9:01 AM
yes
@Burgi why would you be fired?

yesterdays shenanigans with our customers website and the rival agency that hosts it
they complained that i over stepped my bounds by calling them out on it

Is there a SATA to USB adapter with power ? (no external power)
USB2.0/3.0 doesn't matter
A huge power brick seems to be over kill

@HackToHell I suspect you'll need a brick for 3.5 inch drives
@Burgi but your duty is to your company and by extention your company.

Oh is the power requirement that sigh. Wait this might be a pro. I can also get the smps to drive a 12v fan
Do SMPS draw a lot of power at idle ?
I'm building a NAS \m/

@JourneymanGeek yeah i think that might be the counter-argument too
in my mind i haven't done anything wrong
and i would do it again
because it was/is the right thing to do

9:18 AM
Oo er - plagiarised (well he plagiarised himself) spam. OP left out the line "I am a beginner marketer to promote the project (proofy.io)" — DavidPostill 5 mins ago
^^^ spam flags and/or user mod nuke please

If you get fired for pointing out your rival company is fucking over your customer, ..
@Burgi is anyone in your company saying this?
cause from what you're saying you've basically saved your company a ton of money remediating what your old boss did
and this sounds like a chance to get that account

you'd think so

9:36 AM
Hello!

company politics confuses me. ;p
But yeah, is anyone important in your company bitching about this?

the MD

ah
That does sound important ._.
Does he have a tendancy to bitch people out in situations like this?
Is he friends with the rival's management?
(You don't actually need to answer those ;p)
but its worth trying to understand his motivations

she
i don't know

ah
It might be something as simple as "He didn't ask me first"
But I'm just guessing here

9:48 AM
they've stolen work from us though
welp

That's a good thing

its been fun learning to be a lead dev

I suppose, in line with my theory of "everything can be explained as dog training or cookies" - she could be trying to establish dominance or actually be mad at you.

10:07 AM
I got caught with my girlfriend today :(

@Rahul2001 Kissing?

@DavidPostill Just talking, but we were alone

if you are going to get caught you should have at least been kissing....

@Burgi lol, then we would've gotten suspended for a week, currently stuff is still okay
We're supposed to give in apology letters tomorrow, and hope for the best

10:22 AM
@Rahul2001 Wat! Your school makes you apologise for talking? Do you have to take a vow of silence of something?

@DavidPostill We weren't caught kissing, but the headmistress says that we shouldn't have been alone together, and that she can't trust me when I say that we didn't kiss (which we didn't today, actually)...

10:38 AM
._.

10:54 AM
As a matter of fact, we'd taken a break from our relationship because of several problems going on at both of our homes, and were discussing stuff, but whatever... The counselor, who knows both of us very well, saved us.

the only solution here is to run away and join the circus

lmao

11:16 AM
@JourneymanGeek cookie but a plain one

@Burgi the funny thing is I don't remember the whole cookie thing
But in a moment of inspiration I once made the best cookie analogy ever

and what was it?
remind me tonight to explain the situation btw

funny thing is I don't remember where or what I said that about.
Its fine though
someday I will make another glorious cookie analogy

12:01 PM
this is astonishing: bbc.in/2kV3FC8

"bbc.in"
Whut?

Indian TLD?
Why?

That's just odd. Since BBC is quite british
and you lot kicked the british out of the empire and became a republic 50 years a bloody long time ago ;p

@JourneymanGeek s/50/70/

its a short domain

12:10 PM
ah ;p

the song i mean: I Come From Ireland by RAPHAEL DOYLE

Q: What is a Patty Code?

WinnyIn my digital logic lecture today, my professor introduced a symbol code called Patty Code. I copied this table off the whiteboard: | Symbol | Binary | Odd Patty | Even Patty | |--------+--------+-----------+------------| | a | 00 | 100 | 000 | | b ...

erf. Missed a bounty cause the OP missed it

Bounty hunting isn't my main goal. I've mostly retired from answering questions or even actively doing any sort of community moderation. Times have changed.

