00:00 - 17:0017:00 - 00:00

5:00 PM
Later it got more fancy and we used MP3 players
Good times!
This shitty 128 MB key is from that time
The keys in the top picture are 64 MB

gg.
I once knew of a company, who had racks of cheap servers, with 128 usb gsm modems hanging off the back
litterally, hanging
they migrated them over to a company I worked at shortly before I worked there - as part of that we were given 3 huge boxes of usb extension leads... I still have many of those :D

:D
I'm currently cleaning out parts of the house I haven't touched since I moved in. I still have a couple of ancient DVD (or maybe even CD) spindles to get to

how many years?

I still remember 2 GB flash drives costing well over $100.

I dunno. I'm assuming they are from 2008-2010
I just threw out a bunch of old VHS tapes

5:04 PM
I meant how long have you been moved in XD

For the same amount of money, you can easily get a 256 GB-class portable SSD.

Having kids changes things somewhat. I actually touched and sorted everything in this house within about 3 months
at the old house (were there for 4+ years) I found stuff in the loft I wasn't aware of

@djsmiley2k Oh, 3 years i think. But I touched the DVDs back then just to get them out of the box. Their contents have not been seen in longer

(prices range from $80 for an entry-level ADATA model to $120 for a Samsung Portable SSD T3)

I think there is one box here still, that's not been moved since moving in
which is a year on the 29th feb

5:07 PM
I still have stacks of DVDs containing many of my older photos. I kinda think Blu-ray Disc is a better medium for this...
Alas, I don't have a BD-R drive...
@djsmiley2k lol
802.11ac FTW!

Wish I had ac
b/g still here

Wow. Not even n?

nope
fancy buying me a nice AP? :D

:P
It's absolutely amazing how far we've come.

5:49 PM
I don't even know anymore if the noise from the DVD drive should be scaring me or if that is what it was always like
I can download faster from the internet than I can copy files off a DVD :\
First I don't use the shitty DVD drive for years and now I wish I had 6 so I could check more discs at a time :P

@OliverSalzburg Grrrr
Damn this rubbish copper cable based internet

It just feels weird thinking about it. I mean, the data is right there :D

Any of you rip film dvd's for displaying on computer etc?
I want to rip all my daughters for displaying on plex...

Q: Move data from discs to hard drive with robotic changer device?

SamHow can I? What can I buy? Is it made? A robotic disc-changer that allow a stack of already burnt discs to be read, taking simple PC data from the discs and off'ing it to the hard drive. Would like to copy discs, 25 at a time, to a local hard drive. Already have a Primera Bravo but no way to...

6:06 PM
@djsmiley2k Yeah, back in the day

Although I usually just went straight for imaging the whole thing, then mounting it when I needed it

yeah not gonna do that
not mounting 500 dvd's xD

So once I start ripping (this has been in planning for 2 years and i keep running away from the idea)

6:08 PM
That's a tool I generally liked to use for DVD "backup" back then

I just need a 'movie' file out
on linux

Yeah, it does that IIRC

I hear handbrake but actualy gfinding a nice guide for it is :/

For Linux, I think it was Handbrake

Since when is "lol" offensive?
3

6:09 PM
Handbrake is pretty fine, as long as you never have to deal with the community or the devs :P
They are major dicks and everyone who isn't up to their level of expertise is someone who needs to be talked down to and made fun of
Well, back then anyway :P

@DavidPostill Content at link target makes excessive use of profanity.
It's /r/rant, though. I don't think this warranted a flag, but it should have a language warning on it.
Speaking of Reddit... just posted this:

today's my 5th anniversary here \o/

6:25 PM
though the blue suggests a link
@DavidPostill Yep, it's a link and it points to a very ranty sweary page titled "FOR FUCKS SAKES I JUST CUT MY FUCKING FINGER WITH MY HAIR"

@Mokubai Ah. I missed that :/

@bwDraco aye, just read that
But I could actually look back at the (now dismissed) flag to see what was wrong with it.

@Mokubai My fault. I dismissed it :/

@bwDraco And yes, it should have had a content warning rather than just "lol"
@DavidPostill the room regulars were doing the same, so they obviously weren't that offended.

6:33 PM
I took no action on the flag.

@nc4pk Congrats :D

@nc4pk Happy cakeday!

6:50 PM
freedom hosting 2 got hacked..is it a good thing or a bad thing?

@defalt If this story is anything to go by, a good thing:
> Anonymous targeted the popular Tor hosting provider because it was providing its services to a large number of websites sharing child pornography image.

