.A.R. regarding this, there is also something I saw on Biology
generally I think that lack of research is a poor criterion for closure
I'm just not sure how to go about changing it. as you said the other day, there is also the issue of trying to stop low-Q answers. There's also a second benefit of closure, they get deleted quickly.
@orthocresol Now I know! Thanks. Nog shine haha
18:47
@MelanieShebel they're not that bad
I was expecting "chem doubt halp"
Or maybe you've edited the ones that needed editing