@bwDraco answered it cause it was fun. I did get the tick and an upvote. Still funny to whine about though.
errrrr
dude. Once again, this isn't about you
If is it, I'll let ya know.

12:21 PM
I seriously need to spend more time socializing outside.
headdesk

@bwDraco LEAVE THE FRACKING HOUSE!!!!
phone, wallet, keys
just go and sit in a coffee shop

@Burgi squeeky toy, blankie, snax....

Well, I am going out today, and this will be the first time I am going to the local grocery store on my own to buy stuff on Mother's request. I actively volunteered this one.
It's about time.
Mom knows it's time to move forward. Father, on the other hand...
The less said about Father's objections, the better.

@JourneymanGeek true, i didn't consider the needs of non-bipedals

;p
(actually, its an army towel, rather than a blankie)

12:25 PM
@bwDraco go sit in a coffee shop and smile at the cute girls/boys/other dragons (delete as applicable)

lol
:P

@bwDraco Seriously, I feel just walking in the market and by the road helps me a lot... If fact, I'm going to do just that right now. Go out, and look around, and think about random stuff...

@Rahul2001 watch out for traffic

@JourneymanGeek walking by the road, not on it :P

@Rahul2001 its india....

12:29 PM
@Rahul2001 India tho!

New York's streets can get very busy, but they're generally quite safe.

Bob
@HackToHell sure, for 2.5". I'm using two of them for SSDs right now.
soo, silicone tape is awesome :)
leaking shower head? tape it up, no prob

Well, here's the issue. I feel really lonely inside. I am by no means depressed, but between the situation with Father and my growing pains, I'm a lot less mature than I should be and have had far fewer friends than I should have for a 24-year-old young adult.

@Bob Ah do you recommend a brand
I have a desktop HDD sitting useless right now and I am thinking of making a NAS

Bob
@HackToHell better off looking at amazon reviews. your biggest problem is one brand will use several different controller chips. depending on devision.

12:34 PM
Ah well. At least it looks like 2017 will be the year that I can finally move forward.

@Bob that looks cool

Bob
@HackToHell desktop HDDs tend to require 12V

With the edison, speeds will be horrible with usb 2.0 but it's just for rsync backups and movies

@bwDraco I got into all sorts of trouble at 24 ;p

@Bob yeah JMG said so :'(

Bob
12:37 PM
@HackToHell I'm using this amazon.com/gp/product/B00HJZJI84/…

I also, had someone try to kill me. At least twice. Had a potentially crippling injury, Probably had my heart broken, twice....

@Bob cool, looks like I might have to run an SMPS

Bob
It's an Asmedia controller

@JourneymanGeek WHAT STORY TIME

Bob
@HackToHell reviews for other ones listed some dodgy controllers iirc

12:38 PM
@Bob anything that I should be avoiding
reviews for the power brick in this is terryfying amazon.in/IDE-USB-Supports-2-5-Inch-5-25-Inch/dp/…

Bob
@HackToHell also I'll say USB HDDs (and USB <=> SATA) can be unreliable for extended transfers... tends to drop out
depends on your controllers, cables and hubs

@HackToHell Someone try to kill me? er... was accidental near suicide.
Involved a live granade and throwing like a girl dog.

Bob
@HackToHell NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOPE
@JourneymanGeek like this? :P (yes, it's a grenade throwing video, in case you'd rather avoid watching. no injury.)

Also crawled over hot rocks, twice, cause my instructor was cray cray, and nearly fell over due to dehydration.
@Bob er... VERY CLOSE.
Our bays were better designed, and my grenade did actually get out of the bay
barely

okay that's terryfying

Bob
12:41 PM
it's a fairly well-known video

Imagine you are all in a ditch and the enemy throws one in

Oh, its HILARIOUS when you wonder "man, that was loud"

it becomes insurgency xD

and you look over and see this little burnt patch in the grass.... about 2 feet away.

@Bob I'm scared pf buying anything with a power brick now

12:42 PM
Also, injured my leg on a jump trainer and was in physio for a year.

