@Catija I can't think of any sane way to salvage the "best way to cook this pork" question, can you?
(besides taking out the original question and leaving only the chili oil substitution question, which doesn't exactly seem sane)

@Jefromi I was thinking about it. I'm not sure there is. I guess if there was a specific thing she wanted to make... "How can I use this cubed pork to make ____"?

Yeah, "how do I use it in this recipe?" is fine, and the substitution is fine...
shrug I guess I'll give that a shot
surprisingly it seems to have worked?

6:13 AM
@Jefromi google suggests its pretty easy to make.

@JourneymanGeek the chili oil? yeah, ought to be (if you can find the right kind of peppers)

or chilli powder it seems.

I wasn't worrying so much about the answer to the question, but rather dealing with the whole bit where the original question was blatantly off-topic and so on.
Korean chili stuff always seems to have a very specific flavor to me, though.
Seems like the non-Korean substitutes I could find would be good but not the same.

Q: What kind of peppers are used in Gochugaru (고추가루)?

에이바I'm trying to make kimchi, but I don't have any chili powder (gochugaru -고추가루). Does anyone know what type of chili pepper(s) this is made from? I'm trying to find it at a normal western grocery store (Wal-Mart, Kroger, Remke...) I figured if I knew what type of peppers it was made from I could ...

it's all very confusing :(

ah!
sorry about that

IMDb Message Boards Announcement

IMDb is the world's most popular and authoritative source for movie, TV and celebrity content. IMDb message boards are no more.
I have probably spent years of my life there.

@Jolenealaska Ouch. I wonder how low the usage had dropped with the social media replacements.

9:22 PM
@Jefromi I suspect that the nature of the participation (of late mostly trolling) is at least as big a part of the decision as raw numbers. Of course, that's an unstoppable trend. The quality content had become difficult to find. That's what led me here.

blah, yeah. Not that it's that much better on twitter.
I imagine the externally invisible cost of maintaining it all is pretty high too, though.

10:05 PM
@Jolenealaska maybe interesting for you:

10:27 PM
Hey any of you guys got any interesting salmon (fresh and not smoked) stir-fry (rice or noodles) recipes? I got this salmon in the fridge and I can't decide what to make for lunch.

10:37 PM
Fillet?

Morning
@Jolenealaska and moderating public sites is hard
and when you don't get gets filled with crap

@Jolenealaska Yeah.
I'm kinda thinking maybe just throw in some teriyaki sauce and ginger or something.
@Jolenealaska Also, translation: "Good work, people. This is why we can't have nice things", heh. I can't believe they let it go this long before putting it out of its misery.

@JasonC internet comments are one of those things primarily good for raising blood pressures ;p
and its probably a mix of early internet BUT PEOPLE NEED TO TALK vs "We have no idea how to tame this herd of angry cats"

Heh

(for example - youtube)

pretty much any subset of teriyaki/soy, sesame, orange, ginger, green onions is good

Something about YouTube makes it timeless though. The YouTube comments are ridiculous but there's something magically entertaining about them. It's like the YouTube uniquely owns its own silliness.

also chipotle maple soy

11:01 PM
What Jef said. Sesame seeds are killer with salmon.

also miso

Go hot - Leave the center rare if you can.

@Jefromi Sweet. Yeah, I'm going with teriyaki, ginger, sesame oil, scallions, and maybe a little garlic. And sesame seeds, yeah.

But you want a sear if you can
Sounds good

Oh, miso. Or.. This chipotle maple soy combo sounds fascinating. Damn. Just when I thought I had made a decision.
Well I'm gonna run to the grocery store. We'll see where fate takes me. Also thanks!!

@Jefromi From the link you just posted - today's dinner! I was actually planning on mushroom (and asparagus, but same dif) risotto made the classic way.
Same ingredients, just a different method.
So, might as well! This is why I got the extra inner pot. I made a big batch of soup that is sitting in the refrigerator, in the other inner pot.
Not five minutes ago I was contemplating returning the spare inner pot, as I've had it for a month and still haven't opened it.
If it really does make good risotto, that and tender pork makes the whole device worthwhile.
I haven't done dried beans yet.
or yogurt.
That reminds me of a question I want to ask on main.

pressure cooker risotto!
but how will you stir constantly for hours over a hot stove if it's in a pressure cooker??

Pressure cookers are magic.

11:28 PM
The day after receiving this one, I came across a scathing review by America's Test Kitchen (my go-to for expert advice)

does it sound like their concerns would be concerns for you, or like they're not thinking about it the same way everyone else would?

I don't think the problems are in the device, the problems are in the documentation.
@Jefromi They make good points for the average user.
Of course, I am not an average user of a shiny new kitchen gadget.
So, my jury is still out.
It rocked for 40 minute St Louis ribs.