7:17 PM
@defalt then again...
> Lewis has been analyzing the data, too, and she's found a few things that will be highly unsettling to some Dark Web users. The database contains numerous plain text emails, usernames, and hashed passwords from forum sites hosted by Freedom Hosting II. That's bad news for anyone who joined one of those forums using genuine personal details

@Boris_yo yes the length and quality (copper) of a USB charging cable can change the total power that gets to any (different) phones. very minor voltage drops from the resistance of a cheap wire can reduce your charge rate. Beyond that the drop in voltage and/or how it connects for the notification that it is on a "fast Charge" source, can have a device doing slow charge , even if the power supply or computer port is capable of it.
Can a wire alone be the problem with your phone or device not charging quickly? For Sure. But charging to 50% in an hour , or 80% in 2hrs, would still be a fast charge rate, and is nothing to complain about.

7:38 PM
Hmm. A tracking number has appeared for my laptop order but the tracking details are still blank

@noitsbecky For me that happens when I label the package online and haven't dropped it off at the post office yet

@OliverSalzburg My experience with ServerFault in a nutshell.

My DVD drive is like "OMG, this is the best day of my life! I am so useful right now"
Open, close, read, open, close, read, weeeeeeee

9:29 PM
Woah, just found the source of my actual first work project from 2004 along with a huge collection of my earliest source codes, which I thought had been lost
Damn, a lot of it doesn't run. Apparently Windows 10 comes without the Visual Basic 5 runtime
Top comment under this article: blog.danbrust.net/2015/09/14/…

the horror

10:00 PM
Turns out you can just download the runtime and you're good to go

@OliverSalzburg hmm. Well they claim it was despatched 9am on the 3rd but it's been blank till now.

10:18 PM
Well, that's a bit of a stretch
Maybe labeled in the morning and then it was kind of an "I'll do this next week" kind of deal
First spindle complete \o/
That was worth it
Damn, there are 6 more O__O

morning

Howdie

Oh, someone's copying all their old recordable media to HDDs?
I keep meaning to do that but there's multiple dozen spindles of DVDs

@ThatBrazilianGuy Yes. Although it's mostly a sighting

10:25 PM
A lot of it is garbage

I was toying with that

And some of that garbage was treasure 10 years ago. Makes you think

And I need new HDDs. My only one has got only 15 GB left.
But shit's expensive down here.

Well, I used to burn DVDs because I didn't have storage space, now storage space is cheap and optical media breaks, so I'm copying it back. And storage is so cheap now, that I'm even copying it "into the cloud"
I really wonder what the next iteration will be
I download it all again to some floppy magnetic media?

There will always be weak links. In the past it was floppies, then faulty HDDs, then broken DVDs, now it's hackers and cloud companies closing doors.

10:30 PM
The last part is what scares me the most

If I had the money, I'd have a mirrored RAID server with lots of HDDs. At home.

lol
mostly ditto

I really mean it.

but I'd build a ZFS box

Yeah, actual, real, physical ownership is worth something

10:35 PM
@OliverSalzburg Possibly. I'm hoping it's just a shitty courier that only works Mon-Fri and doesn't do weekends.

What are databases?

Bob
10:56 PM
@OliverSalzburg 7 didn't come with a VB6 runtime iirc

11:15 PM
Scandalous!
Really neat. I found some obscure VCDs of weird stuff I didn't even really care about. No idea why I have them. But I can't find anything online on them. So I like to think that I'm uncovering lost digital goods

> VCDs of weird stuff

> Netgear this week announced the Nighthawk M1 mobile router, which is the industry’s first 4G LTE device with download speed up to 1 Gbps. The Nighthawk M1 is powered by Qualcomm’s X16 LTE modem with 4x4 MIMO announced a year ago and will be available only on Telstra’s 4GX LTE network in Australia. As soon as similar networks are launched in different parts of the world, the same router or its derivatives may hit the market elsewhere as well.
Australia has.... 4G... X?!

@Burgi It's going onto Youtube. I can link you later if you want ;D
Recordings of speedcore events if I'm not mistaken

purely for research purposes

One has already finished processing
I hope I'm not messing with anyones copyright :P

Bob
11:32 PM
@noitsbecky uhh, yea, afaik that's just what Telstra calls its LTE-A network

@Bob Among the major carriers here in the US, T-Mobile's network is the most technologically advanced, with Cat.12/13 LTE-A. Verizon and Sprint also have LTE-A, but at Cat.6.

I have a tab marked "Later" on my bookmarks bar (synced via xmarks to all of my devices) that I occasionally add new stuff to, but I often close my browser and lose all my tab progress - but I don't care
I have 4 tabs open right now, including a defensive about:blank tab for walk-ins

lol

11:55 PM

@allquixotic CATS LIVES MATTER
all nine of them!