Bob
@HackToHell protip: get one not targeted at indian customers :\

or chinese

Bob
@HackToHell if you can afford it, amazon.com/gp/product/B00D76J1KO/…

@Bob :/ wow that's 3k bucks(with shipping) here the HDD is worth that much I suppose
I need to rethink by NAS strategy
I wonder if I can get a usb hub and plug in all my pen drives :D

Bob
@HackToHell you could always get a standard PSU you know

12:45 PM
Actually have 2 PSUs right now that aren't used. I was thinking of stowing it in the cupboard
But with the PSU there will be no space
Need to find an alternate location I suppose, that's probably the easier option :D
hmm this seems to have the least bad reviews amazon.in/ElectroBee-USB-3-0-Adapter-Warranty/dp/B01DZR8SEY/…
This looks sexy :/
That clone button worries me, what if you accidentally press it :P

Bob
@HackToHell uh, that's not how 12V works

reviews say you have to connect to smps for 3.5 inch

@HackToHell tbh, a dock makes a ton of sense for what I think you're trying to do
@HackToHell we had it at work. Its pretty hard to do it accidentally

@JourneymanGeek as long as no one yelled "FETCH" as they threw it for you

@Burgi I'm pretty sure that would be a court martial offence.

12:54 PM
@JourneymanGeek yeah, I can pop in more if I want to too

Oddly enough, I wasn't in the k9 unit, though they were next door. Apparently they tend to prefer dumb bigger dogs
I mean, they were afraid of the dark.
(We had a power outage, nationwide. their pens went dark. They were all howling)
Wauzers own the night.

lol

Also, make sure you actually installed 1.35V DDR3L memory! Fourth-generation (Haswell) Intel Core processors require 1.35V memory. If it's 1.5V DDR3 memory you just added, it's out of spec for your system's processor (and may also cause any existing low-voltage memory to run at full voltage). This means your power consumption will go way up and you may even shorten the processor's lifespan. — bwDraco 6 mins ago
More attention really needs to be drawn to this. People building or upgrading Haswell and Broadwell machines tend to miss this subtlety.

1:12 PM
i appear to actually be neo and i've dodged yet another bullet

@Burgi :)

Took a closer look at this. Desktop Haswell processors do accept 1.5V memory, but mobile processors (including types Y, U, H, and M) require 1.35V memory.
In this case, it's a laptop with a type H processor. You cannot run 1.5V DDR3 memory on these systems.

Bob
@bwDraco uh, yea, that's been standard until Skylake

Given the large number of Haswell machines out there, it's something people need to keep in mind when servicing these systems.

its 80s day on the SONOS :(
one day i am going to figure out a way of reading all your deleted messages

1:26 PM
@Burgi become a RO? :p

thats not likely to happen though

There's always room for growth.
@JourneymanGeek You see, that's the sort of experience I never got. That's why you're at a huge advantage.

@bwDraco having someone try to kill you is NOT a life experience you really want

It was in training. He made a mistake while throwing a grenade. It wasn't in combat.
(or at least that's what I can tell from the transcript)

OH. And that homicidal maniac I had to babysit!

1:40 PM
Well, that's the kind of experience not everyone gets. That puts you at an unfair advantage. That's what made you a good mod.

Bob
...there's nothing unfair abut it

On the contrary, the personal qualities needed are the same!

In a way, this is making me envious. Until now, I have not been allowed to leave the house without good cause, and I haven't been allowed to socialize much.

@JourneymanGeek glitch in the matrix?

1:43 PM
Again, it's my hope that 2017 will be the year.

3 hours ago, by Burgi
the only solution here is to run away and join the circus

I have never had as much opportunity for skills-building as you have had.
I just want to cry.

you are not too old for the army?

Not too sure I'd pass the physical tests for the US Army...

So, this is after I failed basic the first time (for the record I failed thrice.)

1:46 PM
Things like summer camps were completely ruled out when I was young because of my lack of discipline. My parents had no expectation that I would get through it successfully. Problem is, you're not going to get anywhere if you don't challenge yourself.

I was waiting for assignment in the island we do basic training in, and we were assisting the old company we were in - and the next batch was folks with serious issues.

@bwDraco It's not that hard. 31 press ups in 2 minutes, 43 sit ups in 2 minutes, 2 mile run in 17:30 minutes. You should be able to manage that at age 24.

Kidney/heart problems, etc.
So, there's this kid who's not fit for combat cause he's ... got a history of serious, violent mental illness.

@DavidPostill Sadly, the same restrictions that have traditionally been imposed upon me have left me out of shape.

Apparently he stalked his girlfriend with a knife before he came in, he tended to violently scratch his scalp until it bled...

1:48 PM
@bwDraco its not too late to change
@JourneymanGeek i do that...

I'm not looking to enlist. I just want real social experience.

the scratching i mean
not the other stuff

And I got stuck with keeping an eye on him. I tended to be soft spoken. Once when I was off island on a medical appointment...
I come back to find the guy gone

@bwDraco Go join a gym. I bet after 1 month you will be fit enough. And there are all those lycra clad women to look at while you are training :)

+2

1:50 PM
Apparently a instructor yelled at him and it took 2 huge guys, including a burly 3sg, to hold down a guy who barely weighted 50kg
and tied him to a wheelchair.
and shipped him off island.

wow

Oct 2 '16 at 4:16, by bwDraco
I realize the world is full of hazards and dangers and that my parents want to protect me from the "dangerous" outside world, but the fact of the matter is that risk cannot be completely eliminated and that I do need to be exposed to some risk to properly mature.

(and then they sent him back, and everyone else was too chickenshit to handle him while they processed his discharge)

Guess who got saddled with keeping and eye on him?

1:51 PM
GuardDog Geek

@Burgi yup ;p

If only... *sob*

@bwDraco Gyms are not usually dangerous places ...

@bwDraco that said, I didn't learn to handle him

@bwDraco are you an agrophobica?

1:52 PM
I handled him using the same skills I use here.

@Burgi No, definitely not.

i'm struggling to understand why you let your parents keep you as a virtual prisoner then...

@Burgi afraid of agriculture?
OH GOD THEY'RE GROWING THAT CORN!

@bwDraco its worth remembering I hated it, I had no choice, and I was totally unsuited for that

@bwDraco singapore has conscription

1:53 PM
yup

@Burgi 1) Traditional Chinese values; 2) longstanding behavioral issues, including autism and severe self-control issues; and 3) general pessimism and risk aversion (mainly on Father's end)

And life's exactly what you make of it. My life's been boring since

you learn self-control after the first couple of times you fuck up

Well, considering that my social skills are so poorly developed, the only way to go is up. At least Mom knows it's important and is giving me a chance to grow up. The same cannot be said for Father.

sneak out of the window
go to the gym
sit in a coffee shop

1:57 PM
@bwDraco as a fellow homebody who has had many issues with overprotective parents, I can say that it's hugely beneficial to spend at least part of your day out of the house... a job -- any job -- would go a long way to helping that

@Burgi Go to AMS an sit in a coffee shop :)

get job -> get out of house -> become socially apt while out of house -> alleviate parental pressure -> ??? -> profit
6

@DavidPostill association of Muslim schools?

@allquixotic What about the missing step? :P

@Burgi LOL

1:58 PM
@bwDraco what missing step

@bwDraco oh, am I missing a ??? ->? :P

yup

Ah. Make funny. Excellent

@Burgi Stop playing ignorant :)

he's not playing; he's really that dumb

1:59 PM
@allquixotic sadly this is true

@Burgi kidding ;)
ey I guess Hilsum doesn't need help today (he's not here)
RA meme = Hilsum went from being a regular to only coming here when he needs our help (sniff sniff ;'()

omg! i would almost pay the airfare myself to see @bwDraco in amsterdam

I'm a New Yorker.

2:02 PM
@Burgi why? (just curious)

Oh dear. Look what I've started ;p

@DavidPostill RA Meetup 2017?
we should meet in the Greater German Reich Trumpland (sorry, I've been playing too much Hearts of Iron IV / watching too much The Man In the High Castle)

@allquixotic Now there's an idea.

If any of y'all are ever nearish the Midwest, I'd be happy to see you!

@allquixotic to help get the life experiences he claims to be missing

2:04 PM
@BenN I can be in the midwest (depending on how far you are from a major airport) within 2 hours of a $70 Southwest Airlines ticket
I'm ridiculously close to BWI Airport and they go just about everywhere

@allquixotic Not so easy for the rest of us ...

ya
@Burgi so you're going to introduce him to Amsterdam(ian) "escorts" of the female persuasion? :P

This cannot end well.

Bob
@allquixotic at the rate he's going there's the minor chance I won't be able to go to the US :P

I'll excuse myself at this point.

2:09 PM
@Bob oh boy
there's also the minor chance I won't be able to leave

Bob
@allquixotic oh, I'm on mumble with @JourneymanGeek right now and I can't tell the difference between his "washing machine" and thunder :P

LOLL
wish I could join ya

Bob
@allquixotic work?

hmm, maybe I can from my phone in the car
then you'll have car noise AND washing machine noise
also I love that Geek's washing machine runs 24/7
his mother must really love to clean things

Bob
lol

2:14 PM
HOLY SHIT!!!!
massive accident outside the office
@allquixotic i can point them out but i can't make any personal recommendations

@Burgi Tweet it.

rgr

how many vehicles involved?

Is everyone alright?

everyone is fine, 2 cars involved but 5 cars caught in collateral....
BADLY

2:18 PM
Oof. Glad all the people are unharmed

people following too close

a collision added ~45 minutes to my commute last night :(

yellow car hit the taxi which somehow spun and took out the 5 in the car park

@Burgi you work next to ASS Ltd :-D

2:20 PM
i know!
it makes me laugh too

maybe if you'd drive on the right side of the road you wouldn't have this problem ;-) /sarc

@Burgi Huh. Where all the damage? It doesn't look serious to me.

everyone has little cars there... I mean, I do too, I have a Prius C (smaller than Prius), but I'm used to 60-70% of American cars being either full size sedan or SUV or pickup trucks
economy or compact sedans are relatively rare

Someone hit a few empty cars in a car park...

@GourneymanJeek @Fox gitter or email me the mumble info

2:27 PM
@DavidPostill the audi is missing the entire front
the taxi is missing the right hand side

@Bob @JourneymanGeek ^^ see above my silly ping

Bob
@allquixotic gitter'd

@Burgi Not obvious from your photo :/

@allquixotic I've been to America and your economy/mid-sized car was what we refer to as "fecking huge".

2:39 PM
@DavidPostill yeah people got in the way
the police have just arrived

@Mokubai Sometimes I wish cars here were smaller; I've several times needed to Austin Powers my way out of a tight parking situation

@BenN he has a jaguar... they are big cars

@Bob giitter

@BenN The only car sizes I saw in the two weeks I was driving around Florida were big, BIGGER and BIGGEST.
I was most surprised to see what was essentially a monster truck parked in a restaurant car park. Who drives that kind of car on a casual basis?

Was it actually a monster truck (like with the wheels) or just really jacked up?
Some people like to have the body really high above the wheels
(also, not sure if I'm using the term "body" correctly, because I know very little about car maintenance)

2:46 PM
Might have been a baby monster-truck. The wheels were pretty much up to my shoulders and I'd have needed a ladder to get in. I'm 5' 10", so not particularly short.

Oh wow, I can't say I've seen one of those on the road before

i feel sorry for the owners of the empty cars...
they are going to come home after a long day and find it destroyed

@Burgi Aye, the'll have no idea until they get back from work/shopping and be just at a loss as to what they can actually do
Potentially stuck there without a way to get home

Their insurance should cover the car's damage, but how to get home will be tricky

it is the city centre so there are trains, trams and buses to most places but it is a faff

2:57 PM
@Burgi But then you've got to do something with the car, you can't just leave it there...
